The bomber first murdered his wife by beating her to death, then set his barn on fire.  When the fire department responded he blew up the school. There were three separate explosions used. A fourth was planned but not used.

It's very difficult to get the IPO.  If you manged to get that, if you are that much of a big player, it seems you are in a good spot to maybe make some money.   Jim Cramer on CNBC did an analysis of past IPO behavior and it is very eye opening.   (This is not investment advice by any means, just an opinion of a poster on a website)

I lived next door to one of them in South Philly. She and husband were both retired, he sat at his front window all day, smoking. If I remember correctly, google was a dutch auction so you had to get the email and then click through and even then, you weren't guaranteed shares.  I know people who bought it on the way up.  When they have no splits, it's not accessible to everyone.  You end up owning the couple of shares you can afford and risking a lot if somehow the company tanks.

I went to see the Avengers at 9:20 last night. It's a 2 hour and 22 minute movie.

It wasn't bad, but I don't think it was great either. I'm surprised at what high rating it got. I guess people's expectations were low and they were pleasantly surprised.

I'm not sure it's worth seeing in theaters, but I enjoyed it.  It is long though. I did check my watch once or twice.

I probably didn't fall asleep until 1 or 2. So I'm burned out as well.

Last night Savage was calling romney the "manchurian non candidate" cause he is behaving like McCain and not fighting back.  He ranted about it for 15 minutes after he read the ABC copy off the news feed saying that the literary agent made a mistake as an intern and now as a principle sees her mistake.  He deemed it a non issue and over.   I wonder if he'll be right or if there is more to it from breitbart's people.

Our home mortgage is through GMAC. Just got the "We are going bankrupt, but you need to keep making your payments to us letter".
Question....is GMAC tied into GM, and if so, how does their failure reflect on the claim that GM has bounced back from the grave?

I can help you out.  Yes, GMAC Mortgage a/k/a ResCap was tied to GM, but isn't now.  It is a subsidiary of what is now called Ally Bank and used to be GMAC.  Ally is now 65% owned by the taxpayers, as a result of TARP, not directly because of the GM bailout.  GMAC was and still is a major auto loan provider and, most importantly, it finances dealer loans which enable GM dealers to buy their cars and build out their lots and showrooms.  It used to be a finance company, which was regulated by the states. 

 

GM owned all of GMAC until 2006.  In 2006 it sold a 51% controlling interest to Cerberus Capital, a Wall Street private equity fund.  Almost immediately the mortgage market went to hell and ResCap started hemorrhaging money.  ResCap was formed in 2005 by combining two separate mortgage companies that GM owned - GMAC Mortgage, a prime lender, and Residential Finance Corp. (RFC) a major subprime lender.  Right after the sale to Cerberus the subprime market started freezing and ResCap was left holding a shitload of bad subprime paper that it could not sell nor could it even value it on its books.  It lost about $3 billion from 2007-2011 and shed about 75% of its workforce..

 

When the financial meltdown happened in 2008, GMAC was on life support.  The Bush Administration was concerned that a failure of GMAC would further cripple GM because its dealers would lose their primary source of financing.  GMAC was quietly granted an emergency bank charter in December of 2008 and became a federally-regulated bank so that it could receive TARP funding.  (this happend at about the same time that Goldman Sachs and Mortan Stanley also became banks in order to get TARP loans and access to the Fed winow for cheap funding.)  At that time GM and Cerberus had to give up their shares in GMAC because neither met the qualifications to own a federally-chartered bank.  The federal government essentially took over their shares of GMAC.  The new bank rebranded itself as Ally Bank and became a full-service bank, taking deposits and selling CDs.  This part of the company has been profitable, but the TARP repayments have been a serious drag on its profits.  Ally now provides dealer financing to dealers of all brands of cars and auto loans/leases for all brands.  It has no ties to GM. 

 

ResCap has continued to hemorrhage money and has a huge backlog of foreclosures from its old RFC portfolio of subprime loans.  Ally Bank wants to do an IPO so it can raise the capital to pay off the rest of its TARP loans and get out from government control.  But it was unable to do that as long as ResCap was dragging its balance sheet down.  So it finally decided to put ResCap into bankruptcy and sell it off.  Ally insists that the company will not go out of business and existing employees will not lose their jobs. 

 

I also have a mortgage with GMAC and I got a similar letter.  They are going to sell the servicing portfolio, which is still worth a lot, so your loan and mine will be transferred to a new company.  This sould be seamless but there have been glitches in the past in similar situations, with payments being lost and people ending up in default.  My advice is to keep everything you get from them and watch your monthly statements.  I plan to start making my payments by check instead of online, just so I have a hard record of the payment and where it was sent.

Wrong.  Huge deal.  It makes a huge mess of the actuary tables.  And, since most people have group coverage, they'll be paying for it whether or not they use it.

If the insurance companies are allowed to charge the appropriate price for it, again, no problem.

But they won't be.  Remember that the kind of "pre-existing condition" that people want covered is Heart Disease, or Diabetes, or Cancer.  Remember also, that (per HIPAA, which has been around since '96) insurance policies already have to cover pre-existing conditions as long as you've maintained health insurance coverage (so switching plans doesn't lose your coverage, while going uninsured for a while would mean your Diabetes is now a "pre-existing condition.").

The only thing the "pre-existing conditions" thing will do is force insurers to cover people with very, very expensive conditions.  Now, it is possible to charge enough to cover the expenses, but that's more costly than just handling the medical bills yourself would be.

So one of two things (and possibly both) will happen: 1) to lower the costs for the pre-ex participants, the insurance companies will raise everyone else's rates.  2) Congress will pass a law saying that insurance companies can't charge you differently (or can't charge more than X% more) if you have a pre-existing condition (which brings us back to point 1).

More than anything else, the Pre-Existing Condition part of ObamaCare is what will cause the death of private insurance.

When you look at the cost difference between Employee + Spouse (or Employee + Domestic Partner) and Employee + Family, you see that the people who are most likely to keep their kids on their insurance are the same ones who really love the pre-existing condition stuff.

And if it were only mandated for individual insurance, that would be fine.  It's not; it affects group coverage, too.  And the group (that is: your employer) pays an "average rate" based on several assumptions (I was never one of the actuary guys).  Forcing group coverage to extend "dependent" coverage to people who should be out of college and already making their own way (I'm sorry, 8 years is plenty of time to get started), messes with those actuary tables.

Don't get me wrong- it may not hurt your premiums (though it probably would), but it would certainly hurt the insurance company's ability to price their products accurately.

I think there needs to be clarity about what constitutes a pre-existing condition.  For example, my old firm was once involved in vicious litigation with a health insurance company who claimed that a tumor that was not diagnosed until after coverage began was actually pre-existing since due to the size and type of the tumor, it had been present prior to coverage.  It's those kinds of fights that make people think the insurance company is out to screw them over.

That being said, I am not horribly sympathetic to the whole but but it's awful that insurance doesn't cover pre-existing conditions thing and I say that as someone who has a serious thyroid disorder.  I know full well that if I don't keep coverage than treatement for that won't be covered either at all or possibly until a year later.  Okay.  Fine.  That's on me then.  Health insurance is not a charity.  These attempts to make it so set my teeth on edge.

I agree.  The problem is that such things are hard to define.  The Texas Health Insurance Risk Pool (for which I worked via BCBSTX) continually had to re-tool their "possibly pre-existing diagnosis" list.

Our general rule of thumb was that if it wasn't diagnosed prior to the coverage, it wasn't pre-existing.  But that could change depending on specific diagnosis and a review of medical records (we could request up to 6 months prior).

Just because your doctor doesn't SAY you have Heart Disease doesn't make your Heart Disease not-pre-existing.  If they were giving you treatment for Heart Disease (under some other dx- illegal, but the gov't normally looks the other way), or if they cautioned you that you might/probably had it, and you just chose not to get the necessary tests, for instance.

Believe me, I know.

THIRP, specifically, never really had a problem with it.  We tried to err on the side of "not a pre-existing condition" since we were established specifically to help people who couldn't qualify for insurance otherwise.

But I know the problem from both sides, so I understand why people have a problem.

And it certainly doesn't help that there really are plans out that there that still practice the "deny first, then actually consider it on appeal" model.

Ironically, it's the "prompt pay" laws that make that as profligate as it is: since insurance companies in most states only have 15 days to pay or deny, they'll fire off some minor request for records (often redundant, but not exactly useless either- just enough to ride the line), and then "deny- waiting for medical records."

What it actually does is gives them more than 15 days to really consider the claim- which is sometimes necessary, but the law (as written) doesn't take that into account- so insurance companies have found ways around the law.

Is it any surprise that even the relatively benign BlueCross BlueShield of Texas has a veritable Army of lawyers?  As in- more than 100, at one point.

If the assumptions made in their business model (based on actuarial tables) get too broken, the insurance company will not be able to function. So it's not really about making them "happy" or how big their profit it is, but whether they can exist. That said, to me the thing that is more of a concern -- or of equal concern, at least -- re US health care is access. No one seems to be addressing that. The lag time in getting these various "congratulations you've turned fifty here are a bunch of tests you need to take" scheduled has been ridiculous and the way that the results are being communicated, and how the appts are being scheduled, is simply insane. The point is that if you really mess with the basic assumptions a business must make to stay in business, you will eventually run them out of business.  That is the specific goal of ObamaCare (remember: it's a "stepping stone" to Single Payer).  There are three provisions, more than any others, that will make that happen:  Shall Issue, Shall Cover (the pre-existing thing), and the dependent coverage mandate.

All three of those mess with how insurance companies in general (not "an insurance company" the whole industry) do business.  Ultimately, if not struck, any one of them will lead to the insurance industry collapsing (some faster than others).  And do you really think, honestly, that they'll just be allowed to collapse, or do you instead think they'll either be nationalized (so the Government can claim we don't have single payer), or just be rolled into one National Health Insurance Corporation (or similar)?

I don't care if Aetna is too stupid to make a profit.  I do care if the rules of the game are rigged so that no one can make a profit.

But Finch mentioned in a flashback that the machine is able to patch itself, re-write itself, monitor itself.  Isn't that self-aware?  It knew what Reese was asking and it was formulating a plan.  It even contacts him directly!  That was so friggin cool!

I also thought we would find out what really happened to Nathan Ingram (Finch's partner) and how Finch got his limp. Maybe he accidentally got hurt faking his death? Does that mean Nathan could have faked his death too?

You and I may have different definitions of "self-aware"; to me that means that it's capable of saying "Fuck this shit" at some point and being completely autonomous from either Finch or Reese.  Trusting Reese could be a function of currently existing database technology where he occupies a role where Finch put him that is constantly being monitored by feedback loops to either confirm his status or put him somewhere else.  This is just a guess but I'm thinking that Finch put it right on the edge of being self-aware but having either a back-door control that he hasn't told anybody about or sticking in a poison pill line of code whereby he can disable it if it turns on him.

You've paid way more attention to the characters in it than I have (is there a chat somewhere about this that you're part of?) because you're using some names that I don't recognize.  Is Stanton his former partner who was supposed to kill him in China (along with him doing that to her)?  I fully expected her to show up at some point last night too.  I love that they brought back "Teh Fixer" last night (and that leg shot when she was talking to Reese just about made me blow a load) because she's a very cool character.  I love how they jump through time in the course of the show but if you're distracted for a minute it can get very confusing.  For that reason I'll probably watch the reruns if they're on.

It's ambiguous where the writers left it at the very end of the finale, as to whether or not the machine was 'thinking' how to recover Finch.  Over the course of the season, Finch and Nathan kept dropping hints as to just how powerful and omnipresent the machine really is.  Finch most likely built the machine to accept only him and Nathan as special "persons of interest" that supercede any code that can identify them to anyone else in the government.  How else could he be hiding in plain sight all this time?  He erased himself out of existence and the machine is helping him cover it up.    All this can be explained by Finch's coding to identify terrorism and criminals, but after the ending of last night's show I'm starting to wonder just how really smart the machine is.  What on earth did the machine say to Reese on the phone?  Can it verbalize its thoughts?  If so, then I say yes it is self-aware.  I guess we'll find out next season just how far advanced it is and what truly happened to Nathan.  He was the one that added in the contingency code that could kill the machine.  Is the machine aware of this?  Could the machine have killed Nathan this way?  If so, is the machine going to kill Finch or keep him in the dark about what Nathan did behind his back?

Cara Stanton was his female partner that was with him in Ordos where they both had orders to kill each other.  Snow betrayed them both.  He was the one that Stanton shot in her hotel room after coming back from the dead.  Snow is probably dead or being worked like a wet towel by Stanton as to WTF is going on.

And yeah, that leg shot of Zoe made me about have a sudden flash flood in my pants!  I still have the episode of her first appearance (in HD) on my computer so I can watch her step out of the limo after she wiggled into that tight dress in the back seat.  I figure Zoe will be a recurring character since she's appeared 3 times now.

And finally Fusco and Carter are now on the same page.  It's awesome.  I wonder how much longer Simmons (the corrupt HR cop) is going to last now that Fusco has turned the tables on them.  I saw the FBI captured the one cop who was the mole.  Did they round up the others?

I mainly cruise the IMDB forum for this show and pick up bits there.
