6 The problem with ageism is like all others.  Someone is stupid.  But along comes a "do-gooder" with a government solution.  The government solution always reduces individual freedom, strangles productivity, and inevitably does not work because all it does it make paperwork for honest people to bear.

You can not keep people from being stupid.

Perhaps it was because a lot of us don’t think garbage men are worthy of notice; I disagree – anyone who works that hard deserves our respect. – I wasn’t a particularly good garbage collector: at one point, after filling the trough at the back of the truck, I pulled the wrong hydraulic lever. Instead of pushing the load into the truck, I dumped it onto the street. PA will still be able to gather data on how many voters have ID and how many don't.  Counties will not be able to ignore law and state can still encourage everyone to get ID.

The legislature screwed up here and passed this law too late in the game. Could have and should have passed it last year.

Depending on who is in the White House, indeed! Blowing guys off of motorbikes out in the Territories is one thing, but having the big-O in charge of this stuff gives me the creeps!

173 With the surge of American troops over and the Taliban still a potent threat, American generals and civilian officials acknowledge that they have all but written off what was once one of the cornerstones of their strategy to end the war here: battering the Taliban into a peace deal. The once ambitious American plans for ending the war are now being replaced by the far more modest goal of setting the stage for the Afghans to work out a deal among themselves in the years after most Western forces depart, and to ensure Pakistan is on board with any eventual settlement. Military and diplomatic officials here and in Washington said that despite attempts to engage directly with Taliban leaders this year, they now expect that any significant progress will come only after 2014, once the bulk of NATO troops have left. Yup after NATO troops leave the Taliban will take over.

182 Big tent. From the Denver Post: Young illegal immigrants who receive temporary work permits to stay in the United States under an executive order issued by President Barack Obama would not be deported under a Mitt Romney administration, the GOP presidential hopeful told The Denver Post Monday. "The people who have received the special visa that the president has put in place, which is a two-year visa, should expect that the visa would continue to be valid. I'm not going to take something that they've purchased," Romney said. "Before those visas have expired we will have the full immigration reform plan that I've proposed." ...Romney said in a sit-down interview with The Post aboard his campaign bus ahead of a Denver rally that he would work with Congress in the first year to pass permanent immigration reform legislation. He didn't furnish specifics on that plan, but has said in previous interviews that students who served in the military may get a path to citizenship. "I actually will propose a piece of legislation which will reform our immigration system to improve legal immigration so people don't have to hire lawyers to figure out how to get here legally," Romney said. "The president promised in his first year, his highest priority, that he would reform immigration and he didn't. And I will." http://www.denverpost.com/nationalpolitics/ ci_21676605/romney-wont-deport-young-illegals-who-have-temporary#ixzz2890s7Irl

191 @158. Since I live in a ring-town (formerly "farm town," now aspiring to "bedroom community"), I was never subjected to Civil Servant garbage collection. What we had was competing small firms, and the option of hauling your own to an open landfill if had not the means to contract.

EPA took care of the haul-your-own (there were Heavy Metals in those paint cans!!), and then the Mafia-backed Major Corporation That Cannot Be Named showed up. After a few "Hahz-yer-famlee?" encounters, the small private operators all decided as one that there were better opportunities in other industries.

After that it was no trick for the unionized firm to push through an additional income tax for "free" garbage pickup, and to get the monopoly contract from council. Now my garbage man is a Teamster with attitude and a faceful of piercings, who lets us know what he will and will not pick up. And the city administrators back his pronouncements with the force of law. We call him (behind his back -- you dares'nt offend him) "Jingles the Clown" (because of the sound when he walks, all those rings jangling together).

I don't know how you can see that as a victory for the free market.
That tax is more than ten times what I ever paid the contractor.

201 The AP pair’s narrative claiming that Obama is close to putting Romney away, which might as well have been drafted by an Obama campaign spinmeister (who knows? Maybe it was) has driven TV and other press coverage all week long. The Thursday morning trigger I mentioned in my opening paragraph was the arrival of two pieces of absolutely awful economic news demonstrating that the “recovery,” such as it is, has slowed from its already snail-like pace and, as James Pethokoukis wrote, entered “the recession red zone.”

In a rare third-estimate writedown, the government said that second-quarter economic growth was an annualized 1.3% instead of the already anemic 1.7% reported a month ago. After its issuance, Reuters noted: ”Data in hand for the third quarter suggest little improvement.” Even more troubling, durable goods orders in August fell by 13.3% to a raw level over 30% below their April 2010 value.

That’s funny, because the previous morning, AP White House Correspondent (note: not business or economics writer) Jim Kuhnhenn incoherently claimed in another piece – which appears to have Obama administration spin all over it — that economic results “are merging into a straighter line which, while below optimum performance, is moving in a positive direction for the country and for the president in his contest with Republican rival Mitt Romney.” Again, Thursday’s truth didn’t seem to matter. An AP dispatch from Christopher Rugaber that afternoon which surely drove TV news coverage that evening incorporated a relatively unimportant unemployment claims report showing decent week-to-week improvement and “suggested” that “the economy is sturdier than it might appear.” Nothing can be allowed to disturb the pre-determined, election-rigging narrative.

The Soviet Union’s old Pravda and Izvestia would be impressed at the media’s determination to have fake “fact checks” and preemptive narratives control the borders of what can be discussed between now and Election Day, all in the name of advancing the current regime’s reelection efforts. The country’s “journalists,” now serving as willing administration truth-twisting apparatchiks and campaign assistants, should be ashamed.

228 Two U.S. Border Patrol agents were shot, one fatally, Tuesday morning in an area in south Arizona known as a major drug-smuggling corridor, authorities said.

The identities of the agents were not immediately released, but the shooting occurred at the Brian Terry Station near Naco, Ariz., which is just south of Tucson. The station was named after an agent who was killed in the line of duty in December 2010. The area is considered a remote part of the state and sources tell Fox News that the shooting occurred at 1:50 a.m. local time and about 8 miles from the border.

The agents who were shot were on patrol with a third agent, who was not harmed, according to George McCubbin, president of the National Border Patrol Council, a union representing about 17,000 border patrol agents. The agents were on horseback at the time of the shooting.

230 Fair use my ass: (This woman got a Penndot ID card in anticipation that she would need it to vote this November. File photo by Cherri Gregg) By Cherri Gregg HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) — A Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court judge has ruled that the state’s controversial new voter ID law will stand, but voters without a valid picture ID card will still be able to cast their vote and have it counted this November. Judge Robert Simpson has effectively decided to postpone part of the law. Following his ruling, voters will still be asked for a valid voter ID at the poll. But if they don’t have it, they will still be able to cast their vote in the usual manner. The judge suspended the portion of the law that would have required voters without valid ID to cast what is called a “provisional” ballot, which would not be counted unless the voter could produce a valid photo ID within six days after the election. Judge Simpson says he viewed the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s recent directive (see related story) as ordering that he sever the illegal portion of the law concerning the provisional ballots. In his 16-page ruling, the judge also said that the Department of the Commonwealth can continue to educate voters on the ID requirement and encourage voters to obtain ID. He says voters must be able to get the “Department of State” ID as an ID of first resort for voting — that is, they don’t have to first be rejected for a Penndot driver’s license or non-driver ID. So, this November’s election will look very much like this past April’s primary, in which a “soft rollout” of the new law took place (related story). Voters were asked for ID by poll officials, but those without it could still vote. The order leaves open the possibility that the voter ID law will be in effect at future elections. An appeal is still possible. Today’s ruling comes just five weeks before the election (related story). Democrats and groups including the AARP and NAACP mounted a furious opposition to a law that Republicans say is necessary to prevent election fraud (another related story). Critics have accused Republicans of using old-fashioned Jim Crow tactics to steal the White House and have highlighted stories of otherwise qualified registered voters struggling to get a state photo ID (more related stories). The law was already a partisan lightning rod when a top Republican lawmaker boasted that it would allow GOP nominee Mitt Romney to beat President Obama in Pennsylvania (see related story). There's no way in hell that addictive drugs like meth are going to be legalized.  That's just reality.

Legalize pot, the cartels will focus on meth.  Legalize meth, they'll smuggle cocaine.  Legalize all drugs, they'll step up the smuggling of people, which is already a big source of their revenue.

Ending the "war on drugs" will no more eliminate cartel violence than the end of prohibition ended gang violence in the US.  The genie is already out of the bottle.

259 I live in the county because city RE taxes are roughly double the county's rate. On top of that, the city charges for trash collection while those in unincorporated areas get it free.

Competition for the contract works, here. Over the last 10 years we have had 3 different companies providing pickup. All have done a good job. Twice weekly trash can pickups plus a weekly recyclable pickup (not mandated) plus a weekly 'large other' pickup of tree limbs etc.

260 I am not in love with Romney's recent statement vis a vis immigration in the Denver Post. The reality is that we are at a zero sum game with illegals right now. 1.4 mill come in, 1.3 mill go out. 286 @267 You are right, but, to give Organized Crime its due, it predates the banning of alcohol by decades, in some places centuries. Prohibition was just another expansion opportunity for them. Like child's play, too.

My Louisianan aunt told me that black-hand societies were well established in N'Awlins early in the 19th century, already old. They ran persons in, and controlled access to dock labor and dock work. Murderous business, and very profitable. No liquor involved (excepting the leftover tradition of rum-running from colonial times).

The big money now...is in garbage.

300 I nearly pitched something through the tv last night when the guys on Monday Night Countdown were trying to blame Tebow for Sanchez sucking because Tebow decided to sign there and he should have known that would destroy Sanchez's confidence or some such.

Sanchez was a crybaby last year too. Sulked because Ryan had Mark Brunell taking first team snaps at practice.

I've been willing to cut Dirty Sanchez some slack, but I'm sick of the excuses. He looks way over his head out there and can't read coverages that even rookies can spot. His defenders still blame the O-Line even though other teams have worse protection. Blames the receivers even though he doesn't get the passes anywhere near them. He makes panic passes when he hears footsteps, and he doesn't know how to move around in the pocket. Mr Happy Feet

Tebow can't pass either, but at least he doesn't look scared and beaten in the huddle

352 Letter in the mail yesterday. Here is the headline, and it is from my health insurance company. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Your Medicare plan won't be offered in 2013. I wonder if the White House tried pressuring the insurers to not send out these letters until after the election. The notice I got does not mean the insurer does not have another plan for me. It means that the one I currently have, at $0 per month premium, is being eliminated. They have seven choices of plans available to me at between $60 and $250 monthly. This is the early phase of the $750 billion robbery of Medicare being perpetrated by Sebelius and Obama under their so-called Affordable Care Act. Affordable my ass. I know exactly what the deal is. I pay so Jose Lopez the leafblower can get his almost-free health insurance. What's Zero call it? Yeah. "Moving some resources around." To him, other peoples' money is "resources."

368 Christiana Figueres, the United NationsÂ’ top climate change official, expressed optimism Monday that skepticism of scientific views on global warming is on the wane in the United States.

Figueres, who is steering U.N. efforts to win a new global climate pact, said that the U.S. president will be forced to confront global warming regardless of who wins in November.

“You see both trends — both understanding that the climate is changing and that it is manmade — both trends are moving in the right direction,” said Figueres, the executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, at a news briefing.

Figueres cited figures from recent University of Texas polling on climate views in noting, “I think in general, skepticism around climate is abating.”

370 Two bits is a quarter ($.25). It derives from the piece of eight. They were made to be broken to make change. and were the dollar of their time. So two bits of a piece of eight equaled a quarter.

371 Oh, hey! The Turing-test-passing AoS Imaginary Friends in a Box RPG has been repaired! I was so desperate, I had to resort to actually reading, um... did you know there was, like, content (sometimes) as well as comments here? There's even this whole page where there's content with no comments at all, and stuff in the sidebars. This has been most educationamal. Seriously, whatever I did to break the comments, I'm sorry. I'm sure it was when I tried to imbed that VRML world in a square-bracketed frame tag.

I grill a lot OK! Actually it's the close proximity of the GoM to my casa, salt air is not good for well used grills.

375 Ingraham the Eeyore -- yow, I just tried it again last night and it was too much immediately. So I started dialing around and stumbled on some young man doing a late-night seemingly-conservative talk show, and heard this tidbit, which maybe has already been reported on AoS? That woman who won the lottery but stayed on welfare until she got caught? Died over the weekend from a drug overdose. I mean, I might have missed that if it hadn't been for the Laura Eeyoreham!

376 This is about the Democrat party creating an enormous class of the Perpetually Dependent and making sure they vote more than once per election to keep Democrats in power.
