Vid: Hippo Charges Jeep
— Ace

I always hear that hippos are bad-tempered and aggressive and dangerous, but I never see it.

Except in movies, like Congo, where they try to Authenticate their movie by bragging that they know that hippos are dangerous. And of course that's fake.

So here's a hippo charging and head-butting a jeep or Land Rover or something.

Until the turn toward the fence behind which you're standing and run straight at it.  A lot less cute then.

I'm surprised I didn't need new pants after the time that happened to me.

On the other hand, if you're ever near Glen Rose, TX, take the time to go to Fossil Rim.  Take the guided tour and, if you're lucky, you might be in a very small group (last time we went, my wife and I were the only two on the tour).  You get to do much, much cooler stuff that way.

Some people just like to complain and FF spent the last year getting its sh!t in order.  I'm a browser abuser (tons of tabs) and FF11 handles most of what I throw at it, only getting cranky when I have too many other apps open (development tools, Vms running whole other OSes running other dev tools).

Just install firefox 11 in its own folder, and you should be able to keep your old version in case you think it sucks.

They're fearless, too.  I was filling the feeder on the deck last year and turned around and one was hovering inches from my face.  Startled me just a tad.

Hippopotamus. Greek.

hippos: horse
potamos: river

Put them together and you get Rosie O'Donnell.

Actually, I think they are more closely related to the whales. And I've read they taste good, if you don't let them lie around in the African sun for a couple of days prior to sampling.

113 Posted by: Jane D'oh at April 06, 2012 02:42 PM Yep. And I love the little buzzy sounds they make. BTW, that Great Blue Heron gal is up to five eggs. If you go to this website, http://www.livestream.com/cornellherons you can see her live and you can also watch clips of when the eggs were laid. It is something to see. You can tell she's doing it even though you can't see the egg. Turn the sound up and you can listen, too. Very soothing.

123 >>Why, was she screaming for a nerve block? lol. No, she ruffles her feathers and kind of puffs up a lot. Also, toward the end she opens her beak several times. I can't recall if the taped video has sound or not -- I don't remember hearing anything. The funny thing is during the lead up to egg #4, the daddy heron keeps stopping by from time to time with sticks. "Here honey, a nice stick for you!" I was surprised she didn't grab one of them and whack him with it!

Yeah, I looked it up (upthread) they kill more people per year than any other animal in Africa.  But insects kill more thanks to Rucklsnot from the EPA and Racheal "burn in hell" Carlson.
