The environmental impact assessment has been completed for the first segment of California's high-speed rail project. It finds that the project will foul the air, harm aquatic life, and threaten no less than eleven endangered species. Enviroweenies are not happy.
The Executive Director of the Congressional Black Caucus says that the word "cool" has objectionable racial connotations when applied mockingly to President Obama. Alternate Headline: CBC Official Would Prefer That You Called the President "Uncool."
Florida will sue DHS over its refusal to provide access to its database of aliens as part of Florida's purge of noncitizens from the voter rolls. DOJ already threatened to sue Florida over the same issue.

North Dakota's political and business establishment has lined up against the measure. The state Chamber of Commerce, farm groups, unions and most elected officials are opposed.
I suspect it is more “political” than it is business. All the special interest groups are lined up against it, imagine that.

Following a contempt citation, the presiding officer of the chamber is instructed to refer the matter to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia;[9] according to the law it is the "duty" of the U.S. Attorney to refer the matter to a grand jury for action.
The criminal offense of "contempt of Congress" sets the penalty at not less than one month nor more than twelve months in jail and a fine of not less than $100 nor more than $1,000.[10]
So what do you do when the one in "contempt" is the AG? Special Prosecutor?

Is there any way Romney can outlaw the CBC?. They might as well just come out and say "any word applied by a conservative to Obama that is not in praise of His maginificence is, by definition, racist. At least one good thing is coming out of this clusterfang of an administration - the race card is officially a joke; the first and last refuge of the dimwitted, the petulant and the Democrat (BIRM).
deep breath
Good morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Today marks the 1923 debut of Marlene Dietrich in the movie A Man on the Path. I've never found her particularly attractive - though her garters and top hat turn in The Blue Angel is bunk-worthy, but many men in Hollywood wanted her. The producer Joe Pasternak begged her to sleep with him. "When Hitler's dead," she told him. After hearing that Hitler had, indeed, killed himself, Pasternak immediately showed up at Dietrich's door, ready to collect. "Hitler's alive and well and living in Argentina!" she snapped and slammed the door in Pasternak's face.
Today also marks the release of Enoch Arden in 1911 - or, rather, the first reel. Based on the Tennyson poem and directed by D.W. Griffith, it runs for a length of about 17 minutes. The Biograph company, however, was convinced people wouldn't sit that long to watch a movie and insisted Griffith release it in two reels, to be shown on different days. Reel 2 was released on June 15. To everyone's surprise but Griffith, audiences wanted to see EA in one sitting and Biograph was forced to splice the reels together into one film.
Thanks for the news roundup, Gabe and Vic. Hope all the Horde has a wonderful day.
How are you feeling this morning, Vic?

Under this process, the procedure for holding a person in contempt involves only the chamber concerned. Following a contempt citation, the person cited is arrested by the Sergeant-at-Arms for the House or Senate, brought to the floor of the chamber, held to answer charges by the presiding officer, and then subjected to punishment as the chamber may dictate (usually imprisonment for punishment reasons, imprisonment for coercive effect, or release from the contempt citation).
Scenes we'd like to see eh.

I went to see Prometheus yesterday in 3D Imax. Never seen a movie in that format before, it was pretty impressive. The movie's not bad, but don't let the reviews fool you: it's a prequel, just with more monsters, and a setup for more sequels.
And I still can't decide whether Noomi Rapace is good looking or not. I don't have that problem with Charlize Theron, tho'.

Female teacher and male student=sex.
Male teacher and any gender student=molestation.
If you don't understand the difference, you don't understand teenage boys. (No I am not condoning it, yes the female teachers should be prosecuted, unless, you know, they are really hot).

If someone enters my home illegally, I have every right to believe that person is a threat and react accordingly. I don't care in the slightest that it's a cop. The burden should rest, at all times, upon the police to ensure that they are entering the proper home. There have been far, far, far too many instances of the police using full out SWAT techniques on the wrong homes. I would say that's part of the point of SWATting conservatives, the odds are far higher that the conservative will have a gun and will protect his/her family and the cops will shoot him/her dead. Let's face it,, given how official immunity is applied, there are really no blocks on the police to keep them for kicking down any door they like and then saying "oops, sorry about that". After all, if you shoot back, you go to jail. If they kill you, your pets, your spouse, your kid, too bad so sad.
Will this place greater burdens on the police? Yup. Do I give a shit about that? Nope.

If there's probable cause, then it's not illegal to enter. Vic, one of the unintended consequences will be the sudden discovery by the cops that they have probable cause to enter anywhere they like.

It appears as a reaction to the state supreme court's idiotic decision that the police have unlimited power. Not sure if it's a good idea or not, but it sure sends a message.
I wonder what the stats are on the number of screwed-up "no knock" raids there? You'd think that the cops would be pretty careful to double-check their info in cases like that, but from what I've read, they seem to be somewhat lax in that lately.

I think the intent of the law was to protect the homeowner in an after the fact proceeding, but the unintended consequences here are potentially very bad.
In the end I think the law is a bad idea and it is really a patch to try to fix other bad shit. This. Insty's been beating this drum for years. Believe me, I'm all in favor of the whole "support your local sheriff" idea, but when the cops kick down your door without warning and start spraying hot lead before finding out that, whoops, it was the wrong house! and retreat back behind the blue wall of silence to cover their asses, it damn well ought to be legal for you to shoot back. Maybe if a few of the power-tripping assholes had to consider that an armed citizen was behind the door who would blow their ass away - and not get prosecuted for it - these damned raids would slow down. Yet another freedom issue that Mitt should hammer on.

I was reading over at Hotair how in England you can theoretically be sent to jail for wondering out loud how it is a woman can pass thru airport security without ever removing her hijab to show her face - one guy did, and was detained and sternly lectured for over an hour at the airport, missing his flight I guess.
Furthermore, if you are in fact jailed, it must not even be reported in that oppressed land what precisely you said to get you in trouble... Shit, even Commie Czechoslovakia at the height of the 1950's Cold War wasn't THAT downright evil.
I would be afraid to travel to Britain these days. When I visited communist Czechoslovakia as a teen I was nervous but took comfort in my US citizenship. Britain now, quite frankly, would terrify me.

With our militarized cops intent on kicking in doors when you are most likely to be confused and frightened, the argument isn't about the shooting, which will happen. It is about the after the fact prosecution.
At this point, anything that makes the police think twice about acting like soldiers in a hostile foreign country is a good thing.

The best thing about this story- well, aside from the Dad protecting his daughter, is that the police don't seem to have taken his story at face value. I say that's good, because when (as seems likely at the moment) he's let go without charges, the public can be relatively certain that his version of events is accurate.
I'm all for Dad's protecting their little girls, I'm also for rule of law. It's a happy day when both can be served.

Not me, that's far too lenient of a punishment.
The whole point of a civilized society is to have lines drawn that say, "Beyond this point, you absolutely will not go. Ever." And then mean it. Back when we actually had a bit of masculinity in our society, this was the norm. Laws were equally applied, and there were limits to behavior. Of course, the laws have to make rational, common sense to everyone, that goes without saying.
As we've become more feminized, we've seen this attitude discredited, and judges growing more and more lenient WRT the damage that someone with no self-control (and so apparent soul) can do to an innocent child.

Sick beyond control? If so, he would be incapable of functioning in society, because he'd be doing it wherever/whenever, willy-nilly. I'm pretty strongly attracted to women, yet I do not rape. Not even the ones who wear those short skirts. Not even the really hot half-asian ones...
But for the sake of arguement, I'll conceed the point. In such cases, I endorse and advocate what I call the Old Yeller principle. Old Yeller was a good dog for many years. It was by no means his fault that he went mad. YET - what had to be done was clear. Old Yeller had to be put down. It was sad, it was regrettable, but it had to be done. Same with irredeemable whack jobs like Sandusky.
Personally, I don't like idea that the main deterent to child molestation would then be a life on an island of like-minded individuals where you get to live out the rest of your days in peace. This is the instinct to do-gooderism. It must be crushed down and acknowledged for what it is - sentimentality trumping justice.

They'll change it from "black" to something else without warning, and then everyone who hasn't got the new memo will be racist. "Muslims" used to be moslems, particularly before 9/11. Searching the CNN archives will confirm that, but after 9/11 it became taboo to call them moslems, so now I make it a point to only refer to them as moslems, mainly because it pisses them off, and since they aren't a "race" they can't call me a racist.

In a perfect example of "what goes around comes around" ...
A coalition of environmental justice and civil rights activists has filed a complaint alleging that cap-and-trade provisions in California's pioneering program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions discriminate against people of color.
The groups, which represent minority communities, accused the California Air Resources Board of violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when it agreed to allow polluters in low-income areas to use carbon offsets to buy their way out of pollution reduction under the state's global warming reduction plan.

This lady figures that her daughter DESERVES to play at the park, no matter, and she shouldn't have to go out of her way because of some naked man she'd rather brush by than call the cops.
She told police she tried to walk past the man when he stood up calling out, “Come here little girl, I want to stick it in you.”
What kind of a moronic mother doesn't anticipate the worst and take evasive action rather than insisting on approaching apparent danger? As if bad things would never happen to her or her little girl.
The news relays possible "bath salts" to blame. And had the man pounced on the girl and eaten her face? A day at the park. damn.

Interesting brouhaha in Virginia over the abrupt firing of U-VA President Teresa Sullivan over the weekend. She had only been there two years and was only the 8th president in the 200-year history of the U. The Board of Visitors is appointed by the Governor, but this one is equal numbers appointed by Democrat Tim Kaine (who is running for Senate) and Republican Bob McDonnell. The chair is a Democrat. The vote was unanimous, so it doesn't appear to be political.
I personally think we have hit a crisis point in higher ed all over America. Too many of these big universities have hired female presidents just for the "diversity" cred, and they are overrated and underperformaing. Teresa Sullivan was considered a star in the high ed world, but for no apparent reason. The fundraising was lagging, top professors were retiring, and she failed to embrace the change that the Board wanted. She was "popular," but the U. needed a serious visionary leader who could take it to the next iteration of what the university is going to have to be in the future. I commend the Board for seeing this early on and acting decisively to correct the previous Board's mistake.
The whole Elizabeth Warren fiasco is another case in point. She is a mediocre scholar with a pedestrian background, yet got herself promoted constantly until she reached the pinnacle of a tenured prfessorship at Harvard Law School. Elene Kagan is another. Definitely more brilliant than Warren, but wholly undeserving of a Supreme Court appointment. I am a Harvard alumna and I was pretty disgusted when it hired Drew Faust as President. This was 100% reaction to the whole Larry Summers debacle, which also pissed me off.
I'm a woman and I enjoy seeing successful women in all walks of life, but I do not enjoy seeing mediocre women promoted beyond their abilities just because they are female.
