The Tampa Bay Times is reporting that Sen. Rubio will introduce Gov. Romney at the convention, something that should provide a boost to both men. USAToday is reporting that Gov. Christie will deliver the keynote address.
Beleaguered talking head Soledad O'Brien was caught yesterday reading from the liberal blog Talking Points Memo to question a Romney surrogate about the Ryan plan.
The Obama campaign's shrill fundraising emails just got worse: "why the hell did Romney pick this guy?!?"
GIGANTIC HORROR BAILOUT: The Treasury Department now says taxpayers will lose $25.1 billion on the auto bailout, 15% more loss than it last reported.
With respect to the question of Sarah Palin, Palin's statement on the convention is ambiguous. It does not rule out any of the possibilities: (1) she was offered a spot, but turned it down; (2) she was offered a spot, but hasn't decided yet; or (3) she wasn't offered a spot. What we know for sure is that Palin expressed an interest in going and RNC Chair Reince Priebus expressed an interest in having her there. Where things broke down after that is an open question, but until we know that Palin was actually snubbed, I'm not going to get het up over it.

I know it's Scarborough, but it's really worth watching. I think it's significant: you can feel the fear in the lefties as they listen to him. All the lefties pretending to be happy with the Ryan pick-- it's false bravado. That Onion "editorial" was on point.
Paul Ryan is pretty much the only guy I can think of who could simultaneously excite the GOP base, the Tea Party, and RINOish MSM establishment pundits like Scarborough. (And, god willing, appeal to independents and disaffected Dems too.)
Still, I love the fact that David Frum hates the Ryan pick and hysterically warned against it. Totally confirms I think of David Frum.
Romney's no Reagan, but with the Ryan pick he may have put together a combined ticket (and campaign) that may well deserve the term "Reaganesque."

Congressman Paul Ryan is the poster boy for the extreme Republican leadership in a Congress [well, leadership period, since in comparison to us democrats any leadership at all is extreme] whose overall approval rating is 12 percent [not really. His plan [psssh, who comes up with plans] to dismantle Medicare is deeply unpopular with the general public, and especially undecided voters [though not with seniors, and that has us pounding the panic button].

Here's the calculation: Mitt Romney doesn't need or expect Paul Ryan to convince even one undecided voter to cast their ballot for him [and yet he is still going to convince a a LOT of undecided voters to cast their ballot for him]. That's not what he's on the ticket for. He's there to reassure and inspire ultraconservative ideologues and corporate interests that they will have one of their own a heartbeat from the presidency [and he has already been an incredible success at that too, ZOMG].
That means tens or even hundreds of millions more dollars for the Romney campaign and the array of outside groups supporting him [from all the groups abandoning us] – and if current trends hold, more than 90 percent of that money will be spent on TV ads [and frankly, Obama has already blown his fundraising wad] -- lying, distorting and trashing Barack Obama [with the truth]. Those ads will have more impact on undecided voters than anything Paul Ryan himself does or says [which is scary, because Paul Ryan is going to have a huge impact].
Mitt Romney is convinced that picking Paul Ryan is a great investment for him [and this is a guy with a very successful record of identifying good investments]. And his campaign is already touting the pledges and donations they've received as a result, with fundraising events planned for this week [and frankly, Obama is already on the verge of collapse just trying to break even with his rate of spending.
We're already being outraised, and we can't afford to fall further behind.

Yip @33, I disagree. Picking Christie as VP would be the wrong message to Tea Party conservatives, because as a candidate on the ticket he would bring all his not-so-conservative baggage (e.g. on social issues)-- as a candidate, you'd have to take him as a whole.
But as a *speaker*, especially on the issues that the R/R campaign is most focused on, I can't think of anyone better to deliver the red hot red meat. Fiery, combative, taking no prisoners, pulverizing bullshit-- what's not to like? The fact that they chose the Christie tone, Christie rhetoric for the keynote speech, is an auspicious sign to me.

What is interesting is the housing market down turn has even hit that area. She apparently bought it for $5million. When the 13 bedroom house built in 1928 originally went on the market two years ago the asking price was $13.5 million. But no one bought it until after the price slashing.

Obama touts the GM bailout as one of his great successes, but it has in reality been a terrific failure.
Sooner or later (and probably sooner, as in a year or two) GM will be right back in the position it was in 2008, asking for billions of government dollars. Obviously, who controls the White House and Congress will affect how it plays out. GM may end up having to go through the regular bankruptcy procedure, as it should have initially.

If by chance she is to deliver a speech, fine. But this campaign is not all about Palin. She said that it's about supporting the Romney/Ryan ticket, particularly by attracting Independents.
By playing as she's been allowed by her party leadership "betters" Palin pulls through, cutting through the crap when given enough leash, permission with her unique down home sincerity to call it the way she sees it.
Meanwhile, it's not about Palin or anyone else not on the ticket. Of course she'll attend the convention. Not everyone attending gets to make a speech from the pulpit. And she's retired from public office and working directly in public relations with her fine FOX media position. She gets ample opportunity to speak her mind to the national audience. No harm, no foul.
...and the establishment has usurped the Tea Party as promised.

The convention should be about Romney/Ryan, so I can see why they wouldn't want Palin in a major speaking position. However, how it is handled is important.
It should be coordinated quietly with a phone call between Mitt and Palin. He should publicly say that he would love to have her speak, then she should publicly say that she would rather not to allow the press to focus on the ticket.

The poll — the first survey conducted completely after Romney announced that Ryan was his vice presidential choice – shows the Romney/Ryan ticket tied with Obama/Biden at 46 percent.
But a JZ Analytics poll from a few weeks ago had Obama leading Romney by five percentage points, and most major polls also had Obama comfortably in the lead before the Ryan selection.

The government's official "estimate" of how much taxpayers will lose in the GM bailout ($25.1 billion) is off by about half, according to people who've reviewed the numbers. The government is basing that estimate on rosy scenarios about GM's future stock price (taxpayers are still holding a huge amount of GM stock), as well as GM's pension obligations (GM is figuring investments will return 8% a year!).
The real cost of the GM bailout to taxpayers will likely be more than twice the official estimate, or over $50 billion dollars. Keep that in mind when Obama says he wants to do for other American industries what he did for the auto industry!

It is long past time for us to clear out of A'stan and, in fact, the entire Middle East. We have been wasting lives and money in that region for, well, decades, with no good outcome in sight.
The entire fault lies with our civilian "leadership," which doesn't have the balls to understand what war is all about. You do not go into war with the objectives of making sure you don't hurt anyone and rebuilding whatever damage you might inadvertently cause. You go in to kick the ever-lovin' crap out of the enemy and make sure they are denied the resources to fight back.
The rot began to set in back in Korea, and has gotten worse in Vietnam, Bosnia and the Gulf wars. Tell the generals to "hang on, 'cos you're hurting people and we need to get the engineers in there to rebuild all the local shit" and you have LOST.
If we ever have another president who understands this stuff -- one who doesn't hate America and love Muzzies would be nice, too -- we can protect ourselves and our allies. We can do that better than any other country, when we have the will.

On the Palin issue, I think it's a good idea to keep her low profile at the convention. She is a symbol of 2008, and this election needs to be about kicking Obama to the curb over his craptastic last 4 years.
Don't get me wrong, I like her, and I think she has a bright political future, maybe as Senator from Alaska. But we need to get past this election, without distractions, before that should happen.
Fortunately, she seems to agree with that. She has been willing to keep a low profile on the national stage, while focusing on state races where she can do some good.

I'd been a donk strictly for the ability to vote in the primaries of the Soviet of Cleveland Heights of the Republic of Cuyahoga; rest assured in the general election there were blizzard warnings in Hell whenever I voted for a commiecrat fuckhead.

I disagree. I have serious reservations about Christie, especially if he were to run for the presidency. But the guy is one hell of a good speaker. And, he's solid on fiscal matters. This election will turn on fiscal issues, and on that score, Christie's a good man to help lead the assault on the JEF. I can see him scoring like Rudy Giuliani (another guy I have reservations about) did four years ago: I still remember fondly Giuliani's: "Community organizer. WHAT?"

I think your reservations are based on them both being former US prosecutors; ie. potentially totalitarian fuckheads with the unlimited resources to run roughshod over any fucking body that gets in their sights. That made them very well placed to oversee reforming corrupt urban shitholes like NYC post-Dinkens and the entire fucking state of New Jersey; at which they did and are doing a very good job of destroying the goons who fucked things up. But make no doubt about it: They aren't conservatives and don't need an entire country that loves freedom to run.

He's pro life and pro civil unions but anti gay marriage. More importantly, he's an effective spokesman for conservative ideas, especially in the face of union apparatchiks. In New Jersey. I think that's hard to criticize from the right.
Not a lot of daylight between him and the GOP nominee.
(For that matter, there's not a lot of daylight wherever Christie stands, period.)
