Happy Tuesday, 'rons.

After a failed attempt in August 2008, SpaceX finally succeeded at launching the ashes of James Doohan and 306 others into orbit this morning. SpaceX is trying to make it as a contractor for NASA, but it's also making a little cash on the side---about $1 million for 306 folks' ashes.

By about 2-1, Americans say their financial situation is worse under Obama. Sadly, Americans also still blame Bush 43 over Obama by 49-34 percent for the current economy. *As is usual practice for an ABC/WaPo poll, they haven't listed the partisan breakdown of the poll.

2 I can't believe how many reporters at the press conference asked about the canister of ashes. Clearly that's the biggest story about this mission.

5 Seriously, this is an historic day. During the press conference, Elon Musk made a good comparison between space and the explosive growth of the internet in the 1990s. The internet was created by government, but only took off when private industry got involved.

10 Early radio report on BBC was about a tax revolt in Ireland.   I haven't seen much on Ireland in the news,  since everyone has been talking about Greece.

Irish government has passed a "household tax"  which is about $200 per year.  People don't want to pay it because it requires giving the government all sorts of information about their property. So far about half of the population has refused to pay it.

Interviews with Irish people included a guy who sounded like a tea party ype,  a woman who said she wasn't paying any more money just because the Germans said so,  and another woman who said she would go to prison before she paid it.

11 Morning kids. I've been hearing rumblings of some sort of rapprochement between Mitt and Newt, with the goal of Newt being VP. Has anyone else heard this, or is Newt just blowing smoke up Hannity's ass?

13 #11  There is no way Newt will be the VP pick.

I also heard this morning that Newt is quoted as saying he was really surprised that Obama is attacking Mitt on Bain capital.

The hypocrisy of that statement is jaw-dropping.

15 Watch the INCREDIBLE, pure science-fiction-come-to-life updates on the SpaceX mission here: http://spaceflightnow.com/falcon9/003/status.html

Things like:

Elon Musk just tweeted: "Dragon spaceship opens the navigation pod bay door without hesitation. So much nicer than HAL9000 "

Elon Musk just tweeted: "Navigation bay pointing to deep space and star map being generated by star tracker one. Yes!"

"We've never actually had solar arrays deploy in space, so it's the first time we've done solar arrays. A number of things could have gone wrong, but everything went right."

How can a former physics major PULL THIS STUFF OFF?  Damn!

18 The poll results shouldn't surprise anyone.  Most or all of the 49% voted for Obama.  If they believed Obama to be mostly at fault, they would be admitting they were idiots to vote for him in 2008.  People aren't going to do that, which is why Nov 2012 makes me nervous.

35 #18  This is why the line needs to be "The media didn't tell you the truth and Obama hid his true intentions."

That way it becomes someone else's fault,  and then they don't have to feel so stupid.  I am speaking as a former democrat,  so I know what I am talking about.

Whenever people start in about the Catholics and Obamacare,  I just ask them to explain why Muslims get an exemption and Catholics do not.  That sends them into a tailspin. I always point out that the media isn't covering that detail.

43 Short of shoving the barrel of a 1911 up his left nostril, why has no one tried to sue Kimberlin for intentional infliction of emotional distress, or slander, libel, tortious interference with a business or something.  Dude is backed by Soros and Streisand, so he must have some assets in the bank, he is not going to come across well with a jury, and it would distract him to have a few law suits going on around the country.

On the other hand, the 1911 also works.

I did not realize he had been released,  but apparently he has served his time.  Why he is not in violation of some sort of law for what he has been doing,  I do not know.   I am from the Indianapolis area and well remember the fear his bombings caused (as well as the injuries and the probable murder of a cop,  which was never proved).

The DOJ will never go after him as long as Obama is in the White House.  McCain needs to go to a state which has an active, conservative attorney general who would prosecute.

He was near the American Embassy when the VC attacked and breached the embassy wall. They made it less than 10 feet before Marines killed the assholes. Hearing Cronkite's assessment you would have thought that the invaders had over run the place. Douglas Brinkley has written a new biography of Cronkite which addresses his strong left bias. 96 From a column by Wes Pruden in the Washington Times (I thought was amusing):
Young Barack’s best pal just after he left Harvard Yard was a Pakistani, and if young Barack nursed ambitions to one day run for president of the United States, he probably didn’t know that the Constitution requires the president to be a “natural-born” citizen. He was a graduate of Harvard Law, after all, and it’s unfair to assume that he had been exposed to the Constitution by his professors there. For whatever reason, he did not correct his agent’s literary confection and as late as 2007 his biographical sketch still boasted of a Kenyan birth.

I think Spencer is a Christian himself. I can't recall ever reading that he denied the historicity of Jesus, though I may have missed it. However, his Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam and the Crusades does betray a tendency to cherry-pick information and make invalid comparisons which does make him a poor scholar at times.

"Why Invent Mohammed?" By Goldman

[conclusion:]

Why is theological clarity so important?

For several reasons.

First, the question of what Islam seeks to accomplish is of first importance. The definitive claim of the religion, if we follow Prof. Kalisch, is the Election of the Arabs to replace the Jews. Any manifest sign of Jewish election (for example, a Jewish state in Eretz Yisrael) challenges the founding premise of Islam and constitutes an existential threat to the religion itself.

Second, the mechanism by which the new religion recasts the figures of Moses and Jesus is Gnostic, that is, the belief that an esoteric knowledge enables the adepts to see past the surface: underneath the Hebrew Bible and Christian Gospels lies the “true” revelation of  Islam. But that is not a revelation at all, not, at least, in the sense that the giving of the Torah or the ministry of Jesus were understood to be revelations, namely, a human engagement with an infinite God. There really is no revelation at all, because Allah always remains infinitely remote and unrevealed: there is merely Gnosis, a new esoteric knowledge, a re-reading of earlier sources that transforms Moses and Jesus into Mohammed.

This makes Islam far more fragile than Judaism or Christianity. If the West chose to exploit its fragility rather than attempt to appease, engage, or reform Islam, the outcome would surprise everyone.

Much as you would with leftards, a simple examination of the  goals of islam is all that's needed. Just simple quotes. Look at the societies that have embraced it, how are they doing compared to Christian nations like ours.  Tally up a list of accomplishments for both, it's just a tad one-sided.

There is absolutely nothing in islam that makes you a better person. It is the exact polar-opposite of Christianity.

165 Another bullshit ABC/WaPo poll out today, this time with only 22% Republicans in the sample. Bear in mind that even in 2008 the electorate was 32% Republican, in 2010 Dems and Reps tied at 35%. And even with a ridiculously small Republican sample, SCOAMF is within the margin of error ahead of Romney 49-46. Oh no, they're not deliberately skewing these polls to make Obama look good or anything. Either that or Republicans are en masse refusing to answer polls from these assholes. Details at HotAir.

168 Josephus live decades after the death of Jesus.

Yes, he did.  He was also a court historian who did very thorough research.  In the height of the "The New Testament was written as much as 200 years after Jesus' Death" craze, some people believed that Josephus wrote the books of Luke and Acts.  No one to take seriously, mind you, but still.

I don't have my index of stuff here, but I guess I can go dig it up if you want.  The point is we don't actually have very many documents at all which definitively refer to Julius Caesar (from contemporary sources, of course), but we don't doubt that he existed.

[From Live Doppler (quoted) and others. If this was previously referenced at AoSHQ, read it again.]
"In a letter to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, Jr., 50 NASA scientists, astronauts, and engineers are speaking out against man-made global warming alarmism.  NASA has pushed a pro-global warming agenda for years, perhaps because of money.  According to the NASA website, “In 2004, NASAÂ’s spending on climate science exceeded all other Federal agencies, combined.  NASA spent $1.3 billion on climate science that year, out of a $1.9 billion total.”  A good way to keep the money flowing over the years is to keep publishing reports that man is causing catastrophic damage."
"Dear Charlie [Mooselum Outreach Bolden, ed.],

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that NASA and the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) refrain from including unproven remarks in public releases and websites. We believe the claims by NASA and GISS, that man-made carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated, especially when considering thousands of years of empirical data. With hundreds of well-known climate scientists and tens of thousands of other scientists publicly declaring their disbelief in the catastrophic forecasts, coming particularly from the GISS leadership, it is clear that the science is NOT settled.

181 Pope John Paul II wrote that for all the most beautiful verbal attributes Islam references God/Allah, Islam allows NO PERSONAL MUTUAL RELATIONSHIP linking Allah with people, no atonement, absolutely "no Emmanuel, God With Us". The Muslim God would remain the unknowable except for omnipotent god of "mercy" that amounts to perpetual vengeance. Basically, Muslims deny everyone the right to a personal relationship with God as our loving "Father" which would effectively unify humanity. The authentic Semitic religions from Moses and Jesus are distinct in attributing God's [jealous] love for God's chosen. Jesus' role was to cement LOVE and charity as humanity's responsibility, having introduced God as our "Father in Heaven".

It's a damned shame, to deprive the soul of love.

Jesus said that lacking faith to the point of denying Jesus and the Father can be forgiven BUT NOT DENYING THE SPIRIT.

"Mohammed" drinks Jesus' and Moses' milkshake.

Get your own straw.

Me too. From what I read, Commander Scott's ashes were in the  rocket's  second stage and will orbit Earth for about a year before reentry.

I still wonder why this couldn't have happened a long time ago. Killing the Shuttle with 75% percent of their useful flight time remaining was a bad thing, IMO, but if it generates the private space industry faster, then I'm all for it. It still sucks that we have to rely on the Russians for our access to space. That need not be.

185 I still like Winston Churchill's quotes about Islam. ...No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome. That quote alone could be reason enough for the JEF to return the Churchill bust that was in the White House.

Nothing like traumatizing an entire family on your way out.

An insurance adjuster for a company with whom my company did a fair amount of business committed suicide. She decided to do this by walking directly in front of a tractor trailer. There was no question it was intentional either, she left a note and there was video from a couple businesses along the street showing that she consciously stepped directly into the path of the truck.  You know, it's bad enough to destroy your own family by killing yourself, but she made someone else kill her.  That made me understanding the whole considering it a mortal sin thing.

Quote below from an article linked at Insty. Maybe it's "how he came to beat Hillary" but I have a slight suspicion that personality, or lack thereof, might have something to do with it.

>>Former Pensylvania Governor Ed Rendell said it would be unfair to compare ObamaÂ’s aides to ClintonÂ’s operation.

“You’re comparing them to the gold standard,” Rendell told BuzzFeed. “They’ve done a good job.”

He added, however, that he hasnÂ’t heard of officials getting Clinton-style calls from Obama at 11:30 at night to ask about local issues. That, said a former Clinton aide, is simply a product of how Obama rose to power.

“He’s not as engaged in building Democratic institutions in different states,” the consultant said. “If you think about how he came to beat Hillary and become president, he did not go through typical Democratic institutions — he ceded that to Hillary. Eventually some started to come his way. I don’t know if there’s as much of a reliance on building these operations state by state.”

238 Corey Booker story shining so bright is is overpowering any possible shiny objects.

Got a kick out of A.B. Stoddard's lefty spin on this last night on FNC Special Report.  She tooted the WH line that Romney knows nothing about job creation, having been engaged only in wealth creation, and that the JEF's experience as preezy far outshines Romney's when it comes to economic sense and job creation.

That is their line and they are sticking to it.  Their problem is that it does not sell.  Look at the slick ads both campaigns are running and decide.

I will never forget that completely unexpected and meaningful moment of sincere gratitude.

245 Forbes has up ...

7 Reasons Why Facebook IPO Was A Bust

But they missed the most obvious reason .. the P/E.

Companies like Apple(AAPL), Intel(INTC) and Microsoft(MFST) have a P/E of 13.86, 11.10 and 10.84, while Facebook (FB) has a P/E of 72.98 @32.02.  It had a P/E of 88 at the IPO offering price.

No investor in his right mind would buy anything (except perhaps a company proven to be able to convert lead to gold) with a P/E of 88.

"I could have sworn it had retractable landing gear. The whole idea was for the vehicle to be reusable."

Eventually the 1st and 2nd stages are to be recoverable by parachute like the Space Shuttle SRBs.   For now the capsule lands in water and is recovered by Spacex - saw some pictures of a previous recovery last night.  Eventually it will have the ability to land on land on landing gear like a flying saucer.

I loved watching the reaction of the Spacex TV babe after the capsule attained orbit.  I do recall hearing that she was an actual engineer, not just a spokesbabe.  She looks like a live one IYKWIMAITYD.

Damn, gun safety. You say a first grader (emotionally distraught) had open access?

Unlike adults and older children, kids in first grade are only just LEARNING responsibilities, and adjusting to school if they weren't raised in daycare.

Sad. True enough, it's not fair to make someone find your suicidal remains. But first graders don't really "get" what's fair to others being consumed with themselves at that age, just starting to "go figure".

There's a theory that to get over a trauma, forgiveness gets you over the worst. Harder done than said. Especially when it comes to forgiving yourself for perceived inadequacies to "cure" someone else's problems that lead to suicide.

328 not a suicide but I went out with a guy in HS who had saved his family from an armed, violent home invader with his father's gun when he was only 10 or so. he was a hero but . . . he killed the burglar. it really, really sort of messed him up, poor guy. he was just a kid! also I'm so terribly dubious about the whole SoS saga that I'm assuming our little gentle hummingbird is mostly "for fun." not an actual person. I could be wrong but at any rate that whole deal was quite the story, I'm sure mostly embellishment

332 "It's queer," she said; "I see the light
As plain as I beheld it then,
All silver-like and calm and bright-
We've not had stars like that again!

"And she was such a gentle thing
To birth a baby in the cold.
The barn was dark and frightening-
This new one's better than the old.

"I mind my eyes were full of tears,
For I was young, and quick distressed,
But she was less than me in years
That held a son against her breast.

"I never saw a sweeter child-
The little one, the darling one!-
I mind I told her, when he smiled
You'd know he was his mother's son.

"It's queer that I should see them so-
The time they came to Bethlehem
Was more than thirty years ago;
I've prayed that all is well with them."

351 Walking home from Kindergarten for lunch back in 1960, my next-door-neighbor's mother had committed suicide (hanging in a closet) shortly after giving birth (blues, not simply chemical imbalance, but ideological conflict of a Mormon mother married to a non-Mormon suffering unrealistic expectations from her own culture).  It was horribly frightening having to walk past the ambulance and police, and made a deep impact on us all. Life went on. Being children of the school district's superintendent (firm hand) definitely paved their way growing up, handled carefully with sympathy by the rest of the town. After a decade when the eldest was in high school and the youngest in 3rd grade, the dad remarried a Catholic. Ironically, she converted to Mormonism (to one-up his first wife?) at which point he decided not to lose another marital round and joined as well for the sake of family unity. A few years after having his baby, the second wife divorced him for another Mormon man.  The kids grew up popular, well adjusted socially and became aggressive successes professionally. The daughter made motherhood and homemaking her life after a newlywed year as a school teacher. When the dad finally remarried another decade later, their family's sad history with Mormonism was done, the children each having gone their own ways steering clear of that "forever" propaganda, settling in with Protestant spouses. One thing they learned from their first step-mother was that church is a club.

I have a great life, great adventures, husband, marriage, kids. But that is not something you get over. You get around it but not over it. I wish everyone who considered suicide would reconsider. Get out of your own head and consider other people. The people who love you, hell even those who just know you, will never be the same.

I have often thought that suicide is an incredibly hostile act:  I'm going to teach you a lesson you'll never forget.  I will concede that most people who kill themselves are not right in the head, but if there was ever proof that depression is anger turned inward, the hostility of suicide, when you finally turn it outward, is it.

370 Sometimes things inadvertently happen in your life to reset your priorities.  In the late 80s I was in a deadend job, my marriage was on the rocks and life seemed to suck.  Mrs H had on some John Stossel special which I wasn't paying attention to about people coming to the country.  I remembered hearing some street merchant in NYC from the Carribean talking about how great he thought he had it in this country and it was the greatest place in the world for him to have an opportunity to make a living.  That was like a cold slap in the face for me; figuring that if a guy like that could feel so positive about his lot in life there's no reason for a privileged shithead like me to ever feel bad about things.  I pretty much fixed everything that was wrong and, even if it hasn't been uninterrupted clear sailing, I've never felt sorry for myself.

375 "By about 2-1, Americans say their financial situation is worse under Obama. Sadly, Americans also still blame Bush 43 over Obama by 49-34 percent for the current economy. *As is usual practice for an ABC/WaPo poll, they haven't listed the partisan breakdown of the poll."

This is the fault of the republican party.  It's their responsibility.  Not romney's.  It would be unseemly for romney to criticize buxh.  If it is bush's fault, then accept responsibility.  If it isn't, then prove to the American people that it isn't.  Either way, the ever lazy republican party has its work cut out for it.  If they don't try to explain it, when the president gets up and says "I need another term to finish what I started, look at this, this was bush's fault, look at this, this was bush's fault and look at this, this was bush's fault too.  So America, you always give people a second chance, give me mine and I promise I'll fix this to your satisfaction.  I'll make sure that every American is helped and has opportunity, you'll see".....Americans are pretty nice people, there is a good chance this strategy will work, incumbents always have the edge, my dad says even carter looked like he was winning until the bitter end.  My dad has been saying that all these polls showing romney leading will creae a false sense of security for the republicans.  He thinks this is teh democratic strategy, to make BO seem like he's losing, appear to be the incumbent underdog, then woosh, like Reagan swoop in and win....leaving the republicans to wonder with "egg on their face".

Posted by: steevy at May 22, 2012 11:10 AM (7W3wI)

379 I just wanted to come to this dead thread to say IT'S NOT BUSH OR OBAMA. I mean, it's more Obama than Bush, but it's THE GOD-DAMNED DEMOCRATS. I mean, yeah, both parties have been budget losers, but the deficit was heading for control (with a nasty bump here or there) until the idiot votes gave the Democrats the Senate and more importantly THE HOUSE which controls the purse-strings. At that point they went absolutely ape-shit with the spending, then locked it in and the Senate (dem) has been sabotaging budgets since then to keep spending high, so instead of $140 billion deficits we have $1400 billion deficits. Now, $140 billion deficits were idiotic, $1400 billion is suicidal. Or homicidal, since they're killing *us*, they will take their large graft accounts and retire to gated communities. I get so sick of the "It's all on the President" crap, and supposedly intelligent people do it too. It's the ideology, not the office, that causes the problem. The House does the most damage, followed by the Senate and the Presidency. Effing Obama can't even get people to *laugh* at his budgets, not to mention vote for them. He loves to waste money, of course, because he's a LEFTY!
