Top Ten Sci-Fi Weapons You Can Buy Right Now
— Ace

Well you can't buy them. The American government can, though.

Just some filler while I wake up, before I start poaching all of Ben's links.

Weapon X, the Laser Avenger, is a vehicle-based laser that can take out an aircraft. Well, a drone, at least. The 1 kilowatt beam is weak. But a 100 kilowatt beam is coming, supposedly soon.

Not mentioned here are the various sniper/gunfire detection and location systems, which use either accoustics or optics (the latter by beaming laser light around, looking for reflections from the sniper's scope's lens) to pinpoint the location of a hidden shooter.

I always liked the sound of a phased plasma rifle in a 40 watt range.  Of course, I also wondered about the 40 watt range, since i can buy a far more powerful blow drier.  But then it's not phased, is it?

Nor should we. The 5.56 has proved its worth as an everyday battle cartridge in M4/16 and 416 rifles.

But there is also availability of many battle rifles using the .308.

So it's really not an all or nothing approach. It's more of what works for the role (DM, Rifleman, etc.).

That IMHO is a better approach.

64 Just a little advice to the folks considering purchasing a firearm - Don't simply consider the upfront cost of the weapon.  First, understand the purpose of your rifle/shotty/handgun.  Each has a role to play, and when you get down to it you may recognize you need more than one, depending on the respective role of each in your defense posture.

Then, you'll need to factor in ammo costs, and just as importantly, training costs.

Your tacticool new shotty or 1911 is worthless unless you learn how to use it effectively ... start with a basic safety course, then get tactical training from your local NRA guy.

Then, practice practice practice.  It ain't cheap, but it's necessary nonetheless.

Sorry for the killjoy.  Proceed.

Because a fleet of planes remotely piloted from Nevada are going to look real pretty sitting on the ground when we go up against an enemy that can mess with our communications networks, and in twenty years that capability will extend to quite a few countries.

70 Part of it needs to involve new and inventive ways to finance them without the Mrs. finding out about it, making your life miserable for a week, and finally clubbing you to death with it in your sleep.

Among the many inventive ways quilters hide their purchases from their husbands: when you buy groceries, use your debit card and get $20 cash back. It goes in your financial records as "groceries" (the line in the online checking only says "purchase at Food Store") and you get $20 to spend as you see fit.

Then you drive around with your new fabric in the trunk of your car for awhile before you sneak it into the house, and then when your husband asks if that's new fabric, you truthfully answer, "No, I've had it for awhile."

Or you could just be an adult and talk to your spouse about what you're doing, but I'm told that's an unrealistic view of the world held only by women too defective to be married, so what do I know.

Rod from God http://tinyurl.com/42y75u A pair of satellites orbiting several hundred miles above the Earth would serve as a weapons system. One functions as the targeting and communications platform while the other carries numerous tungsten rods—up to 20 feet in length and a foot in diameter—that it can drop on targets with less than 15 minutes’ notice. When instructed from the ground, the targeting satellite commands its partner to drop one of its darts. The guided rods enter the atmosphere, protected by a thermal coating, traveling at 36,000 feet per second—comparable to the speed of a meteor. The result: complete devastation of the target, even if it’s buried deep underground.

84 Well since we are having a gun thread now my 2¢ worth:

Best home defense weapon is a short barreled shotgun commonly called a "coach gun".  12 gauge is OK but don't get any shot bigger than 6 shot. (note smaller number is bigger shot)

Best concealed carry gun is one that can be concealed, that fits your hand, and that you can afford to practice with.  I have a 6" barrel SnW .357 that fits under the seat of my truck and a Colt .45 officers model that will fit in my back pocket.

Best long gun?  There are so many they can not be listed. The caliber depends on what you will hunt.

89 That almost makes no sense at all. Why bother with a laser sight for a shottie? Posted by: EC at November 20, 2012 01:52 PM (GQ8sn) Because, contra the television, you still have to aim a shotgun, shot isn't magically target-seeking, and doesn't fill a hallway with magic particles that only hit bad guys. This is why we don't listen to Internet Gun Guy. That's a running refrain for me, but there is a harsh truth here. For whatever combination of reasons, the firearms industry is *filled* with urban legends, errors, myths and legends that WILL NOT go away, and very little is done to correct them. It's also difficult to find unbiased product reviews that actually cover, for example, enough samples of a thing to be statistically valid. It almost never happens. It's all about reputations and word-of-mouth, and that can be justifiably confusing for new shooters.

90 A shotgun using commercial ammo will still have the shot in a wad cup at room distances so effectively it is just about the same as a rifle for aiming purposes.  But still you should be able to hit something as big as a man at 10 feet without a damn laser.

If a shot is fired then yes. I think the laser is used to get the location beforehand.

I am guessing the laser device for finding scope optics could be spoofed by larding the area with dummy lenses. Finally, a use for beer goggles!
