Hard to say where one stops and the other begins.  I'm just shocked that such ethical Lilliputians could've weaseled their way into an organization that I'd previously held in very high regard and I'd have thought the entrance barriers would've eliminated (I've done contract work for DFAS and could pass a clearance test the JEF couldn't dream about).  And the very least that I'd expect is that they'd take their punishment like men and just try to scurry off into faceless anonymity rather than pushing this shit after they've obviously fucked up.  It doesn't say anything positive about anybody involved.

Re: Recycling.

The only think worth recycling in Aluminum.  I've read in multiple places that it's cheaper to collect, haul and clean the aluminum than it is to mine new boxite.

Facts back this up as well.  Aluminum is the only commonly produced garbage they'll pay you to take because it has resale value. (Obviously I'm excluding things like copper that aren't "commonly produced garbage.")  Everything else is more or less a net loss.

I'm also not sure I understand mandated yardwaste collection.  Around here it's a crime to throw yard waste in the trash, meaning you either have to compost it yourself (stinky) or pay for yard waste collection.  Seems to me yard will easily decompose.

Modern landfills are also reaching a zenith of efficency these days.   They're gettting better at "sorting" (used losely) the various "types" of trash, and a few of them have begun tapping the pile to collect the methane and use it as fuel.  So in a sense, everything is recycled.  And after some years (10 or 20ish I forget) when most of the rapid decomposition is done they've worked on retooling the landfills as things like golf courses.

By and large I think the market forces can handle waste.  There are obvious outside incentives to do things like reducing packaging (if it can reduce cost) and whatnot. The wife and I don't recycle and we've been slowly reducing our trash output without any actual effort (packaging is shrinking, for diet reasons we buy more fruits and veggies, etc. We've haven't been actively trying to shrink it, it's just a trend I've noticed over the last few months: I take the trash out less.)

I couldn't figure out how they made money. Ads don't justify the amount of value it was supposed to have.

Back in the first tech bubble, my parents and other people kept trying to push me into getting a job with one of, any of, the startups.  I kept telling them that a.  I'm not a code monkey so there were not jobs for me and b.  I had no idea how these companies planned on making money.  From what I could tell, pretty much all any of those companies made were press releases.  Turned out I was right.

Here's the thing on the Facebook IPO, call me old fashioned, but I thought the point of an IPO was to raise capital for the company.  In that respect, the IPO was very successful.  Now, if the point of an IPO currently is to gamble with the stock, then it was not.  This all goes back to the farily meta question as to whether or not the market is trading the value of the companies behind the shares or if the market is trading the value of the stock shares independently of any other value.  If it's the latter, well, as I told a financial guy last night re: currency exchanges, I'll just go to Vegas, at least there I get free drinks.

I did the McD's thing back in highscool. For whatever reason our checks were basically perforated 8.5/11 single sheets without even so much as a fold in them.  You had to see manager to collect said check.  One swing's favorite pastime was comparing wages.  She got pissed off when she found out I made more than she did (I was competent and had turned down a promotion to swing several times, but to keep me around they kept giving me wage bumps until I hit the "salary cap" or sorts that you couldn't be X above base pay without taking a promotion.)  She complained to the store manager that it was unfair.

We got fancy security checks soon after that.  I think they used her raise money for that .

FWIW, McD's wasn't the worst place to have a HS job.  I have limited self control so I put on a bunch of weight (my fault).  But I learned to thrive under pressure and the constant stare of angry indviduals.  And I made decent cash for a no experience job.  I only ended up bolting after they threw a hissy fit when my cousin died in an accident and I needed some time off to shuttle my parents to the airport and help coordinate stuff back home while they were gone.  The store manager tried to appologize for the assistant's hackery but it was too little too late. (I called them the night we found out to tell them I wouldn't be in the next morning, my first and only sick day in 5 years, and the grumpy lifer of a assistant said "cover your shift or be fired" so I said "fine, I'm fired then."  The store manager called back the next day apologized and I stayed on for a few weeks, but took my normal college leave and just never came back.)

When they started recycling here they went the whole banana. Individual cans for collection as well as special bags for kitchen garbage that you had to buy from local stores with the intent being that would encourage people to recycle.

Those "special bags" were a disaster from the start.  They were weak and split easily dumping garbage when you picked them up.  This resulted in people having to buy two sets of bags, a good bag for the garbage and a special bag to wrap around the good bag.

People finally screamed enough to get them to get rid of the special bags.  But the county enacted a new special property tax to offset the "loss of revenue" from the special bags.  So we saw the real intent revealed. And recycling?  Still doing it.

I think Stossel did a special report one year about recycling where he followed the tracks hauling in all those separated trash cans. The only thing that was separated out was the aluminum and steel. All the other "recycled crap" was dumped into a common landfill.

Depends on when and how exercised, I guess. That brings up another pet peeve of mine, the whole person X is worth amount Y. Is that is actual, tangible goods or is that in stock options? Because those options can go poof just like that. That's actually a plot point in a Judith Krantz novel, Our Plucky Heroine is told that hey you're worth a whole lot of money and she says fine I need cash and the broker's response is well you don't have cash per se and she says so I'm broke then. I believe that's what happened to Joan Rivers when her husband died, she was caught in a liquidity crunch and that's why all of a sudden she was all over the place again. She needed cash.

The whole raise thing has been much standardized since then (at least at the corperate stores).  I was there from 2k3-2k9ish.  Every 6 months you'd get a performance review with corresponed to a (potential) raise (pretty much everyone got a raise but the bottom was 5 cents, not much these days.)

The managers never bragged about getting me raises.  They'd hand me a review with a number at the bottom (usually 20-40 cents) ask if I was OK with that and we'd move on.  I did get one huge raise when I went from "15 and not able to do shit by law" to "16 yr. old opener" (Before the 24 hour stores.  I had been working a 6AM shift anyway, the earliest a 15 year old could come in, so opening wasn't that much different, 4:30.)  The bump to "Normal base pay" from "15 year old base pay" plus the McD's equivalent of shift differential netted me something like $1.60 pay increase. (If you primarily opened and/or closed you got a flat wage increase rather than any actual shift differential.  Premium pay I think it was called.)

After I stopped opening the current store manager let me keep the premium pay as an end run around the aformentioned salary cap.  Never any braging about it, just a "we're going to keep you at this salary because we'd really like it if you stayed around."  When I left I think I was making $8.50 or so, which isn't bad for a no skill job (this was back when Minimum wage was $5.15 so $8/hr was still a pretty high wage. Plus I usually got scheduling preference when it came to days off, which had its own benefits.  And if I needed more hours they were easy enough come by.)  If I had taken any of those promotions I'd have been making over $11 more likely.

Your average McD's swing manager isn't thinking that far in advance.  She probably just saw it as "I'm not letting him have the day off."

I actually got a similar threat several years later working at a grocery store.  I was part time, I started the job before I found full time work out of college.  I found a full time job a few weeks later, but stayed on at the grocery store because my girlfriend (now wife) was living out of town, and I really didn't have anything to do on the weekends, so I figured I should make some money with my spare time.  The hours weren't that bad (I worked seafood, so the earliest shift was 7AM and the latest was 10PM).

Said store (with it's forced unionization) often relied heavily on the fact that most people needed these jobs.  They came to me and said "we're transfering you to X store (farther than I wanted to drive for $7/hour minus union dues) and you'll need to start working 32+ per week, no more 10 hour weeks for you! You have no choice unless you want to quit." (I worked the Weekend shifts no one else wanted, namely saturday nights, so this was strange to me that they'd berate me for working too little?)  I blinked and said "you do realize this is a spare job for me right? As in I don't even really know why I stay on spare.  The money's only passable.  Sans choice, I'm leaving.  Thanks."  They stopped, sputtered a bit and actually say "We thought this was your only job, oh....uhh..listen, stay on here, we'll find someone else to transfer."  I lasted another few weeks before the department manager (who hated me for no reason other than I had another job.) decided that my "no Friday's rule" was no longer an option. My primary job was at a lab, so I couldn't really control when I left, which is why I didn't want to be scheduled any Fridays.  So after I got fed up enough, I just quit.
