And with that, here's a Chaplin story: 

 

He's mostly forgotten now, but Jackie Vernon was a fairly successful comic during the '60s and '70s, being a perennial fixture on the Dean Martin Celebrity Roast panel.  If his name sounds familiar to you, it's because he was the voice of Frosty the Snowman in the Rankin-Bass cartoon of the same name.  As a boy, Vernon was a huge fan of Chaplin and would write him fan letters week after week, month after month and year after year, all of them having one thing in common - they were never answered.

 

Years later, Vernon, in London for a gig, learned that Chaplin was eating dinner in a nearby restaurant.  Knowing it might be the only chance he'd have to see his idol, Vernon hurried over.  Spotting Chaplin, he crossed the restaurant and held out his hand.  "Mr. Chaplin," he gushed, "please excuse me, but I had to come over and say hello.  My name is Jackie Vernon and I'm one of your biggest fans."

 

Chaplin shook Vernon's hand, but there was an odd look in his eye.  "Vernon. . . Vernon," he muttered.  Then he nodded.  "Oh, yes, Vernon!  Tell me," he asked, "why did you stop writing?"

Sure it had, the first head of the EPA was appointed by Nixon (Ruclesnot) and his first act was to ban DDT despite the recommendation by the "scientists" to leave it alone. 

So from the start the EPA abandoned "science" and replaced it with politics.

I must disagree with you here.  Throwing the Choom administration into jail and allowing bubba to give them a good rectal stretch is the only thing that will SAVE us from becoming a banana republic.  Clinton, foul POS that he was, taught the dems that they can break any law any time, and Obama learned that lesson well.  Each day he breaks the law with impunity.  The next Dem to be elected will do as much, or worse.  Only fear of punishment will keep these trash in line.  Holding public office is not "immunity" to the law.  Tossing Obastard and his co-conspirators into prison, after a trial, is the only right action.

54 I happened to see a tweet from Reince Preibus that he was going to be on the Today Show this morning.  I normally avoid that show like the plague,  but I was curious to see how he would do,  so I tuned in.

First I had to endure an interview with soft-spoken Matt Lauer questioning the evil Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.  If you are looking for "unhinged",  there's your poster girl.  I WAS surprised that after she went on this tirade about Ryan and having seen his "slash and burn" policies on the Budget Committee, Lauer pointed out that at least Ryan had an actual plan, and doesn't that give voters a choice.  She then sputtered that she had represented her disctrict for 20 years and she KNEW her constituents wouldn't go for it.  The best part was when she said he was a "really nice guy" so that is why it is "so disappointing that he has such extreme views."

Then Reince was interviewed by Savannah Guthrie,  and he was very nice and sounded rational.  She tried to back him into a corner on the "chains" comment by Biden,  asking why it wsa so offensive.  He simply said it wasn't acceptable and moved on to talking about saving Medicare. (I think this was good because while we all know Biden was talking to an aucience heavy with minorities,  if Reince had brought that up then HE would have been accused of racism.)   He did well,  especially following DWS.

Prior tot he interviews they had a story about how both sides are getting pretty dirty.  However,  the examples they gave of  Romney and Ryan were rational, patient and long-suffering type comments,  while Biden and Obama sounded nasty and angry.

Then there was a looonng story by Andrea Mitchell on Chelsea's interview,  with lots of video of Bill and Hillary while Andrea recapped her life story (which is apparently that she is the daughter of the Clintons and not much else).  Oh,  and she might go into politics.(Surprise!)

At that point,  I had done all the observing I could stomach,  so I went back to Fox.

I have no doubt that they have insurance to cover lawsuits like this.  They settle and let the insurance pay out. The premiums come from the taxpayers, but not just the local board that's settling.  They are costing all the school districts a small amount of money in the future in order to be done with the hassle.  I really think that the number of things anyone is allowed to insure against needs to be reigned in.  They have no incentive to act responsibly since lawsuits and big payouts don't even affect them directly.

This thing started as a proposed government regulation.  It did not start as a "standard" to unify the automakers.  What they have now is some auto makers are implementing and they are establishing the "standard" next month. 

And the article said, down the road there will be a requirement to have them in every vehicle.  Since there was no debate, and no law, there has been no public discussion on exactly what these things are going to do.

Will it involve the ability to live monitor or is only a "read only" after an accident like an aircraft box?

Will they be able to track where you are at real time using GPS technology via the box?

What are the consequences of someone disabling it?

These are questions that should have been answered before it was ok'd.

Re-read the rule and my comment.  Currently, the NHTSA is not requiring they be in any vehicle.  They are simply setting standards for the devices, whether or not a specific manufacturer installs them is up to the manufacturer.  If you don't want one, don't buy a car that has one.  Not everyone is doing it (yet).

Like I said, though, it is a very small step from the current rule (which is reasonable, albeit not necessary) to requiring their inclusion on all cars- and that I would oppose.  Vociferously.

Actually, I disagree.  As long as the boxes remain voluntary, then those questions don't matter because you can avoid it by simply choosing a manufacturer that doesn't install them.  Once they are no longer voluntary, those questions don't matter, because in any event they will be a violation of my 4th Amendment protections.

Maybe I'm just viewing this as a techie, but I guess I'm saying this: if you're going to have them anyway, there may as well be a standard of things like how they operate, what information they collect, how they store/format the data, etc.  That way, the people who review their recorded data (from the government to your private insurance company) don't have to keep 47 different unique formats up to date.

As long as they keep it there (and, yes, I know they won't, but they haven't tried to over-step their bounds yet), then I don't see a problem with it.  Once they do overstep those bounds, then they're in violation of the Constitution, and I'll be as vociferous as anyone in getting such an overreach barred by Congress.

The problem there is that (as I said) the standard is actually defensible.  You may not agree with the defense, but it's at least valid enough that you need to give reasons better than "I know you're planning to screw me over later."  I could probably even come up with some, if I were so motivated.

I guess I think of it like ankle monitors, or court-approved GPS monitors.  Certainly there is room for abuse, and they have been abused, but the government is not fundamentally in the wrong for using them.  And when they over-step the bounds of the Constitution, they should be slapped down for it.

The difference between the Regulator and the Barbarian, besides the Barbarian's honesty, is that the Regulator actually has a lot of at least somewhat valid authority.  That doesn't involve an axe.

Given that the NHTSA exists (it does).
Given that the NHTSA will be called upon to investigate traffic accidents (it will).
Given that there are already car companies using this technology (there are).
It then stands to reason that NHTSA would want a single standard for the technology to make their investigations easier.

Now, if you want to argue that NHTSA is, itself, unconstitutional (or, at least, extra-constitutional), then I'm right there with you.  But that's not an argument we're going to win any time soon.
