Happy Monday.

On 60 Minutes last night, the President characterized the death of an ambassador, the sacking of a consulate, the storming of three embassies, and the burning of countless American flags as mere "bumps in the road" in the Middle East.

The President's remark is noteworthy not merely because he uses a euphemism for inconvenience to refer to the horrifying situation he partially bears responsibility for, but because he identified a shocking root cause for the problem:

But I was pretty certain and continue to be pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road because — you know, in a lot of these places — the one organizing principle — has been Islam.

When a Republican points to the problem of Islam, liberals gasp and mutter about bigotry and racism. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for similar condemnation of the President.

Ohio is described as "under siege" by the presidential campaigns.

Oh, I've been meaning to share these two Kickstarter projects for about a week. Kickstarter, if you don't know, is a means for entrepreneurs to raise smallish sums of money for a business venture, say a film, book, comic, game, etc. They cutely call it "crowd funding." Folks should know that when you back a project, unless it meets its minimum goal, it won't get made. Here's how it works.

Anyway, the first project is Amelia Hamilton's second book, Ten Steps to Freedom: A Little Patriot's Guide to the American Revolution. Amelia previously wrote One Nation Under God: A Book for Little Patriots. She got some fairly amusing hate mail over that, as recounted in this video by sometime-guestblogger Ben Howe.

The second project is a Christmas-themed card game from Gamesmith called 12 Days. Yeah, Christmas is coming. Dang.

13 You know,  we haven't heard a thing about the White House staff over the last 4 years,  except for the addition of the chef in charge of the garden and stuff.

I wonder how many have taken early retirement,  or quit and gone on to do something else?  Also,  unlike Hillary Clinton's cover story about re-doing the White House living quarters,  we have heard NOTHING about redecorating the upstairs.

Now I know darn well Michelle Obama would never have lived with Laura Bush's decor.  The question is,  who re-did the upstairs and what did they do to the rooms?  Mirrored walls?  Vinyl wallpaper?  Beyonce posters? It must be awful because otherwise the shelter magazines would have been all over it.

21 #15  Bad taste is bad taste.  Plus,  I have been called a racist since at least 2000,  so I don't care.

The Obama residence in Chicago and his office in the Senate were decorated in minimalist style with lots of stainless steel, glass, abstract prints,  etc.  So I figure they brought that type of look to the White House and would have no compunction about messing with the architecture to get the look they wanted.

The offices are apparently decorated with giant Obama posters and photos of His Wonderfulness so I see no reason to assume that the living quarters are decorated  any better than that.

Chick-fil-a has not changed their stance on anything.Chick-fil-a was originally portrayed as "anti-gay" for their support of traditional marriage. When the media finally realized they weren't anti-gay and didn't give to anti-gay causes, the story became "Chick-fil-a changes positions". My wife's in local marketing for CFA and they have made their official position very clear to all of the local stores.

37 #33  Years ago I learned all about the modern art collector.  I was working for a high-end furniture store and did house calls to measure rooms and interview clients prior to the designer  doing a floor plan,  with a presentation to the client of recommended purchases.

I visited a home where the guy was very proud of his (ugly) modern art.  And while I dutifully made admiring noises,  the guy cheerfully told me it was worth a lot because the artist just died!

90% of modern art is schlock that depends on whether the artist can spin some bunkum about it's deep significance.  I imagine the Obamas are susceptible to this type of salesmanship.

38 re: WH "décor" All anyone needs to see is the photo of Dear Leader sitting with one daughter on either side of him, watching Mooch's speech at the DNC. The photo said it was taken at the WH, in their living quarters. They are seated on a large, bright gold crushed velour sofa. There's some other modern hideousness surrounding them, but the image of the crushed velour is burned onto my retinas. And I think one of the kids is barefoot. Someone else can search the photo, it was "official"; I really don't want to view it again.

When my Hatettes were wee tykes, they took art classes at the Cleveland Museum of Art (great value because it was worth it just for the materials they used).  Wisely they concurrently offered adult classes for the parents so they didn't have to drive home only to turn around shortly to retrieve the rugrats.  I took a couple of them and one was taught by a woman who really punctured the gasbags and swells that overly populate the place, urging us to get up really close to a painting to see how something was done and telling anybody that thought we were being parvenus to fuck off.  Plus she was at least as encouraging on developing what little skill I had as any public school art teacher I ever had.



Her forte was *not* modern art so one day she brought in a guest lecturer who was giving some informed opinions on some abstract piece, which mostly came out as "blah blah" to me.  Having as big of a yap in real life as I do online, I said "Put simply, how am I supposed to appreciate viewing something like this".  He told me where to stand in front of this one piece, told me to let the image fill my entire range of viewing, and notice the tension of how the colors fade into each other.  This was obviously something that was specific to this work (I sure as hell can't remember what it was) or something similar, but my point is that it worked and I gained an appreciation for something that I'd otherwise be lacking.



Robert Hughes wrote some books where he destroyed the pretenders of modern art.  He had no use for the scamming fucks which populate that world and took great pleasure in calling them out.  He is easily the most readable art critic that I've ever experienced.

The problem with this is a) it's a day late and a dollar short; b) it's probably a conservative dog whistle.

I see this as campaign triangulation: he's trying to co-opt Romney's side's view of the events in Egypt and Libya, because it polls better than abject subservience.

All that said, some credit to the President. He spoke the truth even if he'd prefer not to.*

62 So I didn't see the travesty that was 60 minutes last night (I never watch, I'd rather put my own eyes out, first), but if the clip I heard was indicative of how the President was treated, I'm pretty sure even the LIVs were left scratching their heads.

What I heard was a clip (apparently that didn't make it into the final edit) where TFG was gently prodded about negative/false campaign adds.  The furthest he'd let himself go was "well, sometimes we get over zealous, but I've run a very positive campaign."

No challenge to that at all.  Just an attitude of "I'm sorry I even have to be asking these questions, your wonderfulness, but I'll look like a complete tool if I don't."

And even those wound up on the cutting-room floor, too potentially damaging to their god-king.

While we were on our cruise this spring, we went to the art auction.  My wife and I bought one piece that we liked, but they had a set of Thomas Kincade paintings: certified originals.  Some dude walked off with the whole lot (10 of the things, at least three of them were those huge almost-murals)  for a frickin' song.  I think he paid like $1,000 for the lot.

In part I agree, but in part I disagree.

Certainly, as long as they can keep the discussion about free speech, they're happy because the discussion isn't about female genital mutilation, or the stoning of victims of rape.

On the other hand, that makes free speech the primary issue- since without it, you can't discuss those things anyway.

All in all, though, I say we just tell them to FOAD, and talk about those other issues anyway.  That way we both defend the right to free speech (by, you know, exercising it), and talk about the fact they're 7th century barbarians living in the 21st century.

I think Ras is making a turnout assumption, so he is splitting the difference between 2008 (D+7) and 2004 (even).  He is ignoring his party ID poll.  I am not using his August results, I am averaging June, July, and August.  When he releases Sept, I will drop June from the average.

Party ID for actual voters:
2004 - Even
2008 - D+7
2010 - D+1 (might have been D+2, would have to check)

Historically, GOP wins when behind by a few points in his party ID poll.  The GOP has NEVER been ahead in this poll, until now.
