In an apparent shift in strategy based on Islamists' keen abilities to locate obscure videos on the Internet, President Obama went on Letterman and made an appeal to the Muslim world to not hurt our people.
“The message we have to send to the Muslim world is we expect you to work with us to keep our people safe,” Obama said during a taped interview with CBS’s David Letterman in New York. “We expect their full cooperation because that’s the only way the world works.”
I understand he's also considering making a speech, sending a sternly-worded letter and, if these don't work, pursuing a UN resolution to address the problem.
Matt Yglesias out-beclowned himself yesterday on Twitter. I have to hand it to him - I didn't think this was possible.

This apparently means that all property exists only because of the state, which means that we are only allowed to own things because of the state; in essence, all property is the state's.

Qunnipac has a couple of not-so-great state polls (WI O+6 and VA O+4), although these span 11th-17th and so capture some convention bounce. In this context, their Colorado poll showing O only up 1 is extremely encouraging.

I just finished going through the math to reweight the RCP polls to match the Rasmussen party ID monthly voter registration poll. This is a simple poll that Rasmussen runs every month with a 15,000 sample size. It asks one question. "With which party are you registered to vote?"
This is where we started:
Rasmussen R+3
Tipp O+2
CBS/NYT O+3
Fox O+5
Ipsos O+3
Dem Corps O+5
ABC/WaPo O+1
WSJ/NBC O+5
Average is O+2.6%
When we reweight the polls we get the following:
Rasmussen R+3
Tipp R+2.5
CBS/NYT R+7.7
Fox O+3.4
Ipsos O+3.2
Dem Corps R+0.4
ABC/WaPo R+6.7
WSJ/NBC R+3.7
Average is R+2.2%
In several cases there was no data to learn how the Independents are going to split, so I had to assume they will split 50/50. I also assume undecideds split 50/50.
So if you live by RCP, Romney is slightly in the lead and will win if he can get over 50% of he undecideds. In other words exactly what he said on the Mother Jones video.
I also note that the results look more like a reasonable set of public polls. Some show Obama ahead, some Romney. The current polls with ALL of them showing Obama ahead by a few points within one standard deviation is statistically very unlikely. That points strongly toward manipulation to achieve a desired effect.

The classic liberal concept of the state (small "l") is based in one form or another on the social compact. Boiled down to its essence (and one can find this in Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Madison, Mill and on and on and on), western thought on how governance should work is that there are a set of legal parameters within which the individual is free to make what he/she will of themselves. The government is at the mercy of the individuals or pluralistic groups of them.
The thinking since Marx came on the scene is that the government is the raison d'etre of society. Hence, we get statements that claim there are no rights or property without government. The left has their antecedents wrong. And it's not just a difference of opinion, they are fundamentally WRONG on the basic principles on which this country especially was founded.

The first instance of rebellion occurred in MA in 1787 and is known as "Shay's Rebellion". The State legislature was controlled by the monied interests along the coast. Most of the tax burden though fell on the farmers in the Western part of the State in the form of property taxes. Unfortunately the taxes were to be paid in hard currency (gold and silver). This is the same thing that sparked rebellion against the crown in 1776 because there was no hard currency available. The farmers existed mostly on a barter economy.
When they could not pay their taxes in gold or silver the courts condemned their property and sold it at auction. Shay's rebellion was primarily;y aimed at shutting down the courts and preventing them from taking property.
This same issue was to present itself over and over again throughout the history of the country. Popular culture like to depict the evil Snydley Whiplash as a banker taking the old widow's property and the young daughter during the depression. In point of fact it was far more likely that Snydley Whiplash was a county tax assessor who took the property.
I those days people paid cash for houses and property so there was no mortgage that allowed the banks to take property. (However in the "dust bowl" a lot of farms were used as collateral for seed loans).
But overall, most farms and property were lost due to delinquent taxes because there was no money to pay the taxes.
But you will never hear this from the MFM.

Yes, the laws in those days (and this was one of the major problems with the Spanish Inquisition) said that if someone plead guilty to a charge of witchcraft, or plead not guilty but was determined to be a witch anyway, the State (or, in this case: colony) gained possession of all of their assets after their execution.
The only loophole was not to enter a plea at all.

However, the courts have steadily watered this down over the years as the regulatory State has expanded. As it stood up through the 80s the government did not have to give you "just compensation" for regulatory takings unless it "took" 5% or more of your property. However, due to stare decisis creep, public "use" has morphed into public "purpose" in the Kelo ruling. Now they can take any property they want for any reason they want.
And "just compensation" means what ever the local assholes say. I saw a case in NY last year where just compensation for 100 feet of Long Island beach front property as $21,000. Hell, even in SC beach front property runs 100K a foot.
They hope you don't have the money up front to fight them in court.

I about threw my shoe at my TV last night when the local Fox affiliate covered the Romney tape. They used every trick in the book to make it sound as bad as possible for Mitt.
They played only snippets even of the snippet. When his vocal tone would have disrupted the narrative (remember: tone of voice is important), they switched to reading his comments. Every other sentence was about how the statement had "hurt" his campaign or that he was "battling back," which is clearly a tactic to make people believe it hurt the campaign.
They even covered a fund-raiser he held hear in Dallas, making it sound as ominous as possible that the dinner was $25K/plate. Never mind that Obama routinely has $40K/plate dinners that never get reported. And they spent more time on the protestors than talking about Romney's remarks.
Even that was terrible reporting. The images they showed of the protestors had (max) 12 people there. But the reporter made sure to say, "Oh, I saw them earlier and at the height there 80 - 100 people." Okay- first, that's a whole lot of nuthin'. Second, "pics, or it didn't happen." She wants me to believe that she got there before there were "80-100 people" but didn't get the camera set up until all of those people had come and gone? Pull the other one, it has bells on.

It is simpler than that. Only the State owns anything, thus it owns everything. It permits the "right sort" of people to temporarily use some aspects of State property for the greater good. For those that manage to exceed expectations by dint of personal effort and unjustly accumulate excessive amounts of the State's property, the State has enacted a pervasive system of tax collection to ensure the "correct" results.

Pretty much every house connected to the university (staff, faculty,students) got a clean bill of health. Almost every building of jus' plain neighborhood folks got an $80 ticket for improper disposal. Needless to say, there were activists with petitions claiming that the disparate punishment was rooted in racism and that enforcement of recycling laws should only fall upon the privileged, who can afford the time and effort to put bottles and cans in the free blue bins.

I would argue that it started earlier. America's first big industrial foray into socialism was in the form of socialized railroads and canals, which they called "internal improvements," begun in the 1840s, but expanded even further under Lincoln and his successors. It was a massive public (i.e., socialized) make-work project.
Before that, there were various socialized banking schemes (but they had been short-lived, until the current one was set up in 1913).
And, of course, America socialized the schools in the 1820s to 1840s. That was at a time when they openly called the theory "socialism." Public schools were overtly founded as a socialist project.
So, Progressivism wasn't the first. It was the first movement to adopt a shiny new label to replace the term "socialist," which even as early as 1880 was so discredited that it needed rebranding.

Which I did periodically to stay sane.

My point is that there is no economic difference between "infrastructure" and any other economic enterprise. Socialism is socialism.
Just like everything else, all government enterprises are destined to fail, and are always and everywhere inferior to private enterprise, because a system of voluntarily-paying customers MUST adapt to changing circumstances, or it ceases to exist.
The purpose of socializing an enterprise is to insulate it against the economic signals that would otherwise tell its managers that adaptation is needed. The whole point of tax-funding is to allow the enterprise to NOT change its production and consumption patterns in the face of failure. (See, e.g., the Chicago Public Schools, which are a clear failure, and yet determined not to change anything about how they operate. They don't have to change, because their income is not derived from voluntarily-paying customers.)

That's a problem I have with conservative talk radio. Doesn't matter the host or format..Limbaugh, Levin, Wilkow; terrestrial or satellite. The news breaks are all MSM outfits, and they usually contradict everything the host just said in his talk segment.
For example, I usually listen to Levin on the way home from work. He spends 5 minutes ripping the SCMOAT, then the news break comes on and the AP guy is praising Zero while either ignoring Romney or lamenting his "gaffes".

They are more alike than not.
The state-funded highways (which became the federal Interstate Highway System), like the railroads before it, have always been a major source of corruption. The type and location of the road has always favored certain landowners over others, certain industries over others, and those owners have for over a century manipulated the governmental road decision-making process to favor themselves and screw over others. The favorable (or unfavorable) location of an exit ramp alone can make a landowner rich (or poor), and has both created (and destroyed) whole towns.
And the decisions about the building and location of roads to favor certain constituencies has also been a major source of vote-buying for politicians, just like Solyndra.
Also, the economic waste that's inherent in the construction of something like I-95 is always there, even if it's not always obvious. For example, the State under-prices the use of its roads (i.e., mostly free), which means that every time they build one, it immediately gets over-crowded. The amount of time (and money) lost by "the public" due to traffic jams (in a single day) is incalculable.
Plus, you have to measure waste by how economically profitable it COULD have been to locate a particular road (or bridge, or whatever) somewhere else. You have to consider the road that was never built, and measure the current road against that.
Also, take a look at the traffic signals on any major artery road -- you have dozens of people sitting and waiting at lights for several minutes, each cycle. Multiply that delay by thousands of cycles per day, and thousands of intersections across America, and you have a HUGE amount of wasted time, all because the State's traffic engineers DON'T CARE enough to install a more efficient signalling system. If Starbucks was as slow as the average traffic light, they'd go out of business in a week.
Then, of course, there's the cost of 35,000 or so dead people every year, as a result of the State's car-design standards, combined with its road-building design features, and its use-policing systems. Those State decisions add up to 100 dead people a day. If 100 people per day died inside American fast food restaurants, and those deaths were attributable in part to the way these businesses were designed, built and operated, there would be some rather rapid adaptations, I think, to reduce the carnage.

Value compared to what costs? It's easy to say the benefits outweigh the costs when you deliberately ignore most of the costs (including the non-monetary ones, such as loss of time, deaths, and lost opportunities for a better version, as I mentioned).
The hardcore Libertarians will maintain that private toll roads would take up the slack, but I don't buy it.

It seems to me that road socialism and school socialism have merely been around for a long time, longer than anyone posting here, so they seem normal and ordinary. No one alive today can say they've personally seen a system without them, so people tend to believe it's impossible.
That's not economic analysis. That's not a rational argument. That's not a calculation of economic costs and benefits. It's just familiarity.

Of course they are, because building a governmental toll road is still a 98% governmental project, but with a tiny amount of quasi-private-looking "payment" grafted onto the front end.
Government has still made all of the major economic decisions about the road -- where it will be, what size it will be, who will build it, how much to pay for building it, how much to charge, how it will be policed, etc.
It's not really private at all.

5. America gets nuked, in several major cities (e. g., San Diego, New York City, Dallas, Seattle). Not Denver - illuminutties have a new HQ there.
6. Utter chaos and trauma ensue, allowing the Bilderbergers to remake America politically, to suit their own tastes.
7. Profit.
Your best bet at this point, and at any point, is to turn to God for help. Ask HIm to guide you as to what to do. Clean up your act, help your neighbor, do the right thing. The system dis spur the economy which was badly mired in recession in the 50s. It had its benefits and it had its problems.
You can see a lot of its problems driving North on US 1 with the dilapidated motels that are closed because all the North-South traffic went to I-95.

Think about WHY free enterprise isn't as popular today as it once was, or should be, with voters.
It's because of what Mitt was saying on that "secret" donor Mother Jones video -- 47% of the voting public has already been bought off.
Think about how many people derive their income from taxation -- school employees, road contractors, direct government employment, Social Security & Medicare, not to mention direct welfare recipients paid to do nothing (much like a lot of road-construction employees and teachers!).
It's a cancer that's eating its host. If it's not curtailed, then you will not get popular support.
Obama only has the luxury of favoring "redistribution" because the free, voluntary exchange of private property is what CREATED something for him to redistribute. That's the real message that we ought to be pounding.
I don't actually believe the US will survive, in its current form, for my lifetime. The currency stresses alone are enough to bring it all down, and I don't see it lasting another 10-20 years, much less the 50 or so I plan on living.
But if you think a Fabian, incremental approach will work with voters, then sure, start with something other than roads and the mail and schools. Eliminate the State in some other area, start small, then move onto the next one.
But to do even that much, you actually have to convince people that free enterprise and markets are a great benefit to humanity, not the dirty word or punchline that the Left has made them out to be (a result they achieved primarily through the instrument of government schooling, I might add).

I also note that the results look more like a reasonable set of public polls. Some show Obama ahead, some Romney. The current polls with ALL of them showing Obama ahead by a few points within one standard deviation is statistically very unlikely. That points strongly toward manipulation to achieve a desired effect.

Great point. It's the same one I've been saying offline to everyone that I speak to. Most of those polls are oversampling Democrats and undersampling Independents to achieve the desired effect. It's bad enough that most are basing their sample on the large Democrat advantage in 2008, which has about a 10% chance of happening this year, but they are minimizing the number of Independents they are including in their results because they know Romney is leading by an outside-the-margin-of-error amount among Independents.
Bottom line: if the election is D+7 again, like it was in 2008, Obama will win. The pollsters know this, which is why they are using these ridiculous samples of large Democrat advantages ... to influence the race through the publicizing of the poll results showing Obama leading. The skewed samples also helps them to get Obama's job approval rating to 50% in those same polls instead of the actual 45% or so that it is.
