— Ace So, this is on PPV now. I remembered that Kurt Loder had given it a fairly positive review:
Wrath of the Titans stands tall in the pantheon of schlock—it’s schlock with brio, the best kind. And if I were a contemporary lad with no memory of Ray Harryhousen’s stop-motion Sinbads and Argonauts of 50 years ago, I think I might be pretty tickled by this clamorous CGI myth-fest.
So, I gave it a shot.
Given that it's a sequel to a reboot of a movie that was campy crap in the first place, it's pretty good. Bear in mind, every review must begin with the disclaimer: This is a review of Wrath of the Titans, for crying out loud, so what are you expecting?
But it's reasonably decent. First of all, the movie introduces another half-god, Agenor, son of Poseidon, as Perseus' buddy; Agenor is a little different in that he's comic relief, and a rogue.
It's a great character, the sort of character this sort of story desperately needs, and a character which is completely original and completely new to audiences. I mean, I've never seen a humorous half-god thief character team up with a more serious half-god warrior character before, ever, in my life.
That noted, it's still welcome. (I believe all good ideas should be ripped off at least five or six times.) This Agenor fella has a good line:
HELIUS: I've read you were a great disappointment.
AGENOR: That's right, I am great.
It's too bad I couldn't understand most of of his dialogue (or most other character's, either), because the bits and pieces I heard weren't bad at all.
The story's about an evil team-up between Hades (of course) and Ares (also of course). Hades is butthurt that Zeus gets all the glory, and Ares is butthurt that Zeus gives all the glory to his precious Perseus. So they undertake to release the Father of the Gods, Cronus, from Tarterus, the Bad Neighborhood of Hades (Hell, basically) to destroy the world.
And then the heroes have to travel the world and go into a dungeon. There they encounter Monster Manual pages 33 and 123, and Dieties & Demigods pages 88-89.
The special effects are pretty good. Especially Cronus, at the end, presented as a giant made of volcanic magma.
The writing seems to confuse Greek mythology with more recent religions -- ethical montheistic religions, like Christianity -- because it keeps talking about "forgiveness" and other not-so-Greek-mythological concepts, but I don't think anyone's watching this for some kind of accurate depiction of ancient Greek god-myths. I guess they did get the jealousy and spite of the "bad" gods right.
Overall, I gotta say, it did not suck. Expectations might have helped, because I expected it to suck. The first fifteen minutes did, in fact, suck, but then Autolycus, I mean Agenor, is introduced, and it gets better from there.
Two and half stars, just barely worth it, but still, worth it.

I'm always amused at people who look to popular entertainment for enlightenment or bleat about culture.
I think for a living. I think all the time. It's all that I do, from the mundane to the creative. When I relax, I watch cartoons, action movies and farcical comedies because I do this to relax.
How shallow, pointless and unintellectual must your life be that you look for profundity and culture in a non-interactive medium in your leisure time.

I watched "Clash of the Titans" on TNT- never seen this version before. Then I rented "Wrath" on PPV right afterwards.
They turned Calibos into Perseus' "father" - why does everything have to be a family feud these days? It was like GI Joe turning the Baroness into Duke's ex-girlfriend. Fuckin' really? That was stupid, then Cobra Commander being her brother? Really?
Clash sucked (still not sure why tried to make Medusa attractive, but oh well); but Wrath was just miserable.
Andromeda was a little princess in Clash, then a badass fighter in Wrath? mmhmm.
In Clash, Perseus wasn't indestructible or unkillable, rally. But in Wrath he gets the crap beaten out of him by Ares, then he looks at his son and is fine to defeat him? Bullshit.
And Cronus being a pussy fire giant? Who is defeated by swallowing a cock spear or whatever. Stupid.
However, I did like the idea that the Gods needed the humans to pray to them to maintain their power or they'd die. That was kinda interesting. Didn't really flesh that out too much, though.

Hermes is not just that emblem on the side of FTD vans. He is a son of Zeus by a minor goddess named Maia- that randy old goat Zeus strikes again. After leaving the care of Maia and escaping the duties of a phallic deity, Hermes did some cattle rustling of Apollo's herd before becoming the messenger of Zeus.

I tend to like action films.
I like action films with good special effects.
And I also like to see ancient mythology brought forward into current movies.
But my main quibble with 'Wrath of the Titans'.....is the writing.
You don't kill off Zeus and Poseidon!
These are ancient mythological fucking gods, dammit.
So you don't fucking kill them off!
Other than that....
Good action sequences, some good monsters.....well, except for depicting Kronos as a fiery rock monster.
I never envisioned Kronos like that.
But the actors did a good job....with what they were given.
And the hottness of Sam Worthington is always good to behold.

Was kinda funny how Zeus brought Io back to life at the end of Clash; then she was dead at the beginning of Wrath. And Perseus never said to Zeus, "Hey, dad, can you bring her back again or something?"
They didn't even bother giving her death a story or anything. It was just "meh, fate took her away." And Perseus then goes banging uglies with andromeda.

Artemis is the sister of Apollo and once again the offspring of an illicit union between Zeus and Leto. She is of the Moon and is the patroness of hunters, childbirth, fishermen, and unmarried girls. She seems the nicest of the deities doesn't she? Except when Zeus seduced one of her nymph companions, so Artemis turned Callisto into a bear. Or in a petty fit she set the Calydonian Boar upon Oeneus because he forgot to include her in his yearly sacrifices, by the end of that hunt there were many dead amongst Oeneus' family.

But the giant Kracken monster was great.

Yeah, viewed one way all the Olympus gods are good. The bad fellows are the Titans and monsters stuffed under volcanos.
Viewed another way virtually all of them were nasty fellows. I don't remember a myth where Ceres was crappy, but that's about all. Even Cupid is a jagoff.

Yeah, the spin in the myths is that he's no fun at parties, not that he's evil. He even married the one girl he carried off, and ended up letting her visit her mama half the year.

Agreed. Then again, I always thought the Greek gods were like a bunch of brats with too much power, so it's not too surprising none of them seemed "good" to me. I've always preferred the Norse pantheon and thought that it sucked that Greek mythology was all they ever taught in school.

Heck, Fafhrd and Grey Mouser. Not half-gods, but each had a god-sponsor.

127....By the end of his saga he was pulling Medusa out to keep from paying his dinner tab.
Harr.
Yeah, he used it a lot.
I think he finally had it made into a magic shield...or something...which he gave to the goddess who helped him out a lot.
Zeus's wife, Hera? I think.
It's been a while since I read all those classical stories.

At the end, Athena took the head and put it on her shield, Aegis.
Hera was no friend of any of Zeus' by blows or girlfriends.

"Well, yeah, if Obama's DoJ has anything to say about it. Open the floodgates, men!"
HA! I thought that, too. Battleground, indeed, Barry.

The Orestes Cycle is a good example since it covers the Trojan War. Agamemnon off to save his brother's cheating wife, Klytmnestra sleeping around while Agamemnon was away, Aggie coming home to get killed by his cheating wife over him sacrificing their eldest daughter so he could sack Troy. Electra helping Orestes in seeking revenge so he kills his own mother. Then the Furies hound him for such a brutal act. And it all wraps up with Orestes on trial for murdering his mother.

Even the Norse did not have good gods or evil gods. All the Gods were going to have to fight the bad Trolls and Giants and Big Dogs...and lose.
Not a Lotta laffs in Gotterdamerung.

And the dumbest part of that whole mermaids among us show was the teenager fake-footage of a creepy-almost-dead mermaid corpse that suddenly MOVES and GRABS one of the kids! NYAAAGH!
Lame.

Ah, thanks, Oldcat.
I was way off.
Like I said, it's been a while.....highschool, in fact, since I read those stories.

Well, Loki was certainly not-good even before his imprisonment. I've heard the theory that *knowing* they were going to lose eventualy was what made the Norse gods take the whole "godding" thing more seriously.

Uhm, I always thought that tricking one of his siblings into, permanently, killing another because he was jealous of their popularity seemed pretty close to evil.

I thought it was *why* he was imprisoned. It's been awhile though. in elementary school I pretty nearly had it all memorized, but haven't read any of the myths in a couple of decades.

Wait, did they just steal the story from Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief?

In fact, the original, cheesy stop-motion Clash with the clockwork owl was closer to the original stories.
