— Gabriel Malor Happy Tuesday.
Returning for one day only, it's DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM. (Really, it seems like we're doomed.)
Ahmadinejad, speaking in New York, said that Israel would be eliminated. The official U.S. reply is that Ahmadinejad's statement is "disguthting, offenthive and outrageouth." Oh, yeah, that's gonna leave a mark. Ahmadinejad speaks to the UN tomorrow.
Guy Benson looks into the latest Politico poll -- you know, the one where they're trying to create the idea that Obama is pulling ahead -- and finds some unusual results: they've got Obama up 3% and yet Romney is ahead of him in six of seven issues. Also, it should be pointed out that Obama has been up by about 3% in RCP's average for months; that's not pulling ahead, that's status quo.

On the other side you have people whooping and hollering about the fact that the polls (highly skewed polls) show him not yet getting trounced. Which means he's getting trounced.
And then you have all the people complaining about the fact that the one guy is not complaining more, while at the same time wringing their hands over all the skewed polls that show the other guy isn't yet getting trounced.
I want to be entertained by all this, and you people are letting me down. Shame on you.

The lengths people will go ... including eugenicists' propaganda...
Researchers in S.Korea's Inha University announced that castrated men living centuries ago outlived other men by a significant margin.
...As if living conditions and job description, avoiding service in wars and physical confrontations, didn't help add to the life expectancy.

Good morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Apologies for the quickie story yesterday. Today looks like a little easier day, so let's discuss a bit of Hollywood history:
One of the many misconceptions about the silent era – and one that forms much of the plot of Singin’ In The Rain – is that its stars were all ruined when talking pictures came in, because none of them had good voices.
It’s true that a number of stars and minor actors didn’t make the transition, but in almost all cases it was due to factors beyond their control, such as the thick accents of Vilma Banky and Pola Negri, Marion Davies’ stutter or Jobyna Ralston‘s lisp. Other stars fell by the wayside simply because the public expected new actors for the new technology; sure, it might be great to hear Max Linder or Theda Bara talk, but since they’d been making movies for a long time, you already knew what to expect from them. How could they surprise you?
When the subject of lost careers comes up, though, invariably the example of John Gilbert is given. Gilbert was one of the greatest of the silent screen heartthrobs, second probably only to Valentino, and three of his most popular films, He Who Gets Slapped (with Lon Chaney), The Merry Widow (with Mae Murray) and The Big Parade (with Renée Adorée) can still be seen in regular broadcasts on TCM.
GilbertÂ’s career, itÂ’s said, was ruined because his voice was a high, girlish squeak. Alternatively, itÂ’s said that MGM mogul Louis B. Mayer, who hated Gilbert (though whether because the actor got the better of the studio in contract negotiations or because Gilbert once punched Mayer, isnÂ’t clear), deliberately sabotaged his debut, speeding up the soundtrack to turn the great lover into a joke.
But the delicious actress Colleen Moore, who managed to make the transition to sound, knew the truth:
“John’s voice was fine – it was the same timbre as that of Ronald Colman or Dough Fairbanks, both of whom successfully made the transition from silents to sound. Metro put him into his first talking picture – it was called One Glorious Night – and when it was finished, they ran it in the projection room and all the executives, Mayer and Thalberg and the others, were pleased as punch. They stood around congratulating John – and themselves – on the triumphant proof that he’d conquered the microphone.
“Then they took his picture out and previewed it, and that’s when the audience betrayed John. You see, for years and years movie audiences had been accustomed to watching romantic leading men as they made those ardent and passionate speeches to the heroines. But they’d never heard the words. Now on came John, and for the first time the audience heard him saying, “Darling, I love you – I love you,” and when they heard that, they began to giggle nervously and to titter, and then they laughed at him. And the executives misunderstood it. They assumed the people were laughing at his voice.
“That was it. The stories started going around about John’s high-pitched voice, and they ruined him. But just you watch Queen Christina, that picture he finally got to make with Greta Garbo – she insisted they hire him – and you listen to John in the love scenes, and you’ll realize that all that gossip about him is absolutely false.”
And now it's off to grab a quick cup of tea and settle in to the daily grind. Hope you all have a wonderful day.

The point is not so much the salary, but the benefits. It's not like they can go get a job for only 6 months a year outside of football. No one would hire them for a 6 month gig in anything other than coaching so that they could get a job with health insurance.
The solution is for the league to jack their salary slightly and then purchase health, workman's comp and all the other fringes most people get.
After watching last night and about 3 BS games on Sunday, I for one would be happy to play. These refs suck

I agree, but they want it all. That's where I part company with the refs. I'm sympathetic to their need of health insurance, but I also think they can just take the salary cut and have the league buy it for them. It would be cheaper for them overall if the league did that.
The refs want the benefits, but do not want to give up the salary base to do it. That's the sticking point.
For me right now, the season is over. It hasn't even been fun to watch football the last 3 weeks. It's like watching a high school game. I'd be willing to pay more just to get decent officiating, but that's not a majority position.
Posted by: Sean Bannion at September 25, 2012 03:56 AM (sbV1u)
Oh yeah, I forgot that "health insurance paid for by someone else" is a human right. WTF.
You'll note that's still a laughable basic point. If they don't like that their full-time high-status white-collar job doesn't provide health insurance, they should go fix that instead of demanding their part-time job pick up the slack.

No new polls in the RCP average, so I'm just waiting for VBJ to give us our early Rasmussen results. It will affect the average by about a tenth of a percent.
Yesterday, Romney had a 3.6% lead.
Today, based on an idea JohnE gave me last night, I'm going to add a range of averages. I'm going to start posting 4 values, current Rasmussen Party ID, 2004 voter ID, 2008 voter ID, and 2010 voter ID.
You can then pick your preferred version of optimism.

I read a case study in some stupid business class I took about a company that gave no benefits at all. They did the legal minimum, and nothing else. What they did do was pay their employees on quality and production.
I think it was called Lincoln Electric, and they built welding sets, or something like that.

@133 I knew about pigford, but why are they making it seem like it something new by announcing it on Monday?
...Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced Monday that Hispanic and women farmers and ranchers who believe USDA discriminated against them can file claims to get a piece of at least $1.33 billion in cash awards and tax relief payments and up to $160 million in farm debt relief, beginning this week....

I dunno. I was watching the Pats game and at one point I watched a blatant, and I mean blatant, defensive pass inference call blown.....5 feet from the ref, with no obstructions, directly in front of him. Even Cris Collinsworth said, "Wow. Just....wow."
Not so sure these guys are trainable after seeing that. They're just not used to the pace of the pro game. They need like 2 seasons to get their heads around it.

They're not just college refs, although the ones from college are from Division II and lower, since Division I refs either didn't want to, or weren't allowed to officiate. (Reuters) - Electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) on Tuesday cut its forecast for 2012 revenue, citing a slower-than-expected rollout of its Model S sedan.
The company said in a regulatory filing that it now expects full-year revenue in the range of $400 million to $440 million, down from its prior outlook of $560 million to $600 million.
"We have methodically increased our Model S production at a rate slower than we had earlier anticipated," the company said in documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

D1 refs are controlled by the NFL Refs Association (or whatever the hell they're called). Same people. So no, D1 refs can't cross.

True, but it actually has to be a "simultaneous possession." They went over the rule for that last night after it happened. That play doesn't come close to simultaneous possession.

There are several news sites (usually small, niche sites) run by Conservatives that strive for "balance" and "objectivity." They try (I know, because I write for a couple of them, when I have the time and a good subject) to be as even-handed as possible. This is even true in their opinion pieces- albeit to a lesser extent.
I have not found one news site that has said, "We'll be objective and avoid spin when the Mainstream Press does the same," and then gone on actively to spin for Republicans. And I think it's time.

As much as the replacement refs piss me off (and I'm a Pats fan, so yeah, I'm PISSED) , I'm not going to put all the pressure solely on Goodell and the owners to compromise. There are two sides to this contract dispute, and I tend to be predisposed to oppose any group that makes a pension requirement part of their initial contract demands.
I'll tell you one thing: when the regular refs DO come back, they'd better be damn near perfect. Otherwise whatever concessions are made to get them back on the field will have been too much, IMO. But they DO have to get back on the field, and soon; the games are getting way too out of hand with the substitute teachers on the field.

An impartial press was always a myth. It goes against human nature. There are topics that lend themselves to objective reporting, like fires and robberies.
As soon as there's an issue with two sides, it is unrealistic to expect bias not to creep in.

I'm not going to put any of the pressure on Goodell and the owners. Fuck the unions- all of them.
Let's say they put in as much prep time during the week and just before the season as the actual players (not completely unreasonable) that means they're working full-time for 6 months. Less than that, really, for most of them, because they don't need all those officiating crews during the postseason. For that, they're being paid $150,000. That's not exactly chump-change.
On top of that, I'm virtually certain the league already pays 100% of their expenses for games (travel, lodging, food). The league already has to provide worker's comp (that's state-by-state, but every state requires it, so whatever state in which the league is incorporated would set the specifics of that, I think), so that shouldn't be an issue.
So what they want is a pension. For what? They're not players- they're not getting their heads smashed every game. When they decide to retire, they should still be of sound mind an body. Not only that, but a long football (playing) career is 10 years or so. Sometimes longer for kickers and such, usually much shorter (I think I once heard the average for a non-starting lineman was something like 1.5 seasons). Many of those refs have been officiating for 15+ years in the NFL, and you know they didn't start as Professional refs.
I don't begrudge them one cent they can make. I do begrudge them trying to sabotage other people's jobs (and therefore livelihoods) by trying to torpedo the whole season. You don't like what the NFL is offering? Go get a different job. Good luck finding one that will pay you $150,000 for 6 months of work.
Well, besides being a teacher.

100% higher than him mentioning the fact Shia Iran and its allies are already at war inside Syria against a huge array of Sunni groups and forces. Pasdaran, Basij, the lot. Already affecting Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey... Over a million people facing starvation and a quarter million plus refugees. Best part: it's only starting to get really hot.

Michael Dowda, 48, was discovered missing at about 3 p.m. Saturday from a work detail with maintenance at the penitentiary.
Officials said he will now face more charges including escape.
Investigators said Dowda may have stolen two guns from the home of a corrections employee who lives on the prison grounds.
The escape has some people who live outside another state prison nervous.
"That's ridiculous because that's a state prison," resident Tangynikia Wiggins said. "(They) should have extra, extra security up there. Nobody should be able to escape from up there."

I vaguely remember many cheesy science fiction movies where sports were re-envisioned to become horribly, fantastically violent bloodsports, like Rollerball and whatnot.
Not going to be our future. Damned disappointing if you ask me.

But he is right, since one of the major sticking points is a pension.....for part time employees. A pension? You know what other part time employees have a pension....Illinois state legislators. And since 2/3rd of our state's pension funding is unfunded....yea, that worked out well.
THIS. This pisses me off SO much. None of the NFL's full-time employees get a pension, and the refs want one for part-time work? When all of them already have FULL TIME jobs outside of football? Bullshit. No.

That was teh funneh. What's pathetic, and we all know this, is that you only need to change a few minor elements in that storyline and it couldn't be more truthful. Loved the "AP pic" where they were researching TFG's workout regimen that put him in top physical condition for the murder. lulz

Oh this is going to be fun.
Want to know how big Obama's lead is using the 2008 turnout model?
1.6%
Current RCP average Obama lead?
3.7%
So the RCP average uses poll that estimate turnout about double that of the 2008 wave.

Our 28 yr old "son", who is actually a kid we casually adopted from the neighborhood 12 years ago just landed in our guest room. Hardest working young man I've ever known.
Goes and gets a gal pregnant, she with two other kids from two other men, on welfare blah blah, and he convinces her to become an honest woman and marries her.
She gets thrown off welfare, foodstamps, state childcare, blah blah because of the marriage, and decides to throw him out yesterday after a year of marriage because, wait for it......
The state can provide better for her. Yes, her name is Julia. And I'm furious.

So...they're lying to Rasmussen about their party ID? That would mess up Rasmussen's weighting, for sure.
But why think they would be doing that?
I admit I'm mystified that 90+% of Republicans would not be supporting Romney.

...because he's a Ron Paul nu...
chemjeff 278--yada yada yada
Angst is legitimate, however, when Mitt's not given his fair share of network news broadcast messaging, or if Mitt were misrepresented.
Not surprised, given that you've never bothered studying Gary Johnson's own platform, let alone Ron Paul's. Boo, hiss libertarian Goldwater and early R-Reagan outmoded Taft Republicans who dare to bitterly cling to that inconvenient and outmoded, revolutionary US Constitution. Nah, better stick to augmenting for our own good Patriot Act, DHS and interventionist first "nation building" strike aggressive wars to destroy every sovereign nation state including our own. Constitutional Republic? Bill of Rights? pfft , get "real".
You perceive a threat by allowing the peon Gary Johnson voice in national debate. Yet, studying beyond propaganda does not pose a threat to the nation, only to those who insist a monopoly on idea and form, aka authoritarians. Consider trifecta, allowing the punching bag in for cover.
Most watching the R vs. D candidate gussied up WWW fixed match debates are getting drunk, high or fixed. Understandably, it is unpleasant to swallow shit while sober. Since I've spent 20 years listening to EVERYONE and have researched independently, the debates won't teach anything new, and won't entertain me, either. As if Mitt's impromptu responses while under attack from the hosts (Obama's One Voice) has a better chance than the warrior's '08 results had. Been there; done that.
Mitt wants to win? He has the money but evidently still lacks the votes. Either he needs to manipulate the count, or else actually get more voters. He knows all about salesmanship, yet he just can't connect to voters earning below $200K/year.
Becoming POTUS has been his life's goal since his dad's campaign. Being "presidential" to Mitt? Silencing opposition. Staying above the fray translates as ignoring those who just don't fit in to the big shot picture that no longer holds a place for the highly skilled American workers, including non-union artisans in right to work states. "Kiss those jobs goodbye. They are gone, and they'll NEVER come back." Romney '08.
Refusing to recognize that the $50-$80K/year income families are the median, not the $200-$250K/year whose support Mitt already has does Romney's chances no favor. It's Mitt's problem that he yet fails to connect with most people. "Trust Mitt" sells no differently than "Hope and Change" -- repackaged brand identity.
You think that it helps Mitt to win by flame throwing vs. Goldwater Republicans? Even as the libertarian-Republicans remain dedicated to vote (R) 2012, you burn libertarian-constitutional conservatives at the stake for heresy v. the neoconservative established futurism that coincidentally holds those US citizens earning below $200K/yr beneath contempt, tagged as "self made victims" who have no productive place to prosper beyond the realm of lip service in Mitt's world. Mitt was and remains as ever an authoritarian global corporatist. Mark Levin et al. screeched against corporatist Statism until Mitt got the GOP '12 ticket. Go figure. In the end, hope and change has the same trajectory as "trust" in a Rockefeller Neoconservative Republican. "assimilate"

I do believe that is what he is hoping for, and seeking our help in gaining custody.
Sadly, this incredible young man is functionally illiterate. But he can build a house like no ones business.
So it looks like paperwork and court systems are in our future.
I wish I could make these young people understand that their actions have major life altering consequences. I guess he knows that now. Sadly.
