Yes, but they also have Terms of Service to which you must agree before having a blog hosted. So long as you're operating within those ToS, they're not supposed to be able to pull the plug.
Sure, they have plenty of weasel words and phrases to make it relatively easy to shut you down if they disagree with you, but they don't enforce those universally (it seems). I use blogger because I can't really justify a real host at the moment. Once I can, I'll migrate, until then, I'd like the relative surety that Google isn't just going to shut down the Dedicated Tenther blog.
Which reminds me... I need to go home and export all my posts this evening just in case.

First: I don't believe that. We're not the premier scientific country because we spend so much money, but because we're the best (or one of the best) at safeguarding intellectual property rights (to the point we go too far, sometimes). People like doing research and publishing it here because they get to control it and see part of any profits.
Second: If we weren't taxed as highly as we are, private companies would step up and do that. Imagine the amount of money, say, General Mills could make if they had a major breakthrough in disease and drought resistant crops. All the while food would become cheaper and more people would be saved from the threat of starvation.

Actually, the Human Genome Project was stalled until it became private.
Wiki, of course, downplays Celera's contribution to the project but if it weren't for them we'd still be paying beau coup bucks and the human genome still wouldn't have been fully sequenced:

What this made me realize was that Breitbart had a habit of taking people at their word, and we have no idea who he hired to do work around his home, computer upgrades, car repair, etc. And for all we know, tapes could have been withheld because other people on the staff have been threatened.

The HGP was a huge boondoggle that cost billions more than it should have, precisely because the government was involved. There was no real need for the data produced, especially at the expense of other, more worthy projects that weren't funded so some asshole could brag the he had "cracked the genetic code."
The price for the technology just a few years later dropped to essentially nothing. The project should have been delayed until the technology caught up, and then it could have been completed for a few million, rather than 1000x that.

No, not at universities: they know where their bread is buttered (as it were). It's no accident, however, that private companies have a very, very large portion of their R&D here in the states, though.

My remembrance from the book was that he spoke French. What had struck me about this was that growing up after watching the old movie Adventures of Robin Hood and how Errol Flynn was waiting for him to come home and set things right, then meeting him.

In many places around the world it's STILL viewed as a dysfunction, ne? Though I find it darkly comic that Afghanistan is home to some of the most ideologically severe forms of Islam and sharia law, which forbids homosexuality on pain of death, yet you can't throw a rock in a typical Afghani village without hitting a guy who's had sex with a young boy.
I believe that there are SOME homosexual individuals who really are homosexual from birth; that it really is something genetic. But I tend to believe that these individuals are a MUCH smaller percentage of the already small "homosexual" population than people who imagine themselves to be gay so they can be transgressive and buck the traditional gender paradigms. I don't think it's necessarily a conscious choice on their part so much as a reactionary response. Those are the folks who come out gay in high school, go through college dressed in frumpy clothes or flamboyant outfits, and end up getting jobs as community organizers. Then fifteen years after graduation they realize that they actually kind of yearn for a partner of the opposite sex, so they end up calling themselves bisexual before transitioning into a 100% heterosexual lifestyle.
My watch words when it comes to homosexuality are "natural" versus "normal." Natural is something which occurs without human interference; normal is the predominant paradigm in society. Albinism is natural, but it's not normal. Dwarfism is natural, but it's not normal. It's very possible that there is a natural genetic predisposition to homosexuality in some people, but that doesn't make it normal. I wouldn't discriminate against a homosexual man or woman any more than I would an albino or a dwarf, but I don't appreciate being demeaned and called homophobic because I don't believe homosexuality is a normal state of being.

There will always be a need for government funded and run research. Military applications alone cover medicine, electronics, mathematics, physics, aerodynamics and materials science.
What I'd like to see eliminated is all the social "science" "studies" and devolve all the environmental stuff down to the state level. Let your local politicians justify raising your taxes to study spotted owls, if they have the balls for it.

Certainly such research helps the military, but I'm not sure that it shouldn't be done completely privately and then the military have to buy it.
Of course, ever since DARPA, that particular genie is out of it's bottle, and I don't think we can afford to put it back in.

There is a reason that the only monarch who has a huge statue in front of Parliament is Richard I.
A better history of early English kings would be the ones done by Thomas Costain on the Plantagenets. Goes from Willliam the Conqueror to Richard III, in 4 volumes.
Richard I wasn't the most bright of kings, and he was basically a warrior. However, he was very popular even though he wasn't in England much due to the Crusades. At least that is the view of Costain.
Also, most of the early kings after William the Conquerro spoke French, because they WERE French, having descended from the French guy who came over and defeated Harold. French was only spoken at court for the first 100 years or so, and even after that it was the preferred language of the nobility for quite some time.

Just look at all of the excellent quality aftermarket stuff that is produced (very quickly in response to need) for our troops: magazine pouches and sunglasses and water back-packs and sniper rifles and optics, etc.

What happens if one of the privateers goes rogue and takes up piracy themselves? What are the legalities in various ports of call regarding weapons on private ships? Is it considered a crime if an armed escort ship sinks a pirate vessel or kills an alleged pirate before any boarding has taken place? I admit naivete regarding the law of the high seas, but I think there's a lot of legal and jurisdictional red tape that would prevent, or at least prohibitively hinder, the formation of such an escort.

The English kings were crowned also as "King of France" through the Tudors. The Plantagenets had far more land on the continent that had to be defended from the Kings of France (who had relatively little territory) and one another (Henry II actually fought a rebellion from his own sons in France) than backward, backwater England. The fuck up was King John who not only lost the holdings in France including his mother's Acquitaine but pissed off the english barons so much they made him sign the Magna Carta.
Had Richard lived and reproduced, the Magna Carta may not have been forced on the King and we would have had a different trajectory.

I was in DC a few years back and was going through the Mall just after dusk. It was also rather foggy. I quite literally walked into the Korean War memorial and was a bit taken aback shall we say. When I realized what it was, I burst into tears. It was incredibly moving.

Romney's overall lead stands at 46 percent to 43 percent. Last month, the two candidates were deadlocked. There are a few underliers that spell disaster for Barack Obama.
First is the women vote. What the heck happened here? Last month, Obama led among women by 6 percentage points. In this poll, he's trailing Romney by 2 points in the women's vote. It's an even bigger shift when you consider other surveys, like last month's CNN poll that found Obama destroying Romney among women by 16 points.

I admit I haven't watched any of the series yet, despite being a big fan of Peter Dinklage (EXCELLENT pick to play Tyrion), but I have read the books. When I first heard they were going to make it into a TV series I asked myself, "How the hell are they going to do that? Main characters are constantly being killed." That might work in the book universe, where the people who are going to plow through and read all of it are fans of the writing style and story. But in the TV world where killing off a fan-favorite character could mean a massive hit in ratings? I don't know how that would work.

When my father retired he took over grocery shopping from my mother. The last time she went out to buy some meat for... something (maybe a lasagna), she nearly had a heart attack when she saw the cost. What had cost only $0.99 a couple years ago was $4.99!
She hates Obama anyway, so she would never have voted for him. But boy oh boy, is she EAGER to check the box for Romney in November.

Yup. I do the majority of food shopping in our household and food costs have gotten bad. What used to be a $40-50 dollar trip is now easily $75-$80. Thanks, Obama!

Yup. I'm trying to get back to actually cooking for myself again so I went and did a major shopping trip vs. just grabbing some sandwich stuff or prepared stuff a few weeks ago and I nearly had a heart attack at the total. Hell, it may actually be cheaper for me to hit the dollar menu at McD's.

I was rereading Jaws the other night and I'd forgotten just how much the book is about class distinctions (not to mention the whole adultery subplot) and there was a bit in there about how you knew what you were going to eat each night based on what the specials were at the grocery store. That bit sounded like it could have been written last week.
