Al Qaeda in Iraq is seeking to reassert itself now that the U.S. has withdrawn. Yesterday was the deadliest day this year---93 killed in bombings across 13 cities and towns.
US Airways has reacted to a new, supposedly pro-traveler Department of Transportation requirement that they print on tickets the allowance and cost of interlining baggage by simply stopping interlining when passengers have been ticketed for different legs of their journey on different tickets. This means that, for passengers using separate airlines for separate legs of a journey, passengers will have to collect their bags from baggage check, re-check them on the next leg, and then go through security again.

Good morning, all. Hope you had a great weekend. It's Monday and I'm back at work, so you can understand I'm not in a great mood. Sunday was the birthday (1893) of the Bride of Frankenstein director James Whale. Sir Ian McKellen gives a fascinating recreation of the man in the movie Gods and Monsters. There won't be much in the way of birthdays this week, so I'll probably be telling stories most days.
So let's start with screenwriter Ken Englund, whose credits include No, No Nanette, Androcles and the Lion, The Big Broadcast of 1938 and episodes of Bewitched, among others.
In the essay Quick! Boil Some Hot Cliches, Englund, beginning: Let us roll up our sleeves and tray to scrub some of these cobwebs off our celluloid. There was a Geneva Convention to outlaw poison gas; can't the members of the Screen Writers' Guild get together to ban and consign to limbo the following which I have tried to categorize? mentioned 16 screen cliches that still ring true. Here are a couple that I enjoyed:
The Outdoor, or, Aint-Nature-Grand Love Scene:
The Girl in a tight white sweater takes a deep breath and looks around at the other wonders of nature and exclaims (after much coaching): "Oh, Timothy, isn't it beautiful?" Timothy takes a look at her heaving sweater and exclaims back significantly: "Sure is!" and his meaning isn't lost on anyone.
The Star Can't Go On and The Understudy Takes Her Place:
Leo McCarey had the only practical suggestion for a new switch on this chestnut. The Leading Lady gets sick. The Understudy gets her big chance. All her dreams have come true. She runs, puts on her makeup and costume and then, as she descends the iron ladder, she trips coming down in all her excitement and breaks both legs. The show never opens.
Army and Navy Stories:
Honest to God, it's moider, fellahs! Is there some law or somethin' that says we gotta have a guy from Brooklyn in every company of the US Army, Navy and Marines who sighs for Moitle, rhapsodizes about the beauties of Prospect Park - ad nauseam?

I have serious concerns about the Muslim Brotherhood's influence in Washington, but I wish the person speaking about it was someone with more clout.
However, after Politico's efforts to portray everyone in Minnesota as Islamaphobic rubes, I am not going to attack Bachmann.

"Marine Corps creates law enforcement battalions"
Julie Watson, AP News, 22 July 12
The law of war allows for fighters to use deadly force as a first resort, while police officers use it as a last resort. If Marines are sent in to do law enforcement but are attacked, will they go back to being warfighters? And if so, what are the implications? Solis asked. "Am I a Marine or a cop? Can I be both?" he said. "Cops apply human rights law and Marines apply the law of war. Now that it's blended, it makes it tougher for the young men and women who have to make the decision as to when deadly force is not appropriate."

I agree completely, but we shouldn't stop there!
We should ban comic books because look what they did in Colorado. And of course movies, because if it weren't for the Batman movie everyone would be fine.
But that's not all. 25,000 people are killed by drunk drivers each year, so we should ban alcohol, and cars just to be sure.
THEN we will be safe!

Blame Bachmann for acting stupidly.
Michele's problem isn't necessarily that she begins an assault off base, but that she RELIES on sensationalism which is immediately distorted (as intended for fundraising or attention whoring affect). The problem sensationalizing a verified point, or sensationalizing a fact, is that the entire premise gets corrupted as everyone over-reacts in CYA fashion, highly personalized rather than objectively discussing the record. Babies get self righteously tossed out with the politically incorrect bath water. Cue: McShame denouncing Bachmann as an Islamophobe, summoning the Washingtonian gauntlet response. Hillary Clinton Sec. of State associated, subtly or not, with the Muslim Brotherhood? Perish the thought, literally. Kill the pain in the ass messenger.

I am no fan of estate taxes, but in this case it was even worse. The IRS assigned value to something that had no value (in monetary terms). This is a worse precedent - it shows that assigning value is utterly arbitrary. Your family photos, a totally unsellable item, could now be deemed to have value if they so choose, and THERE IS NO RECOURSE. That is what kills me - there's no real process to escape this. Imagine if that art had been the only thing those heirs had inherited - they'd be screwed beyond belief. It's nothing but a huge albatross, thanks to the interfering do-gooderism of the damned State.

I find it amazing that our response the most successful/effective act of terrorism in US history has been to give the offending group greater access to power, wealth, special privelege, and secrets.

Right now the best way is to pauperize yourself when the end seems to be near. Sell off the non-cash inheritance to the heirs for next to nothing. At least then they only have to pay capital gains. The cash part, though, is tough. Large gold purchases/sales are tracked and reported. But then, if you're rich you should be paying people to tell you how to get this shit done. To assume that the government will in some way be benign and helpful is foolish wishing.

Beginning his term, Obama aborted/limited tax deductions for charitable donations (he told Americans to donate to good causes whether OR NOT there was a tax break) even while he promoted the big titty baby "non-profit" tax subsidized organizations as a highly touted employment venue. Obama usurped the funds traditionally providing true charity to the "widows and orphans" to pipe into grants for non-charitable but also non-profit organizations, awarded to those of Marxist ideology.
Now in the last stretch of his term, Obama orders the IRS to focus on the taxes paid by non-profit organizations. Perish the thought that Marxist ideological non-profits are given a "free" pass by Mr. "I am not an ideologue."
Luke 7
41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.

Hmm. Interesting. Well, smuggling through a major air port sounds rather unwise. As a last resort (and I mean LAST resort) I've always thought the best (though slow) way to get gold out would be to charter a private yacht out of Florida and sail away. It's not like they all get tossed by the Coast Guard (though that is increasingly common, as the Coast Guard becomes more thuggish year after year). If you portion out small enough amounts of gold at a time in your new home you can evade reporting.
Personally, if I manage to get rich I'm going to just pay people to figure this crap out for me so as to legally keep hold of as much as possible. If those guys can't get me ahead of the game, then I'll consider more radical schemes.

Sadly, Truman was no better than FDR. He was another Stalin lover, and a man who winked at Communism. He either was partially sympathetic, or was eager to turn a blind eye to it. Truman has a way better reputation than he deserves. His unwillingness to win the Korean War as MacArthur had suggested should be sufficient evidence of that. We had a chance to teach the commies once and for all to respect their betters, and to prove our resolve to make them pay the ultimate price for their aggression. Instead, we had a long war in Korea, we had Viet Nam, etc.

Good morning, all!
Well, I say "good morning," but it looks to be a rough one. In half an hour you've got the NCAA announcing sanctions against Penn State. Then at some point you've got dyed-hair-psycho getting arraigned in court out in Colorado. It's going to be a difficult day for a lot of people.
Regarding dyed-hair-psycho (I refuse to use his name, because he deserves no notoriety), I still don't buy that he committed this atrocity while believing that he was the Joker. I know everyone says, "Well he had his hair dyed like the Joker," but that's silly. If you think you're the Joker, you're going to try to LOOK like the Joker. Dyed-hair-psycho's hair was dyed red, not green. One of the key things to the Joker is that his hair is GREEN. And the Joker wears clown makeup and flashy suits, not black SWAT gear. All the photos that have started to come out of him in recent days -- from AdultFriendFinder.com and Match.com -- show him with the ugly red hair. This would seem to imply that he dyed his hair at an earlier date.
I think it's far more likely that he's "just" a disaffected loser who dyed his hair because he felt like he was just part of the furniture anywhere he found himself and he wanted to stand out a little and show his individuality. I don't think he did then, nor does he now, believe he was the Joker; there are no voices in his head telling him he's the Joker. I think he felt a sympathy for the Joker's goals -- to cause chaos and "watch the world burn" -- because he's an anti-social asshole who will burn in Hell. But he gets no psychatric passes from ME until I have diehard proof that he's mentally unfit. And even then he'll STILL burn in Hell.

What fraying government safety net?
Poverty is spreading at record levels across many groups, from underemployed workers and suburban families to the poorest poor. More discouraged workers are giving up on the job market, leaving them vulnerable as unemployment aid begins to run out. Suburbs are seeing increases in poverty, including in such political battlegrounds as Colorado, Florida and Nevada, where voters are coping with a new norm of living hand to mouth.
I'm sure that somehow this is all Bush's/Republicans/Tea Party's fault. But have no fear Barry will tell a few stories and we'll all feel better

Gahh. What better proof is there of how effective Leftist propaganda has been? It's sickening. If I were murdered, I would hope that my friends and family members would demand justice. Not with crazy enraged antics, but with a simple appeal to justice - wherein the penalty is equal to the crime.
If the government will not hand out actual justice (rather than making "mercy" a habit) then the citizen has no real legal recourse. He is forced to either accept a gross injustice and try to live with it, or he must make his own justice. I think this part of why fantasy stories like Bat Man and The Punisher and such like are so popular - people WANT vigilantism more and more, because the legal system is increasingly unjust. It punishes the law abiding over minor things, and yet it lets the violent criminal suffer only a fraction of that which he deserves.

I'm glad to see someone else saying this. I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in discussing what sanctions are appropriate, anything to do with JoePa or the like since it is very apparent that all parties (including me) will not actually listen to the other side.
What does bother the hell out of me is the apparent lack of concern by everyone for what this is going to do to the PSU football players who had not a single solitary thing to do with this. Oh, let's not forget the ripple affect on other players. Let's say that the NCAA does the minimally right thing by those players and lets them transfer without needing to sit out the year. What does that do to the players on the teams to which they transfer? Do those schools get a free scholarship or does some other kid get his scholarship yanked? Why is it that its the players who end up getting screwed over when they didn't do this.

As stated above, I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in discussing what sanctions are appropriate. I have been concerned that everyone seemed to be ignoring that there are current players, who did nothing wrong, who will be impacted by this. That bothers me deeply. The players will be the ones actually affected by this and no one seemed to give a shit about that. The players didn't do anything. Why should they have to pay the price?
If I read it correctly, the length of the post-season ban means that all players can transfer and play immediately which seems fair to the players. I still want to know if the scholarship follows them or if the school has to rescind someone else's. That's something that I am torn about. On the one hand, allowing the scholarship to follow the player seems to undermine the point of eliminating the scholarship from the offending school. On the other hand, it is deeply unfair to both the transferring player and the player already there to take the scholarship from a current player to give to the transferring player. Now, there may be regs on this but I didn't see anything in the cursory reading I did on the penalties.

When it comes to ruling who gets to play, when and where, the governing institution is the NCAA, not the school itself, thus making the questions about transferring and eligibility properly addressed by the NCAA, not the school. The NCAA has pretty much dictatorial powers on those issues.

No they don't. That was part of the ruling. No penalties on players transferring.

That makes no sense. PSU is going to pay the scholarships at other schools?

"That's not what Bachmann is alleging. She's claiming that Huma *is* a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. And now Ellison too."
Well, the Brotherhood did pay for Ellison's trip to Mecca

No, we don't. That's on the head of PSU and Joe Paterno.

Actually, that's pretty fair. Makes sense. See AtC's comments above. Otherwise, either the player transferring loses his scholarship or a player at the school he's transferring to loses his.

The scholarship will follow the player. That's more money out of the PSU program. It's proper to me.
Thank you.
The affected players can seek compensation like everyone else does in this fuckin country - through the courts.
If you're trying to craft a solution that both punishes PSU and is "fair" to any third party who might possibly be affected, it's a fool's errand.
Oh, I agree that there will never be anything that's completely fair. I've simply been concerned that there was a pool of people whose interests appeared to be being ignored.

That's how it sounded to me. Scholarship $$$ don't just fall from trees.
Posted by: PSU Grad at July 23, 2012 05:41 AM (7+pP9)
That's not how football scholarships work.
Schools are limited to a certain number of scholarships each year. Money is not the rate limiting step.
No matter what, any PSU football player who transfers to another school and gwho gets a scholarship slot is going to bounce someone. That's the nature of the beast.

Ahh, another 'Ramadan is holy' delay, just like the one at Gitmo for one of the terrorists about to go on trial. Strangely enough, a terrorist group claiming responsibility for the Bulgarian bombing has said they plan to do many more attacks during Ramadan.
So the rule is -- Okay to kill infidels during the holy month, but not okay to be tried for your crimes during that same holy month.

I was using the royal "we."
Shit happens. Deal with it. A football scholarship is not necessary for success in this country. Neither is a college degree.
Adapt to your circumstances and find a way to overcome them. Or piss and moan about how it's not your fault. Either way, no one is coming to help you, and you will die cold and alone in the dark.
Or you could figure out a way to succeed despite the bad choices of your organization.

Your attitude is bullshit. Paterno may well have been a scumbag ( i think so) but his image was as squeaky clean as it gets. That is a big draw to the family of a young athlete looking for a program. Kids that went to Penn State to play for Paterno are not responsible for his guilt.
As to the NCAA, they don't give a shit about the young athlete. Every sanction for a school punished the athletes and allows the coach to walk free (Pete Carrol).

Okay, back to something important, I'm now really confused on the Bachmann thing. I was initially very confused by the attacks on Bachmann for saying that Huma had close family members with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood because I thought it was common knowledge that this was so. Bachmann's now saying that Huma has direct ties herself?
That's it, I'm going back to playing The Secret World all the time, at least I sort of understand that.

Of course, if Holmes had shot up a theater full of Jews or Wall Street one-percenters, he'd already be scheduled for a primetime speaking slot at the Democrat convention.
It frustrates me that, according to the morning news, he lawyered up. If you think you're making some statement by gunning down people, then stand up and take ownership of it. This is just the prelude to a Jared Loughner plead-out.
Yeah, I'm pretty damned pissy today.

Of course my reputation is encumbered by any resume I carry to my employer, but the basis of his argument that I was being an asshole was that it costs me nothing to carry a resume to my employer. Here is an actual line seared in my memory from the phone call because he screamed it at me: "You can't just not do this."<<<<
Are you looking for advice on what to tell him? I'd go with something like, "You can't just not suck my balls, playboy. You got a job on my referral and you fucked it up. Lose my number or the next time I carry your resume, it'll be on the tip of my boot on its way to being kicked through your asshole.
Best of luck in your future endeavours, fruitcake."
Feel free to change some of that around and personalize it.
Seriously, the main problem I have with networking is that you just dont *know* these people, so how can you refer them?

The only place i have seen that alleged is here by Gabe. In fact, Fluffies link gives direct response to that in the letter to Keith Elliason.
By the way. While the attack is on Bachman because she is consider the easy target, the letters are signed by 3 others including Louie Gomert.

Especially since those very same bullets are still sold today as Winchester Ranger bullets. Box is marked LEO Only, but that is only company policy, not law.
My FNP45 that I use as my concealed carry has Ranger 230 gr +P loaded. 15 in the stack, 1 in the pipe, with two spare 15 round mags. Might not have gotten through his armor (looked like Level II, too thin for level III) but it would have put him on his knees with a center mass hit.

I was once asked my opinion about a former co-worker. This was someone whom I worked with for about four years in a fairly small office (under 15 people). My response was something along the lines of oh well we didn't really work that closely together so I can't say if she'd be good for the position or not. She got hired, she fucked up and then I got yelled at for giving her a good reference. I stared at the person doing the yelling because, seriously, does anyone on the planet not know that what I said was the polite way of saying oh hell no don't hire her.

Ok, I spotted your problem. Hamstringing requires subtelty and faux politeness. What you needed to accomplish, though, was backstabbing, which calls for a more direct approach.
"No, don't hire her - she was a disaster at the last place I worked."

Do NOT do this. Especially if you were in a position of authority over that person. You can be subject to a lawsuit. Our labor attorney has repeatedly told us to not ever give someone a bad recommendation. That the safest thing to do is to simply tell the person inquiring "Yes, I can confirm that they worked here for X amount of time. No, I really can't say anything else."

No one else would dare say what she has said.
I'm sure you mean no one else would be so idiotic to say what she has said. Zero proof of anything, but that won't stop her from making sleazy accusations. I still can't believe some people thought she was presidential material.

Note how Gabe says her accusations are "sleazy" and "idiotic" but can't answer the question about Huma's family being Muslim Brotherhood (as is widely reported).
Gabe also throws out the line about the accusation being that Huma herself is MB. From the links that fluffy posted, it appears that that charge against Bachman comes from Islamist excuser Keith Ellison.
Is there some quote Gabe, of Bachman saying Huma is a member of rather than close to the Brotherhood?
If Bachman is making that accusation and is wrong about Huma being a "card carrying member" should that end it?
