— Gabriel Malor Hey, Friday, how you doin', gurl?
There was a mass shooting at a midnight screening of the Dark Knight Rises near Denver. At least fourteen are dead, dozens more are injured after a man wearing body armor and a mask came through an emergency exit and started shooting into the audience. He apparently also used tear gas in the theater. They have the man in custody.
NY Daily News reports that, for the first time, NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, and CW (CW, really?) were completely shut out of the Best Drama category for the Emmy Awards.
I got nothing else.
The Denver shooting is less than six hours old and already I see people using it to make political comments. The Left is already muttering about gun control. The Right is already muttering about the Left muttering about gun control. I'm happy I'm going to be on a plane for most of the morning, so I won't accidentally see any more of that garbage.

Ramadan started last night. Just sayin.
Probably a nutter. A very organized and methodical nutter. Gunman only 24 but did a lot of planning for this; multiple weapons, body armor, incendiary device to obscure exits. Young nutter with extra cash for guns, ammo, practice range time, and bombs. Probably played alot of "Call of Duty" type games.
Just sickening.

There will surely be be a police press conference between noon and three local time.
If the shooter was a right wing nut the conference will be earlier and full of details. Otherwise it will be later and the police will only tell us what we have already learned from the news.

I'm not much in the mood for Hollywood stories today (and besides, nothing interesting happened on this date), but here are a couple of quick ones about the Warner Brothers' screenwriter Arthur Caesar:
He was famous for his parties. One, which was for the wives of his best friends, took place in the living room of a famous downtown LA brothel (those of you who remember some of my earlier posts will not be surprised to know it was the MGM-run brothel known as "Mae's."). As the lady-friends looked around in horror, Caesar smiled, "If we sit and wait here for a bit, I'm sure most of your husbands will soon join us."
Caesar also loved to travel. On his first visit to London, he decided to visit George Bernard Shaw. He knocked at Shaw's door, and when the great author appeared, Caesar introduced himself as a fellow writer from America who had come to pay a call. Could he come in and have a friendly chat? Shaw gave Caesar a long look before saying, "Go walk around the square a bit until I get used to your face."
Hope all you 'rons and 'ronettes have a wonderful day.

Something inspired the shooter...
Well, he likely wouldn't have seen the movie. I'm no psychiatrist, but these people want to do something big, to get attention, to have power. They also seem to me to be suicidal, whether they do themselves in or not.
I think the only connection to the movie is that it's a place where the shooter knew a large number of people would be for an anticipated event.

We should remember how the idiots do with these kinds of breaking stories. They actually no almost noting, so they report the flash items and then endlessly speculate.
In the end we find that between 50% and 75% of what they initially reported was bull shit.

Killer(s) used a hand gun, a long gun, and some type of explosive device.

I think they just think a TV station has more security than it does.
Many, many years ago I worked one summer at a local tv station. The new general manager came in and there was some pretty major construction done to the main station offices. This was supposedly done for aesthetics but the true reason was to up security. When the staff, including the on air talent, started to bitch about all the new security measures, he simply put up a bulletin board with press clippings about all the shootings and attempted assaults on newscasters across the country in the previous two years. That shut people up.
I was working as the front desk receptionist so it was my job to buzz people in and the like. As a result, I took a keen interest in safety since I was the first person that the nutters would see. I noticed a distinct flaw in the plan that no one else had. The day that the project was complete, the manager was going around all proud showing everyone the bullet proof glass and the double locking doors and all that. He asked me what I thought and I said "It's great. And it's all right behind my head. Everyone will know something is wrong when my brains splatter all that glass." He stopped dead and stared. I was right. It was all directly behind the reception desk. There was absolutely nothing between me and the outside world other than the front door which had no outside intercom. I had to buzz in everyone to see what they wanted. The manager's response was pretty much well shit. It was kind of hilarious.

Because the last time I went to the movies (MI4) it cost me almost $40 for a classy dinner of Wendy's before the show, the movie ticket which was a regular show not an IMAX or 3D show, a small bag of popcorn and a small drink. All I could think was that for that money I could have gotten at least two blurays or ordered five or six movies on ppv and I could have sat at home getting drunk. I also thought that if I were a kid out on a date and I dropped around $80 for Wendy's and a movie, hell yes you better put out.
There is a $3 movie theatre very close to me that shows first run films. The screens are small and it's not stadium seating but it's clean and whoever is running the projectors actually runs them at the appropriate light setting. Needless to say, that place is always packed.

If people can't be influence by video and audio representations then the entire Advertising industry is a fraud.
Since Hollywood and the Nets are the major purveyors of filth, violence and demented thinking, shouldn't they come in for some criticism now and then?
No, of course not.
They charge millions for an ad campaign and then claim that violent and sadistic acts have no influence on those who watch it.

Actually, they do both. If you want to see a movie well before it has a home video release the only alternative to the theater is a cam file, where somebody sneaks in a video camera and makes a recording to post to torrent sites.
Cams are horrible. The best I've seen look like really bad DVDs. You have to be really desperate to settle for one of those. The only reason I've ever sat through one was to see for myself something notoriously awful in a movie.
Once the Blu-ray hits, then there will be decent torrents available. I tend to wait a few months after the disc release before torrenting. The MPAA tends to only care about new releases. The only people I know who have ever been hassled over a torrent download had acquire something in its first week or release or a cam or a screener.

Big screen is a superior experience to home theater, and the odds of being gunned down in a theater are probably still way less than being struck by lightning. I'll take my chances. Anyway, shunning public events/outings because we might get shot is absurd. We should all just arm up. An armed society is a polite society.
That said, I can somewhat sympathize. There have been some times when I've gone to the movies and the unwashed, mannerless underclass scum have showed up. They play with their phones, talk, and generally make asses of themselves throughout, until the manager is summoned to expell them. Those people ruin the experience, so if you live in an urban area that is rife with such trash, going to the movies is probably no fun.

The Colorado shooting is a senseless tragedy. One of the sickest aspects of it is that the first place most people's minds have gone -- and I count myself among them -- is, "How is this going to be politicized?" For that I blame the media, 100%. If Jared Loughner could be acting on the subliminal messages of Sarah Palin's vulnerable Democratic districts map, despite never having seen it, then anything's possible when the MFM is involved.
The one to blame for this tragedy is the shooter. He should be punished to the maximum extent of the law, and his victims should be mourned while the survivors should be supported.
But the ones to blame for the inevitable fallout are the media. And they get no pass from me.

That's the news for you. The very nature of news is they report events that are outliers in the regular operation of society, but this hopelessly myopic view doesn't work in the 24 hour news cycle. Once the story has been reported, they need to move on and find other stories; but that's hard. So instead they take the story they have and blow it up into something much larger than it is. It isn't the daily norm that a lunatic teargasses a theater full of innocent moviegoers and then proceeds to kill and wound dozens of them. But if the MFM makes it SOUND like there's a psychotic killer around every corner, they don't have to do any legwork for the next week or so to find other news.

That pause button is a big thing for us older viewers. I was saying last night in the ONT that at 2 hours 44 minutes plus trailers and other crap, that there was no way I was going sit through a theatrical screen of this movie.
I just don't get excited for new releases anymore, just as I don't feel a need to watch a good TV show every week. I'm happy to wait for the season to end and download the set to watch at my leisure.
Back when I still went to movies a lot there were a few incidents where I forcibly relieved some idiots of their laser pointers. It's a mystery to me how as I'm neither especially big or muscular but I seem to frighten some people when my dander is up. None of them ever offered any resistance.

Gahhh... If there were any justice those half-dozen idiots would have been dragged out back and given a good thrashing. Enough of that and we'd finally have some order. Bad parenting and bad public education are turning this place into a hell hole.
Happily here in my part of flyover country, the underclass are either not as abundant, or they are priced out of the movie going experience. Which is maybe a good strategy - keep pushing up ticket and refreshment prices until the scum can't pay any more. It works with property taxes to keep them out of my part of town. I'll happily pay a premium for that and still go out to the movies. I don't go to the theater to be inexpensively entertained so much as I do it to get out of the house, take a drive, and ignore my phone, computer, and the outside world in general for a while.
Posted by: Reactionary at July 20, 2012 04:49 AM (xUM1Q)

I would like to use the analogy of the wife nagging the lazy husband to take out the trash. Days after the initial polite request to take out the trash our sloth goes into action and gets the job done, only to return to a freshly angered spouse. This is because the act of taking out the trash reminder her of how long she had to nag him to make it happen.
I am reminded this morning of how long we typically have to wait to find out the name of the shooter when he has an islamic sounding name.

If someone runs in with a gun, you Stop them immediately. Or you might end up bleeding out on the floor next to 14 other victims."
Amen.
In a lot of cases retreating to add distance makes sense, but in a confined, crowded space like an internet cafe or a movie theatre, moving fast to close on the perp with a violence of action is probably the way to go. He's not expecting it, you put fewer people between you and the target, the shot's easier, the backstop may be better. Move and shoot.

Indeed. And there's also "crazy." Don't forget crazy.
We, as a society, are obsessed with finding some addressable cause for every unpleasant reality. We refuse to accept the simple but true statement that "shit happens." You can't fix/prevent every bad thing, and trying usually just makes things worse.
That's part of the reason why I contend that the damn do-gooders are the ones who do this country the most harm. How many mass shootings have the do-gooders facilitated, simply by disarming everyone else? How many of life's natural pleasures are made into chores or sources of stress by those moralizers? I can't have salty, fatty bacon? I can't be trusted to own a fire arm? I can't do this, that, and the other? Well, fuck you. If this is what is supposedly bringing us ever closer to paradise, then I say that life was better when it was worse.

There used to be someone who parked in one of the few handicapped spots in the parking garage for my old office. This was someone without a handicapped sticker and who was not handicapped in any way. He did this consistently and when I confronted him about it, he told me to fuck off. In a sheer, utter, completely random series of events, that afternoon some mysterious person dumped a strawberry milkshake all over the front window of his vehicle. It was a pity that.

Steve Jobs used to do that with a prime parking space at Apple when he rejoined the company. They dealt with the problem by repainting the space to no longer be designated for handicapped. Talented marketer but a serious asshole as well.
When I still lived in Thousand Oaks I noticed during the Xmas shopping crush at the local mega mall that there was this customized Corvette that was always parked sideways taking up three spaces. This was during a time of year that parking was so packed that they were running shuttle buses to and from the hinterlands of the mall. The would also be towers set up for security guards to keep on eye on all the cars.
The arrogance of the Vette owner really pissed me off, so I went over to one of the dividers with shrubbery and gathered up a mound of dirt and rocks to deposit on his hood. The guards in the towers didn't care as long as I wasn't trying to break into the car.

LOL. Unlike your sort, we have no need to rationalize what some crazy person, who happens to be white, does. This guy will almost certainly be found to be some nut with a screw loose. In any case, if there were some general problem with whites being mass murderers, well, there'd be nothing to be done about it anyway. We're still the most numerous group, we have no particular agenda against the state or society, since we made most of it. Nothing could be done. Thus, there is no "root cause" as you people like to say, that could be gone after.
Where generalization is essential is in the case of identifiable enemy groups, like muslims (of any color). In the case of those types of fringe minorities, there is value in considering policy alternatives to deal with them.

The idea that kids may never have a late night with the grown ups is a bit too do-gooderish for my tastes. Now, letting the kids run wild and set their own schedule - that's another thing. A big noisy movie that was WELL past any baby's proper bedtime -- let alone the parents, who at that age in their child's growth should be fighting for as much sleep as they can get! And what about the other moviegoers, huh? Like you say, a complete lack of consideration on these parents' part. Thank God neither they nor the child was killed or injured, but good Lord. Grow up and act responsibly.

Three-month old babies at a midnight movie? Eh, I can't summon up all the open-mouthed amazement of most of the people here. Babies that small typically only wake up to eat, so the parents would figure mom could breastfeed her in the dark if necessary and then she'd go back to sleep. I wouldn't do it, mostly because who has the energy to go out to a midnight movie when they've got a newborn at home? I pretty much slept whenever the baby did, but I can see the thinking. Movies like that are pretty loud, but who knows what's normal in that home? Maybe the baby's used to loud noises all the time and would just sleep through it. Older than that though I think is wrong - 4 year olds should be home in bed at midnight, not trailing around after their parents just to see a stupid movie. Wait until the crowds clear and go to a normal evening showing when you can get a sitter or go to a matinee. People with little children should be able to exert a little self-denial and not have to go !!opening night!!! because it's what all the cool kids do.

The point of taking babies and toddlers to a midnight showing is less about the kids being there (though at a violent movie, I still shake my head) and more about the noise those children are likely to cause that would disturb the enjoyment of the other moviegoers. You want to believe that if the three month old baby had started bawling halfway through the film that the mother or father would have taken it out of the theater until it calmed down. But how many of us here REALLY think that's what would have happened? And who REALLY thinks if that toddler had started running up and down the aisles and complaining about being bored that the parents would have taken him or her out of the theater?
Again, it's a lack of consideration. Exercise some self-restraint, or wait and get a sitter and go opening weekend instead of opening night.

Yeah, letting your first-grader stay up on the 4th for the fireworks that start after dark is EXACTLY THE SAME keeping your first-grader out until 3 in the morning because you want to see a movie.
Probably a good thing no one ever wanted to have a family with me, what kind of childhood would they have had, home in their beds at 2 a.m. instead of out in the local googleplex drinking corn syrup?

It's unreasonable to expect children that young to be well behaved in that setting. The only way I'd have been taken to a movie like that at that age is at the drive-in, which isn't an option in most places anymore.
The first time I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey was at the Thousand Oaks drive-in. I was probably five or maybe six depending how long this was after the release. I recall having a hard time following the movie, partly because I wasn't awake for all of it. A few years later I saw it again and discovered I wasn't that lacking in perception the first time.

12 years old is old enough to behave in a movie theater. But toddlers at a movie not aimed at small children? This is frequently a gross disregard for everyone else who has paid to be there.
This.
Not to mention, a midnight showing on opening night of a film that's been as hotly anticipated as "The Dark Knight Rises" is bound to be packed to the gills with diehard fanboys/fangirls who are NOT going to be forgiving of your child being a disruptive nuisance. For the most part, children that young aren't going to know to behave any better; their parents should.

My parents were taking us to the movies as young as 1 year old. She took my brother to Jaws when he was 4. The rule they had was that if we started being loud, they'd leave the theater immediately, that's it.
If we're talking about jerks who take their kids to movies and then let their kids ruin said movie for the rest of the audience: I'm on board- they're jerks. That is possibly the stupidest thing I've heard thus far in relation to this tragedy.
People, let me restate my earlier point: lunatics with guns and teargas are not lying in wait behind your movie theater, prepared to step into the darkened theater and spray the crowd with bullets. THIS IS NOT NORMAL. This is an awful aberration, and the act of a sick individual who I pray is considered mentally stable enough to stand trial and get some asspounding jail justice.

If the parents regularly required good behavior of the kids, I wouldn't have been forced into awareness of their presence. A good theater going experience should imbue no recollection of anyone in attendance who didn't come in with you. I'm not there to make new friends or hear their conversations.

Reminds me of when I was in high school and got my ass kicked, was never even able to get a punch in and yet I still got suspended for 3 days.
I remember telling the principal after being informed of my suspension: "But I never even hit the guy!!!" to which he responded "Yes, but you wanted to hit him" to which I responded with as much control as a 16 y/o male has in that situation "Well no shit I wanted to hit him! You would have too! That's also irrelevant."

How about "mandatory incarceration for all males aged 15-55" because that's about the only thing that can actually have an impact. It also has the same effect as gun bans, namely, punishing the overwhelming law-abiding majority at the expense of the criminal minority.

@487 I bought the tickets for my kids 3 weeks ago. In our little town of 45,000 there were 8 midnight shows last night and all were sold out.
Last summer we all went to see the Harry Potter movie at midnight and it was actually fun. Lots of teens in costumes, including a Voldemort and a Dumbledore who acted out a battle in the aisle before the movie started. I wanted to be there to see this movie with my son, who was pretty much raised on the Harry Potter stories. Was a great experience.

But a name that just seems Anglo-sounding warrants an immediate investigation into the Tea Party and smearing an entire political movement.

Yeah, one of my employees committed suicide recently. A really good kid. Was working for me, getting ready to go to college. Wanted to be a neurologist. Had sex with his GF who was 16. Mother was pissed and forced a statutory rape charge.
Hung himself right before the hearing.
He was always in a cheerful mood, joking around, working hard and gave no indication that he was in trouble.
Just an awful situation.

Use them, exploit them, casually murder them if they are somehow 'defective', 'unwanted', or any other dehumanizing phrase that happens to be in vogue.
It's why I am a social conservative. Finances are important, but the core of our ideological opposition is not financial incompetence - it's bloody-minded eugenics/ubermensch utopian Marxist evil in disguise.

"The Left is already muttering about gun control." Of course they are & then the govt. will be the only ones with the guns & we've seen what they can do (Fast&Furious).
Need to read a book about Americans finally taking a stand against federal tyranny cause it's so current today. Our constition is being attacked daily by corrupt politicians & the left media. www.booksbyoliver.com I recommend it. It's a thriller & a good reason to defend our right to bear arms.
@561 I concur. If someone had a concealed gun then maybe so many would not be hurt, but yes, that would make sense because it worked in times past in our history or maybe the man would not have gone in the movie theater in the first place had he thought that there might be someone with a weapon there.

I appreciate the fact that you are trying to become better-informed about the occurrences last night in Aurora, but you have been somewhat mislead, in that I am not the man who did it. I am not a 24-year-old gun-slinging killer from Aurora, I am a 22-year-old book-slinging mass eater from Littleton. Somewhat distinct, I would assume. But I would appreciate if you would read this particular post an not assume that it would be interesting to be friends with someone on Facebook who is very probably going to be in jail and not be able to confirm your friend requests anyway, or even be friends with his girlfriend, who had the rather interesting experience of having to tell someone she had a job interview with that she is not, in fact dating a serial killer. James Holmes happens to be a pretty common name, surprisingly, so try not to jump the gun.

Article 133—Conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman
“Any commissioned officer, cadet, or midshipman who is convicted of conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.”
Article 134—General article
“Though not specifically mentioned in this chapter, all disorders and neglects to the prejudice of good order and discipline in the armed forces, all conduct of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces, and crimes and offenses not capital, of which persons subject to this chapter may be guilty, shall be taken cognizance of by a general, special, or summary court-martial, according to the nature and degree of the offense, and shall be punished at the discretion of that court.”

"As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family. All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors," Obama said.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said in a statement that he and his wife, Ann, were "deeply saddened by the news of the senseless violence" that led to the loss of life and injuries. He said they were praying for the families and loved ones of the victims "during this time of deep shock and immense grief. We expect that the person responsible for this terrible crime will be quickly brought to justice."

Yes, yes I do.
Because it's Captains and Majors who give Article 15s and proffer Court Martial charges. Not 3-star Generals sitting in the E-Ring. If you think otherwise, then you don't know a lot of active military types.
See, there's a little thing called "undue command influence" and it doesn't take much to prove it. Basically, no one can tell you that you cannot file charges if you have an actual case. The first flag officer that tells a Captain or Major to withdraw an Article 15 or stop doing a 15-6 investigation will, in turn, find himself up on charges.

If the senior officer corps of our military hasn't changed in the last few years (and it hasn't), I wouldn't put much stock in proper application of Art. 134 to conduct in these particular cases.

I've long wondered why red haired women are usually so mean spirited/spiteful (compared to women of other hair colors). I believe the roots lay in color psychology. It's known that different colors induce different emotional states, and that red in particular increases aggression. So, if you see a bunch of red every morning when you look in the mirror, naturally you will become more aggressive.

Another phony doctor:
In late 2008, San Diego FBI agents investigating al Qaeda-linked cleric Anwar al-Awlaki came across an email from an Army psychiatrist asking the American-born cleric his thoughts on American Muslim soldiers killing their non-Muslim counterparts.
"Would you consider them shaheeds (martyrs)?" Maj. Nidal Hasan asked in an intercepted email.
Sufficiently alarmed, the San Diego agents forwarded the case to agents in Washington, where Hasan was then stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. But instead of interviewing Hasan or his commanding officers, FBI agents conducted a brief investigation and determined Hasan was not a threat.
