First it is a "temporary injunction" only. Second it is based on more than fears. And third and the most pissed offedness of all; the GD Holder DOJ did not even present a defense
I am not in love with this law, but this is how assholes who want gut the WOT work, they get a group of liberal assholes to sue, then don't even present a defense. That is how Pigford I and II came into being.
Congress needs to act to stop this kind of shit from the DOJ. And before any of the libtards that hang out here say anything, yes Bush did it too.
What we need is a law that say if the DOJ fails to present an active defense of an enacted, which IS their damn job, the boss is automatically fired, no questions asked.

I live in Madison, and on my drive to work this morning I actually counted the houses that had either a "recall walker" or a "barret" sign of any type. There were 13. That might seem high for a 20 minute drive, *but* before the primary there were double that. Almost every 3rd or 4th house had a sign before the primary, now, not so much. I'm not entirely sure where the signs all disappeared to, but they're gone.

I think they have given up on that chicken. The strategy with squirrels is that you throw them out there for the press, get a news cycle going to divert attention. When the press has milked it for all its worth or just before, throw out another one.

G-d Blackberry has now been frozen (trackball/cursor don't respond so it's useless) for 24 hours. The last step in the "troubleshooting" is to bring the damned thing to a retail repair place. I bought it at Best Buy so I'm brining it there. I have no clue about whatever warranty we may or may not have and the wife is out of town so I'll never find it. Anyone have any experience with Best Buy assistance/repair?

Have you tried removing the battery? Wait ten minutes then p[ut it back in.. that sometimes resets those things.

That's too bad, because the Eastern shore is great. My wife and I have spent several short vacations there and have loved it. We even looked at houses (1/3 the cost of our house in NJ) and toyed with the idea of simplifying. But I know that they are even less gun-friendly than NJ, and the tax burden is, as you point out, rising rapidly.
So they won't be getting our money.

IOW if you want a phone, get a damn phone. A nice simple cell phone. If you want a computer device that allows you hit the internet, store stuff and have some software, get a notebook/netbook (not a laptop).
When you try to get one device that does it all there are compromises on both sides that either make the device less usable, or less reliable.
In addition, if one tears up or is lost, you haven't lost everything.

Not for a while. My brother has a place in OC but he irritates the fuck out of me (imagine that) so I give it a wide berth even though I love the ocean. I'm sure you're correct on how it's changed. I grew up in Laurel when it was a sleepy little racetrack town and the place had already gone down the shitter from urban sprawl by the time I left; so the Eastern Shore changing was only a matter of time.

LOL, I do have my preferences set to 80 for that program on interstates and that trip is almost ALL interstate. May need to adjust that for I-95 though, especially in the Summer. I-95 now is so crowed you are lucky if you can maintain 65. I'll go back and recalculate.

However, the last long trip I made using that program was from here to Casstown, OH. It calculated 10 hours. That is exactly what it wound up taking us.

I live near Baltimore and the only reason that Maryland exists is because the state suckles at the tit of the Federal Government. The DC suburbs, enough said but the largest employer in the Baltimore area is the Social Security administration. Couple that with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on the same street and there's a huge portion of the employment in Baltimore. Aberdeen roving Ground in the Northeast part of the state and the giant Fort Meade (NSA) in the Center of the state and there you have the entire economy of MD.

I doubt that "skipping taxes" story, anyway. They're saying he saved $67 million in taxes ... his stock is worth north of $3.5 BILLION. I think the reason was much more complicated and people are looking for a simple answer.
But, like I said, he was never really an American citizen, anyway. The law starts as such:

But ... then again, we won't even defend - or even try to get a ruling - on the natural born citizen part of the Constitution. It's all a mess because we don't enforce our own laws and think that there is no effect from it. There is. And Schumer might well get his way and they'll be coming for us and everything we might have next. Leftists started talking about this when people talked about going Galt when Barky first slimed into office. They think they own us and everything. That's why they always talk about "health care costs US ..." - I pay for my own health insurance and health care but my expenses get spoken about by leftists as if they are paying for me.

On the iphone, only a few options come up when you click "share" from your camera. To text a photo, you have to exit out of the camera and go to the messages app and attach the photo there. WTF?

The big problem with inheritance taxes is that the heirs don't always have the cash to pay the taxes when they inherit land (farms) or businesses and that forces them to liquidate. I have a good friend who lives in LA. She works for the LA County school system and thus has very very good health insurance indeed. About a year and a half ago or so, she and her husband had a Blessed Event. Unfortunately, this happened about 7 weeks early. Their little boy is doing fantastic now, but he was in NICU for several weeks. Even with great insurance, they got nailed by a hefty set of co-pays, etc. Her husband lost his job two weeks before the baby was born and they ended up having to short sell on their condo and move in with her mother in law. She asked me, in all seriousness, if it was worth it for them to renounce citizenship. Why? Because 90+% of the fellow parents with kids in NICU were using Medi-Cal and it was extremely unlikely that most of them were in California legally. It made her furious to know that she was diligently trying to make payment arrangements and trying to sell her home to pay when those around her who were there illegally wouldn't face a dime of consequences.
At one point I went through all the various public programs for which she would qualify if she was a single mother with no job and it was far better for her economically to quit her job and get divorced rather than stay married and working. There's seriously a perverse set of incentives out there.

Why do we care about spelling and punctuation? Spelling really is taken care of by spell-check, by and large. And, if I really need to spell something that isn't already in my dictionary, I can always go to m-w.com and find it.
As for punctuation: punctuation serves the purpose of dividing our sentences for readability and phrasing. The rules we were taught in school are antiquated and, to today's generation, nonsensical. If you're not going to have a job in PR, print-journalism, or some publishing heavy field (science, academia), knowing the "formal" punctuation rules is completely unnecessary.
While I don't like blocks of text with no punctuation in them, that's because they're unreadable, not because the "abuse of the language" offends me.

And Florida offers tremendous diversity: There's something for everyone here. The difference between the northern, southern, eastern, and western parts of the state are rather distinct. You can find beachy communities, rural expanses, large cities, pretty much anything you would seek could be found here. Heck, as flat is Florida is, even the I-75 corridor has beautiful rolling hills.

Because literacy is the foundation of civilized society. As silly as it might seem, learning the rules of spelling and grammar are important. Spell check is not something anyone should rely on. Punctuation isn't tough. If they can't learn that, they're idiots who are not up to high school level. People passed these tests before. They aren't hard.
The advent of the handheld calculator didn't remove the need for people to know how to do arithmetic in their head or on paper.

Why do we care about spelling and punctuation? Spelling really is taken care of by spell-check, by and large. And, if I really need to spell something that isn't already in my dictionary, I can always go to m-w.com and find it.
As for punctuation: punctuation serves the purpose of dividing our sentences for readability and phrasing. The rules we were taught in school are antiquated and, to today's generation, nonsensical.

Spelling and punctuation are important. It's not simply knowing how to spell words, it's knowing which variant of that word is appropriate for your usage. See re: their there losing loosing past passed, etc. Knowing the rules for a language is invaluable for understanding how that language functions. Also, there are times when spell check is not available (see re: this blog depending on which browser you use). It matters.

Yeah, the thing is, we just made up all those rules, and there are several variations throughout the world. Indeed, at least some of the rules of English come from Latinate/Romance languages and really have no bearing on the largely Germanic roots of English. For instance: not splitting an infinitive. Northeast Florida is the ticket. We see a change of seasons here, but you can't expect to see a lot of snow. That only happens, in measurable quantity, about once every ten years.
NEFL is pretty reliably conservative (despite our new Dem mayor), property taxes aren't bad, and you can live at the beach, on a farm, or in a condo on the river in downtown Jacksonville. Houses prices are really depressed right now and you can pick up a steal. If you have kids, Jax is home to some of the best private schools in the country and even a few of our public schools make top grades.

The point is that a lack of literacy results in an inability to communicate with clarity. If I must decipher what it is that you are saying, then you are not communicating well, if at all. Certainly someone who is illiterate may be able to communicate, but it is highly likely that person cannot communicate his/her thoughts as well as someone who is literate. The limits of language are the limits of knowledge.
I think, perhaps, you may be arguing for a more robust development of language as opposed to rejecting the importance of spelling and punctuation. Languages are dynamic. Something written in the 1700's is very different from the 1800's which is very different from 1902 which is very different from 1982 which is very different from 2012. It appears that Moore's Law affects more than simply computing power.

I have to disagree. Oral societies are primitive and stay that way.
To the rest, English is a unique language and much of that uniqueness forces the exceptions that we all have to remember. English is unlike any other language that I have ever seen. We concentrate in English on the time description of an event or action and have pulled verbs and subjects apart to do that ((our verbs aren't really conjugated but are formed by combinations of structural forms, unlike pretty much all the other languages spoken). Because of that, we have a more open and flexible language that has many phrases and notions that are not even possible to express in other languages. There is a price for that - exceptions that must be remembered. Some is the spelling of words that drifted in from other languages. Some is from the unique development in English.
I consider it important to know the basic rules of the language (even as they do change over time) the same way that people STILL have to learn long division. Those who don't end up saying really stupid things such as "profits AND earnings ratios". Sure, such a retard can become President, but is that low of a measure what we want our kids to aspire to?

I don't need to know how to find sine, cosine, and tangent to write and follow a basic budget. Similarly, I don't need to know the difference between past tense and past perfect tense to get through daily life.
Which is not to say that they're bad things to know, or even just that they're not good things to know. But I'm really not getting why we should despair for the Republic because the new generation has figured out they can operate just fine in the world without knowing those things.

I've always said that I do, in fact, have a litmus test for judges. Can you pass an eighth grade grammar test? Some of the worst writing I've ever read has come for judges and other lawyers. It takes a minimum of 20 years of education to be a lawyer in the US. Please to be knowing the difference between loosing a case and losing a case. I mean, I'm all for loosing Kraken v. Universe but I think that might not be what you meant.

I believe that what started this discussion was a failure of 2/3 of children in a school system to be able to pass a test on basic spelling and grammar. The whole word movement and the alternate spelling movement and various other educational fads are causing a generation of children to be unable to think. If you cannot express clearly what you mean, then you cannot communicate. Let's take your Wal-Mart checker. If she doesn't understand basic grammar, it's highly likely that s/he will not be able to understand why I'm furious that s/he just triple charged me for something or that s/he did not give me the right rebate form or myriad other issues. It's about being able to function at something other than a grunt and point level.

But seriously, if you have $1 million in assets (including life insurance; or say, 1000 acres of land) you are a damned fool if you haven't done any estate tax planning--estate taxes are entirely voluntary and only hits those who don't plan.
There are some pretty cool ways to "sell" your business to your kids with virtually no income or estate tax consequences.
Or do like the rich liberals and set up a "charity" that has to hire your kids for life.
Get your ass to an estate planning lawyer and count your blessings that you can pay $5k to $20k+ to a private individual and not give hundreds of thousands later to the government.

I was speaking more about the structural aspects. We don't conjugate verbs, really. Only "to be" retains the full range - all special cases, too. For the rest of the verbs, we have 3 basic forms (4 for many, but not all) and use the structure to define the actual meaning. We use helping verbs and other elements to create time-delineated environments within which the subject and verb are precisely placed. Most other languages (that I am aware of) have the subject and verb all bundled up together and have little emphasis on the time factor. It's a totally different way of thinking.
Just my experience, and I am most definitely not a language maven, but I have been amazed by this incredible difference in the thought process that constructs an English sentence and I think it is a good part of what distinguishes English-speaking societies. I never read Churchill's book but I always assumed that this was his part of his point.

I'm not talking about the King's English per se, I'm talking about the ability to express yourself clearly and unambiguously to a given target audience. If you can't do that on paper or in speech, then the mental process has to be fuzzy.
For verbal skills, most people's brains think in whatever their native language is.
I've never seen a confused/stupid person who had the ability to emit crisp/clear verbal or written communications.

Amen. I almost got into a shouting match with my BIL when he said he doesn't need to know how to spell correctly. "Spell-check will take care of it." He's a great guy, but his writing skills are what you'd get if you fed crack to a third-grader and told him to conjugate a sentence by James Joyce.

An infinitive in French/Italian/Spanish is one word. In English it's two: "to be," "to go," "to run."
We do this because we don't really have "verbs" in English. We just have words which are interpreted as verbs when in the correct context, using prepositions to help define the function of the word as a verb. You have to say "to run" because "run" by itself is ill-defined. It can be a verb or a noun, but is nothing known until a preposition exists to define it or another word is attached to it that is a verb or adjective in that context, making "run" the noun. "Run free" versus "Good run", etc. (As you can see, I do not follow the official rules for punctuation with quotes - which are stupid - but I do it correctly on tests)
This is what I was driving at before. It is an exceedingly flexible and powerful method of construction but also requires extra-precision in its use to be coherent. This need for precision is the gap that leftists love to jump in and exploit, and the only defense against that abuse of the language is a knowledgeable population. Knowledgeable in the particulars and the exceptions.

Pick any word. Put a "the" in front of it and it's a noun. It doesn't matter how a word originally came into English, it can be made into any form you want through the structure of the sentence. Generally we use prepositions for the work but I just spit out some quick examples involving only a noun and a verb. That is one of the most powerful features of English, in addition to our concentration on the time-delineation of the action or event.

The structural words are generally exempt from this (the prepositions, structural "verbs" - be/have/do) though people like to violate this general rule to make their English sound "edgy".
