Was Marilyn Monroe an Extra in 'When Worlds Collide'?
— rdbrewer

When Worlds Collide was released in August, 1951. At that time, Marilyn Monroe was taking bit parts and going to college. The Wikipedia entry for Monroe says this about her life and career at the time:

Following Monroe's success in these roles, Hyde negotiated a seven-year contract for her with 20th Century Fox, shortly before his death in December 1950.[33] It was at some time during this 1949–1950 period that Hyde arranged for her to have a slight bump of cartilage removed from her somewhat bulbous nose which further softened her appearance and accounts for the slight variation in look she had in films after 1950.

In 1951, Monroe enrolled at University of California, Los Angeles, where she studied literature and art appreciation.[34] During this time Monroe had minor parts in four films: the low-budget drama Home Town Story with Jeffrey Lynn and Alan Hale, Jr., and three comedies: As Young as You Feel with Monty Woolley and Thelma Ritter; Love Nest with June Haver and William Lundigan; and Let's Make It Legal with Claudette Colbert and Macdonald Carey, all of which were filmed on a moderate budget and only became mildly successful.[35] In March 1951, she appeared as a presenter at the 23rd Academy Awards ceremony.[36] In 1952, Monroe appeared on the cover of Look magazine wearing a Georgia Tech sweater as part of an article celebrating female enrollment to the school's main campus. In the early 1950s, Monroe unsuccessfully auditioned for the role of Daisy Mae in a proposed Li'l Abner television series based on the Al Capp comic strip, but the effort never materialized.[37]

The IMDB entry for Monroe says nothing about When Worlds Collide. Likewise, the entry for When Worlds Collide says nothing about her. The official website for Monroe says nothing. And several Google searches have come up empty. The movie was made at Paramount Studios, but that might have been before her contract with 20th Century Fox took effect. Or maybe the contract with Fox prohibited anyone from using her name in association with movies made at other studios at the time. Who knows?

But look at this picture. Her hair is the right color--Monroe's natural, pre-bottle blonde color. She has a widow's peak. And you can just see the mole on the right side of her face (her left). Certain lines in her face seem slightly different, the nose and maybe the chin, but the mole convinces me it's her. Also, it's plausible she would take a few bucks to sit in that chair for a while at that point in her career.

One more. Not so clear, but a slightly different expression.

If anyone knows how to get or make a higher resolution still, let me know. If you care to make one, email it to me, and I'll add it to the post. Also, if we have any trivia buffs who know the answer, please, let's hear it.

I took all of her scenes from the last few minutes of the movie and put them in one video. She does have a two-word line.

Here's a link to the full movie. Whether the actress appears earlier in the movie, I don't know. I don't recall seeing her, but I wasn't really looking.

If it's not her, she's an amazing lookalike.

Follow me on Twitter.

Update: Commenter "WisdomLover" has this to say:

There was a little sub-plot in the movie involving a young couple who were working on the project to build the space craft. The young man won the lottery to get on the ship to safety. The young woman did not. The young man returned his ticket for someone else to use, but the head of the program arranged for both to go (later sacrificing himself and denying a place for the crippled old millionaire who financed the project). The couple pictured is this young couple.

The female character's name is Julie Cummings.

The actress who played her is Judith Aames.

This was Aames' first role. Aames went on to be called Rachel Aames and played in the soap opera General Hospital through 2009 as Audrey March/Hardy.

I had a book of Marilyn photos that were shot pre-Hollywood, when she was a teen. I don't recall an especially bulbous nose. She looked fresh and lively and beautiful before the "Dream Factory" got its hooks in her. The excerpt makes it sound like she was a Karl Malden lookalike.

116 Yet another "Academic Elite Knows Best" themed movie about politics getting in the way of necessary steps to save humanity from certain destruction the Scientists can all see coming. Another key to the movie the industrialist that supports the Scientists funds the Ark to the new planet, saving humanity, is denied passage by the goody two shoes Scientist because in his opinion, despite having funded the spaceship, he was old crippled had no purpose in the new society, despite having promised him a seat for his support earlier.

Yep another lefty masterpiece. I could give a F* whether MM was in it or not.

I don't remember ever coming across any mention of MM in When Worlds Collide, and I've got a pretty extensive library of Monroe.  I'll take another look and see what I can find.  I don't think she would have done a bit at Paramount, because their policy on 'day extras' was generally to cast in-house.

In profile, it really doesn't look like her - Johnny Hyde would have paid for her plastic surgery by then and straightened out her jawline.  And the squeaky "We're here!" really isn't her, IMHO.

But as I said, I'll take another look in my books and see what I can find.

Anyone who doesn't think Monroe was all that hot, don't look at the stills.  She has a certain phony look to her photos, but watch any of a number of her films, "Some Like It Hot," or "7 Year Itch, to name just two."  The woman was something special.

Wow.  She looked a little like Julia Louis-Dreyfus when she (JL-D, I mean) was young.

I think the thing about Marilyn was that she seemed the embodiment of everything a mid-century American male found attractive.  She did have that "star quality," in that you eye followed her on screen, even if she was completely clothed and not doing anything suggestive.  See her small scene in "All About Eve."

Reminds me of the time the wife and I were looking to buy a house.  We were walking through a partially built model, with the top floor still in wooden framing.  We got back into our car and started driving away when she started fingering her cleavage (she was wearing a tank top at the time) saying something must have fallen in there, a piece of insulation maybe, when a spider crawled out of her top.  She was driving at the time and started screaming and lost all control of the car as she was trying dig the spider out of her clothes.  I had to grab the wheel and pull over before we crashed into someone's house.

I couldn't help it, but I laughed  like I never laughed before.

And yes, my right and left hands grew calloused in the following weeks.

162 There was a little sub-plot in the movie involving a young couple who were working on the project to build the space craft.

True story:  once at a book signing in the late 90's, early 00's or so, an old Vietnam vet was in the line and approached her.  He wasn't there for a signing.  He was there to show her a picture of her and him during the war when she was "in country" for a show (USO maybe?).  The vet just wanted to show her he hadn't forgotten her or that moment and just wanted to tell her how much she meant to him and his buddies.  The other people in line behind the vet started complaining, but Ann Margaret said something along the lines of "this is one of MY MEN, and I will do anything for one of MY MEN" and basically told the other people behind the vet to stand and wait until she was done.  She ended up taking another 15-20 minutes posing for new pics with the vet, talking about old times, and signing whatever the vet had on him, and sending him off with a hug and a kiss.

Interesting trivia: Cruise was nearly the least well-known of the lead performers in 'Losin' It.' The sole more obscure young actor was John P. Navin Jr., who had been in 'Taps' with Cruise. Navin went on to be the first customer at the bar 'n 'Cheers' but is turned away for being under age and trying to get several others present to buy him a beer, including his 'Losin' It' co-star Shelley Long.

309 Honestly, I kept waiting for him to get his, and he never did. He starts out alone, and ends up alone, and probably in prison. He should have let Bill Paxton pretend to be his brother so at least someone would understand him. Bill could have let us have some insight into his thinking but no, Cormac McCarthy style he gets killed and we get nothing. It was a long pyscho-drama, which I kind of like. It is extremely unlikely that any machine that does anything remotely important is still infected as the malware had some other major annoyance to it making it improbable that those machines are doing much.

The only part of "There Will be Blood" that I ever see is the "I drink your milkshake"/ bowling pin assault. Every damn time it's on tv, that's where it is when I click on it.

Oh I *get* what they were going for. I just think it makes for lousy cinema. I don't watch a movie to get two hours of solid plot development followed by a sudden halt to the plot, words appear "life F*king sucks, get used to it"-fade to black.

I had a similar reaction to "No Country for Old Men," both book and movie.  Josh Brolin is apparently the central character, and he's doing a good job staying ahead of that black-haired killer.  Then, 2/3 of the way in, the killer gets him -- and we're not shown the scene.  No, the good guy doesn't have to win -- but you gotta get the payoff.

The book was the same way, and McCarthy is one of those artsy types who dispenses with quotation marks.  Makes me claustrophobic.  I'll pass.

No but I will now Dang.

I'm just so sick of sequels and prequels and CGI and girls beating up men and all the boffo shit. I want to see characters studies and grown-up dialogue and situations and no super this or super that. It's a niche I find incredibly refreshing. I eat it up on the rare instances I can find it.

It even has some pretty conservative messages or themes in it.  I tend to watch some older movies to get away from all the CGI and "big is more" Hollywood crap.

438 I don't think the extra in "When Worlds Collide" (1951) [Paramount Pictures] is Marilyn Monroe. If it were Marilyn, it would be the only time she ever worked for Paramount Pictures. I see the resemblance, but when she turns to look at the man next to her, it doesn't look like Marilyn Monroe. It doesn't sound like Marilyn's voice, either. Marilyn had a very walk on, as a waitress, in "Dangerous Years" (1947) for 20th Century Fox. She was signed by 20th Century Fox in 1948 and had a bit part in "Scudda Hoo, Scudda Hay!" and then they didn't opt to pick up her contract. She was signed with Columbia in 1948 and made "Ladies Of The Chorus" (194 for them, then Columbia dropped her. Working without a contract, she had a walk-on role in the otherwise forgettable Marx Brothers film, "Love Happy" (1949) [Produced by Artists Alliance and Distributed by United Artists], a bit role in Right Cross (1950) [for MGM], and a small role in "The Fireball" (1950) [Produced by Thor Productions, Distributed by Fox Films] She had a small role in "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950) [another MGM production], which was pivotal for her career. The role in "The Asphalt Jungle" got her a second look by 20th Century Fox, where she was given a bit part as a chorus girl in "A Ticket To Tomahawk" (1950) and a brief role as an aspiring starlet in "All About Eve" (1950), which was another pivotal role for her career, in that 20th Century Fox was willing to sign her again, after that role. Marilyn was firmly back with 20th Century Fox in March of 1951, having signed a 7 year contract at that time, and she had small roles in "As Young As You Feel", "Love Nest", and "Let's Make It Legal" for 20th Century Fox in 1951. IMDb has 1951 as the year she made Home Town Story, which was an independent film, of sorts, funded by General Motors. It was released in May of 1951 and it was quite probably filmed before Marilyn signed her 7 year contract with 20th Century Fox. Marilyn was loaned out to R.K.O. Studios for "Clash By Night" by 20th Century Fox in 1952, so I suppose she could have been loaned out as an extra in 1951, but since "When Worlds Collide" was released in August of 1951, it seems unlikely that Marilyn could have worked as an extra on for a different film studio that year, having worked on four other films in 1951, three of which were for 20th Century Fox after having signed a 7 year contract. In 1952, Marilyn filmed "We're Not Married" [20th Century Fox], "Don't Bother To Knock" [20th Century Fox] (her first starring role), "O Henry's Full House" [20th Century Fox], and "Monkey Business" [20th Century Fox]. By 1953, Marilyn Monroe was a household mane and a major star, having made "Niagara" (1953), "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953) and "How To Marry A Millionaire" (1953) that year. Then she made "River Of No Return" (1954), "There's No Business Like Show Business" (1954), "The Seven Year Itch" (1955), and "Bus Stop" (1956), all of which were 20th Century Fox productions. After 1951, almost all of Marilyn's films were for 20th Century Fox, the exceptions being Clash By Night [for R.K.O. Studios, on loan from 20th Century Fox] (1952), "The Prince And The Showgirl" [for Marilyn Monroe Productions, Distributed by Warner Bros.] (1957), and "Some Like It Hot" (1959) and "The Misfits" (1960) [both of which were United Artists films]. The films Marilyn made for other studios after 1956 were only possible because Marilyn had successfully renegotiated her contract with 20th Century Fox in 1956, having walked out on her 20th Century Fox contract and created Marilyn Monroe Productions, a major feat in that era, which could only have been accomplished by a box office superstar like Marilyn Monroe. Unless "When Worlds Collide" was filmed before Marilyn signed her 7 year contract with 20th Century Fox in March of 1951, it's not likely that it's Marilyn Monroe.

If you've never read Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, let me save you a thousand pages or so.  It starts off with an interesting premise.  It is the final days of WWII and a young American officer is keeping track of his sexual conquests on a map of London.  The weird thing is that there is a high correlation between the marks on his map and V-2 strikes.  Then we are led on a mystery about what exactly it is that is in the secret warhead for the the super secret V-2 rocket that the Nazis are fixing up.   Along the way we are given many clues as regards its size, weight, and general appearance.  Then at the end of the book, one character tell the main searching character what it is but nobody tells the reader.  The end.

I recently saw Tootsie for the first time in at least twenty years. My mother thought my niece, who is crazy for musical theater, would dig it.

I was really struck by what an obnoxious jackass the Hoffman character was. I wanted him to fail and die in obscurity while the focus shifted to Bill Murray.

Yup. They break the social contract, they get the paper towel. Unless I'm feeling generous, in which case I'll capture them in a jar and let them go outside.

They never seem grateful when I do that, though; they almost seem to prefer the paper towel.

Go on a little! I'd like to hear more about this!

I sum up:

1. It's a novella, not a novel and it's even pushing it to call it a novella. It's much the same as Carrie. Carrie, at least, has the benefit of being a very fine example of a novella when the newspaper reporting portions that were added to pad it to slim novel length are removed. Brokeback is simply a long form story that is being pushed as a novel when it's just not.

2. The characters are horrible, horrible people. Seriously, just awful. It is not grandly, painfully heroically, terribly romantic to lie to your wife. That's not suffering for love. It's being a dick.  There is also no indication, at all, that these guys actually feel anything for anyone outside of themselves.  Selfishness?  Not sympathetic.

3. There is nothing romantic about rape.

4. Our Heroes were not trapped where they were. They could have gotten divorced. They could have moved. They could have done something to actually take control of their own lives instead of being fucking cowards.

5. THEY ARE NOT COWBOYS OMFG THEY AREN'T ARRRGGGHH

My beef. I mean really? The dude had a family, obviously women did something for him. But he's got this thing for for his buddy, whatever; What married guy doesn't have temptation from a hot chick he'd so like to bang from time to time? Maybe even an old flame who was OMG hot in the sack. You value your marriage and don't want to hurt your family, that is what makes men perform the unnatural act of being monogamous. They piss all over that concept with this film. I can't develop anything but derision for the characters as a result. They're jerks. It gets hard to feel sorry for them when you realize that.

523 Why do men act surprised when women don't look like what they did in their 30's at 30 years later. Unless you're going to have massive amounts of plastic surgery you won't look hot and perky and even then you'll never look like you're 30 again. Men age too. D'oh.

There is a big difference between somebody you see regularly and a person you only know from movies or TV. If they go away for a few years and reappear in a new project the mind can have difficulty accepting the passage of time. The characters go into stasis when we aren't looking and we expect the same of the actors.

Modern life presents a wide variety of situations our firmware just isn't equipped to process.

Oh, well, looks like I needn't have bothered looking things up, since Wisdom Lover nailed it.  As far as Taylor in Quo Vadis, I hadn't heard that.  There is a story, however, about The Ten Commandments - I quote from the wonderful DeMille biography Empire of Dreams, by Scott Eyman (pp. 502 - 3):

The night after DeMille's funeral, Ann del Valle (a DeMille publicist since the late 1920s) hosted a gathering for members of the DeMille unit.  Anne Bauchens (DeMille's film editor from 1918 until his death) was there and told a story of how DeMille had spotted someone lighting a cigarette as they passed through the Gates of Rameses during the Exodus in the final print of The Ten Commandments.  Bauchens believed that if DeMille saw it, it had to be there, so she ran the footage for two days straight, over and over again.  She never found the offending shot - no one ever has - but she had been worrying about that phantom cigarette for the last three years and would for the rest of her life.  Then she began to cry.

That's part of my complaint about NCfOM.  It wasn't clear, even when I watched it a second time.  The first time, I wasn't even sure Brolin's character was the one found dead in the motel in El Paso -- the body is in shadows, and we don't get a clear look at it in the morgue even when Tommy Lee Jones is standing there next to it.  It seemed as though Brolin's character vanished completely.  Crap storytelling.
