Netflix CEO Reed Hastings got $9.3 million last year for being a huge screw-up. Netflix stock dropped 77% amid Hastings' failed attempt to spin off the company's DVD rental business and to implement a fee increase.
A group of venture capitalists are, according to rumors, announcing a new private space program today, with the aim of mining an asteroid or asteroids in space. Big unanswered legal question: can people own objects in space?

Beginning in the 1990s Maryland saw a decrease of -62,000 in domestic migration. Conversely there was a significant increase of 228,500 people due to foreign immigration. This trend continued from 2000-2007 with -54,000 in domestic migration and 135,800 in foreign immigration. An analysis of non-Hispanic white and minority populations showed that the non-Hispanic white population has decreased while minority populations have increased.
IOW MD is being flooded with illegals and minorities while tax payers are bailing out and leaving. And they want to increase taxes some more on the working people??? Commies never learn. Of course they are filling the State with their own voting blocks while driving out Republicans. And they will be in Washington begging for a bailout when the inevitable bankruptcy bells start ringing.

I had to go read that article to figure about what "gender identity" was.
So now the civil rights act has been interpreted to include cross-dressing gender-benders as "protected".
It is high time to amend the CRA of 1964 to eliminate the EEOC which has become one of the most racist organizations in the country and also eliminate the most egregious part of the law, Title VI.

D-Day vet beaten, wife killed in robbery
The 101st Airborne Division Association is asking its members and other Screaming Eagles veterans to step up and help one of their own — a 90-year-old D-Day veteran who nearly died as a result of a brutal home invasion last month.
Bob Strait of Tulsa, Okla., was hospitalized after a vicious March 14 robbery that killed his wife, 85-year-old Nancy Strait. She was beaten and raped in the attack.
The couple, who met on a blind date on Thanksgiving Day 1946, had been married for 65 years.
Police have one suspect in custody, but they believe as many as four others took part in the home invasion.

Serious question, legal beagles: if I'm not allowed to do independent research, am I supposed to ignore information in an area of my expertise if a) it applies to the trial and b) I have information not presented?
Say, for instance, I were a chemistry expert (I'm not) who happened to get jury duty. Then say the Prosecution introduced some flawed (doesn't even have to be majorly flawed, just enough that their conclusion should have been "inconclusive") chemistry based evidence. Further suppose the Defense didn't get an expert in that area, or said expert was asleep at the wheel, and did not challenge said evidence.
In that scenario, would I be able to go into jury deliberations and say, "Look I don't know about the rest, but I'm actually a Chemist, and I know the Prosecution's findings on evidence exhibit whatever are flawed." Or would I be required to ignore what I know?
Because it seems to me that, as long as you're not looking up news coverage of the trial itself, there shouldn't be a problem in learning about the subject matter discussed in a trial.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say roughly 50% of the truly poverty stricken in the United States are all people who should be in insane asylums- but those are icky, so we can't have them any more.
Of the others... well, actually it's not hard at all to get on the various welfare programs, all they need to do is go ask. There are even people (at least, here in TX, so I'm guessing they're in the other 56 states too) who will help you do things like obtain a legal identity (for those who were born "off the grid" or never knew their Social Security Number, or whatever), and then shepherd you through the process.

And yet anywhere that up to 10,000 tea partyers gather, the place is cleaner than when they arrived.

Big unanswered legal question: can people own objects in space?
Well, you can have a star "named" after you, so I don't see why not. I imagine in the case of space flotsam and jetsam, like an asteroid, it would be a matter of whoever can get there first and plant a flag, rather like a new version of the New World. But when it comes to things like PLANETS, then we get into dicier territory. Much as red China would probably love to lay sole claim to Mars... no.

Sore loser Ann Richards used it to malign Bush's campaign. Didn't work. She faded away into the sunset (from TXGov. to a brief schtick Democrat payoff with a NYC ad agency) after 'misunderestimating' the fallout from permitting the Feds to terrorize and burn to death an entire community of Texans outside of Waco.
But then, attacking the Bush political family is a dangerous enterprise. Just ask Barbara. Whereas, endorsement does not make Romney Bush "family" -- so regarding the mouth mine, it's Mitt's to grin and "bare" on his own wit.

On the space thing, FWIW, "naming stars" after you is a bit of a scam. The stars are named in an unofficial database (usually run by the company doing the selling.) To actually have a star named (in whatever the "official" database is you pretty much have to discover it (or be very close to the person who does.)
As for owning things in space. Didn't one of the space treaties actually cover this? Not that I'm a big fan of any of the space treaties, but I'm sure someone will try to invoke them.

Simple legal answer: of course you can.
It's a basic principle of homesteading. The first person to put an unowned thing to productive economic use appropriates it, and thereby becomes its owner.
How could anyone have a property claim that's superior to the first user? It makes no sense.
Posted by: Phinn at April 24, 2012 05:06 AM (KNtHw)
That should not be true. I'm not sure about SC (each BCBS is a different entity, so they have slightly different rules) but here in TX if the reason for the dental work is a medical diagnosis (some infection, cancer, whatever) then your medical insurance should cover those charges, unless dental services are specifically excluded (there is a list of exclusions in your policy, it would have to be explicitly spelled out that dental services are never covered).
The health insurance companies assume that dental work is for dental diagnoses, but if you provide documentation otherwise, they're supposed to pay.
Did you take the question to your state Insurance board (whatever they may be called)?

Almost anything that specifically effects the mouth and jaw- with the exception of TMJ (for reasons I don't understand), and some issues regarding tissues or non-dentition (tongue, roof of mouth, etc.)- are assumed to be dental diagnoses.

Their retransition into Federal Goons is the Wilsonian "Reset" to autonomous and vicious G-Men. Were they actually upholding Constitutional Law, but rather, it's the organized dissolution of Rule of Law that they enforce.
Forest Rangers have always been a tight knit group, very possessive of their professional/personal charge. But there was a mutual respect going on. WWII Vet families frequented summer vacations camping in national forests designated areas. The Rangers would come and talk with our dads, ask for identification to know who we were, how long we expected to stay, reminding us children especially of campfire safety and to never go alone away from camp, and not to wander further than we could see the camp. After that, they'd make their daily rounds without further interaction. Part of their job, stewardship and holding campers to be responsible. And most people still made it our point to leave the campsite cleaner than we found it, a matter of American pride, the legacy of personal respect and love for our Land.
Today while legitimately camping in National Forests, Americans face more dangers from attack by the criminal element augmented disproportionately by illegal aliens than pioneer settlers faced from unfriendly Native Americans. And the tax payers funding Federal Thugs augment the criminal element, blind eye or worse, official hands involved in criminal human/drug trafficking for corrupt profit. FAST AND FURIOUS. Obama provided clear precedence for future presidents to become even worse, "inheriting" corrupt Federal Marxism.
Via DHS, metropolitan and urban police departments are also being assimilated into the federal thug union, no thanks to well intended politicians advancing more abusive powers to augment the Patriot Act, becoming a petrified permanent feature in the public mind, accepting loss of Liberty and eliminating rule of law. The thing about unencumbered power is the predictable outcome: abusive authoritarianism. So much for separation of powers, limited powers, checks and balances.

This is partially because it's so expensive. The market works and encourages innovation. I wish there were a way to stop Europe from living large off our medical awesomeness. (Part of the high US drug cost is because you legally can't sell drugs for high costs in Europe, so there's cost shifting back to us, where the freaken things were developed.)

Nice to see the City Council in Sanford rejected the police chief's resignation in the face of the Trayvon Martin shooting as being wholly political and not in the best interests of anybody.
Link to Breitbart.com: http://tinyurl.com/74wgz3a
It's ridiculous. If it's found during the course of the investigation and trial that there was any deliberate police malfeasance, or any gross negligence on their part, then yes, I think it would be perfectly reasonable for the Chief to tender his resignation. But resigning because you didn't follow the mob mentality to arrest Zimmerman from the start, despite the lack of evidence? That's a fool's errand.
The fact that the city commissioners only denied the resignation by a vote of 3-2, though, shows that there is nothing about this case that has anything to do with truth and justice. It's all political.

As for BCBS being bad about paying? Well, that may be true of BCBSSC, but it is not true for BCBSTX. Like I said, the BCBS in each state is a different entity. Many of them are owned by one of just a few larger holding companies (for instance, the one that owns BCBSTX also owns BCBSIL, BCBSOK, and BCBSNM), but each one has to be its own entity. One of the side-effects of that is that you'll get a fairly wide range of service quality from one BCBS to the next.

Yeah, I've got no clue on the dental side.
That said, when I was working at BCBS there were not a small number of doctors who had a problem with us because they didn't understand the state's prompt-pay law.
Basically, TX has a law which effects most insurance plans that they either have to pay or officially deny within 15 days of receipt of a claim. Blue Cross is exempted, because part of the BC Charter is that you must be a not-for-profit company (which just means you're not allowed much of a surplus each year, not that you can't make any profit at all. Man it was nice when we made more than that surplus- it had to be spent somehow, so they normally paid us nice, fat bonuses), and not-for-profit Insurance companies were exempt from Texas prompt-pay. On top of that, most of our plans were self-funded plans, which further exempted them from prompt-pay.
You would not believe the number of times I had to respond to provider complaints about that.
Now, to be clear, we still tried to get claims paid or denied within that 15 day window (and we did with better than 99% of them), but we were under no legal obligation to do so.

I wonder how much trouble you'd get into if you glitter-bombed the President. It's not like the leftards have any compunctions against doing the same.
As for "the War on Terror" being over- that would be great, if it had ever actually been a "War on," it was (despite the name) more of a "War with." Or, as they say: It takes two to fight, when only one person does it, it's called a beating.

My dental plan only covers 80% of charges up to $1500 for the year. As of this year I am on a catastrophic plan for BCBS where I pay the first $5K in costs then they are supposed to pick up 100% after that.
What I have found is they are calling all these doctors that the hospital brought in for wife out of system and are not paying all the charges and we are still winding up having to pay.
That and the dental is showing me what their colors are. What is bad is that before this year we never had any problem with them. The other prolem is the billing department of the hospital where most of the work is going on keeps filing shit under the wrong codes. So it makes it hard to determine who is doing the screwing, the hospital or the insurance company.

I cannot tell you how many times I sat helplessly on the phone having to tell some poor subscriber that we couldn't pay an otherwise legitimate claim because one or more of the codes were wrong- and how often they nearly burst into tears because they'd already gone rounds with their doctor's billing staff trying to get things corrected.
It didn't help that I was doing customer service for the High Risk pool, so these were people who a) couldn't get insurance anywhere else and b) really, really, really needed their insurance.
I could tell you some stories, but I'll sum it up this way- I think all medical professionals should have to do at least one semester of purely business curriculum, it would save those of us who have to work with the money end of things so much trouble. As it is, too many of them hire staff who have no more clue than they do about how to get claims paid properly- and it causes all kinds of grief.

Today, the National Journal reported that a senior State Department official has announced, “The war on terror is over.”
“Now that we have killed most of al Qaida,” the source said, “now that people have come to see legitimate means of expression, people who once might have gone into al Qaida see an opportunity for a legitimate Islamism.”
The article itself describes the Obama administrationÂ’s new vision of foreign policy, which admits no enemies. Everyone, in this view, is a friend. Islamism, says the Obama administration, is just fine, so long as it does not openly support terrorism.

Californians will vote on a ballot measure in November that would abolish the death penalty and set the maximum sentence under California law as life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The legislature is just covering its collective ass. They've been so criminally negligent in the discharge of their duties that any jury would be happy to sentence them to the chair.
Aren't CA's prisons already overcrowded? Aren't they supposed to release several thousand prisoners in the very near future to combat this overcrowding?

"that people have come to see legitimate means of expression, people who once might have gone into al Qaida see an opportunity for a legitimate

By "legitimate means of expression" I assume this senior official (Carney, Panetta or Axelrod?) means would-be al Qaida members see, "unfettered opportunity to slaughter Christians and Jews, burn churches and synagogues, mutilate women, abuse children, and kill Westerners with impunity, without fear of violent reprisal." Right?

There is no doubt in my mind that he is evil. None.
Start here: The man voted present during most of his tenure as an Illinois State Senator. The only issue he vigorously pursued was the Infanticide Bill, a piece of legislation that was so vile that not even NARAL would touch it.
He is in love with death. He is actively pursuing policies that will inevitably lead to the destruction of America. He sides with our enemies over our allies. He foments race war within his own country. He views the Constitution as an obstruction. He flaunts his power in our faces and dares us to challenge him on it.
I believe his inclusion of the dog eating story in his memoirs was no accident. He deliberately violates the most common of American values, and is proud of himself for it. He hates us.

They don't give a damn about making all of humanity happy and fulfilling some communal kumbaya for the benefit of all. I don't think it is the doctor's fault in most of these cases. That it unless you count the hospital hiring the most clueless HS dropout possible to work in the billing department. Either that, or the hospital purposely trying to get shit by the insurance company by filing for in-patient vs out-patient so they can get a higher rate.
However, I still have one bill from the ER doctor that has not been paid because they didn't even try to file for insurance. This even though I gave all the insurance info at the hospital.

In an effort to promote collaboration between small and medium-sized businesses in the United States with businesses overseas, the State Department has reached out to EgyptÂ’s Muslim Brotherhood, according to an online briefing for foreign reporters last week.
Undersecretary of State Robert Hormats says he has spoken with members of the Muslim Brotherhood about “promoting smaller enterprises,” according to CNS's Terence P. Jeffrey, and that he will be speaking with other Middle East and North African leaders on the same topic this week.
“America’s a big economy with a number of big companies. We also have a lot of small and medium-sized companies. And we know in many parts of the world, there is an effort to support small and medium-sized enterprise,” Hormats said.

I don't think it's the doctor's fault either- except that, because so many of them don't understand the business side of their business, they don't know what questions to ask or what actions to oversee to make sure they're getting quality business/billing people.
So they get billing people who can't understand (for reasons I'll never, never fathom) that they should do basic checks like making sure they didn't just try to bill a vasectomy for a woman. Or bill a preventative diagnostic mammogram for a man.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Home prices dropped in February in most major U.S. cities for a sixth straight month, a sign that modest sales gains haven't been enough to boost prices.
The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home-price index shows that prices dropped in February from January in 16 of the 20 cities it tracks.
The steepest declines were in Atlanta, Chicago and Cleveland. Prices rose in Phoenix, San Diego and Miami. They were unchanged in Dallas.
The declines partly reflect typical offseason sales. The month-to-month prices aren't adjusted for seasonal factors.
Still, prices fell in 15 of the 20 cities in February compared with the same month in 2011. That indicates that the housing market remains far from healthy despite the best winter for sales in five years.
The steady price declines have brought the nationwide index to its late 2002 level. Home prices have fallen 35 percent since the housing bust.
Comrades, the glorious workers' recovery is doing just dandy

I once called a hospital to ask for the correct mailing address to send a HIPPA authorization for prescription records. The idiot (and I apologize to idiots for the comparison) I got on the phone told me that she could not release that information to me without a HIPPA auth. I repeated what I said, thinking I was unclear and she said the same thing. We went back and forth for 10 minutes with her being adamant that the hospital's address was protected health information. I finally got her supervisor who told me the same thing. I pitched a huge fit at her and got transferred to legal. Oh that was a fun, fun, fun conversation on my end at least. I will say this, I sort of felt bad for that person because he was trying to do the right thing and stick up for his people while also admitting that they were utterly wrong. Good times, good times. Of course, this is the same hospital that interpreted please send color photocopies of the front and back of every single page in a file as send me illegible b&w copies of single side only. Oh, geez. That's so freaking stupid. We had a few morons in our customer service, too- it happens in any organization, I guess. I don't think we had anybody quite that dumb, though.
Actually, our biggest problem stemmed from CSRs (who all had Claim Reprocessing authority) going in and authorizing claims manually which had properly denied. Oh, that was a fun bit of paperwork.
The only thing that made those situations less than a complete disaster was that, almost without fail, the doctor would decide they hadn't gotten enough money they shouldn't have gotten in the first place, and would file a second appeal. Usually my team got second appeals, and I made sure we all knew the actual rules for claim approval. So we'd issue a refund request, and then we'd have to inform our supervisor so that the original CSR could be talked to.

The funny thing is, my Korean main squeeze bemoans the way we work out in our yard all the time because she tanned - the Korean ideal for gals is to have porcelain white skin, that they maintain by studiously avoiding the sun like the plague.
So we have Korean girls with Vitamin D deficiencies doing their best to look pasty white, and European gals irradiating and chemically contaminating their skinto look like they have a Korean hue. Makes sense... NOT.
Posted by: CoolCzech at April 24, 2012 10:27 AM (Iaxlk)
Not just Korean either! The fairer the skin the better in Japan, too. I assume this is at least part of the reason for the geisha makeup of pure white face paint.
And it's not just the girls. One of my favorite male Jpop groups (shut up) has a member who LOVES to fish. As a result he's always ending up brown and tanned, which gets him in trouble with his management agency. It's quite the running joke, even though it makes zero sense to Western fans.

So now the War on Terror has been won, I won't have to be subjected to man(woman) handling by those awful TSA people when I fly to LA later this year?
I hate LA Airport anyway - dreadful place - so I was seriously thinking of flying to Honolulu from OZ, getting the customs stuff done there and flying domestic to LAX
At least the Honolulu customs people have always been friendly in the past, unlike their counterparts at LAX
So when are all the troops coming home from Afghanistan? As there is no War on Terror anymore....

It's not like they're going to actually kill anybody. The last execution was in 2006. Besides, life without parole doesn't get the automatic and ongoing appeal processes, as well as the sequestered death row housing.
That's why I like Texas. When they say they're gonna kill someone, that someone ends up dead.

Aside from Muslim sympathy, the illegitimate Marxist SCOAMF Obama legitimizes Islamist fundamentalism, aka Islamofascism.
But this is not simply "Obama" -- but rather, the Democrat with Republican politicians enabling of the Saudi stealth (if that) Caliphate, requiring the take-down of every global sovereign entity, fatwa v. competing Muslim sects and powers (minnow Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iran, all in due course). The Muslim Brotherhood began life fed to advance the House of Saud, funded by Britain to attack the Ottoman Empire. And the rest is more recent "history" as NATO/US and the UN aided and allied with the Muslim Brotherhood along with al Qaida et al. during the concocted "Arab Spring". And aside from the Saudi component, who benefits financially? The global banks, IMF, etc. absconding with the national banks of Libya, etc. as if the UN has legitimate authority to order the destruction of Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iran or any other nation, including the USA, NO THANKS IN PARTICULAR TO OBAMA.
The United States of America is not yet the herd of tax payers obligated to bail-out any entity, domestic-foreign-global.
The Federal Reserve and FDIC purposely had its creation's legal nervous system separating/limiting powers removed by Clinton. Unfortunately for America, its Keynesian "debt is wealth" Congress playing the victim of Clinton's "Because I Could" Fed revisionist lobotomy. The Fed currently functions as a global corporate raiding parasitic speculator set against sovereign nations, specifically set against the US citizens and even against the US Government when UN/global-banker push comes to shove. Of course its power mongers abuse tax payers as mere pulp to be teased and squeezed until pulverized to meet the cruel demands of the organized criminal global "investment" pirates. Why buy something they can more easily take at will? Why pay insurance claims themselves when they can double/triple bill (US) tax payers to cover "losses" taken and exploited by the bankers, value of investors' investment lost entirely, booty taken already from tax payers by passing the buck, and kicking the explosive debt bomb at citizenry. Given Eugenics, we "deserve" destruction.

America is a signatory to the Outer Space Treaty.
Under that treaty, private parties can own material they process but its not clear whether or not you can own an asteroid. In other words, once you start mining the asteroid, you own the products that you have mined, while the parts of the asteroid you haven't mined might theoretically still be fair game for anyone else who comes along.
