Here is an article from the Charleston paper with more details. They say the case is likely to go to the Supremes regardless of outcome. However, a favorable ruling by the 3 judge panel “may” allow it to be implemented while waiting on SCOTUS.

I'm pretty sure the other half of the backlash is going to be the animosity felt by, sorry to put it this way, low-information pro-lifers who will resent "one of their own" being attacked as he has been. So now there will be subdivision, not just between fiscal and social cons, but between social cons who are pro-life, and base their beliefs on science and logic, and those who are pro-life and base it on magic (or whatever else they want to call it).

My wife is a Baptist, and while I lived down there I ran with the Baptists. They are among my favorite people in the nation, and in all sincerity there is no group I'd rather have at my back if it all implodes.
AP and Poppin'fresh will betray their principles if all starts to crumble faster than the SoCons, to a FiCon the political divide is a math exercise.

If you let a government make moral decision for you that gives them an excuse to make all of your decisions. Just occurred to me that another reason for the choice of corn-based ethanol for fuel is that under any circumstances, it removes a lot of animal feed capacity from the agricultural system. I've used similar working to yours to defend my Libertarian leanings on social issues. Too many people forget or misunderstand that social pressure is more powerful than law in many cases. Laws so broad in wording as are needed to enforce "order" are wide enough to be wicked tools in the hands of men of ill will.

The photo they used, as well as the font size - were designed to make it appear that preazy had already won. A local talk show host read the entire piece, he believes the poll was overweighted to Philadelphia (city) voters. Even with that skew, preazy was only 3 pts ahead of Romney in the all important collar counties.

People who doubt Michigan going red are the product of low-information reporters.
The MSM thinks that the "Auto Bailout" assured a democrat victory, but they are still thinking of old, distorted view of what Michigan is. Obama bailed out the UAW, which has a much smaller presence in Michigan now. Most of the assembly plants moved out of the state 20 years ago. Component plants are widely dispersed across the country and world. Delphi employees were screwed in the bailout. There may be 20,000 UAW members left, but discount the ones that work at Ford.
Less than two years ago, the democrat that ran for governor was handpicked by the UAW, ran on the bailout and his agreement with Obama on all subjects and lost to a Romney-clone nerd by 18 points.
As the public polls begin to change their demographics to reality instead of the 2008 (plus some) R/D/I split, you'll see just how red Michigan is.

I, like you, am conflicted. Even about them just shutting up. Really, it's one thing if they're asked, or invited to speak. It's another if they just decide that we all want their opinion, or speak out "out of the blue" (a la Dixie Chicks), and decide to make it an issue.
R. Lee Ermy was known as a conservative before the Geico commercials, and he didn't exactly go looking for an opportunity to speak out. As I recall, he was invited to a specific speaking gig (where he was giving his opinion) and then asked questions about it later. Unless Geico had some clause about him not doing such things (they may, in fact. Some groups do) they didn't really have "grounds" (even thought they still had the right) to fire him.
Either way, he'll land on his feet somewhere, if he even needs to. The man ain't exactly poverty stricken.

Should have seen the long convoys of utility trucks and tree removal trucks from as far north as WV and VA heading south on 95 through FL yesterday. You are correct to say that much of the Akin fight is one of reacting to insulting and inclusive language.
The problem is that there are pretty regular outbreaks of bashing "Socons" on this blog. The attacks are straight from the liberal media playbook. "What's next? You'll tell me the earth is 6 thousand years old?" is typical. As if that were a widely held belief in "Socon" circles. Where does an attack like that come from?

He wasn't that bad, but he refused to acknowledge that Zelaya was the one who attempted the coup. He kept calling it a coup from the Honduran Supreme Court. He missed the part, IIRC, where Barky had denied entry to the Honduran mission to the UN and instead had let Zelaya's commies in to allegedly represent Honduras - which interestingly included a honduran domestic terrorist bomber from the 80s, sort of the honduran Bill Ayers.
There were some other things that Morrisey missed. I can't remember at this point. But the commenters had that situation pretty much nailed from the first day and we were the ones putting the real info into the threads - getting cites from the honduran constitution and the like.
That was such a weird episode and Barky's idiotic interpretation of the honduran constitution was beyond pathetic (so bad that not even any of his lunatic leftist buddies could agree with him). It was also when Barky gave a good signal of where he was headed as he defended Zelaya, and any single thing Zelaya wanted to do, with the argument that "he was popularly elected" and so he could do anything, constitution be damned. It was a warning shot that many ignored ... but there was so much more to ignore in the following years, anyway - warnings and crimes ...

Well that's my heartfelt view on it. Glad you agree. I decided while I was growing up poor that blind faith in any ideology or Religion using the tools of government was wrong and that the state's job was to do its job and facilitate order under our limits set by the Bill of Rights and to act as the gentlest check possible on the Free market's excess.
I've been "Community Organized" as a kid during the Reagan years and was always the little contrarian. Poverty is best ended by creating a good economy. The goal of the welfare state is not charity but enforced subservience and loyalty to one caucus.

Two things about the thermals:
--if you want the coffee to stay really really hot you can do things like put the water in the machine and then fill the carafe with hot water for a few minutes. To make the coffee really cold, you can use it like my mom did: Set it up the night before in a kitchen that's not heated in winter and only make a couple cups!
--if you don't get the lid on just right, you get hot coffee all over the kitchen. If you fill it with hot water and forget to dump the hot water out, you will also get a big mess. The lid isn't horribly difficult to get on, you just have to look at it to make sure it didn't screw on lopsided.
If you set up the machine in the morning, before you have coffee, this can be tough.

I have a SASS eligible double barrel '81 pattern right now. My main use will be to tune up my marksmanship and house defense if I am certain things are gonna get sporty. I really like the '97s slamfire capability and at 225-235 as my non running frame has expanded I am a big enough boy to handle the recoil on that.
My last absence from you guys was a harder period of working at my job until I took the summer off to get the boy squared away for school. I also decided I was going to lose the weight I had put on while the wife was deployed after I gained back the weight I lost when i starved myself. I've lost 60 pounds in the last 9 months.
If I have never thanked the morning crew in particular for your comfort and calm you imparted while she was deployed I want to say it now, "thanks."
My son is almost old enough and trustworthy enough I can get back to a real career, and I will not be around as much when i do go back to real work but I want all of you to do well.

Yeah. The Technivorm KBT-741. I love it. If you're serious about your morning coffee, get this one.
It's pricey, but its built like a tank and will last forever. Not an overly attractive machine, but it's the only one other than an espresso maker, that gets the water to the exact right temperature.
I'd also buy a Nissan thermos to use instead of the one that comes with the machine. It is far superior. The thermos was $40 on Amazon.

Sounds rough, if she ever gets on a good protocol please reconsider. We've discussed the paradigm of "nobody wins arguments with a headstone" before but controlled exposure is a positive thing in both generations life. I am NOT trying to preach, coerce, or convince you beyond your own judgement.
One of the problems in being raised by a person suffering mental illness is that your life before your living memory suffers from the distortions in the persons' bargains with reality they tell you. It is like I told the shrink when I finally went in and confronted my won fears that i was as crazy as she was, "it doesn't matter what your past really is as long as you use it to be a stable person and have tried to get the truth of the important parts from multiple sources."
I went in thinking I was schizophrenic and after the Psychiatrist and Psychologist were done with their diagnosis and initiation of treatment understood that I have PTSD and survivor's guilt. If there were magic wands and do overs I'd fix the pain and damage I did to my older sister and my younger brother in trying to act as mom's enforcer. I was pretty ruthless in trying to enforce as stable an environment as I could to the point of being a little tyrannical thug to them at times.
Were I as rich as my siblings think, I'd gift them both 3 years treatment at a mental hospital or outpatient care.

I could, but he simply ignores reality when he chooses (thus the argument "there's no money" not being enough for him). He seems to think Texas shouldn't be spending money on our roads. I'm not sure I get that.
I think part of it (the same was true for my mom for a while, but she's been seen the other side now, and is slowly moving back to sanity) is that he really was an incredibly excellent teacher. He was hand picked by his principle to do the remedial math for the kids who had failed their exit level State exam, and he had something like an 80% pass rate (which is unheard of in that demographic). And, as they say, those who are very gifted often believe themselves to be mediocre. So I think he believes all teachers are (or should be) as good as he was; and doesn't get that the biggest problem is that teachers, as a rule, kind of suck.

I don't get quite the same result, using those numbers, but they're still pretty high. But where do these probabilities come from? Some seem unrealistic, and two races are being taken for granted, when they shouldn't be. Specifically, I'm tracking IN & NV (which are being defended), instead of ME and HI (which I take as Dem).
I derive my probabilities from an admittedly arbitrary formula, but which is a function of the differential in the polls. After that, it's straightforward probability. The differentials and probabilities I currently have are: CT, +3, 62%; FL, -8, 28%; IN, +2, 58%; MA, +5, 67%; MI, -6, 31%; MO, -10, 25%; MT, +4, 64%; ND, +9; 74%; NM, -7, 29%; NV, +7, 71%; OH, 0, 50%; VA, 0, 50%; WI, +8, 72%.
That gives a 78% chance of at least 50, and a 57% chance of at least 51. Still decent odds.
To put it simply, we should take ND, NV, and WI, and have a 50% or better chance with 6 other races, so figure on at least 6 wins, bringing us up to 50+.

My sister graduated public highschool sometime before 2010(math, how does it work?), but she recently told me about her math teacher.
The teacher would show up every day to AP math, write the numbers of problems they should try, then read a newspaper. When prompted to teach, she replies "The only way you can learn this is to do the problems".
She never gave homework, or graded anything, or helped.
The end of the semester, she gave a "final" to the class. She told them to write out the *glossary* from the textbook, by hand, with an *example* of each entry in the glossary. That was 100% of the class grade.
Only one student in the class did it. The rest of the students got a C, because she couldn't possibly fail everyone in the class.
Admin's response? "Well.... she's tenured. Our hands are tied"

The normal procedure, at least in the SE, is for neighboring utilities to pre-stage line crews just out side the expected strike zone of the hurricane. That allows them to rapidly respond to downed lines.
FL would get help from utilities in Al, GA, SC, and maybe NC since the utilities in SC are also NC. Pooling resources like this allows them to cut back on the number of line crews that are maintained year round.
They also call for volunteers throughout the company to man the phone banks for reported outages.
But all of this is dependent on NOAA doing their job in accurately predicting the path and intensity of the storm.

I would avoid the tactical pistol grip shotguns. Much harder to control. Go for a traditional model, which you can also use for other things like hunting, clays, etc. My choice right now would be the Franchi Affinity, which uses recoil to autoload instead of gas action. This makes it much easier to clean and maintain.

We quit clearing trees as a prophylactic measure (at least in the city). We found it was cheaper to just let the trees take the line down and then go fix it.
Of course that means slightly more down time for the customers.

Probably not what you're looking for as a first shotgun. But my first shotgun was a used 1960s vintage Ithaca Featherlight that is a great shooter. The only shotgun I shoot better with is my fathers 12ga dbl barrel overunder Sears. Which is also cool because It is the Ted Williams edition.

Probability of the GOP winning 6 of these races is: 76.6%
Having said that, your odds are based off pure polling and ignore other factors. For example, in Wisconsin a Republican former Governor holds an 8 point lead in a traditionally blue state. That isn't a 72% chance of winning, it's 100%. Missouri is at best 10% only to account for the fact Akin might drop out, if he stays in it is 0%. Hawaii isn't 0%, because it is Lingle running for Senate and she was a popular Governor. Brown holding a 6 point lead in MA makes his odds higher than the polling, because MA is a heavy Dem state.
So we can argue about what the correct odds to apply are. I'm standing by my base set of assumptions, but I'm happy to discuss changes as things happen.
Remember, I pulled the original list from CAC's post. I've been adjusting them a bit, but I don't have any real argument with the logic behind them.

I see well that is rather moral of you. Everybody deserves somebody who values and respects them, it would be nice if fate and time allowed more people to find each other. You have a nice personality and know who you are, things'll work out.
I regret not being more willing to see things from my ex's point of view even though I hated her in a lot of ways by the end. After reflection, I think I could have tolerated the long periods of a lack of carnal interest in me so long as she had kept her adultery limited to her own gender. Not being a stereotypical redneck in "as long as I could watch or join in" either.
The few times I've woken up in a multiple girl tangle in my life the pain and awkwardness felt by all involved was not worth the drunken hazed fun.
Partners have needs, and a willingness to trust your partner not to indulge them to the point of humiliation is a necessity in this day and age.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff's spokesman Greg Phares says Officer Brian Harrision was escorting a funeral procession Friday when he pulled Temple over and wrote him a ticket for breaking into the procession. According to Phares, that's when Temple attacked Harrison. Police say Perry Stevens was walking outside of the Auto Zone on Greenwell Springs Road when he heard Harrison yelling for help. Harrison was reportedly on his back with Temple on top of him. That's when Stevens went to his car and grabbed his .45 caliber pistol.
According to Col. Greg Phares, "[Mr. Stevens] orders Mr. Temple to stop and get off the officer. The verbal commands are ignored and Mr. Stevens fires four shots, all of which struck Mr. Temple."
Perry Stevens fired four shots into Temple's torso. Officer Harrison had already fired one shot into Temple's abdomen. With Temple still struggling with the officer, Perry continued to advance toward the scuffle.

Police are calling the shooting death justified. Perry Stevens has a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Col. Phares would not give out any more details relating to the shooting. Both Phares and Baton Rouge Police Chief Jeff LeDuff stopped short of crediting Stevens with saving the officer's life. LeDuff says the entire incident is unfortunate.
"I spoke with his father at the scene briefly," said LeDuff. "I think this is a tragic situation all around."

OK. I presume you're not simply using "the binomial equation", which would imply that there are only two probabilities, because your answer comes close to mine. The probabilities I gave were rounded, so that probably explains the difference between the 76.6% and 78% (which itself was rounded down from 78.2%).
The 100% for WI seems unrealistic, but no biggie - I also have a big number. The real difference would be in IN, MT and NV. IIRC, CAC simply assumed the R states being defended would be kept, but I looked at the polls and IN, especially, only showed a 2 pt margin - we should hardly presume an automatic win there. MT has only a 4 pt lead, so 90% seems a stretch there. NV has a 7 pt lead, so the odds seem good, but 100% seems high.
I tend to use the Rasmussen numbers, unless they're too old, because I heard they do "likely voters", and are less likely to oversample Dems. I did these pretty recently, but there could be newer polls I don't know about.
I thought CAC had written off CT, but the latest poll put us ahead, so it seems like that should be at least a 50/50 shot.

My daughter is two-and-a-half and we have a hard time finding clothes for her. I'm lucky that one of the ladies at church has a granddaughter two years older and gives me lots of clothes. They're sweet little girl dresses and such.

You might be amused to hear that it happens at "the other end" as well. Ny ex-sister-in-law once reported that somebody gave her an attitude when she was in a grocery check-out line, for having four kids (the idea being that it was too many).
In hindsight, that sort of seems like poetic justice, because she's something of a liberal asshole, who undoubtedly doesn't hesitate to lecture nonsense to total strangers about things that are none of her goddamn business, either.

I've been modifying CACs numbers with new polling, and upgraded CT from 10% to 40% based on the recent polling. Which frankly I think is going to be a trend in all the races, polling is going to improve for the GOP.
I'm using the binomial equation for each of the 14 possible outcomes, then totaling the odds of all results above the appropriate threshhold. The total for all 14 results equals 1. If I have some time I could expand the model to account for additional races in IN and NV while keeping HI and ME in the mix. Since those a GOP held, then we would need to win 6 to be certain of an outright win (only 5 if three of the six are IN, NV, and MA).
I'll see what I can do, might as well get the model as accurate as possible.

It must have been in VA; I forget if it was VA Beach, or after they moved to the DC area. The kids are biracial, so one could read some racism into it you wanted to, but I don't think that sort of thing was unusual anywhere they ever lived. I think it was more of a Lefty, "How dare you consume twice the normal amount of resources" thing.
As it was, they adopted two, and about when the second one showed up it turned out that she could get pregnant after all. I guess they figured lightning wouldn't strike twice after that, or something, but then it did. So they didn't really even set out to have that many.

I'm not really following this, but it seems like your answers are coming out reasonably, so I presume it's OK. I'm just convolving the 13 independent random variables on an Excel spreadsheet. It would be easy to add another couple, but I think the polls for HI and ME were just terrible.
The main thing is to get that read of how the various probabilities, even if they're not perfect, fold into the combined distribution, and it sounds like you have that.

The scientists took an off-the-shelf Emotiv brain-computer interface, a device that costs around $299, which allows users to interact with their computers by thought.
The scientists then sat their subjects in front of a computer screen and showed them images of banks, people, and PIN numbers. They then tracked the readings coming off of the brain, specifically the P300 signal.

I think the Secret Service is already investigating. That was the report this morning anyway. It made news in Philly because the same guy who put up that page also put one up in support of two suspects under arrest for killing a Philly cop two weeks ago.

Since the Goats an auto with GMs we don't recognize 75 as avg. highway speed now gears it turns way too many revs and I'm lucky if I see 19mpg. OTOH go from .5 on the pedal to 2 and it steps around no fuss.

The GTO didn't sell well here in America, but I would love to have one, they look like loads of fun to drive and they'd actually be comfortable as a daily driver

Someone here posited that this happens because most trucks have capped speeds anymore. Also in hilly country you've got to get around when you can. Thirdly beware in that I've seen truck groups hold up hot foots and let them loose right into a speed trap.

Not just rebadged, different sheet metal, left hand drive (grr, not clearing the AC hi pressure line liquid line enough so it wears thru on the @#$%^&* steering column), gas tank in the trunk vs. Pinto splodulation legal in AUS. They sold all they made. It was always a limited run due to CAFE.
And yes it's a lot of fun. Pretty comfortable, a little small for a big-ass old guy like I've become. Had to Jam my sis's giant suitcase into the trunk the other day.
Damn thing needs $$ in fresh suspension bushings up front @58k and something has gone wonky in the back. I suspect it's the differential.

Eh I don't want to slime all truckers because some of them are great guys. Once I was going across Rt 90 in New York and this one trucker was going just behind me at about 75 for at least a hundred miles, passing cars in tandem. I figured he had a fuzz buster and would slow down if it started beeping so it was a win/win. Finally I had to get off to get gas and when I looked over at him when I was on the exit ramp to the service stop, he waved to me.

Not really. Bribes at the lower levels aren't quasi-officially accepted as income replacements as they are in places like India or Italy. If low level employees take $20 for moving your form to the top of the pile here, they get fired.
Low paid public officials in a pervasive bribe economy actually enhance the fairness of government in the sense that people who place more demands on the system have to actually pay for it, while low demand people don't. Here, everyone winds up paying premium prices via excessive employee salary, both low and high demand alike.

My guess is, they'll run a write in candidate after the Convention and try and force Akin out before Sept 25. Even if it doesn't work, I'd rather Akin lose by 40 points and be hundreds of thousands in debt than lose by 12 points uncontested.
At least the GOP sends the signal that we're not going to tolerate the wingnut caucus anymore and Akin becomes a pariah for the rest of his life.

I have a technical job at a tv station (yes, everyone there still supports O) and we have a new crop of interns in. They dress like they are the Kardashians. Short, short skirts, sleeveless dresses, sun dresses, sandals, more makeup than the anchors. It's bizarre. Like no one taught them what to wear at work. FYI, depending on your shift, the dress code is "business casual" or "casual slob" if it's the weekend. These girls look like they're going clubbing.
