— Gabriel Malor Happy Wednesday.
The President lied his little pointy head off yesterday when he claimed to quote---"I'm just quoting here. I'm just quoting . . . I didnÂ’t make this up"---from Republican Congresswoman Virginia Fox on irresponsible student loan debt. He claimed she said she had "very little tolerance for people who tell me they graduate with debt because thereÂ’s no reason for that." In fact, she said she had "very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt because thereÂ’s no reason for that."
351 small banks can't repay $15 billion in TARP loans.
"It was like a shootout in the movies!" said one neighbor after two NYPD officers unloaded 84 bullets at a man last night. The man shot once at the NYPD officers and they returned fire. Both police officers reloaded twice during the barrage. The man was hit fourteen times. He lived.
The Supreme Court will hear argument today in the case of United States v. Arizona. It's the Arizona immigration law case. The high court is also expected to release at least one opinion later this morning.
With respect to the primaries last night, Romney secured 146 delegates last night. Paul got 4. Gingrich got 0. Romney also took every single county in each of the five states.
I guarantee you there will be pundits today wringing their hands about voter turnout last night. They'll be pretending that turnout (which I assume was low, but didn't bother to check because any moron could tell you it'll be low) is an indicator of how dedicated Romney's voters really are. They'll be pretending this because pundits have to pundit about something and their pulpy little parietal lobes don't have a lot of punditry primed for a primary with only pro forma polls pending.
Newsflash: the GOP candidate will be Romney; not only does everyone know it, but everyone has known it for over a week now. So obsessing over the turnout last night is stupid for a few obvious reasons:
(1) Incentives matter. What's the incentive to vote if your vote isn't going to affect the outcome of the race?
(2) Disincentives also matter. Why vote if your preferred candidate has dropped out and you're left with candidates you'd really not pull the lever for?
(3) Obama ate a dog. Last night's contests in no way reflect the incentives and disincentives of participating in the general election.
First person to tweet me a link to a pundit moaning about turnout last night gets my undying gratitude and a free year's subscription to the HQ, but mostly just a free year's subscription to the HQ.

There were plenty of people wringing their hands about Romney's ceiling of 20-25% of the vote, and that "conservatives" would never vote for him. Why bother about them.

Because neither one of us want you to leave a legacy as "Obama-class"liar.
So if I need some one to pick up the laundry and detail my car, relying on your gratitude...I'm good, right?
And in ten years I show up with the wife needing a place to stay for the weekend, and maybe that weekend stretches into a week, or even a month or two, that undying gratitude lives on, correct?
Since your gratitude, unlike you, is undying, my great-great grandchildren can summon your spirit for a little help during their SATs, no problem? You won't give them bogus answers?
OK, I'm off to look for that link.

1. It's the economy - and we're not stupid. (Carville must have gnashed his teeth at that.)
2. The "It's unfair" riff (unfair to trap inner city kids in bad schools for example)
Also saw that he isn't castigating people for voting for Obama, but blaming him for not living up to his promises.
And he is also using a variation of Reagan's "Are you better off?" line.
It was swell!

I don't know what the whole chain of events was here but what ultimately happened was the SEC's shyster ambulance chaser presented a witness with a notebook from the whistleblower and the witness recognized the handwriting. I'm sure the lazy fucks could've typed it out in transcript form to protect the identity.
Whistleblowing is a dangerous game. I once had the opportunity to fuck over a former employer because of chicanery they pulled with the company's savings plan which cost the participants. I ultimately didn't pursue it for a variety of reasons, the main one being that I was afraid that the fall guys for this wouldn't be the ones that benefited from it. But I also was concerned about how it would impact my future.

48....I think most people want to dump Obama; they just need a good enough excuse. As if the disaster of the past 3.5 years isn't enough of one!
I think the best way to offer them a good face-saving excuse...is with the narrative:
"The media kept the Truth from you."
The way that the media even intentionally doctored the 911 tapes of Zimmerman is one good example. ....There are others. ....And the continued vetting of Barky, is an ongoing imperative.

Every week they have a shoot out with guys who are perfectly willing to step out in the the open, plant both feet next to each other to make a nice big target, and slowly fire their weapons. Strangely enough, the good guys are able to mow them down without any injuries to themselves.

Just One Minute, about Woolrich chinos:
...are not for commandos, but rather, the company says, for the fashion-aware gun owner. And Woolrich has competition. Several clothing companies are following suit, building businesses around the sharp rise in people with permits to carry concealed weapons....
The company has added a second pocket behind the traditional front pocket for a weapon. Or, for those who prefer to pack their gun in a holster, it can be tucked inside the stretchable waistband. The back pockets are also designed to help hide accessories, like a knife and a flashlight.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Once thought to be solidly behind President Barack Obama, younger voters burdened by a bleak employment picture, high gas prices and student loan debt are being aggressively wooed by the Democrat and his likely Republican challenger, Mitt Romney.
In 2008, Obama had a 34-point advantage over Republican Sen. John McCain among voters under age 30. He won about two-thirds of the vote in that age group.
But a new Harvard poll suggests the president may face a harder sales job with younger voters this time around. Obama led Romney by 12 points among those ages 18-24, according to the survey. Among those in the 25-29 age group, Obama held a 23-point advantage.
It's an opening Republicans hope to exploit by focusing on young people's disillusionment with the candidate who promised "hope" and "change."
It's obvious that these younger voters are racists. How could anyone but a racist still not blindly believe in Barry's hope and change?

In a speech about rising education costs, a key theme of his re-election campaign, Obama said he knew firsthand how paying for university could hurt families and ding the economy.
"I didn't just read about this. I didn't just get some talking points about this. I didn't just get a policy briefing on this. Michelle and I, we've been in your shoes," the Democrat told students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
"We didn't come from wealthy families. So when we graduated from college and grad school, we had a mountain of debt. When we got married, we got poorer together," he said, noting they only finished paying off their student loans about eight years ago.
They were so poor with Michelle's $300k a year job that never exist before or since. Just struggling to get by Barry the panderer and chief

[O]n Tuesday, Mr. Obama proposed that one major step should be to keep interest rates on federal college loans from jumping on July 1, when a government-orchestrated discount is set to expire ... More than 7.4 million students would see their interest rate on federally subsidized loans double if Congress fails to act, the White House says, with the rate climbing from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.
Maybe, just maybe, the government should quit fucking with things like this and let the private market decide who gets to borrow money, for how long and for what purpose and at which interest rates. Just a thought.

A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district member of Congress. But now itÂ’s attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.
The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own familiesÂ’ land.
Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work “in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”
“Prohibited places of employment,” a Department press release read, “would include country grain elevators, grain bins, silos, feed lots, stockyards, livestock exchanges and livestock auctions.”

The switch, which has been going on for months and will ultimately include millions of loans, is mandated by a little-known provision tucked into the 2010 healthcare overhaul. Pushed by a consortium of nonprofit student loan companies, the provision forces the DOE to use nonprofit loan servicers. But at least in the short run, the switch has caused problems.
Borrower Isabelle Baeck said that after a new servicer, Mohela, took over her loans in December, she received a letter saying that her monthly payments had been reduced to $50 2014 roughly a quarter of what they had been. The change meant Baeck would ultimately pay more in interest over a longer period of time. Concerned, she said she has made repeated calls to get the problem fixed, only to have the payments repeatedly readjusted.
If you like your student loan you're f*cked. How the hell did student loans end up in Barry Care? I guess they did have to pass it to find out what was in it

When my little great-niece came up to visit a few years ago -- she was five at the time -- she had a raging tantrum her first day here. Apparently this was pretty common for her back home in Florida.
But hooooboy, did she pick the WRONG RELATIVES to do that with. My mother is British, so that right there tells you what she thinks of emotional outbursts and noisy children. And my father is my father, and he BOOMS when he yells.
They let her have her little screaming match while we chatted with my half-sis for a while. Until the niece started kicking the wall of the guest bedroom. That did it.
My dad gets up from the couch, marches down the hall, and HAMMERS on the bedroom door. "YOU STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!"
He opens the door and there's the niece staring at him all wide-eyed.
"That's MY wall," he barks at her. "You do NOT kick my wall! Are you going to pay for my wall? Should I get paint and make you paint my wall? If you want to kick something, you go get a job, you go buy a house, and you kick YOUR OWN wall, you understand me? You scream if you want to, but don't you make me come back here again!"
My dad's bark is way worse than his bite, but when you're five and aren't used to people calling you on your behavior, it can be a bit of a shock to the system.
Needless to say, she was much better behaved the rest of her visit.

It's called "buying votes."
However, with the specific example you quoted, there's nothing that prevents her from paying the $200/mo she was paying. Moreover, since her actual "payment" is only $50/mo now, that's $150 in principle she'd be paying every month. She'd probably get her loan paid of much quicker.
Of course, she'd have to pay by check or online bill-pay instead of autodraft to do that, but that shouldn't be that big of a hurdle.

My fear is that as usual, we start from where the Leftists left us. We never seem to backtrack on the crap they foisted off on the country.
Take for example the Labor dept no making it illegal for kids to work on their family's farm.
Will Romney et al reverse that decision or will it remain in place.
It's time to roll back the leftist agenda.
If they don't do that, what's the point of fighting they're winning by inches and we give it up to them.
Every time.

My experience with my private student loan company, Sallie Mae, has been utterly awful, and I have been very faithful about paying: never missed a payment until they decided to restart my loans right after grad school after sending me a letter telling my that the loans would not come due again until a year after my projected graduation and after this had been confirmed by a representative. It is very difficult to get a customer service rep from the US (I have to ask to be transferred) and the ones from the Philippines, while I am sure they are nice people and speak English nicely, understand very little and are poorly trained. I have come to the conclusion that I can trust neither their official correspondence nor the people who are supposed to help me.

That's remarkable. She's the one who called GOP female legislators "men with breasts". Evidently she lost her primary because she is not progressive enough. What's lost in all the attention given the marquee race at the top of the ticket, is the downballot races that could have serious consequences. For instance, some PA legislators faced TEA party challenges but AFAIK, none were unseated.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised how there was only one office to vote on - just 4 names on the entire ballot. I joked about it, but the volunteers there were oddly humorless. I realize they need to be non-partisan, but remarking about the number of people on the ballot didn't seem remotely political to me.
Oh, and I forgot to say that it makes me crazy to think that Romney & his backers still would have to spend a dime campaigning against anybody but Obama. Pa Primary
R votes for Senator: 751,661
D votes for Senator: 691,649
R votes for President 800,661
D votes for president 608,988
So in both races there were more Republican voters which is nice. But the only really contested race was for R Senate (plus house and local stuff). But MORE R people voted for the Pres candidates than for the Senate candidates and that wasn't really contested.
At the same time 12% of the democrats who were willing to push a button for Casey/Vodvarka couldn't bring themselves to move their hand 4 inches to vote for Obama.

If you're saying that cops who do ONLY the bare minimum to qualify with their weapons every training cycle, then they shouldn't be engaging shooters at that distance anyhow. Each officer shot 3 magazines worth and managed to hit with about 16% accuracy. That's a shit load of bullets flying around and missing their mark, which IMO is dangerous to the public.

As a guy who's half white and half Kenyon, he's not even in the same ethnic group as the overwhelming majority of blacks in the country (who trace their roots to very different parts of Africa), he doesn't have American slavery as part of his heritage, didn't grow up in an American black ghetto, and he's not even black (but, rather, biracial). Take away the "First Black President" bit, and what has President Empty Suit got?
Obama's pushing the "I didn't grow up with a silver spoon" crap, so where's Romney saying, "I didn't grow up in Indonesia after being abandoned by my parents, but I know (fill in blank with real problems of real people) anyway!"

I wasn't there for it, but my wife tells a story of being in a store, and seeing a kid with two women (pretty sure mom and grandma). The kid didn't get something they wanted and started throwing a fit. Mom just tried to ignore her, and the kid was escalating pretty quickly. So grandma sweeps up the kid, spanks them (I can't remember if it was a boy or girl) right there in front of God and Everybody, and says something along the lines of "and if you keep that up, I'll give you a worse one."
Everyone in the vicinity applauded.

I can't tell you how many times she's had to play the adult in the room when some idiot parents let their hellspawn little heathens go screaming around, say, a restaurant's dining room. I completely agree. I've known lots of cops, and I've known very few who were interested in improving their shooting skills. Most of those who did uncompensated extra training were mostly concerned with weightlifting.
That's important, but i believe that you should have expert-class proficiency with ALL your tools, especially the ones used in life or death situations.

True story, we have had one bank robbery in our little town and in that one, the getaway driver spooked and left the inside guys on his own. He was forced to flee on foot through a giant ravine where our, then pretty unprofessional, policemen cornered him. In a one hour gun battle, they discharged 700 rounds at the guy and hit him once, on the thumb, with a single buck shot. Whereupon he fell over dead.
The coroner said he was so pumped on cocaine that his heart just burst from the excitement.

Back in the 70s Congress passed a law prohibiting people from essentially selling their organs. Back then getting bone marrow cells was a dangerous and painful process. Bone marrow was listed as one of the prohibited body parts (for sale). Now, there is a new procedure to collect the bone marrow stem cells which is just like giving blood except it takes longer. A three judge panel said that people could accept scholarships, housing allowances, donations to charity in exchange for bone marrow donations. OBAMA's admin is fighting this decision to keep bone marrow donors from receiving any potential benefits. They say it is to 'not disturb' the current donor lists. I'm guessing they don't want it opened up because of Obamacare. Who is anti-science?

I knew the manager and left my cart near his office and said, "I'll be right back."
I drove the three miles to our house, jerked the kid out of his car seat and plopped him in his time out chair facing the wall. Set the timer for five minutes. He was so stunned he didn't make a peep. When the timer went off I didn't say a word, put him back in his car seat and returned to the store.
As we got out of the car I said, "Don't you ever behave like that again with me, understand?" And he didn't (I may have given him a scary look, too. Heh).

Not sure how I missed that, initially.
Small banks had no business taking TARP funds in the first place.
1) The Small banks (except maybe in places like Chicago) were never under that much threat from the Federal Government regarding lending practices in the first place- they were simply too "small potatoes" to be worth suing.
2) It is much harder for small banks to make money in the first place- they simply do not have the economies of scale (not to mention investment portfolios) of the big banks. $1bn may be a substantial-but-not-earth-shattering amount of money for BofA or Chase, but for a small bank? Heck, $1m could be a substantial percentage for a small bank, and would be a drop in the bucket for one of the big banks.
I feel little or no pity.

Many of the younger generation argue that the baby boomers failed to predict the college costs and didn't save enough, ergo, not only do the boomers have loans but their children also have loans. I know, it smacks of the entitlement mentality and mostly comes from the offspring of teachers and union members. It's too funny when you say to them "I took very little from my parents, I've paid my own way and have a lot of loans"....it doesn't compute in their minds, they don't understand why I'm not angry with my parents and why I don't despise them.

When my son was about to be born (he's the first grand-kid on either side) my parents (especially my mom) went crazy about us having to child-proof our home. We responded that we'd rather take the cheaper alternative of home-proofing our children.
We did get the cabinet lock things for where the cleaning products go (not stupid, after all), but no where else. We've never had a problem, and as soon as each of our kids were big enough to get past the "childproofing" we did have, we made sure to explain to them they were not allowed under the sink under any circumstances.
Contra my nephews, who think they're entitled to get into any d*mn thing they see fit...
Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) SMOD 2012 at April 25, 2012 06:25 AM (8y9MW)
@AllenG,
It's been a while since TARP, but I believe (even if it wasn't reported) that there was some strong pressure to take the TARP funds. Strong as in "Take them or we'll FDIC your ass out of existance." Even for banks that weren't struggling by typical measures of struggling (they may not have been doing as well as in the past, but they shouldn't have been anywhere near the hostile takeover stage.)
Similarly the large banks (and some so-called "super-regional" banks) were forced into Shotgun Weddings rather than have the banks they were taking on collapse (See: BofA/CountryWide among several others.) It allowed the FDIC to claim "See no one big has collapsed" while putting banks in dangerous situations, then waiving TARP money at them to bail them out.

I grew up in the early 70s and all it took was the jingle on my mom's belt on her pants to set me straight. If I knew she was thinking about taking it off to use it on us kids, we'd stop dead in our tracks. It was the possibility, not the actual action of it that made us mind. Things are so different today. And in many ways, it shows. So many kids have no respect for adults and know they can get away with bloody murder within the household. I've seen it hundreds of times. I'm obviously not in favor of reckless harm or serious injury....but kids definitely need strong discipline, which can come in many forms.

Morning! I have come to the conclusion that there is a direct correlation between how nicely I am dressed for work and the odds that I will have to go down to the Scary Basement Of Doom and muck about with the dust and spiderwebs covered (rocks in corner) servers to fix something. I just had to vacuum cobwebs out of my hair. Oh I am a happy camperette, let me tell you.
As far as the kids in restaurants thing, I am notorious for my dislike of children. However, if I'm in a family type restaurant, hey, as long as the kid isn't actually kicking me, well, I went there voluntarily and I knew it would be loud with a high likelihood of kids running around. I can't bitch about it when it happens. A nice place? That's different. Last Friday I took myself out for dinner at the one snootier places in town and there was a kid who was pitching a fit. I finally politely asked the server if I could be moved to the other side of the restaurant. The mother heard me and started up the huffy I can't believe you're making a scene and you obviously have no idea how hard it is to go out with a child. I arched a brow, smiled very very very sweetly and said "Ma'am, I am not the one who is pitching a fit. But that can change. Quickly." The server miraculously found me a new seat right after that.

Last week we went to the 1st communion workshop where the kids were supposed to write a letter to Jesus that they put in a basket on the altar. (I thought this was stupid but I'm sure it's just an effort to make the ceremony more meaningful). Apparently my kid thought it was stupid too so while I was talking he folded his arms and refused to write the letter. Said Jesus didn't need letters. (So it was a theological dispute). Husband comes over to get me, I drag the kid into the hallway with the Spock and explain that he needs to write something toot sweet or he's going to clean around all the toilets with a toothbrush. He comes back and writes : Dear Jesus, Thanks for dying for me. I hate the devil too. Love, Hisname.

Of course, she's lying. She waited until Apple's earnings report has already been splashed all over the news so she could say, "Guess how smart I was?!"
Notice she doesn't say how many contracts she bought, whether she wrote them or bought them, when they were written and/or bought, what the strike price was or when the contract expiration date was.
DETAILS, twat. It's the DETAILS that make a successful lie. Saying "Aw, shucks, it was nothing" does not function as a substitute for DETAILS.

My daughter was quite surprised yesterday. I was taking her to her room, and she didn't like it, so she screamed in my face. I reached up and (lightly, but noticeably) slapped her face. The shock she displayed told me it would be... oh, a couple of days at least before she tries to pull that stunt again.
Of course, if I did that in public, I'd probably get thrown in jail these days, but I've found it works pretty well to be willing to be the biggest one. I'll start calm, I'll move to "angry voice," and if that doesn't work (it usually does- virtually always with my son, now), I'll escalate to some form of violence (spankings, ear-twists, flick on the cheek, whatever seems appropriate). I've even gotten to the point where I can pretend to be mad even when I'm thinking "Man, that looked like fun!" about whatever they just did.

The threats were there, but they were all bark and no bite. My dad works for a bank that refused TARP funds. The Federal Government just doesn't have the wherewithal to go after the small banks, and the FDIC wasn't any too interested in cutting off the few banks that were still paying net premiums (as opposed to those that were folding and FDIC was having to pay out).

She quickly changed her reply to yes.
I had her send me a letter home (my kid has read since he was 4) confirming she would do it, and miracles, of miracles, my kid has been fairly good all year

Dear Sir;
Based upon your internet Admission of Guilt of Child Abuse, we are sending the Child Protective Service SWAT Team to ensure your childs saftey. When they appear they will take your child into protective Custody, and you house will get a 'saftey inspection'. If any guns, knives, or other weapons are found, they will be confiscated in the interest of your childs saftey.
A hearing will be held, with NO ATTORNEYS, to access the best plan for your childs saftey in the future.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Oh right, Student loans. Tricky proposition on those. Obviously the Market should just be determining this shit. (my guess is, given current interest rate levels if the market were making these decisions, we'd see rates closer to 4.5-5%).
Previously the Market did determine this IIRC. I was unfortunate enough to have to refinance (you only get one shot at refinancing student loans usually and it's a narrow window.) right as the rates peaked in 2007 because they weren't allowed to free float anymore (they were pegged at 6.5 for about 6 months before the drop I believe.) My wife got in at the low point, so I suppose it all balances out in the end.
The problem is that we've already created this mess, I'm not quite sure how to back out of it safely. Granted since I'm paying 6.5% on my loans, I really don't think that's such an aweful rate, so I'd just let them double anyway. This doesn't solve the problem of slowing down the loan/tuition growth problem.
FWIW, I'll disclose a few things. I graduated Undergrad with about 27k in loans. 10k of those was from a botched attempt to "get the college experience" by living on campus the first year (even though school was in town.) There was some pressure from my parents for this (me being the oldest and first to go to college). So they're quitely paying those down as sort of a "ooops, we got that wrong" apology as well as a downpayment for their future "we're old" care. The other 17K was in those stafford loans, I was paying those down ahead of schedule (choosing to live at home between graduation and my engagement/wedding) until I went to grad school. I took out another 10k for that, but mostly because it was interest free (subsidized) and I got to keep my savings intact. (There was a 12K loan in there as well, but I didn't need it. It paid out before I could decline it, so I took it, put it in a 1 year CD, collected the interest differental between the APR of the loan and the APY on the CD then repaid it off in one lump sum. I don't count that.)
Even all of this, I've only taken out $37k across the entire span of my schooling career, 20K of that (the 10K undergrad and the 10K grad) was either a mistake or gaming the broken system (respectively). I'm totally confused as to how people manage to get anywhere near $80k in loans, much less $200k and why I should feel bad for them. (Even if I had lived on campus my entire 4 years I'd have less than $60k in loans.) The outliers are like doctors (who will make it back) or Lawyers (who should have considered the state of the profession.)

FTFA: "His father had cosigned the loans."
So....guy signed a contract saying he would pay this money back if his son didn't. Son took the money, used it to make a purchase, isn't paying the loan back...guy wants to weasel out after giving his word...and his weaseling makes him some sort of folk hero? No wonder Western Civilization is dead.

There's no painless way out. But if you want a long term solution to the student debt creation industry, it's pretty simple. Let student loans get nuked in bankruptcy, just like anything else. You will see an immediate correction in loan availability and shortly after that a correction in tuition rates to reasonable levels.

@AllenG,
I think this is another case of "Texas is better." My understanding is that the banks around here that got all uppity about taking the TARP funds saw many many more regulators than normal. It was hard to say at the time (without hindsight) what would have happened. They shut down a ton of smaller banks in my state (my dad unrolled the list once, it was slightly distrubing. At it's peak I think there might have been 4/week). So I could see why people were afraid (there is an element of state regulation to would account for this variation.)
I don't remember if the bank my dad works at took TARP or not. If he did, I remember him saying something about sitting on the "useless pile" until they took it back. Too many strings.

That presupposes that the loans are the primary (if not sole) driver of the problem. I'm not sure they are. There's enough other stupidly issued federal monies floating around to artificially inflate tution rates.
I think a better option would be to get rid of the FASFA calcuation method. Colleges are on record as saying they tweak tutition each year to make sure that it's some % higher than their average (or median, I forget which) EFC (number on a FASFA form that's the rough amount you/your family can afford.) By doing so they effectively generate a rate that's guaranteed to grant them stunning amounts of federal aid. When asked "why" these colleges said they felt keeping tutition low and forgoing the aid would make them less competetive (since no family actually uses the EFC numbers when making this choice. They're a load of crap.)

First lesson in CCW training, safety first. Second, you fire until the aggressor is stopped. In his case, it took 14 shots to stop him. I'm more concerned about the 70 shots that didn't hit him. What exactly did they hit and how the hell did policemen with firearms training manage to make contact only with only 17% of the shots fired?
