— Gabriel Malor Happy Friday.
The family of Romney's "bullying victim" has released a statement saying they're "aggrieved" that he would be used to further a political agenda. They also say that the Washington Post's portrayal of him is "inaccurate."
"Lobster hostilities" lead to boat sinkings in Friendship, Maine. (Couldn't resist the headline.)
"Sleep loss from 'social jet lag' is tied to obesity." (Again, couldn't resist the headline, which feels like it was auto-generated from a list of things that are big in pseudo-science right now.)
And, finally, a clash between church and brunch in Brooklyn. What bad economy?

The Maine lobster wars should eventually get The Rumford Meteor treatment. It's a site devoted to taking actual Maine news stories and attaching Onionesque headlines.

I don't like romney but that is the very last thing he should do. Instead he should hunker down and analyze the economy as it is, based on the emergency conference call and other signs that are emerging. He needs to make sure he knows what's coming down the road and then he can begin to speak to the real issues of the economy.

They will trash any private citizen, rich or poor, living or dead, to advance Obama's agenda. Not one of us is safe from this. I am certain Mr. Lauber's surviving family members never imagined that their brother's reputation would be posthumously destroyed by the Washington Post. The Post didn't even have the courtesy to notify them ahead of time, let alone interview them.
And as we have discussed over countless threads, George Zimmerman's life is ruined. The mob will now follow him wherever he goes, helped by a press who has the narrative they want and will not let it go.
Who will be next? Some small businessman who borrowed money from Bain? A Mormon who went to Mitt for religious counseling? A contractor on his home in California?
This is a press which is as thuggish as their idol, and is far from the "watchdog" they purport to be. They are disgusting people and I look forward to the time that they are unemployed losers who have to eat out of trashcans.

There was a strategy? Day-um....
Because what it looked like was Biden's dementia took over his mouth (for Bast's sake, "Dr Jill", take the jackass to a neurologist), then that squishy puppet Jay Carney forgot to see whose hand was up his ass before automatically parroting the last line fed to him, then during a break in SportsCenter someone mentioned the incidents to SCOAMF, and he cobbled something together on a napkin before the start of the Pacers-Magic game.

Miss M, I think you are being too easy on the members of the press.
I think that one good thing coming out of this campaign is that Romney is not lying back and thinking of the Presidency, he, his team, and numerous bloggers are responding to the crap the media is trying to sell within days if not hours. The significance of even a weaselly retraction from the WaPo is considerable and starts to demonstrate to many of the low information voters that there may be a Vast Left Wing Conspiracy after all.
The fact that the press is willing to (and has) savage ordinary citizens in support of the god-king doesn't win many hearts and minds either.

It's just so freakin' delicious a quote. Romney just needs to add, "While Mr. Obama is forgetting about his recession, I'm sure not. And I bet you can't forget about it either. Maybe his golf game and campaigning are eating into his 'policy time,' I dunno. Let's just say that I'll retain my focus on the important issues that affect America." And so on. Add snark to flavor.
I'm pretty confident Romney's team will know what to do with that.

Sidewalks are for pedestrians. Municipal public property is not owned by the private industry or a cafe to usurp without a permit. And those permits could be a good source of public revenue for the town funding upgrades to the sidewalks.
If there's a regulation on the books, then either remove it or accept it.
When sidewalks are blocked by vendors, panhandlers, or tables and chairs and customers very possessive of their static position, or when pedestrians are run down by wheels, there is a problem in public safety. Also, how are fire regulations enforced if the crowd inside the cafe can't get outside because the door and sidewalk are blocked with tables, chairs and congestion of people?
Pedestrians could also support keeping their town's sidewalk passage right of way intact by protecting handicap enforcement. All things public must provide public access.
slow news friday?!

-Forgiving myself for backsliding occasionally, and recommitting immediately. Wipe it from the memory banks and soldier on.

Bull's-eye, Miss Marple.
Would that THEY suffer their own rot rather than victimizing our nation. How are those tax funded media corporation bail-outs going? Not THAT many years ago, Congress was talking about bailing out the Grey Lady. No news does not mean good news given the media's black-out of real news.
The media sponsors and manipulates the worst malevolence from the past. For a time yellow journalism was at least masked, but has emerged to own the Obama "One Voice" administration policy to make all Americans losers in drag from the grave.

Every day of my life I was waiting to finish high school so that I could leave Sweden , go to Israel and join the army. My desire to do that started when I was nine years old. Spot on. You remember OSUT, right?
"Are you in pain, son?"
"No, Drill Sergeant! That's just the weakness leaving my body!"<<<<
I couldn't believe the despair some recruits went through. It's not like they're going to kill you. Not on purpose, anyway.
You just go until the fatigue and pain cause you to collapse. If you've been drinking your water, that's going to be well before causing death.
Catch your breath and then go some more. It isn't easy, but it is simple.

The proposed change seeks to close that loophole by ensuring that anyone who sells pets over the Internet, by phone or mail order can no longer do so sight-unseen. Sellers either must open their doors to the public so buyers can see the animals before they purchase them, or obtain a license and be subject to inspections by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
"We feel this is certainly a much-needed change to an outdated system," said Rebecca Blue, deputy undersecretary for marketing and regulatory programs.

"There really is no fairness and no justice when the law applies differently to different people depending on which courthouse you're sitting in," he said at the "State of the Mobile Net" conference sponsored by the Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee.
"For that reason alone, we think Congress should clarify the legal standard," he said.
One civil liberties advocate sought to challenge that assertion, saying the Obama administration had made the same argument during the Supreme Court GPS case and it had been soundly rejected.

Freeport Area Library Board President Donna Michael said the books had been out since Oct. 19, or 240 days and $81.60 in fines.
Michael said she had no choice but to get police involved after two phone calls, a postcard and three letters failed to get the books returned.
"After not getting any response from the certified letter, I turned the file over to the Freeport Police Department," said Michael.
The girl's mother returned the books late Thursday afternoon.
Police could have filed charges against the girl's parents had the books not been returned.

Current law allows permitting for “programmatic” killing of bald eagles, which “is recurring, is not caused solely by indirect effects, and that occurs over the long term or in a location or locations that cannot be specifically identified.”
The USFWS notes that permits “may authorize lethal take that is incidental to an otherwise lawful activity, such as mortalities caused by collisions with rotating wind turbines.”

That's how it will reach the low-info voters it's meant for. Something like this doesn't much affect people informed about politics, e.g. anyone who read the actual Washington Post article: they're not basing their votes for or against Romney or Obama on this trifle.
But the people who hear of this not from the news, but from the "Romney as bully" sketches and jokes-- they're the susceptible audience.

The story says that Mom is a homeschooler of a couple kids and is a big fan of attachment parenting, promoted by pediatrician Barry Sears. Didn't Jr. look attached to mom? “The economy’s a mess, it’s dead flat. America has lost its Triple-A rating . . . You know better than Obama does,” Bill said.
Bill Clinton insisted he had “no relationship” with Obama and had been consulted more frequently by his presidential successor, George W. Bush.
Obama, Bill Clinton said, “doesn’t know how to be president” and is “incompetent.”
But Hillary resisted the entreaties, according to two of the guests interviewed for the book.
“Why risk everything now?” a skeptical Hillary told her husband, emphasizing that she wanted to leave a legacy as secretary of state.
“Because,” Bill replied, his voice rising, “the country needs you!”
“The country needs us!” added Bill.

I taught for years, bringing students together monthly for performance, parents welcome but not younger siblings (talking/cry babies not fair to student performers).
One student's mother arrived with his 4-year-old brother, promising to be quiet. As students performed, out of the blue she popped out her big breast and stuck it the boy's mouth. The two dads in the audience goggled at her massive mammary gland exposed in full view of EVERYONE. How big was it? (drum roll) As big as her 4-year-old's head. The lengths some will go to maintaining augmented breasts and "innocent" sexual attention. Her boob distracted everyone from the point of student performances. She just had to make everything all about herself. Over protective mothering makes for big titty babies and weirdly demanding expectations and relations. I was disappointed when her eldest chose to urinate without ever asking to use a toilet. Needless to say, the end.
It's not just student immaturity. Obsessive and neglectful parents impose problems for the teaching/learning developmental process.

Joffen, if this doesn't take, and I really hope it does, pick a date in the future, and not New Year's or your birthday or any other signifcant date, and announce to everyone you are quitting on that date. I even told old ladies on the street that I was quitting on Labor Day Weekend. Then take as much time as you can to be away from people and get the "meanies" out of your system, and then quietly feel smug every time you see the price of a pack of cigs. And occasionally sniff alittle of someone's leftover smoke out on the street - man, that always smells so good.
But having done all of the above, I won't ever smoke again.

And:
"U.S. Senate candidate Joe Donnelly reiterated his position Thursday that marriage should be between a man and a woman, saying he didnÂ’t feel pressure to change his views a day after fellow Democrat President Barack Obama said he supported same-sex marriage."
You think that's good enough Joe? No Joe, it is not. We're going to keep asking that same question. Until we get the truth: You will support whatever the Party tells you to support.
Let me make it clear (in case there was any doubt): Indiana is not "lean R" or "likely R" anymore. It is "solid R." If your candidate has to take the Republican position a day after the JEF's "historic" announcement (when the press has been wall-to-wall positive), you're in trouble.

In any case, how is "attachment parenting" a thing? The fostering of total dependence well past the age when it's needed shows itself as a bad thing on right on the surface, why keep digging?

America is pushing back: they sense that "If I Wanted America to Fail" video concept. They are being directly affected and waking up.
One of the MSM's essential weaknesses is that the gay community is overrepresented within their ranks. This adds to the "bubble effect". Gays are more affluent than Average Joes and Janes...due to so many enjoying DINK status.
While the rest of the nation is burdened with extreme erosion of their home values, of job loss and re-hire at a fraction of what they previously earned, of being stuck with Junior AND having to pay his medical until age 26 because college grads can't get jobs...the same sex marriage drum relentlessly pounded really doesn't RESIGNATE.

The thing about prostitutes is that they are mostly illegal here in the United States, they carry diseases and sometimes they just get tuckered out. But by the year 2050, concerns about spending an evening with a lady of the night could be a thing of the past.
Researchers at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand wrote in the journal “Futures” that sex robots are not only possible, but could be better than real-life prostitutes.
“Sex robots are absolutely inevitable… in fact they already exist,” Michelle Mars and Ian Yeoman point out.

Nothing. They shouldn't be on the front of a magazine or in that position or advertising themselves.
The most unbelievably thing about nursing is the intimacy. This display is not intimate. People who haven't nursed don't really understand what it is like but this is really the antithesis of what it is. Picture the most intimate TENDER moment (not you EoJ) that you have had in your life, then bastardize it, make it tawdry and then put it on the front of a magazine. This whole thing reminds me of the crotch grabbing at the National Anthem but worse.

The biggest U.S. bank by assets said on Thursday that it had lost $2 billion on bad bets on credit derivatives, made by a London trading desk, run by a man other traders have alternately dubbed "The London Whale" and "Voldemort." The office is intended to hedge the giant bank's credit risk, not increase it.
In a regulatory filing on Thursday, the bank said that, since the end of March, its chief investment office "has had significant mark-to-market losses in its synthetic credit portfolio, and this portfolio has proven to be riskier, more volatile and less effective as an economic hedge than the firm previously believed."
In a quickly scheduled conference call Thursday evening, CEO Jamie Dimon, who has been persistently critical of government efforts to regulate banks, said JPMorgan's trading losses were due to "egregious and self-inflicted mistakes," from trades that were "poorly executed and poorly monitored."

All of this puts some recent news from Forbes into perspective:
The Washington Post Co. reported its first-quarter earnings on Friday, and the news coming out of the newspaper division was mostly grim. The unit lost $22.6 million in the quarter, with revenue down 8% and revenue from print advertising specifically falling 17%.
Meanwhile, the Post just reported one of the biggest circulation drops of any major newspaper with the lucrative Sunday edition selling 5.2% fewer copies and the daily edition skidding almost 10%. Oh, and newsroom leaders are so distressed about the way the business decline is affecting them, they held a secret meeting with the paper’s president, Steve Hills — without inviting executive editor Marcus Brauchli.

I don't have a problem with the truly handicapped, i.e., crippled, receiving some accommodation. I have a major problem with the "handicapped" including people who are merely grossly fat. The parking spaces for fat fucks should be on the far side of the parking lot.

I have a problem with them receiving accommodation because of the coercive power of the government.
You'd think, from listening to the ADAA, that, before the ADA people in wheelchairs were stuck as homebodies who couldn't do anything.
Yeah, well, tell that to the President who spent much (most?) of his time in a wheelchair.
People are already willing to make those accommadations, the government never needed to force them to do so. And now, the ADA has gone even further and things that aren't disabling are considered "disabilities."

Posted by: Jane D'oh at May 11, 2012 07:11 AM (UOM48)
@AllenG,
It gets wierder too, when you start saying what an accomdation is. Consider the wheelchair pool lift thing. This is a noble goal, and many people already meet the goal with temporary lifts that get stored over in the corner until needed (Reasonable Accomadation).
But then the Gov'ment says "nope, it's gotta a permenant lift!" which is a bit strange. So we've got a case here with the Ends (access to things like buildings or pools) is agreeable but the Government is being all wonky on the means.
Reminds me of that Chipotle ADA case a while ago, where the person couldn't "get the Chipotle experience" because the counters were too high. Chipotle already has a policy where they will make your burrito at a table for you so you can have that experience. I believe a California court rule that "wasn't enough" and they needed to lower the counters or something (which isn't a reasonable accomadation, since the employees would suffer then, unless you sunk all the floors, which isn't good from a cleaning standpoint.)

In an exclusive preview of The Amateur by Human Events, ObamaÂ’s longtime physician reveals the lack of humanity in ObamaÂ’s character and carelessness with which he enacted the entirely politicized health insurance reform, The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, often called ObamaCare.
Scheiner said that he believes the president miscalculated politically and that the health reform is ultimately doomed to fail. Worse, Scheiner doubts the character of a man who holds the highest and most influential office in America: “I think there is too much of the University of Chicago in him. By which I mean he’s academic, lacks passion and feeling, and doesn’t have the sense of humanity that I expected.”
The author, Klein, later in the book, compares Obama’s personality to early the 20th Century progressive president, Woodrow Wilson. By quoting the historian Forrest McDonald, who called Wilson’s perception of himself, “little short of Messianic,” Klein says that McDonald’s description of Wilson “fits Obama to a T.”

Re: Handicapped. I have a Handicapped MIL, we'll either use the Walker (which she's not great at, but it makes her feel independent) or the wheelchair (which is obviously better for longer distances.)
In any case, either way, when we're out we need that Handicapped spot, or she might not make it into the store (and with the Wheelchair, we need at least open space next to the car to set up.)
Wife and I pull into said spot, get some angry looks from the lady in the adjoining spot when we get out (we always get out before MIL to make sure she doesn't fall getting out.) Just ice cold stares. Then we get MIL and the look softens a bit (not much). Angry lady gets out of her car, she's old but doesn't seem to have any trouble walking at all (certainly not compared to my barely stable MIL that takes 2 of us flanking her to make sure she makes it inside.)
Yeah, I did the "Go away" handflick motion to her when I got out. I'm an ass.

First, I'd like to point out that 65 assholes is a figure obviously done by polls weighting democrats. Weekly averages are only about 47.
Second, as we all know, the AOSHQ Code of Conduct was modeled after the Constitution, which means it's unreadable and evolving.

I have the same issue with my MIL who has severe osteoarthritis. We pull up into a HC slot and get out and get dirty looks. I get my MIL out of the back seat and everyone's OK.
Except for one cranky old lady one time who kept coming at me even as I was handling my MIL her cane. After about 3 seconds of her shit I just looked at her and said, "You're not pretty enough to get away with that attitude, Cupcake. Now back off."

Yeah that sucks, big time.
We're so cautious about it we don't even use the Handicap tag when picking her up from somewhere (it's a temporary tag). We've gotten some..hostility...before when we've done that. Usually the people who complain at us don't look handicapped at all.
FWIW, technically if we're going somewhere to get the MIL we're within our rights to use the tag (understanably) even if she didn't come with us (say she's meeting us there with other people.) I even told one person "you can wait here until we come out as proof that we're picking up someone who actually qualifies for this spot.

I think you were totally justified!
I don't have a problem with genuinely handicapped, infirm individuals using "handicapped" spaces. That's what they're there for. And while I agree with AllenG that the government shouldn't mandate them, I also recognize that if they didn't do so, everyone would park there regardless of disability status. So it's one gubmint thing I agree with.
I DON'T agree with the wide-ranging, insane number of "disabilitiies" that will get you a handicapped sticker, tag, or license plate. They should strictly be for people with severe mobility issues, such as the wheelchair bound. I'm sorry, but obesity is not a handicap. I don't care how long it takes you to walk across the parking lot. I don't care if you have to stop every five steps to catch your breath. If you're obese, you do not deserve a handicap space. If you're obese, you should be TRYING to park as far away as reasonably possible so you can get some exercise! I realize that some cases of obesity are due to medical issues such as thyroid problems or diabetes medication; but those SHOULD be controllable.
And as for mental or emotional disorders? Um, no. If you've got a mental disorder that doesn't prevent you from driving, then you can frigging walk, okay? And the same goes for emtotional disorders. I'd rather a pregnant woman or an elderly person be able to use the handicapped spaces WITHOUT a handicap tag than a perfectly healthy person with borderline personality disorder who HAS a handicap tag.

I will say I've been known to use the "Pregnant and New Moms" parking spots that seem to be cropping up when I have the MIL and the handicapped spots are full. I figure it's a bit of a hiearchy, and no one is likely to complain.
There's a stability scale whereby something in the mid 20s is "heavily drunk" (it measures your ability to not fall.) MIL scores between a 4-9 depending on how she's doing. I think that's with the walker. (Without the Walker she can't stay standing for more than about 30 seconds before she falls.

I think being from Maryland really hurt Steele in that he was so used to always having to play nice-nice with the donks that he didn't know wtf to say whenever he was on a lib talk show (of which going on them in the first place was a big negative) and ended up stepping all over his johnson and getting everybody pissed off. On the good side of the ledger, he knew enough to keep his fucking yap shut during the 2010 elections and didn't engage in hissy fit turf wars with the Tea Party like Rove did when one of his squishballs got their pansy asses kicked.
