Happy Monday.

While you were sleeping, Obama's Secretary of Commerce, John Bryson, was cited for felony hit-and-run for fleeing after hitting two cars in the San Gabriel Valley. He was later found unconscious in his car. According to reports, neither alcohol nor drugs played a role.

Here's a fairly good analysis of the possible outcomes in the Obamacare case and the U.S. v. AZ case. Oh, BTW, the Supreme Court will be handing down decisions in at least one case this morning at 10.

Oh, and Republicans are starting to believe that maybe this Romney guy is serious about kicking Obama out of office after all.

Hey, and Obama's support among Jewish voters has dropped 10 points since 2008.

6 It has got real in CO and NM now as wildfires are burning peopleÂ’s homes and forcing evacuation.  It seems that these massive fires are becoming common place now after decades of stupid eco-green land management policy. If I was a resident of one of these States I would be demanding that the State government tell the EPA and the department of the interior (in court) that these stupid fale eco policies were not going to continue.

12 The 2012 Highway Bill appears to be stalled in a joint committee with no agreement between the Republican House and the Democrat Senate. The House wants the Keystone Pipeline and spending limited to the amount that is collected in gas taxes.  Of course the Senate wants the opposite of that. My recommendation is for the House to NOT pass another temporary extention which is what it looks like they are going to do. It is time to grow some nads people. Tell them to take it or leave it.

32 "According to reports, neither alcohol nor drugs played a role." That's, of course, the wrong way to put this. Neither alcohol, nor drugs, were even investigated as playing a role. If the cops never ask, you'll never have to tell. Did the cops know who this guy was? Did he tell them he's a Cabinet Secretary and they then decided not to do a field sobriety test? Take blood, or give him a breathalizer? The things this article DOESN'T SAY are glaring. What were the results of his field sobriety test? Did he refuse a breathalyzer test? What were the reults of his breathalyzer test? Was he even asked to blow? Why not? Guy had just hit two cars and been involved in a hit-and-run. If it was you or I, we'd be forced to take a breathalyzer test or face forfeiture of our license. If he was only slightly injured why was he not booked? George Zimmerman was booked? Why was this man not booked into jail, then provided with minor medical treatment? Why was he allowed to go to a hospital (and let the alcohol wear off)? Was blood drawn? Did they check for alcohol or drugs? Is the reason alcohol or drugs not suspected because nobody collected any evidence? I want answers. These are the questions that the media are deliberately not providing us the answers to because there is a whole lot more to this story that an up-and-coming blogger would be asking.

"This is not a new phenomenon, but the signs are that neglect is rising. We know that once again times are hard, but it's too simplistic to blame poverty. Charities such as Christians Against Poverty have revealed that one in 10 families are in debt, but this is no reason for neglect - and it's an insult to the poor to imply otherwise. At the other end of the scale, ask any public school principal and they could tell you of wealthy families guilty of gross neglect: they pay the cheque for the school fees and consider that to be the end of their responsibilities."

40 Well, I understand why Ace has to go to registration on this site, but it's still a bit of a bummer.  Hopefully it won't be as bad as when Tim Blair had to go to moderated (ick) comments when he moved his site inside the Daily Telegraph; while still populated with a clever group of commenters, it lost a lot by removing the "immediacy" of the comments.

But the site owner is like the bar owner:  it's his rules what counts, and that's OK by me...

I'm not sure why anybody gives this fat cocksucker credit for anything other than knowing how to separate fools from their money.  Reading his Wisconsin analysis in the WSJ on Thursday all he talked about was how effective the Repubs were in their get out the vote process.  Nowhere was there a mention of the word "conservative" or an indication that if you have the wrong message, all the fucking GOTV efforts would go down the shitter.  Nor was there any credit given to the Tea Party for the work they did.  Before I get accused of being "too angry" the pudgy fuck's organization has done a good job of producing some effective ads against the JEF.  But his shilling for the wind power subsidies just shows that TEH ARCHITECT is serving up the same type of big spending shit that lost Congress to the donks and gave us El JEFe.

42 "How will you sock puppet if you have to register a different name?" And remember, all the major sign-in platforms are moving to link your account with your telephone number; so anytime someone on the left wants to SWAT you, they'll know precisely which number to spoof when they call the cops to tell them you've just killed your family. It should also make Obama's NSA tracking job just that much easier. By the way, since we're all going to have to reveal our real names (even though it's through a backdoor method) ... is Ace going to reveal his identity? Seems rather bogus to force commenters to link their accounts to their actual real-life personas if Ace isn't going to do the same. It's his site, and he can do what he wants, I guess, but advertisers pay for page views, and commenters here provide the bulk of the page views. I really don't feel Ace has thought through the implications of forcing people to identify themselves to Google or Wordpress (famed lefty institutions).

65 "How will any registration method force commenters to reveal their real identities?" Google, for example, will not allow you to create an identity without revealing your telephone number. That links your account to your real-life persona and provides a method for them to get your identity. Since these databases are routinely hacked, by vigilantes on the left such as Anonymous, that data will escape into the wild (if not be given directly to the Democrat Party by partisans inside Google.) All the other major sign-in providers are moving to this model (if they haven't already done it.) If you are forced to register, then you are giving lefty institutions all they need to track down your identification.

Thanks for the news roundup, Vic and Gabe.

Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.  Today is the birthday (1879) of Friedrich Gustav Max Schreck, an actor recalled as a loner who enjoyed playing odd characters.  He is best known, of course, as Count Orlok, the Dracula-substitute in the 1922 F.W. Murnau classic Nosferatu.  What is not generally known is how close the movie came to disappearing forever; after its release, the studio, Prana Film, was sued by Bram Stoker's widow for copyright infringement and driven into bankruptcy.  Mrs Stoker then spent the rest of her life tracking down every print of Nosferatu she could find in order to destroy it.  It is only by sheer luck that the few prints we have escaped her grasp.

In 2000, Schreck was played by Willem Dafoe in the movie Shadow of the Vampire, starring John Malkovich as Murnau.  The conceit of Shadow's plot is that Schreck is a real vampire, promised the blood of the leading lady once Murnau's movie is finished.

Today also saw the premiere of the odd 1916 comedy The Mystery of the Leaping Fish, a short starring Douglas Fairbanks as a parody Sherlock Holmes named Coke Ennyday who - in a broad slap at Holmes' cocaine habit - is constantly injecting himself with cocaine from a bandolier of syringes strapped to his chest!  The movie was written by D.W. Griffith (The Birth Of A Nation), Tod Browning (Freaks) and Anita Loos (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.  The movie can be found on a Kino International Fairbanks collection from 2001, or a Flicker Alley compilation from 2008, both available on Amazon.

And now I'm off to work.  Have a grand day, everyone.

They claim they do this to avoid spammers getting accounts, but the spammers have ways around that. Linking your account to your phone number allows Google to identify you in meat-space.

79 They are closing Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany. With little public notice, the Defense Department is closing the only top-level military trauma center outside the United States. They've decided that Military troops don't need big costly state of the art medical facilities in Dear Leader's Brave New World

I just got word this weekend that they are laying off school administrators and teachers at US military bases in Japan.

80 The hospital would have run blood tests on the Cabinet member upon admission and tested for several intoxicants in order figure out what the problem was regardless of what he told them. It is conceivable that the hospital refused to give the results of that testing to the police. Or that the police did not ask. If he wasn't under the influence he may have been having strokes or seizures. However, far more likely he was under the influence and hospital officials are covering for him.

"...maybe this Romney guy is serious about kicking Obama out of office after all."

Romney has to start touting his plan to fix things.  I'm honestly not sure what it is other than standard generalities.  Hammering away on Obama is great and all, and I hope he keeps it up, but he's got to get his plan out to the public, or else the punch-counterpunch thing is going to wear thin really quick on the public.

85 Here is some background on why Google is forcing account owners to link their accounts to their telephone number (and just a hint ... they'll let you build up some emails before forcing you to provide your phone number, to get you hooked in. They figure you'll give it up if they can prevent you from getting to your email until you agree to give them your telephone number. Works surprisingly well if you can hold someone's email hostage.) http://goo.gl/IBWt9

96 Seriously injured military personnel are treated in Germany and stabilized before they are moved to hospitals in the US. Closing Landstuhl, without a replacement, means these military members will die in the field, or on the way to the US. On the other hand, if these military members with catastrophic injuries do not survive, the administration will reduce the cost of their care, rehab and disability retirement. Cause they will be dead. Death panels indeed. Welcome to the new health care.

First, where are you getting that?  Yes, that was necessary to comment at the acedark site but I don't believe ace or anyone else has said how commenting is going to work *here*.  If so, please point me in that direction.

Second, I actually went to that link and set up a fake account with a fake name and left the mobile number completely blank and guess what?  It went through.  I completely and utterly agree that google will keep asking for your phone number.  That doesn't mean you have to give it to google.  That also doesn't mean you have to give your number.

Look, I utterly, utterly understand not wanting to give up real identity.  I am simply trying to see why you think ace is demanding that we do that *here* and, as of now, I see no indication one way or another that ace is.  Saying what google or wordpress or twitter does is not saying what ace will do.

Again, if there has been a public comment on this from ace, pixy or the cobs, please let me know.  Other than that, telling me what other platforms do is non-responsive to my question.

126 That 10% drop in Jewish support is going to turn out larger than stated.  Many of them are lying to the pollsters.

People are slowly starting to smarten up about polling.  When I started lying to pollsters some years ago and giving PC moonbat responses, I suddenly started getting my mailbox packed full of Democrat campaign literature and pleas for money from left wing organizations.

I suspect there's some faux-polling going on by unscrupulous people (i.e. the Democrats) strictly as a way to lower costs by using highly targeted approaches to sympathetic voters.

I observed no increase in Republican literature or pleas for money when I was giving more moderate or republican responses to pollsters.

Before answering any polls, interrogate the supposed pollster and find out precisely who they represent and are working for.  I've done this a few times and had them refuse to give specifics.  That's the tip off that its a faux-poll intended only to sharpen and target campaign pitches.  The legit ones, like Nielsen, Time/CNN, Rass, etc have no problem stating up front who they are.

152 Romney Pastel. You've got to read Michael Tanner @ NRO

http://tinyurl.com/7fp6u8j

Yet, for anyone concerned with the size, cost, and intrusiveness of government, dark clouds continue to hang over the Romney campaign. For example, if as is often said, “personnel is policy,” Romney’s decision to name former Utah governor Michael Leavitt to lead his presidential transition team is particularly disturbing, especially since Politico reports that Leavitt may become White House chief of staff if Romney wins. As George W. Bush’s Secretary of HHS, Leavitt was a principle architect of the Medicare prescription-drug benefit, which created the first new federal entitlement program since the Great Society. And Leavitt continues to call the program “a success,” despite the fact that it will add as much as $17 trillion to Medicare’s unfunded liabilities.
Leavitt has spent the last two years lobbying on behalf of Obamacare.

156 Can't overstate the importance of Obama's loss of Jewish support with respect to the Electoral College. Florida is the most important state and Jews are a major voting bloc in Florida. Obama only narrowly prevailed there last time around, despite McCain's mannequin corpse of a campaign. Even without Rubio on the ticket it would not be surprising if Romney takes Florida without having to move mountains. In that event the Romney campaign could divert precious additional resources towards the likes of Virginia, Ohio, Iowa, Nevada, etc. Romney actually has a fighting chance. In politics that there is half of the game.

158 Boston12GZ, how about you assauge our fears by providing a clear, unambigious statement from Leavitt that supports repeal. Surely the campaign has one in the can. While your at it, come up with something that assures us that Mitten's administration won't be a backscratchng, all-Mormon affair. Leavitt is Mittens first unforced error.

Yeah, I'll drop everything to do your job for you, because you're too lazy to do it yourself. Progressive much? Chant: "This is what Romney haters look like!" You, or someone with whom you agree, claims Leavitt has spent the last two years supporting Obamacare. Prove it. Should be a simple task, if it's true--yet the proof seems so very elusive. Otherwise you're just boring.

160 Why did the AP find it appropriate to identify a FBI agent as a tea party member?

""He's obviously it, and he's what is left," FBI agent ***** *****, an active member of his central Illinois tea party, said of Romney. "Anybody is better than Obama.""

The Bureau loves it when one of their SA's puts himself on the public's radar with partisan political comments. I imagine he can look forward to an interesting, if rather one-sided, conversation with his SAIC.

165 OK, Boston: leavittpartnersblog.com His blog, his advice for implementation. Note the absence of the words: repeal, unconstitutional, etc. Does he continue to retain a financial interest in the implementation of Obamacare? Has anyone asked him that question - I can't find an answer. I had forgotten he was a cap-trade guy back when he ran the EPA. He was a hack for Mormon church as Governor, has he changed - or will every sub-tier Schedule C appointment get bonus points for mission time and a set of oily balls to go with their temple recommend? You may not be aware, but Utah is rife with cronyism, graft, and confidence scams committed from within the Mormon church ranks. Mitt needs to rise above it. When JFK came in did he appoint a bunch of Opus Dei guys to high posts (other then his brother) -- no -- he was very careful to avoid the appearance Mitt seems to be inviting.

167 HuffPo today:

U.S.-Pakistan Relation At Dangerous Low
The U.S. and Pakistan are starting to look more like enemies than allies, threatening the U.S. fight against Taliban and al-Qaida militants based in the country and efforts to stabilize neighboring Afghanistan before American troops withdraw.

----

WaPo March 2010:

Pakistan said Wednesday that it was satisfied with U.S. pledges, made during a day-long strategic conference in Washington, to increase and streamline the delivery of military and economic aid and to "move from a relationship to a partnership."

"Today, I am a happy man and a satisfied man," Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said in a news conference with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. "I'm satisfied because you finally agreed to many of the things that we've been sharing in our discussions over the last, you know, two years."

The Obama administration's primary goals for the gathering were to create a new level of bonding between the two countries and to win increased Pakistani cooperation in the fight against the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

168 VA hospital held up by $3 million 'zombie fence'?

The new veterans hospital planned for Omaha is in danger of being delayed — possibly for years — by other VA projects that are taking far longer and costing many millions of dollars more than projected.

And the planned Omaha VA hospital, slated to open in 2018, already is experiencing cost overruns of its own that could further complicate its completion, said U.S. Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb.

His least favorite overrun: a $3 million security fence recently added to the project by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' national construction office.

Terry said the fence is meant partly to keep nonveterans out in the event of a disaster. Terry staffers have dubbed it the “Zombie Fence'' and joked about how it would keep the hospital safe in the event of a zombie invasion.

The Omaha congressman isn't laughing.

171 LIBYA has put Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor and her three colleagues from the International Criminal Court in "preventive" detention in prison for 45 days while investigations are conducted, a judicial source in Tripoli said last night.

"A decision was made to put them in preventive detention for 45 days while investigations are conducted," an official in the Libyan Attorney-General's office told the AFP news agency.

Ajmi al-Atiri, head of the brigade that detained the delegation after it visited Muammar Gaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam, appeared to confirm the officials comments, saying: "They were transferred yesterday to a prison on the orders of the prosecutor-general."

The lawyers appear to have fallen victim to Libyan suspicions that the West wants to take Saif Gaddafi to Europe so he can be tried in The Hague.
