UN Consultant: We Should Probably Ban Dante's Divine Comedy
— Ace

They say it's anti-semetic, racist, and homophobic.

I think their main complaint is that it's anti-Islamic, though. The rest are tossed on as window-dressing.

So now we'll have to ban it, or something.

Dante's Divine Comedy should be banned from schools as a racist and Islamophobic text rather than esteemed as one of the greatest achievements of Western poetry, according to a human rights organization that acts as a consultant for the United Nations.

"We do not advocate censorship or the burning of books, but we would like it acknowledged, clearly and unambiguously, that in the Divine Comedy there is racist, Islamophobic and anti-Semitic content," said Valentina Sereni, president of Gherush92, according to the Telegraph. "The Prophet Mohammed was subjected to a horrific punishment – his body was split from end to end so that his entrails dangled out, an image that offends Islamic culture," Sereni also said.

Incidentally, this movie is part of a broader effort to "to develop "an 'International Convention for the Protection of Cultural Diversity,' as the fundamental legal instrument in the battle against racism."

And also incidentally, a gay leader called this political correctness run amok.

15 There are innumerable sections of the Koran which I find to be offensive in the extreme: e.g. its rampant anti-semitism, the concept of 'honor killings', the concept women who are raped are subject to death by stoning (unless she can produce 4 male witnesses to attest that she was in fact raped, condoning pedophilia, and of course, a WHOLE BUNCH of others.

Can we now get the U.N. to FINALLY ban this repulsive book?

"We do not advocate censorship or the burning of books, but we want to censor this book, and possibly even burn it..."

There, I fixed that quote for you.

Just for you information, any time any organization starts out with the words "We truly believe in the need for a society to have free speech" or "We are fundamentally against censorship in every way" or "We here at X support a free, open exchange of dialogue", the next word out of their mouths is going to be "BUT" and then they are going to tell you all about how they want to squsih free speech, censor something, or end an open, free exchange of dialogue.

Oh, they will usually try to defend it by claiming that this, and ONLY this, particular speech is beyond the pale, but will fail to realize that you can't be FOR free speech while at the same time being against speech you think is offensive.  It doesn't work that way.

20 Is this person Muslim?  Why "the Prophet Mohammed"?

If you aren't Muslim, why would you refer to Mohammed as "the Prophet Mohammed".  Do non-Christians refer to Jesus Christ as "The Son of God"?

The proper way to describe him, if one were not being reverent, is "Mohammed, who Muslims revere as a prophet," or some other such wording.  But calling him "the Prophet Mohammed", with capital "P" for "Prophet" and all, you are stating that you adhere to Islam.

World-wide Dihmmitude is much further along than anyone realizes.  They have most media willingly referring to that savage, dishonest, murdering pedophile mohammed as "the Prophet Mohammed" and have most media afraid to make any jokes or snide comments about Islam whatsoever.

I don't think they have to worry, really.   The Divine Comedy     is too difficult for schoolchildren to read in today's illiterate society.   The best we can expect from our upcoming crop of high school graduates is that they MIGHT be able to finish a    Captain Underpants book if they move their lips    and use a bookmark so they don't lose their place overnight.

Anyway, my solution is for the U.N. to be relocated to Brussels or Geneva.  What would be nice would be a formal League of Free Nations composed of democratic and at least vaguely capitalistic countries.  South Korea, Japan, Israel, Canada, Australia; probably the U.K. and France, and so on.

It'd be like NATO, only better. It would have the gloss of advancing economic and political freedom while also being a forum for bombing the everloving shit out of dictators.

I would go a step further and say that leftists don't believe there is   such a thing as "human nature."   They believe that humanity is just a social construct, and we are all the product of our environment.    So if that environment can be made as      nonjudgmental as possible, then people will naturally become    nonjudgmental      themselves.     QED.

Which just proves how utterly, irrevocably, innately STUPID they are.

98 I've been waiting for an open thread to post this but OT: if you enjoy staying in a hotel with a swimming pool those days are over.  Every public access pool in the US must now have a permanent lift installed that can haul a disabled person into and out of the water.  Thanks to the DoJ issuing guidelines surrounding the ADA.

All 300,000+ public access pools must spend $7000-$20,000 to retrofit their pools.  Think all those small hotels will comply.  They'll simply close the pool.  Government, is there anything it can't do fuck up.

103 This is insane. Simply insane.

The Inferno is full of dreadful punishments - it's supposed to be scary! Dreadful things were done to Dante's political opponents, too, some of whom had living relatives at the time. They probably were offended, but they seem to have been able to contain themselves. The muslims will just have to bear up under the burden, too.

Even in the rather clunky translations we all read in high school, though (I'm thinking of Rossi, specifically), the description of the condition of the gates of the city of Dis is one of the great passages in all poetry.

133 20 Is this person Muslim? Why "the Prophet Mohammed"?

If you aren't Muslim, why would you refer to Mohammed as "the Prophet Mohammed". Do non-Christians refer to Jesus Christ as "The Son of God"?

I'm a little torn on this, if only because "Christ" is also a title that refers to Jesus' claims about himself.   We'd generally know who's talking about who if we just refer to "Jesus" or "Mohammed", but that extra title does make it very clear that we're referring to the religious figure and not just some random guy who shares the name.

A quick scan of news articles show that some do use "Jesus Christ" instead of just "Jesus".   I guess a fair comparison is to check if news articles always use "Prophet Mohammed", indicating a higher level of respect for Islam than for a religion that doesn't threaten to murder journalists over words.

"Your children are lovely, but..."

Actually, "the suicide bomber, Mohammed" is incorrect. Islamic leaders don't sacrifice their OWN lives, they talk their underlings into blowing themselves up. There's a reason why leaders like KSM, Bin Ladin, Saddam, Khaddafi, al Sadr, Zarqawi et al are all either captured or blown up while hiding in holes or safehouses. These cowardly cocksuckers don't have the balls to take to the field themselves unless their adversaries are unarmed and on their knees.

I thought a phobia is defined as  groundless fear.  If there was ever something to be feared, it's Islam in the 21st century.

Of course, it's only fearsome because our leaders pretend it's the religion of peace and allow this stealth invasion.  Personally I think we should ban it as an assault on the Constitution.  Tear down the mosques and deport /imprison anyone caught "practicing" or promoting it.

Yeah, I know.  A girl can dream, can't she?

185 So the whole of the Divine Comedy is supposed to be banned because of this passage? What if, like the copy I have, it's printed in three separate books? Are they saying that Purgatorio and Paradiso sections must be barred from the shelves as well, guilty by association?

Why can't they just have a sticker saying: Written around 1300, come ON, what did you expect?
