40 As tempting as it is to bring up a lot of the stuff that got buried by McCain and the media in 2008, I think its a mistake to go back to those issues.

We need to make this about the economy, the budget and  competitiveness.  We need to make Obama run on the last 4 years, not the 40 years before that.  Worse thing we can do to him is make him run on his record, and keep the distractions to a minimum.

67 I went to a cockfight in the D.R. once.  Had a lot of fun.

Cool thing about a rooster fight is that it typically goes back and forth, one besting the other, looks really uneven, the loser looks like it could be dead, then BOOM!, and a huge violent flurry of feathers occurs, and the loser bashes the shit out of the winner, and the fight goes the other way.  The almost-dead blood-covered loser is now on top.

Unlike in horse races, the betting happens throughout the fight, and before and after these wild turnarounds, the betting in the stands gets really furious.  And a lot of beer gets drunk.

This campaign is looking like that right now.

Moreover, several contemporaneous accounts of ObamaÂ’s background describe Obama as having been born in Hawaii. "the born in Hawaii" is a hyperlink to a 1990 NYT piece about the Harvard Law Review appointment of Obama-- First Black Elected to Head Harvard's Law Review By FOX BUTTERFIELD, Special to The New York Times Published: February 06, 1990 Correction Appended SIGN IN TO E-MAIL PRINT SINGLE-PAGE The Harvard Law Review, generally considered the most prestigious in the country, elected the first black president in its 104-year history today. 80 Gotta say that Ace is in danger of going Full Retard on this issue.  He's wrong, and most of the commenters here are right.

Ace, you are mistaking your own interest, which is driven by a partisan sense of aggrievement over Obama's easy ride by the MSM in 2008, for something that will actually help Romney win in November.  Which is more important, getting your political rocks off or pushing SCOAMF out of office?  I think you know the answer to this question, as it's one you asked a lot of angry GOP primary voters over the last few months.

Now you're falling into a similar trap.  Not only will Americans not care about this, it will hurt Romney for two reasons.  Firstly, because every single day that the focus of this campaign isn't on the economy, spending, and jobs is a LOST DAY.  But secondly, because people on the fence really, actually, don't give a shit and think these attacks are vaguely nasty.  Do I think they're out of line?  Fuck no.  But I'm a wild-eyed conservative Obama-loathing partisan.  Nobody needs to work for my vote.

The swing voters, and moderates, and reachable center-left guys, however?  Don't piss them off by pushing something completely unrelated to their concerns.  Spending time relitigating 2008 and Jeremiah Wright when there is so much else to talk about, namely 3.5 years of sheer failure, just comes off as desperation.  If Romney or the Super-PACs spent time pushing this angle, they would give off the vague stench of loserdom.

Posted by: Jeff B. at May 17, 2012 10:32 AM (xAJql)

81 Wouldn't be surprised if another, non-LA Times copy of the Rashid Khalidi tape surfaces. And Romney can disown this. But the Super Pac can still air the ads. SCOAMF always had surrogates sling his turds. Why not Mitt? And these turds are gold.

From Gallup:

----------------------------------------

John Kerry (60%) and Bob Dole (57%), who -- like Romney and Clinton -- faced incumbent presidents in the election, had higher favorable ratings after they became the presumptive nominees for their respective parties.

John McCain had the highest favorable rating of any recent nominee -- 67% in March 2008.

Thus proving that this "favorability" stuff is generally a bunch of useless garbage.

Which reminds me... weren't all of Bambi's roommates at Occidental foreign students from places like India?

How exactly does one end up with only foreign roommates when you're not going someplace like a tech school with a 75% foreign population?

121 Just keeping the rumor going regarding the possibility of a Wright ad will be sufficient to keep the Obama campaign chasing ghostsÂ….. with little or no cost to the GOP. If KlienÂ’s recordings are anything to go by, Wright has a bit of a grudge that will only grow with AxlerodÂ’s hysteria. Wright wants to be relevant not considered a diversion. Keep it going long enough, and Wright will implode very publicly all by himself.

126 Embracing Ricketts would have been bad for Romney. Independents don't care about this shit and it gives Obama a "shiny object" in which to use against him. The story was injected into the news cycle, Romney has clean hands, and not a dime was spent. There are some severely dumb fucks in this thread.

128 Like it or not there are comparisons between Romney and Obama on how they governed.Low hanging fruit like Rev. Wright is perfect for distinguishing the differences between the men. Going in on ideas will be a much, much tougher fight for Romney to win.Just can't wait for the health care comparisons. DEFINING who and what Obama is, is what is needed 24/7/365.He got a free pass the first time out, if he gets another free pass then the R's will snatch defeat from a sure victory.

Gladly. You are wrong.

Axelrod and company were taunting and baiting Romney with the McCain bullshit to try and drag him into the muck. Romney didn't bite.

Had he taken the bait, it would have taken Romney off-message and made him (to the average voter) appear to be dragging out attacks from the 2008 campaign. Most voters are not as astute as those here at AOS. This would have added to the Romney is a meanie meme.

As it is, Romney stayed above the fray while still saying, hey, there's mud over there, I just won't roll around in it.

The genius here may be Ricketts. It appears that he may have outsmarted Axelrod without ever spending a dime. Now the story is out there and Romney can continue to focus on the economy while looking presidential.

137 Anyone who thinks that the Dems/Media will not run ads about Mormonism, polygamy, Mitt "bullying" some gay guy in HS, is naive. Of course it will be done, ad nauseum.

The only way to stop it is to fight back. HARD. With Rev. Wright. I want to see Rev. Wright NOW, ranting about how he hates Whitey, with Obama applauding and cheering in reaction shots.

Politics aint beanbag. Unilateral disarmament = defeat. See John McCain.

Hit back, hard, and then hit HARDER. Destroy Obama's "likeability" and make Obama seem like a lying, White-hating radical (which in fact, he is). Romney will never "win" the likeability contest, that's not the point. The point is to destroy Obama's "Blackness advantage" (Black men have a tremendous advantage socially, as people pencil in via TV propaganda for decades greater charisma, intelligence, integrity, and the like) by revealing the nasty Obama underneath the "Preezy" charade.

Yeah, that's not nice, its ugly, what do you think a fight is? America is worth fighting for, and fighting hard. Nothing ought to be off limits. For no other reason than DETERRENCE WORKS. Reagan understood that.

Posted by: gnatsandcamels at May 17, 2012 01:53 PM (66k2+)

144 This was a smart move. We've known for some time that Romney was going to get the "weird religion" treatment. By taking a pass on Wright, he's inoculated himself--well, as much as one can--against Democratic smears of his own faith. Sure, they'll go after his Mormonism anyway, but at least he can claim that it's a one-sided, mean-spirited attack. He chose not to go after Obama's church, after all. I know, I wouldn't hang my election chances on it, either, and it's not a serious win, but had he gone after Wright (which meant next to nothing in 2008, anyway), it would've opened howls from the Dems about "his own religious affiliations." Savvy, I'd say.

Posted by: General Zod at May 17, 2012 05:04 PM (2+bRt)

145 For every time Romney gets attacked about his weird religion, Reid gets a pass for his own, the very same, weird religion. If you look up hypocrite in the dictionary, the word DEMOCRAT is there in all caps.

146 "All Democrats need do is cry "hatred" and everyone falls into line, like good little conditioned monkeys." No. Everyone doesn't fall into line. Ace and Hot Air and Powerline certainly do, but some don't. National Review does for the most part. Those that don't are called unhelpful and stupid, and offered condescending lectured to by those who do fall in line. Then they are disowned for not falling into line. Eat it. Or put your fingers in your ears and blame it on the loud mouthed craziness of Sarah Palin's hillbilly cult. Maybe you can make a Ron Paul Joke or tell us how Santorum was going to pope away all of our rubbers. Tell me that pointing this shit out AGAIN is helping Obama. Who the hell cares anymore?
