— Gabriel Malor Happy Thursday.
Last night, the Canadian House of Commons voted to repeal the much-abused hate-speech section of the Canadian Human Rights Act. That free speech win was a long time coming in America's hat.
According to a new book about Obama's foreign policy, former SecDef Gates, pissed at the White House for the operational leaks about the UBL raid (in particular John Brennan's inaccurate bragging), offered a "new strategic communications approach." "Shut the f@*k up," the defense secretary said.
President Obama and Gov. Romney are both taping comedic segments for the opening of tonight's Country Music Awards.
Obama also made an off-color joke about his wife at a fundraiser last night, which has some folks on twitter aghast. I absolutely agree that racy jokes about women are absolutely unacceptable and absolutely inappropriate---absolutely at informal fundraisers like this one---and I'm absolutely shocked that this president (or any president) would use a pregnant pause to suggest that he has sex-thoughts about his wife. Absolutely.

Right you are that the House pets don't get it at all. The real trick would be for the feds to spend LESS on energy by getting out of the way so the produces of energy could do their jobs and all us citizens could benefit from lower energy costs.

Sharpton knows that the Repubs couldn't have stolen the election because their ethics would get in the way, they are too dis-organized to do it well, and, more importantly, even when the Dems professionally steal an election, they never achieve a 7% lead.

We should not gloat too much about this. We did not repeal ours, the Supreme Court struck it down. Too bad they did not do the same thing to the equally unconstitutional "hate crimes" law.

They're still operating on the Rove "compassionate conservatism" playbook where Repukes spend just as fucking much as commiecrats only to different people. It's all part of the fat cocksucker's strategy that produced the Permanent Republican Majority that worked out so well in 2006 and 2008. All those fucks need to be purged.

eh - can't get too outrageously outraged over this, it is a baby step forward to cutting spending *overall*. yes I know, baby steps won't cut it in terms of the mathematics of our situation, but baby steps is about the only thing that can work in a practical sense in this current climate.
It would be nice to see precisely which amendments failed because the new vs. old Republican members disagreed.

That is the point, they didn't cut spending at all overall or in the energy budget. They increased spending. And that was the amendment that half the Republicans joined the Dems on, an amendment to cut some more so there would be a real reduction in spending.

First, Obama isn't smart enough to write that gag himself, or deliver it without practice. He screws up too often reading a damn teleprompter for Pete's sake. The gag was tailor made for him to deliver to that crowd.
Second, he's not trying to present himself as Mr. Super Straight Guy...he actually dropped a hint that his wife went down on DeGeneres. *shudder* He knew exactly what he was saying and how it'd be read. There's just no way the fool wrote it himself of "slipped up" saying it.
Third, I'm puzzled why Gabe is acting like he got the vapors over it when it seems he loved it.
I think it was a hint at what's long been surmised about them as well as the Clintons, except in this case, both Obama and Michelle are queer. Obama for sure.

Last night, O'Reilly asked a Dem WHY Scott Walker raised 7 times as much money as his opponent.
He actually pressed the point after all the talking points were brought up, and answered the question. It's because people are sick of the progressive results and simply won't contribute.
The Dem had no comeback for that. Occasionally, O'Reilly does get one right.

I'm still getting mixed signals from the crew of Repuke turds in the House. Back in 2010 we were all told the usual blah blah about how by controlling the House you control the purse-strings to de gubiment and that some hard choices were gonna be made. Only not a fucking thing was done, or as little as possible, because THEN we were told that the commiecrats were spoiling for a shutdown which would be a nightmare for the Repubs because the MFM would yammer on about how fucking heartless they were to deny abortions to kindergarten kids on the taxpayer's dime. All that does is just defer the day of reckoning on making the hard choices and makes it that much more expensive to do so. Maybe it's the correct political strategy but it's pretty fucking unprincipled imo and treats people like they're a bunch of ignoramuses. And I'm still not sure they'll ever really cut spending.

THIS. But many people never let reality get in the way of righteous indignation. The Purity Brigade lives.
This was my point early in the primary season. You take what you can realistically get. If I end up with Mitt Romney in the White House but total Republican control of both the House and Senate, that's a win. No, I didn't want Romney, but he's more conservative than Obama. To think otherwise is a denial of reality.
To think you can reduce spending in the current environment without both houses on Congress on board is also a denial of reality.

You and Dagney obviously don't know how spending bills work. All it takes is some balls which only about half the House Republicans have. You pass a budget bill with real cuts and you send it to the Senate with the message. This is what you get, take it or leave it.
If they "leave it" you say tough titty and you get NOTHING. That is an even bigger cut.

Yeah, I'm willing to take that dare. The people are tired of the spending. Wisconsin not only went Red, but then the "extreme" Governor survived a re-call (the first time in US History that has happened) with an even bigger percentage of the vote than he won initially.
I think we have enough evidence that the House could at least float a trial balloon, yes?

What "point" is there to miss? You were driving a car, you hit someone who you could have avoided, they died. That's vehicular homicide. What does it matter if you hit them because you were texting, or because you'd turned around to smack your kids, or because you were driving while otherwise impaired?
The law shouldn't be interested in "reasons" except, perhaps, as matters of degree. It should be interested in actions and their consequences.

"Starve the Beast" hasn't worked in... (this, that, carry the SCOAMT...) ever. Among other things are the fact we're allowed to BUDGET FOR DEFICITS. Think about that, the US Government just gets to put on it's budget, "Yeah, we don't actually have this money, but we're going to spend it anyway." That's insane. It also means that, as far as the appropriators are concerned, money is a purely theoretical construct which allows them simply to will more into existence, regardless of what the Treasury brings in.
Yeah, cutting spending is going to be hard. People are going to scream- we've seen it pretty well proven that you can state your case, however, and that the voters will back you.

First, I'm not disagreeing with you. I only offered a reason why it was done. Second, oddly enough, society changes over time and technology that wasn't around when the law was originally written may, occasionally, impact on society. In which case it seems prudent to modify the law to ensure "coverage" of the original intent of the law. As an example, until recently wiretap case law didn't cover the Internet.

Yes, it does. And I wasn't griping at you, but rather the people who actually believed that piece of pseudo-reasoning. However, given both of those things- you can't seriously believe that texting while driving is somehow better or worse than any other form of distracted or impaired driving.
The difference with wire-tap law is that it is very technology specific, and the way you would "tap" internet transmissions is different than the way you'd tap a phone line. For one thing, there's a lot more chance that you'll accidentally pick up transmissions from people for whom you don't have a warrant for the tap.
I'm not saying that law shouldn't change when warranted; I'm saying that all of these stupid "with a cherry on top" laws are... well... stupid.

I still submit it wouldn't work. I'd love to try it to see, but we work on a fiat currency which we've already proven we're willing to inflate just for S&G, and we assume we're going to spend more than we take in anyway.
There are only two ways to stop that: The sane method of, well, stopping that, and the insane way of waiting until the axiom "what can't continue, won't" is proven yet again.
Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) Channelling Breitbart at June 07, 2012 04:58 AM (8y9MW)

------------------
Well, actually, they're right on that one. Just because it's our enemy in charge of the budget right now doesn't really change the dynamic of how a modern fiat system works.
Taxes don't "fund" anything at the federal level - they're simply a money sink to drain the supply. No money exists at all until it is spent into existence by the federal government. Money that is taxed/fined/etc. only truly funds things at the state level where it acts as a commodity of limited supply. Payment of money to the federal government simply removes that money from the system - returns it to the nothing from whence it came.
Thus, taxes are only relevant in two ways. First, they create a demand for money, and force us to work for the government. If we don't figure out a way to get that government-issued green stuff, and then give it to the government when ordered, we go to jail. Second, they are used to modify behavior through incentives.

Good morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.
Since AOSHQ is going to be off-line, as it were, tomorrow, here's a little old movie roundup: Sunday the 10 marks the birthday of Sessue Hayakawa, the first Asian actor in Hollywood to be cast as a leading man. Immensely popular - at one time rivaling Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks - with fans, his breakthrough movie was the silent "The Cheat," but he is best known today as Colonel Saito in "The Bridge On The River Kwai."
It also marks the day in 1924 when MGM, taking over the property from the Goldwyn company, fired the entire film crew of "Ben-Hur," scrapped the meagre amount of footage that existed, tore down all the sets and returned from Italy to California to reshoot.
Have a wonderful weekend, Horde. Stay safe and happy.

If they all defaulted (the sovereigns and the banks) it would get ugly pretty fast. We'd have to do Tarp II.
But that said, my personal theory is that Greece will have a partial or full default. Portugal might as well. I think Ireland will muddle through, and that Spain and Italy will be bailed out.
I also think that the ECB will be forced to carry out a bank bail out. They'll go kicking and screaming, and the Germans will bitch and moan about it, but they'll do it. A bank rescue would fix most of Spains worst issues - they're not the same kind of basket case that Greece is.

Obama's Third Party History
Minutes of the meeting on January 11, 1996, of the [Socialist] New PartyÂ’s Chicago chapter read as follows:
Barack Obama, candidate for State Senate in the 13th Legislative District, gave a statement to the membership and answered questions. He signed the New Party “Candidate Contract” and requested an endorsement from the New Party. He also joined the New Party.
Consistent with this, a roster of the Chicago chapter of the New Party from early 1997 lists Obama as a member, with January 11, 1996, indicated as the date he joined.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans lining up for new jobless benefits fell last week for the first time since April, a hint that a slowdown in hiring last month may only be temporary.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 377,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. That was spot on the median forecast in a Reuters poll.
