— Gabriel Malor Happy Wednesday.
Late start for me today, so I didn't have a chance to look at the news yet. Maybe Vic'll have something.

Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, August 29, 2012. On this day in 1786 ShayÂ’s rebellion began in MA. Following the Revolutionary war European merchants started demanding all payments for good be made in hard currency (gold and silver). In addition, the State of MA demanded tax payments in gold and silver. The farmers in Central and Western MA often dealt in barter since there was no hard currency. When the farmers could not pay their taxes in gold or silver their farms and homes were confiscated by the government through the courts. Add on top of that that most of them were owed back pay from the war which they had been unable to collect and you get a lot of discontent. This rebellion was the one that caused Thomas JeffersonÂ’s remark regarding the Tree of Liberty and its need for watering.

You missed a couple of neat things.
1) John Boehner was doing his Dean Martin impersonation.
2) Nikki Haley was off the hook.
3) Ann Romney is a classy lady.
4) With proper handling and love, Chris Christie can be tamed without needing ritual sacrifice.

Hear me out. These storms are a fact of life in the Gulf. We had a bad storm that unfortunately took lives. So we rebuilt levees in New Orleans using about $14 billion which are still vulnerable to a Category 1 storm? Wasn't moving people permanently out of areas vulnerable to these Cat 1 or 2 storms the responsible thing to do? Or will we just simply put their lives and property in danger every year during hurricane season?

No, wait, I didn't miss it. At all.
It's one thing to vote against that treasonous doper Bark Obama, quite another to to sit through convention speeches that are, after all, like every convention speech ever presented. "We good, they bad! We have a visionnnnnn!"
Add to that the blatant horseshit from the media -- they no longer even try to present actual news without throwing in a plug for the Black Jesus -- and I'm far more interested in watching the 279th rerun of "Pawn Stars."

The first 6 words were the most crucial in the story. This was an entirely preventable thing, had proper justice been meted out to the slime. But no - the US is committed to the slap-on-the-wrist style of justice the libtards have saddled us with. So, we have this kind of thing.
Our failure to dole out harsh (meaning fair) justice is killing this country. The only thing keeping crime from getting even worse is the fact that the main producers of new criminals have aborted so many of their own babies.
As far as I'm concerned, we only need 3 types of punishment. 1. Executions. 2. Public lashing/humiliation. 3. Fines/economic penalties. This last one includes selling people into indentured servitude if they commit property crimes too great for them to repay. Instead we have the joke of prisons - where we send unskilled thugs to receive training in how to become career criminals, and insure that they go from social misfits to full-on psychopaths.

I didn't get a chance to hear her whole speech, but what I did struck me as very effective, especially if this was your first introduction to her. I know there are people on the left who can't be swayed from their assumptions that all Republicans are evil, who only want to enrich themselves on the backs of the little people, but not all of them think that way. Last night had to have moved a number of them, those people who just want competent leadership, and a reason to expect government to not make their lives worse.

Markets in Europe fell mildly on Wednesday, but traders were cautious to make bets as they waited to hear more on the Federal Reserve's and European Central Bank's monetary-policy plans.
EUrope is probably going berzerk wanting QE3 since they consider it an understood fait accompli that it will be a support of their currency woes.

It's all about emotion. People are committed to the absurd notion that N.O. is a city worthy of preservation. The history of the place is one of bad compromises couple with shocking corruption. We'd be better off if the place were bulldozed into the gulf. But no - it will not be so. Instead, in order to pacify the natives, a large portion of whom have no clue that there is a world outside their cesspool slum, we keep trying to shore up that lost cause.

I liked the small business people, who were sincere and inspiring to me (I started a very small business myself). I was inspired by Mia Love's story. Loved hearing Governor Walker. Ann Romney was surprising in both content and delivery, which were excellent. Christie was excellent as well.
Since the networks think their opinions are more important than actually broadcasting the speeches, I just decided to gowith C-SPAN, thereby keeping myself from throwing a brick through the television after Juan Williams asinine comment.

And for those of you who didn't watch last night....I came away from it absolutely adoring Ann Romney. She was wonderful, charming, beautiful and engaging. You'd think she spent her whole life speaking before large crowds. She didn't flinch once.
Christie was very good. Nikki Haley was terrific. Cruz was impressive. After a rather dull beginning of the evening, the ending speakers really put a jolt into the night. Looking forward to tonight.

And that's why I watch/listen to the convention. They don't tell people like us anything we didn't already know about policy, but they give you a sense of how they (and yes, their spouses too) do in persuading crowds, and in turn of how they will sell in the country at large. Based on last night, we're in very good shape. Ann Romney's goal was to humanize Mitt. She succeeded.

Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Thanks, everyone, for your help yesterday. If you missed it, I finally did manage to post a story about the ‘suicide’ of Jean Harlow’s husband, Paul Bern, somewhere towards the end of yesterday’s morning headline thread.
I got requests for stories about Clark Gable, Ronald Colman and Lee Marvin. I don’t know any Colmans – though I will look for some – but here’s one Gable, one co-starring Lee Marvin and one special guest star. First up:
Clark Gable: The “King” got his MGM contract on the strength of his performance in 1931’s The Secret Six, where he co-starred with Harlow, Wallace Beery* and Robert Bellamy. One night, Bellamy was eating in a Hollywood restaurant when Gable walked by and asked to join him. They ate and chatted for a while, when Gable finally asked, “What do you think of this thing out here?”
“I don’t know,” Bellamy responded. “I’ve just come out. Secret Six is the first thing I’ve done."
“I just got here, too,” Gable laughed, “and already they paid me eleven thousand dollars to be in a Bill Boyd Western. Eleven thousand! No actor’s worth that!” He paused for a while, then leaned across the table. “I got myself a room at the Castle Argyle over on Vine Street. And I bought a second-hand Ford,” he confessed. “But I’m not buying anything you can’t put on the Santa Fe Chief because this isn’t going to last.”
Our next story co-stars Lee Marvin:
Once while driving together, Marvin and Gary Cooper stopped for gas. Cooper gave the attendant a ten dollar check to pay for it. “I’m going to frame this!” the attendant exclaimed.
A few miles down the road, Marvin asked, “How many of your checks ever come back to the bank?”
A few miles more and Cooper answered, “About one in ten.”
And introducing our special guest star,
Jimmy Durante: For one episode of his TV show, Durante’s guest was the divinely cold Greer Garson, and Durante was on pins and needles making sure everyone treated her properly. “Youse guys, remember dat she’s a poifect lady!” he warned them.
So Garson arrived, to due respect, and she and Durante began rehearsing. “Foist I say dis and dat gets a laugh,” Durante instructed. “Den you say dis, and dat gets a laugh.”
“But what if they don’t laugh?” asked Garson.
“Den we both go down the terlet,” Durante sighed.
And thatÂ’s it for today. Feel free to ask me for stories about your fave-rave Golden Age stars and IÂ’ll do my best. But now that I know how to post longer stories, IÂ’m preempting this Friday for me; that will be my promised kid-who-could-have-slept-with-Jean-Harlow story.
Hope you all have a wonderful day.
*Beery was a nasty, dirty, drunk asshole who routinely hurt people (he's long been considered the man who beat former Stooge leader Ted Healy to death). For fun, he raped Gloria Swanson on their wedding night. Charming fella.

I heard her speech. Given the context, the contrary "unreal" was the "story book" fairy tale. What crossed my mind when Ann Romney brought up "story books don't mention MS/cancer hardship" was that fairy tales really do. Cinderella, for instance, dealt with injustice and degradation. And scriptural, Ruth forfeited her heritage to follow her husband and emigrate to join the Hebrew culture of faith even after being widowed. But I wasn't dwelling on the phrase.
I was watching her finger pointing from the podium that needs altering before SNL mocks it.
As for her claim, "You can trust Mitt," remember Jeremiah 17:5. The one phrase that really irked me was her saying that Mitt would work extra hard so that we don't have to work so hard.
Defeat the SCOAMFT. And don't be afraid to tell it like it is. Pathetic "nice guy" Obama squirms, squealing "sometimes they just plain fib." Boohoohoo.
I really enjoyed Christi's speech, and was pleasantly surprised. No wonder his affect is larger than life; he really strikes home across a large spectrum of Americans. Ann took offense, but shouldn't have shown being miffed that love took the backseat to respect. It takes two to tango, after all.

I'm licensed for Shotguns and Rifles in NY from the time I lived there so I know from NY.
If NY wants to burden it's gun manufacturers let them, the manufacturers will either comply or leave. They will pass the costs to the consumer. The market will decide.
But we all know that once one manufacturer knuckles under it will soon be the new thing gun grabbers will push for across the country.
And as you said it's easily defeated by those who do not follow the thousands of laws that are already on the books.
Because you know it will be a crime to remove or deface the pin, nothing will have been accomplished except raising the price of arms.

1. Arkansas....2. Indiana....3.Kentucky....4.Michigan....5.Mississippi (you just know poor old Mississippi HAD to be on the list)....6.Missouri....7. Nevada
8. Oklahoma....9. Tennessee....10. West Virginia
Vic says these lists are pure shit. I agree. Pure left-wing crap. They only put Michigan on the list because EVERYBODY knows that state is hurting.

Didn't get to watch a lot of the convention last night due to working on the house. Had it on but the sound was off. It's actually fairly interesting to just watch sometimes. Puts the focus on people's mannerisms, their comfort and ease at being in front of crowds.
Haley looked like she killed. I didn't realize it was Cruz that worked the stage, but visually, I LOVED it. I did get to listen to most of Mrs. Romney's and Christie's speeches. Both did very very well. I thought Christie's theme early of love and respect was dead on. And I thought his emphasis on American greatness and fortitude (stand with me and I'll stand with you; it's time to make the hard decisions) was perfect.

Yes but your reason for IN being "bad" is vastly different than the reason these stupid top 10 lists use. Normally with the MFM any State that is heavy into socialistic policies is always at the top of the lists and the States that are least socialistic are at the bottom.
That is unless the State is in the South, and then it doesn't matter what they are they are automatically at the bottom.

Two local polls yesterday of likely voters with large samples showed a tie between Mandel and Brown in Ohio. I'm moving the odds of picking up that seat to 50%.
I'm still carrying the odds of winning WI, MT, NE, and ND at 100%, per CAC's proclamation 2 days ago.
Current probability with take the Senate with at least 51 seats: 94.9%
Most likely outcome at 20.3%: Winning 9 of the contested seats

I wouldn't trust anyone who want special privileges for his ancestral group. They sure as hell aren't anyone who'd be of benefit to the GOP. I'm sure there are about 10 million people in the Ukraine who'd love to move here and become Americans. But we could never absorb such a deluge without severe consequences. The fact that my ancestors originated there doesn't make me believe they're any more deserving than anywhere else when it come to immigration.

Some outstanding speeches last night. Artur Davis, Nikki Haley, Ann Romney, and Chris Christie all knocked it out of the park. Each of them had their own theme and style that they brought, so there was no repetition. Ted Cruz was also good, speaking without note, a prompter, or even a podium. I've seen him give a speech like that before. He will go right into the audience and speak from inside the crowd.
Also, things that make you go Hmmmm: Just announced that Hillary is skipping the Dem convention for the first time since 1968.

It's not like "people" do. It's like the media does. More importantly, they would love to pin this on the EEEEVIL George Bush (and they're already trying).
Already the story is OH NOES! Levees have already been breached "near New Orleans."
Of course, by "breached" they mean "topped" (which is something different) and by "near New Orleans" they mean a completely different parish and not even a suburb of NO. But what they want you to believe is that the Evil Emperor Bush and his henchman Darth Cheney hated the people of LA so much, that they purposely built flawed levees, even after Katrina.

Maine really is a lovely state, so long as you travel along the coast or make your way into the wooded areas to the north and east. Central Maine is... well... *searching for word* an eyesore. And I say that with fondness, because most of New England is lovely, but every state has it's "eyesore" regions where the mills and manufacturing drove the economy in the early industrial era. It's just that Maine's never really rehabbed those areas. At least, not that I've seen. But I leave it to our resident Mainers to set me straight.
Provided they can talk through their missing teeth.

When popular Tea Party candidate Ted Cruz, the GOP nominee for Senate, took the stage, MSNBC cut away from the Republican National Convention and the Hispanic Republican from TexasÂ’ speech.
MSNBC stayed on commercial through former Democratic Rep. Artur DavisÂ’ speech, as well. Davis, who recently became a Republican, is black.
Then, when Puerto Rican Governor Luis Fortuno’s wife Luce’ Vela Fortuño took the stage minutes later, MSNBC hosts Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews opted to talk over the First Lady’s speech.
And Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval? Noticeably missing from MSNBC, too.
Mia Love, a black candidate for Congress in Utah, was also ignored by MSNBC.

Very interesting article and response about Michigan polls.
Nate Silver at the NY Times wrote an article cutting down two recent polls out of Foster McCollum White Baydoun and Mitchell Research, which showed Mitt Romney well ahead of Obama. Nate complained that the weighting was flawed (something he never questions in Obama-friendly polls), saying there was too few blacks and young voters used.
Eric Foster, President of Foster McCollum White & Associates, replies in the comment section explaining how the numbers were established. Steve Mitchell, president of Mitchell Research, defended his numbers to Silver also. Both Mitchell and Foster have excellent records and specialize in Michigan polling.
Nate seems to think the fast and dirty PPP polls of adults are fine to accept at face value, but serious likely voter surveys by experts in the state are "outliers".

The comment I was going to add was that I know a family (two thirty-somethings with five kids now, but at the time they had two) who fled to Ohio after Katrina to stay with family. They are the in-laws of a good friend of mine. Well, that friend and her family and many of their friends gathered money for them and helped them move into a house owned by her husband's grandmother (the wife of the couple is his sister). My friend drove the guy to job interviews until he landed one. Well, about a year later she found their blog online and discovered he had written terrible things about her, her husband (his wife's brother) and the community (it was a small town, so the guy ranted on and on about how they were uneducated rednecks, how he couldn't wait to get back to the more enlightened New Orleans, etc.). After that she and her family had nothing to do with them.
Fast forward to today. They never moved back because they continue to live in the wife's grandmother's house, rent-free. Last month the city told them they would be fined $500 if they didn't mow and weed their lawn, so they can't even be bothered to maintain the free house they live in. They still refer to themselves as "Katrina survivors."
