1 Good Morning Morons. Its Monday, April 9, 2012. I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter, I know I did. Ate like a pig and now must diet for a week. Anyway on this day in 1731 Robert Jenkin's ear was cut off sparking the war of Jenkin's Ear between England and Spain. Actually the war was more about commercial rivalry between England and Spain over the "New World" than about Jenkin's ear, but that was the "bloody shirt" that was waved at parliament by Robert Walpole.

2 Record setting temps during March. Weather folks know why it occurred and state this over and over but the climate turds are going crazy. The average daily high temp for my yard this March was 76.1 vs 67.1 last year and 66.7 in 2010.

Personally I liked the shit out of this Winter, but all you folks in the North need to not consider this a permanent thing despite the general outcry by the warmies. It will return to being cold as hell next Winter.

Yes, this is blatantly unconstitutional, but the earlier liberal courts have deemed cigarette ads et al to be "commercial speech" which is not as protected as pornography. Amazingly the Robert's court has shown no inkling to reverse earlier liberal rulings that are simply bad.

Well, it's probably a constant work in progress. The bureaucrats are no doubt issuing re-interpretations on a daily basis. The tax code is a labryinth of unfathomable complexity, and only a tiny portion really applies in force to individuals who do not qualify as high net worth. Also on the up side - audit resources are limited. Unless you do something really strange that throws up a flag in the computers, or are making LOTS of money, odds are that you have nothing to worry about.

I don't work in a hospital (nor do I play a doctor on TV) but based on what I've read and heard from others, supposedly chest pain of that kind is usually a ticket to the front of the line. But these days who knows. Maybe there are other criteria that have to go along with it.

All I know is, we have a system where the people most likely to abuse the system are allowed to do so with impunity. It's gumming up the works.

I have been using HandR Block for years (it used to be under a different brand name but HR Block bought them out. Haven't had any problems with it before. But I am mainly using it because its cheap and because I have used it forever I am familiar with it and it imports last year's data so it makes filing the new ones a lot easier.

I think if I was starting fresh I would go with Quicken though because that is what I use for a financial program.

Find a new hospital. My BIL had chest pains for two days and insisted on not calling the ambulance. My sister called and asked me to drive him to the emergency room. I had two choices and drove him to the real hospital. He was triaged immediately. It took a few hours for him to get a sonogram but he was in surgery within 15 minutes of getting it. His aorta was becoming detached from his heart.

So he was operated on about three hours after admission. The surgery lasted about eight hours and cost $309,000 (so far). Since my sis is on disability and BIL was just starting a new job they were eligible for Medical Assistance. They're on the hook for about $3,000.

So don't believe the bullshit about poor people who are wiped out over catastrophic illnesses. That only happens to the middle and upper middle class.

Well, then that's a good thing. My view is perhaps biased, because it's based on results more typical with mass conscription scenarios we once had. That, and what a few of my friends encountered on army bases while they were in the service. A LOT of funny business went on when guys were shipped overseas and left the wives behind.

105 @Vic, They did the standard triage, which as just taking blood pressure and temp. They did a blood test, which came back negative, but I don't know how close it was to when he started having the pain. I'll have to ask him to be sure, but I dont think it was immediately done when he came in. He is still in pain on and off, so no idea how that affects the blood test. As far as other testing goes, they did an x-ray but no EKG. What's weird is that the hospital he's at is known for good care, especially for heart issues. So I don't know what the deal is. They're supposed to do a stress test on him today. The whole thing is very disconcerting. My parents are both really pissed off right now, though.

An earmark ban makes as much sense as any "zero-tolerance" law. That is, not a whole lot. It's an excuse to not have to think about what you're doing. What we really need is congressional leadership that will stand up to bad earmarks.

Furthermore, it's not the 0.3% of the budget that goes to earmarking that's the issue. These are one-time payments and some of them go to necessary projects. Many Iraq front-line soldiers got body armor from a Duncan Hunter earmark, for instance. The real problem is the huge percentage of the budget that is on automatic-- the entitlement side, which grows automatically every year.

The only thing I can think of is that whatever the blood test showed reassured the docs that he didnt have a heart attack and so he went to the back of the treatment line. My gut is that they screwed the pooch on this one. I agree with #74 that you should find a better hospital. When you first posted I thought maybe you had gone to a county hospital which is where all the non insurance folks go. There you will get a long line. But if you went to a private pay hospital then they are not too good, in my opinion.

Meh. It's a very obvious, highly symbolic step. The fact is, they still do "targeted spending," or whatever- the big deal is that they can't (well, they're not supposed to) add completely irrelevant, vanity spending.

If you read the article, the problem the legislators have with the ban isn't that it's too sweeping (it's not), it's that they want the ability to throw bribes around to get their pet bills through the House.

And I have absolutely no problem with the House not passing additional legislation. In fact, besides budgets, I wouldn't have a problem if no further legislation was passed by the legislature for the next decade, at lease. (With a few exceptions)

It doesn't effect the test. The test looks for enzymes that the heart releases when it is placed under stress. It is the best indicator there is, other than actual looking at the heart..

Evidently they can show up much later than an hour. But the hour thing is what they kept asking me in the ER when I had my heart attack.

If they did a blood test for the presence of the enzymes and it came back negative he probably did not have a heart attack.

When they do the stress test they should run an EKG as well there. I am damned surprised they did not run one while in the ER.

In any case, while witing oj the EKG I would recommend that he take a 325mg aspirin every day unless he has a problem with aspirins.

Wouldn't this be great? Finally a few years of stability. Consider the example of California. The state's best years were when they had a part time legislature. Then some damn do-gooders thought that they could DO SO MUCH GOOD if only the legislators had to buckle down and work! So, now we have what we have.

America used to be working more or less fine. It's all this tweaking that's killing us. The functioning of a country is like many other processes. It tends to run along more or less fine, needing only periodic adjustment once there is a known, confirmed problem. If you attempt to "optimize" the output of the process with continual adjustment, you're doing nothing but engaging in destructive over-control, inducing more variation than you're fixing.

164 The argument that the South was doomed due to a mismatch of industrial resources is significant, but not definitive IMO. The South was playing for a tie rather than a win. Making the price of holding the South in the Union too high was the objective. If the early Northern generals been better, and the Southern field armies defeated within two years, I think it would have settled down into a guerrilla war which would have been equally, if not more, destructive to the country.

Ahh the foreign visa program. When I used to work in a lab, the lab manager called it "insourcing." It's like outsourcing, except you fly the lower wage workers in for jobs you can't move.

Consider that my Salary at the time was only $5k less than the NIH 0 year postdoc, and the post Doc would work 10 hour days and Saturdays for the same Salary. (I was hourly, so that'd rack up some serious overtime, likely cancelling out the $5 difference several times over.)

(FWIW, I worked my fair share of Saturdays, Sundays and even a few holidays, but it cost them more.)

When the South was winning the initial battles early in the war if they had followed up those early victories with invasion of DC and key points in the North the war would have been over in 2 years because the North would have given up. Some of the major States in the North really did not want any part of that war. NY was one of them.

Jefferson Davis would not allow him to follow up the battles after winning. That is contrary to ALL sound military doctrine.

Yes 60 minutes was notorious for editing interviews. They did a show back in the 70s and interviewed a coworker of my fathers at Honeywell. During the interview they asked a couple of softball questions to start. Then asked very confrontational questions to rile the interviewee up. Then finished with normal questions. Edited out all the confrontational stuff to make the interviewee look like a lying maniac.

General Lee made two invasions into Pensylvania in an effort to make quick knock-out blows. He underestimated the Union's industrial capacity and willpower to continue the war. Lee ended up getting a lot of his best troops and generals killed.

If the Confederacy had fought a defensive war, they had the advantage of interior lines. If they had made the war more of an issue of the Union invading the Confederacy, they may have been able to draw out the war long enough for Great Britain to formally recognize the Confederacy as a sovereign state. This would have probably forced the Union into a peace treaty with the Confederacy (there were still some hard feelings between London and Washington at this time).

As I recall from the 1990s tome How Great Generals Win, WT Sherman was regarded as the most innovative mind of the Civil War. Of course, he had much more to work with in terms of supply and mobility.

As I said: If they really believe it unconstitutional--regardless of the SCOTUS--is should be grounds for a civil disobedience ---> war.

What often puzzles me is that many of those same idiot pukes who love Marx also love Freud. Freud repudiated Marx's view of human nature soundly and definitively. So does objective reality, and every other serious non-Marxist thinker of modern times.

Any person who clings to the marxist paradigm is a madman, or a deliberate lair who uses the ideology as a tool of his own advancement (with no regard for the human costs). Had PEACE been more important that MANDATED UNITY, not counting lives lost and financial ruin of civilians, had the politicians SERIOUSLY negotiated financial consideration for "owners" within a time table to transition slaves (legislate human rights code of conduct) providing legal status for the transition from slavery into indentured service towards freedom for laborers to be self sufficient tax paying US citizens. Based upon the required financial costs which sponsored the 1860s War between the States, we wouldn't be discussing Sherman's March that wouldn't have happened given no military war to conquer and pirate the South economically through reverse discrimination propagating that vicious circle wherein today our POTUS, Congress and SCOTUS argue the convoluted definitions including "Social(ist) (in)Justice".

Everyone should still be sore that the war ever happened. 1. Slavery was on its way out globally, which includes the USA. 2. One region (North) chose to impose tariffs that would massively impact the other region (South), destabilizing the equal distribution of funding federal spending. Congressional budget compromises were hard fought, and the Northern industrial complex with the banking industry were not willing to tax or tariff themselves, their own industry/production, to the same degree as they imposed upon the South. Before arguing, take ObamaCare as an illustration in contemporary terms, whether you'd excuse the victor's heavy hand. If ObamaCare moves forward, as Nebraska et al. special political interests given an Obama waiver are not required to pay though the rest of the nation (including you) is required to pay, would you be sore about that? Were ObamaCare to remain in effect over time and generations, would entities granted waivers like Nebraska have your approval while they still poke sticks in the eyes of the subsequent generations footing the costs, Nebraska telling the tax payers to say thank you for having been abused, starved and much maligned by ObamaCare Enforcers of the "AFFORDABLE Health Care Law."

Excusing Sherman's March that annihilated the entire Southern civilian population's food and shelter and ability to survive post-war outcome, even in defeat, as the men were either killed or maimed? Gen. Lee and the Confederate American Army of the South never did such war crimes to the civilian Northerners during invasive maneuvers, not even to the Northern industrial complex. Evidently, for all their bigotry towards slaves, Southerns were more civilized than Northerners with all their own bigotry towards black labor or neighbors, too close for comfort and not welcome.

Call it Innovative when the POTUS orders the US Military to burn down your State. The "only" acceptable final solution? No, I'd rather maintain the checks and balances of the Constitution than forfeit the basis of unity, EQUALITY UNDER THE LAW. The Great State of Texas is still burdened by the Federal Interventionists striking down Texans constitutional right to function constitutionally as other states do, electoral process inhibited by Big Fed Brother since rejoining the USA.

It's better to find logical solutions to differences than to instigate a war "Because I Could" (Clinton's wagging dog). Damn War. And damn the hypocrisy of human bigotry regardless of regional practice. Concerning those who believe that hateful destruction consummated with the genocide of "others" to be not only "acceptable" and "good" strategy and tactics, but to be the only virtuous final solution?
