13 BB looks at polling.  Good article here and stuff for people to keep in mind as you view these polls.  There is one problem though.  They still place too much emphasis on “independents”.   Yes there are a LOT of independents.  Technically everybody in SC is an independent and there are no Republicans or Democrats.  That is because when you register to vote in SC you do not register by Party.  But, like all States whether you register by Party or not, the people are overwhelmingly aligned to one Party or the other.

One of the key political advisors to the Republicans which ace blogged about several weeks ago says that the number of actual flip-flopping independents is only around 7%.  I think it is even lower.  My gut and experience tells me that it is less than 5% and what generally happens is outcomes are changed by who is able to generate enthusiasm in getting their people down to vote.  IOW for 2012 purposes, donÂ’t expect a significant number of dissatisfied Obama voters to  vote for Romney.  It just ainÂ’t going to happen.  What you can reasonably expect is a significant fraction of Obama voters deciding to stay at home, particularly if weather is bad or something else makes it harder to vote.

The other big thing that BB guy neglects in this poll discussion is the type of poll.  We do not vote for President in a nationwide vote, therefore nationwide polls for President have little meaning. The key is State by State polls, and most especially, the key swing States where the vote is always close.

Here in the Magnolia State it's all over the news about the French Consulate presenting a local WWII vet with the Legion d'honneur for participating in the liberation of France. Apart from how cool and touching it was to see that (the ceremony took place before the congregation of the little Northeast Mississippi church the vet attends), it was also of note because the French had originally intended to hand out a whole bunch of these to les Americains, and the process got snagged up with the end of the war and folks more interested in returning home than collecting decorations.

Even though it's a bit late in the game, they're trying to rectify this, so if any of you know a vet who served in France from D-Day onwards through VE Day, it could be worthwhile to contact your nearest Frog Consulate or Embassy and see if they qualify. It's a recognition these guys richly merit, and would likely mean quite a bit to them and their families.  Currently, it's estimated that more than 15,000 American WWII vets are eligible for the Legion d'honneur who haven't yet received the decoration.

There was a march that had permits.. it was some vet group that wanted to protest NATO and throw their medals over a fence.. meh.. assholes.. but they stuck to their permit timeline and dispersed when the rally was over.  So, yeah, it was mostly peaceful.

Then, the other libtard fucks that have been here all weekend decided not to disperse.  It was so funny.. there were like 1000 cops (state and city) against some 200 dopes.  So the cops just formed a line and started moving them with their riot batons.. a few got whacked in the process.

The cops have not been arresting hardly anyone.. I think only about 20 all weekend.. Their restraint is saintly..

Not a headline, but it ought to be - more than 15,000 surviving American veterans of World War II who took part in the liberation of France have yet to be awarded the Legion d'honneur they earned for their bravery and sacrifice in that struggle.  The French government is making an effort to right this wrong, and is asking that anyone knowing an eligible vet contact their Embassy or one of their many Consulates.

 

This could really mean a lot to these guys, and it's an honor that they richly deserve.  Just thought it worth mentioning in case anyone knows a WWII vet who would qualify - as I understand it, any service in France during the Liberation would count, from D-Day on through the march into Paris.

You've got a definite point there, and there is no question that whoever came up with the phrase "Perfidious Albion" should have been looking at the other side of the Channel instead.  (Not to say that the Brits haven't done their share of conduct unbecoming with us, but in a weird way it's sort of an inter-familial conflict with us and them.)

 

I was motivated in part because I witnessed news coverage of one of these ceremonies here in Mississippi and it was very touching to watch - the veteran was there with his family (three generations present) and he seemed to take it as thanks and recognition for his service, and an acknowledgement of the debt owed to those he served with who paid the ultimate price.  I think it well could be that many vets might see it the same way, and even if they didn't, they at least deserve the option to have the decoration made available to them and be able to choose how they would prefer to respond.

Oh man, I had to drop something off for work once and when I pulled up to the house I saw the blue star flag. I called the office and asked if the people knew I was coming. Hey morons. Last night I saw the first TV ad from Crossroads GPS. It was damn good. Shows a few of Obama's 2008 campaign promises, in his own words, then how he has broken them. Wounded warriors treated at Walter Reed can sometimes be assigned there for one to four years. While they are in top facilities, at the end of the day, they are still living in military apartments and medical clinics. This will give them the chance to get out of the city,” Falke said. The $10 million project, set to open in May 2013, will include a central clubhouse, family cabins, a fishing pond, wheelchair-accessible trails and gardens. I like to talk about the fact that education grads have the worst average GRE scores of everyone - they even do worse on the math sections than the English grads - but this chick was so far beyond that it was incredible.  And she surely didn't go to grad school so those poor education GREs don't even include the brain-dead people like her.

ATC, my nephew graduated two years ago with a degree in Actuarial Sciences (or some such. Something to do with actuary.) Complex, math-heavy major that required taking tests to be certified. He got a 6-month internship after graduating and passing the big test for them. After that, nothing. He now tosses newspapers and works in a restaurant. My understanding is that this is not at all atypical.

Those stats aren't just current either.  They go all the way back to the 1920s.  (Yes I know SATs and GREs weren't around then, but other metrics were.)  Eduction majors as a group are the bottom of the intellectual barrel no matter what metric you pick.

Key point to remember:  in even the highest turnout elections, some 35-40% do not vote.  In the lowest, 45-50% don't vote.    Why?  Who knows?   But you see there is as much of a 15% swing in total voters there.

But it makes sense that marginal voters will be less inclined to come out if (a) times are good, and (b) there's not much contrast in the candidates.  Those factors are NOT  here now. 

Even the smartest pollsters can't really predict how people will turn out.  But  I'd say the stars are aligned for a great surge of "new voters" for Romney.  And the left won't know what hit 'em.

This is so true about the Education cohort (both GRE scores and across the academic performance spectrum as well) - I can't count the number of times in Academia that I've heard so-and-so dismissed as an "Ed Major."

 

And if you really want to get people from various academic persuasions united on one topic, get them to weigh in on the rigor and relative value of an "Ed.d." degree.

I *know* the Castle series was 1954, that being a key point I was making in the very first sentence of my posting.  The point was, if the original posting was denoting the first airdrop of a hydrogen bomb, it was quite thoroughly buried in the rest of the text, which incorrectly ascribes the uninhabitability of the islands to that particular test and places the Cherokee event essentially on top of Bravo.
