— Gabriel Malor Happy Friday.
I couldn't resist piling on media fact checkers yesterday.
Yahoo News reports that there is a planned Reagan hologram, it just wasn't ready in time for the convention.
DOD is threatening to sue the author of an UBL raid book for breaching non-disclosure rules.

The Boarding House
Award-winning author Sharon Sala brings emotional intensity to her unforgettable novel that follows Ellie Wayne, a young woman damaged by a sexually abusive father and mentally fragile mother. Ellie believes her future holds only danger and shame, but one man might be able to help her hope for something more.
And thatÂ’s it for today. The non-hurricane and convention wrap up are sucking all the O2 out of the news this morning.

1) they have a LOT of kids and grand-kids. I loved that Mrs. Ryan had to stop waving and go grab one of her wayward sons who was chasing balloons into the audience.
2) What a ridiculously good-looking ticket. Really. It looked like a GQ photoshoot. If they were auditioning for a movie, the director would say it was too obvious.

I worked at the State Dept. for 11 years (federal contractor). The Diversity Officer's statements are nothing new. I was hearing that bs all the time. It stunned me at first, then I learned how to gently mocked it. I liked my job and didn't want to get fired. Hell hath no fury then a bureaucrat scorned.

Clint Eastwood can take the criticism because he's a man, unlike the weenies on SNL. And their snark isn't going to damage Clint's career in the movie business. He said so long as the work is enjoyable, he'll keep working. And his flicks are wonderful expressions of the world according to Eastwood, NOT HOLLYWOOD.

Good morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Didn't see Mitt's speech, but heard parts of it on the radio this morning. I wonder if the SCOAMF can tamp down his butt-hurt and rage long enough to give a decent speech, or will he go into full Reverend Wright mode? I do so hope they go Wellstone.
Anyway, I promised you a Jean Harlow story. This is a long one that I've condensed from Jesse Lasky Jr's wonderful memoir Whatever Happened To Hollywood? So grab an adult beverage of your choice and settle back. . .
The heroine of our story is the delicious Jean Harlow, with whom weÂ’ve had a couple of brief encounters this week. The hero is Jesse Lasky, Jr., son of one of the founders of Paramount Pictures.
It seems that, in the early 1930’s, Jesse and his dad had crossed the border to sinful Agua Caliente for a little R&R. Jesse Senior was still a powerful producer, though the knives in his back were beginning to take their toll, while Jesse Junior was employed at the Fox studio as a “reader” – the bottom of the totem pole, a drudge assigned to look at unproduced plays, meandering essays and hopeless books in order to find something – anything – that might be turned into a movie.
Off the two went to the golf course, only to find themselves stuck behind a dawdling twosome. An irritated Senior went up to ask permission to play through, only to find that the players were Harlow and her stepfather, Marino Bello. Bello suggested they make up a foursome, and so they did, Junior relating with wonder that, in the presence of the intoxicating Miss Harlow, “my normally erratic golf game settled into a golden groove. Hooks, slices vanished; drives rocketed straight down the fairway. Everything was working. I felt inspired. I was!”
That night, Jesse ran into Harlow at the casino and watched her play craps. Dazzled by her white satin gown cut to the navel (and let me just remind you Harlow was famous for wearing nothing under her gowns), he bet what she did and won a sizeable amount of money.
“You roll great dice,” said Jesse. “You play good golf,” Harlow replied. “Perhaps we could have a game when we get back to town. That is, if you don’t mind playing with an old lady” (Harlow was 23 at the time). She suggested they meet the following Saturday at 2 o’clock at the Riviera Country Club.
But when Saturday came, Jesse was doubtful. “Of course Harlow wouldn’t remember a casual date, carelessly made in the heat of a weekend of fun and fancy. Even I couldn’t believe that the most important star in Hollywood would date a nonentity, the lowest reader in the least of filmland’s studios.” So, rather than look like a fool, he went to his office and began plowing through work.
Two o’clock came and went. The phone jingled. “Not very nice of you to stand up an old lady!” came the low, feminine voice.
“Jean? Is it really Jean Harlow?”
“Uh huh,” Harlow said flatly. “Start explaining.”
“My God,” Jesse stammered, “I didn’t dream that you’d really – that you’d actually – be there. At the club. I mean, for golf!”
She was, of course. So Jesse hightailed it out of the office to the club, met Harlow for a round. . .and, well, one date led to another and another, and pretty soon the two of them became something of an item. For weeks, they went everywhere together, enjoying each other’s company, though Jesse admitted, “I dared to hold her hand and kiss her hello and goodbye. I didn’t conceive of venturing further. Perhaps that was my attraction. Everything about me seemed to amuse her.”
It’s hard to keep a secret in Hollywood, and soon the gossip that Jesse and Jean were a twosome reached the ears of Jesse’s boss at Fox, who instantly promoted him to personal assistant, with an office, a secretary and a salary of $250 a week. And it wasn’t just the boss who treated Jesse with newfound respect. People who didn’t know he was alive boasted of being old friends. Virtual strangers slapped him on the back – “Jess, old fellow! How are you? Say, we’re throwing a party tonight. Why don’t you come? And. . .bring a guest, too.”
Then, one day, it all ended.
Everything had begun nicely enough. Jesse picked Harlow up – “Her perfume was so strong it made me reel. She was wearing one of her Adrian-designed white dresses, which set off the silver-platinum hair. ‘You never looked more beautiful,’ I told her. She took the compliment in stride. ‘We’ll have fun. I want to have a lot of fun tonight.’”
Off they went to a swanky Beverly Hills bistro for dinner, dancing and drinks – lots and lots of drinks. By the time the two of them got back to Harlow’s house, she was complaining of a slight headache. Jesse made to leave, but she stopped him.
“I am now about to read the corniest line in movie history,” she said. “Come up with me while I change into something comfortable.”
Up they went to her bedroom. Jean stepped into her dressing room. Now, letÂ’s let Jesse tell us the rest of the story:
“She stepped into the dressing room, leaving the door open. In the mirrors, white flesh, sheer silk, flashing. I waited.
‘Somebody’s got loose with a hammer in my head. Think I should lie down. Why don’t you relax. Stay awhile.’
But instead I hurried out of the room – to return in a moment. ‘Got something for you,’ I called through the door.
‘Nearly ready.’ She came out of the dressing room in a fantastic peach-colored negligee.
I handed her two aspirin and a glass of water. The glass was pink and silver.
‘How old are you, Jesse?’
‘Twenty-two.’
She climbed into the vast bed. On the floor sprawled pages of the script for her next picture, Bombshell.
‘When I was sixteen I was married,’ she said. ‘My first husband couldn’t stand me wanting to work in pictures. I guess he was jealous of them. Why are all men jealous?’
‘Lack of confidence, maybe. Like being – too tall or – my father always called me Shortie.’
‘I wouldn’t have noticed,’ she said kindly.
I noticed the aspirin were still on the bedside table. ‘How’s your head? Would you like me to read you to sleep?’
She looked at me a long moment. ‘If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s reading in bed. Be a good boy and go home.’
The moment had passed when I might have been any other kind of boy.
Next day I phoned Jean at her studio dressing-room to check on the time for our usual evening date. The colored maid who’d been with her for years said she couldn’t speak to me. Another phone call brought the same answer. And another and another. “Couldn’t” had obviously become “wouldn’t.” By the tenth phone call I knew it was over; Jean Harlow wouldn’t be seeing me again.”
And we fade out on a sadder but wiser Jesse Lasky.
Hope you all have a wonderful day. See you on Tuesday.

Contrast that with the Obama's leeching salaries from public funds, squandering public tax funds on presidential never ending vacations. There must be an end to Obama's spending of my tax funds for his pleasures.
You won't see Mitt skipping out from the Oval Office responsibilities in order to play another round of golf or fly off on another vacation. And who'd be surprised to find that Romney doesn't accept the POTUS salary while in office? According to his peers, Mitt's the first one to work and very much the active manager of all concerned. /Perhaps it's micromanaging that would be his Achilles heel.

This is actually a great point, and one that people forget when talking about Reagan. What struck me last night was how much Romney "sounded" like Reagan. It was the same inflections, the same pacing. Everyone wants to remember Reagan's speeches as barn burning, take no prisoners, tours de force. But they weren't. He was called The Great Communicator, because he could sound reasonable and nice while explaining to you how the world really works.
Understand, I'm not saying Romney is Reagan, but he is the closest to Reagan's oratory style I have heard. At least last night.

But at least now our side is seemingly willing to take on the entrenched unions and take direct aim at their own interests at the expense of the children.
Last night was really great. Not a barn burner, but really great. What sticks out in my mind the most was the personal aspect of Mitt Romney, the man. I was extremely touched by the older couple and the woman who came out and gave testament to their own tragedies and how Mitt selflessly helped them. Can anyone even remotely imagine Obama doing such a thing...without cameras rolling or a political advantage for him somehow? I can't.
Likewise, as a chick, I was really touched by what comes across as a very, very loving family. I got teary-eyed when Ann and Mitt talked about her MS diagnosis. The love they feel for each other was very touching, and will not be lost by women who saw that. It was the humanization of Mitt and I think it worked beautifully.

There's a cheerful niceness about the tone which you do NOT get from Obama. Next week we will get the angry, arrogant lecturing we have been hearing for 4 years. He will be determined to "show" Romney that he is a better speaker, and it will cause him to try too hard.
And we will also get a speech from Michelle, and she will be angry as usual.
The debates will be mostly about whether anyone wants to listen to the Obamas for another 4 years. I think we win that contest.

Reagan was an accomplished actor. Reagan's oratory remains outstanding. Romney's message is what sets Romney apart, not his delivery. What the two share in common is their belief in American optimism leading the way through hard work to the best of times from the worst of times.
But I don't care to judge a politician on his charisma. Like Jerry Doyle says, I don't want my accountant to be the coolest guy evah, but to be the best accountant ever. I don't care if my POTUS is a stick in the mud so long as he's defending and upholding the US Constitutional Government, my rights and Liberty.

I have no doubt it will be Angry Obama. I think the class warfare, the dirty lies, the sarcastic tone will be full metal jacket. It won't be an uplifting convention. It won't focus on the goodness of America. Hell, I'll eat my shoes if they even say the Pledge of Allegiance, wave the flag or sing our anthem. They'll try to wrap it in an "all in this together, sacrificin'" blanket. But under the thin surface, it will be very vicious. It's who they are.

For example, I was certain that Tipper Gore would divorce Al eventually. I believe he was an emotionally abusive, if not physically abusive, husband. And why would I say this?
Watching the convention coverage in 2000 I saw the film introducing the Gores to the nation. (This was shown in its entirety on C-SPAN, my preferred channel for conventions). They were touring the house in Tennessee and Al made a point (despite Tipper's protestations) of showing a self-portrait Tipper had painted of herself when she was very pregnant. (I actually believe this was done when she was under treatment for Depression.) So there I sat, looking at a picture of nude, pregnant Tipper Gore.
And I thought that 1. A woman who paints herself like that is having serious mental problems. 2. A husband who has the picture hanging in the HALLWAY where children and grandchildren can see it has a mental problem as well. and 3. A guy who insists on showing that on national television is out to humiliate the wife , which he did.
When you coupled that with the over-the-top, man-handling kiss he gave her on the convention stage and I came to the conclusion he should be allowed nowhere near the Oval Office. I am glad she divorced him.
Lots of people here bitch about George Bush, but I consider his election divine intervention, protecting us from a Gore presidency.

Yup. Spot on. Al's other problem is of overriding intellectual vanity, a house built on very loose sand.
The way he tried to physically cow Bush the younger is a tell of his insecurity and bullying nature. Add in his pathetic attempt at a Ronald Reagan impersonation and he may as well have held up a Looney Tunes sign saying "u screwball". Rubio is, maybe, a good guy. Maybe the official meme for the Repubs is to try to shoot the enemy down in a kindly way, as Bull Halsey (I think) said.
I'm not a good guy. I think Bark Obama is a treasonous, worthless little fuck who not only never built anything, but has never done an honest day's work in his entire affirmative-action life. I think Choom Boy is so consumed by hate for the nation that he will do anything to destroy it. In short, if not protected by his skin color (and political affiliation), he would be in a homeless shelter somewhere, wearing his "Che" t-shirt and ranting drunkenly about being oppressed by The Man. Or he would be under indictment for a number of crimes he has committed in the last four years.
So I'm saying he's a bad guy, and deserves punishment, not adoration or even consideration.

Your post is, as are many of my own, a good example of why despite the fact he was not my first or second choice at the start of this cycle Mitt Romney is the correct choice for this race at this time. It is easy due to the inherent and unarguable inequity in media coverage and expected civility between the party's to want to paint one's face with the blood the lashing if their barbed tongues draw flash a predator's smile and cry havoc unleashing the dogs of war, but an America trained to treat the President as a Special Needs child/idiot savant would recoil form Barack being treated as his character merits. Mitt, whether he feels the same anger as many of us on the right or not, has the professionalism to make the sale in the face of adverse winds.
We are truly sending our best, and the media and democrats will do their worst.

The line of the night was when Rubio said that his dad stood behind the bar in the back of the room so that he could stand at the lecturn in the front of the room. Very powerful.
I think this line was central to Rubio's speech. On the surface it's a nice message about the promise of America and all the things that can be accomplished here, but I took a deeper meaning from it. His parents could have taken the easy way, stayed in Cuba, and taken a minimal level of security and handouts by the government. Instead, they chose to take a chance and moved to America where they knew things wouldn't be easy but that if they were willing to work hard their kids would have the chance to have the things that they couldn't. Their dream was not for themselves but for their kids.
I believe that he was trying to get across to people his age (my age) that things are not good right now, but that if we are willing to work hard, if we are willing to walk away from things that current seniors have (retirement in early 60s, Medicare, Social Security), if we choose the more difficult path for ourselves then things can be better for our kids and grandkids. We can choose not to condemn them to mediocrity. In doing so we may have to work harder and longer, but if we do it they won't have to.

Contrast Eastwood's appearance, therefore, not with the professional politicians and speech-makers but with, say, the Sarah Jessica Parker ad: one, a gravelly voiced icon ageing gracefully and in his own skin, talking about the heartbreak of 23 million unemployed to an empty chair; the other, a botox-filled horseface clinging to an appearance 20 years or so out of date and talking about how she's going to entertain the same absent guest at her soiree--and he needs *our* help.
As for Romney's speech, it was pretty good but not great. I did like the "big jobs take an American" line. It made me think of this:

The head DNC uglynator says the Republicans should have scaled back the convention out of respect for victims of Isaac the TS/Huricane. This while Obama campaigned in full speed.
I would counter that, in light of this, the DNC should scale back THEIR convention out of respect for the victims of Isaac. After all, the Republican Convention fell DURING the storm, so the magnitude of the damage couldn't be known yet. But the DNC is coming AFTER the storm. They should actually cancel their convention and go volunteer in the Gulf states, giving blood and clearing away debris. I'm sure those Code Pink vagina costumes would go a long way toward mopping up the flood waters.

Win or lose there's something we all need to teach all the young we can in direct opposition to what they endure all the time at school.

very likely that it was a Paulbot who isn't really a Ron Paul supporter but a commie infiltrator. There was another poster here who said she remembered how the DNC convention rules were gamed thirty years ago to facilitate the donk extreme leftward shift. If the strategy worked for the donks, why wouldn't the commies try the same tactic with the GOP, using the Ron Paul contingent as an entry point?

Be sure to go back and listen to the speeches the olympians gave too. I was amazed at the courage it took for some of them to step onto that stage, given the career risk. Rowdy Gaines and Scott Hamilton in particular.
Oh I will! I remember when I saw the commercial the Olympians cut -- with Kristi Yamaguchi and others -- talking about Salt Lake City and how Mitt made it happen. My first thought was, "Oh wow, they're going to take some body blows to the career for doing this." How sad is it that that was my FIRST thought? Not my third, or fourth, or even my second thought. It was the FIRST.
The regressive left needs to be beaten back into its dark, ugly hole in the ground and never see the light of day again.

203 Yes.
If we do it, they'll have the chance they won't have if we don't do it.
It? Self sacrifice. THAT is something the American public won't buy. It might come their way, but not by choice. But as it has come our nation's way, doom at the debt door, I won't willingly pay for pirates to profit from my self sacrifice, usurping Liberty to benefit authoritarianism. Lip service doesn't amount to squat.
"mitt was presidential..... "
THAT is true. But even Mitt's acceptance speech riffed on "You Deserve" to which the Unforgiven retort stands. "Deserve's got nothing to do with it."
Our nation's heroes who have fought to establish our Constitutional Government and to preserve it are the ones who do not deserve what has happened.
In our marriage, we've already spent our entire life in self sacrifice. That traditional role is nothing new to us. Join the club. But the Rule of Law and constitutional integrity must function intact. Otherwise, this election would be a mere exchange serving one dictator to the next authoritarian, great image and all the propaganda aside.
The "economic recoveries" since Reagan's Recession all relied on bubbles and inflation. Back in the late 70s, high school graduates could earn a "decent living" self sufficiently without any tax funded subsidies. Try that now. The puppet masters consistently invested/divested American "wealth" abroad. No single president can do anything without cooperation. It's one thing to get working class support to win an election. Quite another to fulfill those campaign promises when confronted by the global investment industry bent on spending US taxes abroad.
To Ebert's "sad" the saddest thing of all is that for too many, the American Dream amounts to get rich quick at all costs scheme advancing organized crime, permeating our nation and the globe. I never bought into that. And I'm happy with my life, modest as it is, as I've been true to myself, my spouse, my children, "humanity", and remain humbly with faith in God's hands.
For certain, I'll be voting against Obama. And should Romney become POTUS, I'll continue in prayer to Divine Providence for our children and posterity to value our American heritage and legacy, the US Constitutional Governance advancing our founding principles in perpetuity.
May God Bless America
Now have a good weekend. /I'm outta here.

Social and fiscal issues are intertwined to a great degree..
When people say that they are "fiscally conservative but socially liberal", they have created a dichotomy in their heads that one day has to be resolved.
If you are socially liberal, that means that you believe in the necesity of government spending to construct the so-called "social safety net", among other things. At some point in time, the cost of this social safety net is going to run up against your fiscal conservative notions. These two conflicting notions cannot exist forever in the same head.

Eastwood has social and pop-culture stature in this country because of 50 years making TV shows and movies that are and were widely popular.
It is permitted for pop-culture icons to rail against conservatives/Republicans because they (well, we, that is ....us!) have been designated in the pop-culture as "the other", to be insulted and laughed at by morons.
Morons: Cher, Rosanne Barr, George Clooney, Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin, and a whole host of other Hollywood morons who have had someone else's words put in front of them for years and imagined they were wise and thoughtful.
Eastwood's sin was in deviating from the common hive-mind of the pop-culture mob. He has to be read the riot act by the Pop-culture Soviet. Denunciations will follow to make an example of Eastwood and make sure that no one else makes the mistake that he made in aligning himself with the reactionary bourgeouise Republican philistines.

"I couldn't resist piling on media fact checkers yesterday."
GABE!!
Give yourself a few points for prognostication. But just a few, because I guess it was kind of predictable.
I'm looking at this morning's Buffalo News (owned by Warren Buffet, BTW) and the headline is a boring "Romney promises better future," with a large but unflattering photo. But the main article below that is entitled "Ryan taken to task for litany of lies". It's first paragraph goes, "Paul Ryan lied. Again and again." It later adds that he "infuriated independent critics in the blogosphere".
They quote a "Fox News contributor" name Sally Kohn, who I've never heard of, saying it was, in part "an apparent attempt to set the world record for the greatest number of blatant lies and misrepresentations slipped into a single political speech." I guess we're supposed to think "Even Fox news says it's a bunch of lies."
Then they say "Let's go down the list, one by one." They list exactly four claims in this allegedly record-setting string of "lies," and they do exactly what Gabe says. (1) They dispute Ryan's claim that Obama did "exactly nothing" with his his financial commission's recommendation by starting off with "Sure enough, Obama didn't push the bipartisan budget plan put forth by his fiscal commission. But..." (2) About Ryan saying "you were cut out of the deal", meaning the "stimulus", they claim that "about $230 billion of the stimulus came in the form of tax cuts." (I don't remember any talk about a third of the stimulus being tax cuts - where did THAT even come from?) (3) They say it's "grossly misleading" to say that ObamaCare was paid for, in part by channeling money away from Medicare, but then say "Yes, the Obama health care law cut $716 billion dollars out of the projected future growth in Medicare. But..." [you've heard the rest in other Democratic campaign ads] (4) The odd one is where they dispute when the Janeville plant closed, which the say happened a month before Obama took office. Odd that a fact like that could be up for debate. I presume that Mr. Rayn knows what happened in his own town.
These guys are REALLY, REALLY afraid of Ryan.

Alexthechick, I wasn't trying to pick on you in particular or the idea that being "libertarian" conflicts with being fiscally conservative.
But everytime someone insists that they want to be "fiscally conservative but socially liberal" (socially liberal does not equal "libertarian" to me), they create this ridiculous conflict.
Socially liberal is a lot more than being permissive about personal behavior, or taking a libertarian approach to personal actions.
Socially liberal takes a whole level of belief to the point that government must intervene to correct social inequalities. It's the difference between
1) Socially conservative: homosexual marriage is wrong! It will undermine heterosexual marriage and child rearing.
2) Libertarian: consenting adults should be able to do what they want if they are not harming anyone. Government should not be actively working to keep people from certain personal behaviors.
3) Socially liberal: Homosexual marriage is a right that must be compelled on people by the courts. The legislatures cannot be trusted!
The older I get, the less I really want to know about or get involved in what people do in their personal life. Frankly, I really don't care. There are profound arguments about what this or that is going to do to society, but society is already so screwed up by what the vast majority of straight people are doing, I don't see how the 2-4% of the population that is homosexual is going to wreck the lives of the other 95-96% of people in the country.

Being raised a Catholic, I was amused to see him try to conduct a sort of mini-mass, while a party was going on.
As far as what he said, he had his own version of "You didn't build that." In his, God gets the credit, instead of the government. So there you have it once again - the main difference between Christians and communists is who your "god" is.

The thing that everybody seems to have missed in Clint's speech, is that is was extremely pacifistic. He was critical of the Afghanistan war, while suggesting that the troops simply be brought home immediately, and that we could have learned that it was a bad idea from the Russians.
I took the advice of the morons last night and checked MSNBC. They did not disappoint. At one point, Mr Madcow gave us a teaser about what the "weirdest" thing was. Upon returning after a break she infomed us that it was this exchange between Eastwood and the empty chair. She carried on that it was "the weirdest thing" to have ever happened in any political convention. Later, when MSNBC broke in for a news update, the said of Clint's bit that "some have called it wierd". So, I guess "some" means "one whacked out nutjob who works here" over on that channel.
