9 Yesterday the Maine legislature passed a bill cutting welfare benefits such as MaineCare.  When the community organizer was on the radio this A.M., he said in one breath that it was too bad the Republicans had instituted a massive structural tax cut last year, instead of funding the welfare state; then in the next breath, he said there was no need to cut funding for MaineCare, because revenue to the State is coming in far ahead of projections. What I got out of it was that lowering taxes increases revenue, and we should do more of it. Kudos to the Republicans for standing up to the special interests

Its coming from those rich enough to afford other places. I don't know about other stuff, but Walmart had the best food prices in town when I was going to grad school (and had decent bread, one of the few things I am picky about). Walmart made the difference between being able to live on my assistantship stipend and borrowing money during the school year. You won't find me bad-mouthing Walmart anytime soon.

Here in suburban Texas, I have seen several "mom and pop" stores which have not only survived, but thrived, after the arrival of Walmart in town.  They have to accept that they're filling a different niche than Walmart does, and they have to be the absolute best at that niche.  Some of them will fail.  Others will flourish.

For instance, if I want hardware/building advice, I might go to Lowes or Home Depot, but I'm more likely to go to my local hardware store.  Why?  Because the family that runs that hardware store have, collectively, forgotten more about DIY construction than the employees at Lowes or Home Depot are ever likely to know.

133 I was in a home depot recently.  If there were 8 employees, including management, in the store I would be shocked.  And I was on my own if I had a question.  I went to two home depots.  The first one had what I wanted but it was up on the tippie top in stock.  I knew it was easier to get in my car and drive to another home depot to see if they had the item out and down on the bottom than it was to ask an employee to get on that orange ladder and pull it down for me.  I went to the other home depot, they had it and I bought it.  The motivator here was price and availability.  For what I bought, no one else had it or it was prohibitively expensive.  It was part of a mom's day gift so time was of the essence.

Later that day I was in Best Buy watching people use their iphones to get better prices on the internet for what they were looking at in Best Buy. 

The bad part about internet shopping is that they used to have one price and stick with it, just like brick and mortar stores.  I've noticed if google figures out that I'm looking for something and trying to find the best price that places like amazon suddenly up the price.  I could have bought the item and had it delivered in two days during the week, but, when I didn't pounce on the initial amazon price, they raised it.  So they secured a nice sale for home depot in person without shipping.   I've been shopping on the internet for years, I'm not the only shopper who has noticed how quickly the price changes at sites like amazon when they know you want something.

That's pretty enlightened management imo (unlike every large dump where I've worked where they sporadically scam people with the latest "empowerment" fad which is barely lip service toward disguising their "we're gonna do things the way we always have") because it certainly created good will in me for the store.  Btw, I didn't wish to imply that I'm anti mom and pop stores per se.  There used to be a local hardware store that kicked Home Depot's ass as far as advising people with insight to the characteristics of some of the older housing stock in the area.  It was their expertise that overruled any relatively small price considerations.

CVS sucks. My sister has about a dozen meds and they constantly screwed them up. The final straw: they said Medicaid had changed its formulary and they could only fill her oxycodone prescription from a certain manufacturer and they didn't have any.

I tried several other pharmacies using the manufacture's ID No. CVS gave me, explaining to them about the formulary change. None of them carried it either. Finally, totally exasperated, I called a family run pharmacy with a good reputation. When I explained the problem he said CVS was full of shit. He said if a formulary change had been made his pharmacy would have stocked it, and they didn't. He was able to fill the prescription in 15 minutes.

Just before this fiasco my BIL had open heart surgery and is now on 10 meds of his own. Because of their constant fuck ups CVS lost over 20 prescriptions worth thousands of dollars. The family run pharmacy also makes free home deliveries.

CVS also totally fucked up on refunding $170 of my BIL's meds that medicaid reimbursed my BIL for.

Once things calm down I'm going to write a letter to the head of CVS and I hope heads roll.

In the past year Walgreens has screwed up my prescriptions twice. The first time, I had two prescriptions but when I got home, noticed that they had put the same pills in both bottles, which, for someone with poor eyesight, might have resulted in kidney damage.

The second time they mislabeled the bottle: It should have read 1 pill daily and they labeled it 2 pills daily.

Screw them.

(We have a ton of prescriptions too) They have found ways to help with the cost of the brand name prescriptions we have, to make up for what insurance won't pay, they know us by name when we come in, and are just lovely. I wish the Targets were better here, but they are not. Back in Indiana, Target even had one of the better grocery sections in my neighborhood. Around here, I confess I shop at Harmon's, which is a pretty upscale local (regional?) chain. I can't help it. They have a billion kinds of cheese, good produce, and often have good fresh fish (usually trout). And it's the closest, plus their gas is cheaper than Costco when I use the grocery discount.

220 I use Sam's but you have to know your prices.  Some things they are way cheaper on, other things they are more expensive.  Also,  they have a sneaky habit of packaging things in odd sizes so price comparison is more difficult (bottles of water in 30-packs instead of 24,  for example). 

I hate to go to Walmart because it is dirty.  The only thing I buy there are shipping boxes,  for which they are cheaper than my on-line supplier.

Target is catering to the hipsters,  so their frozen food is heavy on appetizers and diet dinners.   Also,  they discontinue their linens really quickly so if you want a set,  get it while it's there.

Most groceries I get at Kroger,  which is not the cheapest but is the closest and also has a pharmacy,  which I use.  They have helped me get discount meds due to not being insured, and I appreciate their service.

Lowes is better than Home Depot here, but for most stuff I use the local Tru-Value,  which has been here forever and actually will sell me one screw  as opposed to a pack of 20.  Also they give good advice and seem to always have what I need. Also,  easy in and out,  as opposed to walking half a city block to get to a department.

Anyone can learn to spin the news just like a major-media editor! ItÂ’s fun! ItÂ’s easy!

When investigating news stories, it is often tiresome or inconvenient for reporters to seek actual facts before determining the preferred outcome. Fortunately, for stories like the George Zimmerman / Trayvon Martin incident, the "major media" have developed a handy set of rules to help them assign guilt without the nuisance and drudgery of having to pursue such outdated concepts as "objective truth."

The general rule:
Any white blood in a presumed aggressor makes that person white (or at most "white Hispanic"), while any minority blood in a presumed victim makes that person a minority.
ItÂ’s that simple!
Extra points are added for being liberal, female, Muslim or atheist, poor, or gay. Subtract points from anyone who is conservative, male, Christian, middle-class or higher, straight, or a veteran.
(Also, please note: Asians are "dishonorary" whites, but self-hating Jews are equal to Muslims.)

Another great advantage of these "situational race" rules is that they work both ways! That is, when you consider an incident, not only can how the people were involved help you to figure out their races, but their races can be used to determine how to say they were involved!

Let's see how that works:
George Zimmerman is a registered Democrat who tutors minority kids, but this is cancelled out by his support for the rule of law (de facto conservatism.) Therefore his race becomes (of course) the paramount consideration. On one side he is Hispanic with a touch of African blood, however, his father was white. He admits having shot a black kid; all other considerations are irrelevant.
The final score is:
A bigoted racist “white Hispanic” shot an innocent black kid.

Another example:
Before Barack Obama was well-known, if he were to have shot George Zimmerman, how would it have been described? Hint: Obama was raised by his white mother's liberal parents in Hawaii. No   they  don't.  That  idea  was  disproved  by  the  collapse  of   AIG,  which  was  only  hours   away   from   flushing   trillions  in  derivatives  down  the  drain.    You're  hoping   that   in  a  collapse  all   the  derivative  contracts  will  be  honored  in  an  orderly  fashion... good  luck  with  that.

Since  this  isn't  a  real  concern  for  you,   maybe  you  should  load  up  on  bank  stocks.
