— Gabriel Malor

Good morning.

Today is the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. It commemorates the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that inaugurated the killing of 45 million unborn Americans -- and counting. Speaker Boehner will be addressing the marchers.

Good Morning Morons. On this day in 1964 we fked up and did an amendment that barred Poll and “other” taxes for voting. Bread and circuses have run rampant ever since.

19 7 - Someone mentioned yesterday her pension kicked in, now that she's been in Congress 5 years. Compare that to military personnel, who must put in 20 to retire... unless they are injured "on the job," in which case the military has a way to deal with that. Just seems odd that Congress isn't treated like other federal employees regarding time of service before qualifying for a pension. Leaving aside the question as to how a person as disabled as she could be considered fit for duty. I agree, Vic, no snark, but these are questions that in another universe would need to answers.

Madison Matters: Recalls create powerless Senate?

MADISON, Wis.—Even if Wisconsin Democrats win back the state Senate through recall elections this summer, they'll have no ability to push their agenda for months and could find themselves out of power by this time next year.

Democrats need to win only one of the four Senate recall elections to seize the majority. But the elections aren't expected to take place until late spring at the earliest and the legislative session ends in mid-March. Under legislative rules, no bills can be introduced after that date until the next session begins in January 2013. And Republicans would get a chance just months after the recalls to retake the chamber.

"Symbolically, it of course would be a real victory if (Democrats) take the Senate, even if you're not going to do anything with it," said Charles Franklin, a visiting professor of law and public policy at Marquette Law School. "But other than symbolism, it's not likely to have any major political ramifications."

Just seems odd that Congress isn't treated like other federal employees regarding time of service before qualifying for a pension.

Not odd at all. They control all their perks. If I didn't know better, I'd think the Founders did that on purpose so when they did things like exempt themselved from their on laws they impose on the rest of us, the public would be outraged and demand their ouster.

They did not count on the Jersey Shore/American Idol Factor.

Giffords hung onto her seat to get the 5 years for her pension.  I really don't blamer her for that, because she is going to have troubles from getting shot the rest of her life.

But it also calls into question how well she has represented her district in that time.  Isn't Tim Johnson (D) totally disabled and in a coma somewhere, yet he hasn't resigned his Senate seat?  Isn't this just total bullshit?

31 Solving problems in the context of outdated and crumbling models will only dig us deeper into the hole.

LOL.  The problems that need solving are run-away, insane government control that comes with absolutely suicidal government spending and the crazed replacement of private liabilities by public liabilities (because the state makes everything ... right) thereby putting the whole state at risk with a continued downturn in the economies for these overflexed states.

And for these problems that these retards caused, they want to blame and replace capitalism ...  They should burn Davos to the ground while these slugs are meeting there.  That would be constructive.

I still can hardly believe it's down to Newt and Mitt.  What a thin crop we've got this cycle.

If Newt wins, which I guess is on the table now, how will he campaign such that he might win over the average mouth breather?  I think Mitt knows how to spew the right platitudes and bend with the wind.  Can Newt do the same?

I'm desperate to have Obie out, but the Republicans sure have a weak bench and that makes me worry.  I'll be suffering anxiety throughout this entire election season.

50 Good morning folks, and thanks for the links, Vic. Hope you get to feeling better.

Since I'm supporting him (for now), I'm glad to see Gingrich surge in Florida, but good grief, there's got to be at least 30-40% of the electorate this year that just follows whichever candidate is moving the fastest at the moment, subject to change 10 seconds from now. It's a helluva way to pick a damn president.

I don't think Mitt has it in him to get down and dirty with Newt face-to-face in a debate. And honestly, if I were advising him, I'd tell him not to...that's playing to Newt's strength and giving him an excuse to go nuclear on Mitt. And Newt is way better at nuking a person in person than Mitt is.

I may be mixing him up with some other Dem senator, but I think he has too. I seem to remember seeing a presser with him a good while back...he obviously was still having trouble speaking; you could tell he'd had a stroke, but seemed to be coherent and alert. Well, coherent and alert for a Dem senator at least.

53 Even a timid animal will become rather ferocious when backed into a corner with no good way out.  That is my Mittens analogy.  If he loses in FL, he is toast, and the panic mode has set in.  My bet would be that if he can out-defame Newt and win in FL and so get the nomination, he will promptly reverse tactics (after the convention/coronation) and revert to the "'I was able to work with the Dem legislature in MA as governor' and I intend to do the same as Pres" theme, and just to show he is not really a vicious politician, but rather a calm business executive, he will never say a bad word about Barky or his policies during the campaign.

I am praying for a fuse-lighting Newt.

What really needs to happen -- and it will be done voluntarily or be forced on us, if we survive -- is to reset to 1960.

JFK let loose the modern juggernaut of money-sucking big government, with agencies that have become self-contained, unaccountable empires. LBJ and Nixon spread the disease, and the stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure has elevated it to a new art form.

I'd hate to see all those people unemployed, I suppose, but they've had enough time at the trough....

You think either The Newt or The Mutt would have the dangling courage units to address that? I don't.

57 Hear The Roar And Pay Attention

Regarding Newt's win in SC.

Insty quoted something from Facebook that I thought more apt.  The socon won Iowa, the New Englander won NH, the Southerner won SC.  BFD  So I guess we aren't anywhere near getting a candidate.

My prediction is this race isn't decided until sometime shortly after Super Tuesday.  Unfortunately all the bomb throwing between now and then probably makes the candidate borderline unelectable if not completely unelectable.

At which point, I wonder, do the candidates come out as pro-grown up?

To me, that is a large part of the question now. The "inevitability" thing seems to be out the window now. So, can Newt learn self-discipline and practice it long enough to win? Can Romney learn to sound as if he really is passionate about at least some conservative principles in time to win? I'm rooting for Newt to learn, but I'm not at all sure either can pull it off.

I just found out my blood type. O negative. Is that giving or taking?

Posted by: Flapjackmaka at January 23, 2012 08:20 AM (/UqZh)

At one time, type O negative blood was considered the universal blood donor type. This implied that anyone — regardless of blood type — could receive type O negative blood without risking a transfusion reaction. However, even type O negative blood may have antibodies that cause serious reactions during a transfusion.

Ideally, blood transfusions are done with donated blood that's an exact match for type and Rh factor. Even then, small samples of the recipient's and donor's blood are mixed to check compatibility in a process known as crossmatching. In an emergency, however, type O negative red blood cells may be given to anyone — especially if the situation is life-threatening or the matching blood type is in short supply.

94 For those of you who apparently are listening to Michael Reagan, he doesn't know any more about the demographics than anyone else.

I am both a Reagan Republican AND a Bush 43 Republican.

And if you ask me,  this elitist line of attack is beginning to be reverse snobbery, similar to rapper fans who make fun of people who like classical music.

Class envy has crept into the GOP via the poisoning of the public discourse by Obama.  And judging by FR and some other sites,  religious bigotry has also been rearing its ugly head (and this is also courtesy of Obama's war on non-Muslim religious faiths).

I was a Perry supporter,  but damn it,  I remember how Newt acted the last time he was in a position of power, and I am worried.  I hope people think long and hard about this election before voting.

I guess we will see what happens.  If Newt wins the nomination, we will be watching an election campaign between the two most disliked people in the country. In that case,  I am afraid incumbency will have more clout.

Oh good lord, Newt ahead in Florida.  Mitt imploding.

Romney needs to change his approach, and FAST - he needs to start telling the truth, over and over, about Newt for starters.  I think he's started to do that, just too damned late.

More importantly, he needs to stop talking like a bumper sticker, all glib and slick and packaged, and roll up his sleeves and actually talk about what his economic plans ARE, precisely.  It's great he believes in Capitalism.  What sort of tax reform does he want to see, precisely?  I know he has a website, but HE needs to start saying it to people in person... like Newt does.

If he can't manage that... than I guess I was wrong about him the same way I was about Perry.  I jsut don't know who that leaves without Newt's incredible flaws.

But after all the lies, how could we believe that what he says next is the truth?

The problem with being the "weather vane" is that, once it stops working, you've completely burned any credibility you have when you try to stand on principle.

It's probably too late for Romney, but we'll know for sure by FL.  If Romney doesn't take FL, he loses on Super Tuesday.  If Romney takes FL, then he probably wins on ST (which is really sad to me- talk about bandwagons).

And Newt may, indeed, have "incredible flaws," but: a) we know about them already and b) he does have several years of successful conservative (at least in comparison to Mittens) leadership to his record.

Mitt has been up on the air with commercials since the beginning of the month, probably before that.  They are 75%+ pro-Romney, with a few anti-Newt starting to go into the rotation.

Romney is the only one on the air, and the only one with yard signs on the roads.  If you don't go to the internet, you have no idea that anyone else is running.  Which shows how important the Internet is these days in campaigns.  If Newt is actually surging here, he is doing it without using any mass media advertising or a ground game.

Admittedly, Newt might be on the air in other markets, just not Central Florida.  But if he is missing us, he is missing one of the redder sections of the state.  We would be his natural strong area.

As we mark the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we must remember that this Supreme Court decision not only protects a womanÂ’s health and reproductive freedom, but also affirms a broader principle: that government should not intrude on private family matters.

Must not intrude on private family matters unless it involves health care, how much your kids weigh, the amount of water in your flush toilet, your light bulbs, and if the amount of income you earn is over $250,000.

I've tried to keep my Paterno comments to myself, but since there have been some over-the-top adulation posts (elsewhere) about him, I'll just say that it defies belief that he did not know what male rape was (or that it even existed), as he asserted in his last interview.  And if he didn't, perhaps a guy that out of touch with reality should not have had responsibility for a couple of hundred young men.  Just sayin'.

Finally, these food nazis who are all eleventy over diabetes -- spurred on by Paula Deen's diagnosis and drug company spokesperson work (which is what really seems to have them pissed at her) -- can kiss my ass.  If you want some fun, go to a food board or some other place where it's being discussed and call them "unscientific" for claiming there are bad foods and that it's Paula's recipes that made her sick.  Then link to the American Diabetes Association's "Myths about diabetes" page.

159 So are all three Candidates at the March For Life today?

If not, WTF?

160 I've tried to keep my Paterno comments to myself, but since there have been some over-the-top adulation posts (elsewhere) about him

The cult of JoePa is just as annoying as the fans of the JEF.  Even without the Sandusky scandal (and you can't have the success at Linebacker U without his participation) Penn State has been indistinguishable from any large university program for at least a couple decades; complete with on and off campus incidents of assault by the thugs on the team that have been brushed aside.  Anybody claiming otherwise is just a fucking liar.  What happened re:  Sandusky is what happens when the twats in school administration let the athletic programs become bigger than the school.  Joe should've been forced into retirement at least a decade ago yet the fucking simpletons at the top were too afraid to possibly interrupt the revenue stream, which is all those greedy cocksuckers ever care about.  To hell with the whole fucking lot of 'em.

161 Lots of comments about how a candidate Mitt wouldn't "go after" Obama.
What is your evidence that he wouldn't?  Is it just your impression?
---
Because as I recall in his failed Senate race and his gubernatorial race he ran to the left of his opponents.

Also, he's dreadful at direct attacks.  So the strategy he's used thus far of using surrogates and PACs to attack (and then pointing the fingers at the other candidates as the sources) won't work head to head against Obama.

In addition, he will not have any meaningful media help in the general while he's had a fair amount of assistance in the primary.

Hehehe. The press sure does love them 'elite' Revolutionary Guards, don't they?

Yeah, they are the ones who mostly hit the target during fire practice. Mostly...

165 WASHINGTON — President Obama will use his election-year State of the Union address on Tuesday to argue that it is government’s role to promote a prosperous and equitable society, drawing a stark contrast between the parties in a time of deep economic uncertainty.

In a video preview e-mailed to millions of supporters on Saturday, as South Carolina Republicans went to the polls to help pick an alternative to him, Mr. Obama promised a populist “blueprint for an American economy that’s built to last,” with the government assisting the private sector and individuals to ensure “an America where everybody gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share and everybody plays by the same set of rules.”

The same "fair rules" that Solyndra played by?

Oh yeah the National Cathedral is a must see.  If I'm not mistaken they recently renovated it.

No, curious, it was repaired after the earthquake not renovated.

Not that there's anything wrong with that!

169 >>No interest in Pats v Giants.  I'll watch the game, but it basically means sports media blackout until then.  It'll be interesting to see how well two teams play with their unis slimy from the media's slobber (and worse).

Ain't that the truth.
As a longtime sports fan and Boston area native, I am not looking forward to the sickening pap ahead.
If you think MA liberal politics and their attendant MFM lackeys are sickening, you should hear the local ballwashers in the New England media.

171 I'll watch the pro bowl, but other than that it's hockey for me until spring training.

I wish I liked basketball but I just can't get into it.

They are all about conventional wisdom, which traditionally doesn't get nervous enough til it's too late.
Absolutely zero insight or critical thinking, unless it's criticism of Belichick who they hate cuz he won't play nice.

173 Isn't Giffords husband able to support her? Why does she get a windfall pension and medical bennies at tax payer expense? Yes, she was injured on the job but doesn't congress have disability ins. to cover it? Not as lucrative as a life time excessive pension for 4 years work but still, we're not entitled to such treatment.

They call it public service. They just got the definition reversed a while back and the frogs in the pot didn't notice a thing.

175 #176  Indianapolis will be happy to take the money from the Ginats and patriots fans.  My son is working for a friend as a temp bartender for the next couple of weeks, and they are looking forward to selling expensive Scotch and such.

I do hope those of you with no interest in the game will tune in for some of the coverage of my city,  which I am quite proud of.  The entire downtown has been reconfigured for exhibits, street music performances, and parties.  The stadium is downtown, so press and fans will be able to walk from venue to venue without hiring a cab or taking a bus.

I drove through downtown last night and it was pretty impressive.  Of course,  the police are also on high alert for sex-traffickers,  something we usually do not have much of a problem with.

I denounce myself.
