The compact BattleHawk Squad Level Loitering Munition is armed with a 40mm high-fragmentation charge. A historian of early Christianity at Harvard Divinity School has identified a scrap of papyrus that she says was written in Coptic in the fourth century and contains a phrase never seen in any piece of Scripture: “Jesus said to them, `My wife ...’ ”The faded papyrus fragment is smaller than a business card, with eight lines on one side, in black ink legible under a magnifying glass. Just below the line about Jesus having a wife, the papyrus includes a second provocative clause that purportedly says, “she will be able to be my disciple.”
The finding is being made public in Rome at an international meeting of Coptic scholars by the historian Karen L. King, who has published several books about new Gospel discoveries and is the first woman to hold the nationÂ’s oldest endowed chair, the Hollis professor of divinity.

If you're pulling out something 4th century which isn't backed up by any other, prior, Christian writing, then you're not using a contemporary source. Contemporary sourcing is highly important when discussing the historicity of Christianity.

It would matter because it would contradict parts of the Gospel accounts. Specifically, when Jesus "gave" his mother to John, he would have done the same regarding his wife (as women had no legal status of their own). He didn't, indicating he didn't have a wife.

I think I know why. Since 9/11 (this year) you have been asked to believe an "unprecedented" number of things that are pretty absurd. Here's a partial list:
1) Ambassador dead from "spontaneous" protestors with RPGs, mortars, and machine guns.
2) "Low profile" security in Benghazi was OK (in an area where random people allegedly walk around with RPGs, etc), and in no way reflects on Hillary, who is responsible for security there.
3) The Egyptian failure to provide security, which resulted in our Embassy being breached, is not a reflection on what they think of the US or its President.
4) The President is not responsible for embassy statements, even though representing the US is literally their job, and he personally appointed the ambassador. Obama apparently heads a different US govt than they do.
5) Crowds screaming "Death to America" in 22 countries does not relect an anti-American sentiment that would imply that US standing in the Arab world is the same as before or worse.
6) The exisitence of a short, amateurish, and obscure video clip is a reasonable reason for rioting, and said rioting is the fault of said clip's author, not of the rioters.
7) It is complete coincidence that it was 9/11, despite said clip being out for months.
There is a timeline for disputing US statements disrespecting free speech, and not following it is a "gaffe".
9) It's OK for the Pres to head off to fundraise in Vegas, and have his national security briefings mailed in, after the killing of a US ambassador, and during multiple attacks on US soil at various US embassies.
10) Bringing a guy in for questioning after midnight, surrounded by a dozen law enforcement officers and multiple news crews is a perfectly reasonable way to look into a sudden interest in possible white-collar parole violations, it is a complete coincidence that said individual had just appeared in the news for doing something that was completely legal, and it was no way an attempt to bully or intidate anybody out of their free speech rights by the very same authorities who are supposed to be defending them.
11) This is all bad for Romney.
It's been quite an assault on the rational mind.

Despite it being Harvard, I doubt that the purpose of this particular Divinity professor's research was to undermine Christianity. Perhaps it would be a BONUS for him/her/it, but that's a side issue. Certainly if I were an archaeologist or anthropologist of any sort I'd be dying to know what such an ancient fragment of text had to say, regardless of what the ultimate outcome would be.
So yes, I would open Pandora's box and flood the world with evil because I wanted to solve the ancient world's version of a sudoku.

It's a mistranslation. Happens all the time when translating from Aramaic to Coptic. What it actually says is, "'Jesus said to them, 'My wife... Morgan Fairchild, whom I hath seen naked... yea, that be the ticket...'"
More seriously, if it is genuine, my guess is it's some ancient dude's Bible fanfic. That sort of thing actually happened quite a bit in the ancient world. I've never heard of it happening specifically with the Bible, but it wouldn't be all that weird.

There are more legitimate texts from earlier periods using better qualified sources that say simply the opposite. But this researcher isn't interested in that. She interested in her own little parochial (oh the irony) piece of unqualified, poorly researched, poorly qualified piece of papyrus because it challenges basic truths and tenets of the Christian faith.
So yes, she is doing this for her own reasons and I believe the legitimacy is not only questionable, but her motives suspect.

Ah, yes, the Gnostics. The folks John was probably actually referring to when he mentioned "anti-Christ." (Which term never once appears in the book of Revelation, it appears only in the letters of John (I think 1 John, in fact), and refers to people who claim to be Christian but reject the divinity of Christ- that is: the Gnostics.)

Teachings of Jesus weren't even written down until 30 years after he died at the earliest. The Gospel of John is more like 70 years post-crucifixion. All four gospels were written by people who didn't know Jesus personally, didn't speak his language, and lived in Asia Minor, not Israel or Judea. They're also inconsistent among themselves on key facts and all were heavily influenced by Paul, who never met Jesus (at least not while Jesus was alive). Unless you accept the "inerrancy" stuff, all you can say about the gospels themselves is that they reflect strains of belief about Jesus by people who were far removed from him.

Oh, the papyrus is very interesting for what it could tell us about fourth century Egypt and the beliefs of some of the offshoots of Christianity. I would be very excited if I found it - in a field where a lot of the research is based on re-examination of known evidence, new data is always exciting. The problem is not the historian, who hasn't said anything to indicate that she is trying to undermione Christianity with it, and who knows that it isn't reliable as a guide to Jesus's life.
The problem is that now we have to explain to the Bill Maher crowd, in tedious detail, why it isn't a threat to Christianity. Aggravating.

Incorrect in all particulars. All of them. Including the bit where Paul (a member of the Sanhedran (sp?)) never met Jesus. To be an Apostle, someone had to see Christ both before and after his death. It's likely Paul (then Saul) was one of the people at the Crucifixion.
The Gospel of John was written, at the latest, by 68 AD, though it was committed to paper later than that, almost certainly. The same is true of the Gospel of Mark. In fact, the only Gospel not written by someone who knew Jesus personally is probably the Gospel of Luke- which is also the most historically reliable of the accounts.
Further, the Gospels are not at all inconsistent with each other, no more so than any other multiple view-point eye-witness testimony. In fact, it is the very fact that they are so similar and yet have different details that make us more sure they are legitimate- if they were all the same in every particular, it would be much more likely that they were written later by collaborating sources, instead of contemporaneously by people simply sharing their remembrances or (in one case) researching from original sources.

Of further importance and note, is that the 3rd and 4th centuries saw a rise of the gnostic movement (from Genao, to know) which encouraged various eccstatic rituals to induce visions, and this "special knowledge" became a sign of true belief. To say that she's a specialist in "gospels" lends itself towards this being a gnostic piece, in that the other well known gnostic gospels (which are not "hidden" or "secret" no matter what the "History" channel says), are from the same time period, and also contain texts about Jesus marrying. This is nothing new, nothing shocking, and also nothing relevant. It's academic sensationalism.

For the record, when I took Greek at the Presbyterian Church of America denominational college, a denomination that does not have female clergy, more than half the class was female. I believe that women are even welcome to attend seminary, although they cannot be ordained.

Not exactly. The Gospel According to Mark was likely written by John Mark, Peter's secretary, who had the straight dope from Peter, who knew a thing or two about Jesus and what He said and did. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke both used Mark extensively, like, about 85% of Mark, to write their own, expanded versions.
It is possible that The Gospel According to John was written by the community that the Apostle John founded in Asia Minor (Turkey), but it is not likely that it was written by John the Evangelist himself. The timing is an issue. It was very late, and his descriptions of even the countryside are mostly nonsense, so it was likely not an accurate depiction of actual events.
And all of this is yadda yadda yadda if you believe otherwise.

He was a Jewish Pharisee - a rabbi - who happened to be a Roman citizen due to ancestry. He certainly was not a Roman official, just educated.
Incidentally, the Gospel of John was written by someone who probably spoke Greek with a pronounced Aramaic accent - he uses the word and ("kai" in Greek, "v'-" in Aramaic or at least Hebrew) repeatedly, a characteristic of Aramaic syntax but not typical of Greek.

Yes, but one unheralded aspect of drones is the fact that they can act autonomously.
I don't know details of these particular drones, but a fair amount of the others are programmed to the extent you tell them "Fly to these coordinates, circle, send back video." And they do. Even if you lose telemetry to the drone.
If I recall correctly, one of the captured drones was basically because someone forgot the rule "And if you receive no further contact before you're 'bingo' on fuel, fly home." So... it ran out of gas and fell from the sky over Iran.
They don't harp on the "!!!Autonomous!!!" aspect because: (1) Skynet, and (2) at least under Bush, there had to be an explicit extra real-time order to "Fire!". So not -completely- autonomous. But... impressive.

New scholarship according to whom? If you look at the pattern of dating the Gospels over the past 150 years or so, you will notice that they change about as frequently as the seasons. The same can be said of textual criticism concerning authorship and location, so following a recent trend in "scholarship" can be hazardous.
There is not reason to suspect that my assertions were not true--the textual criticism of the Gospel According to Mark is fairly clearly the work of someone who had direct knowledge of the situation, and it is likely that it reflects the temperament of Peter. The portions of Mark that are reproduced in the other two synoptics are not in doubt either.
Perhaps you can refute on a point by point basis rather than a blanket "you're all wet" statement?

I TOTALLY disagree with this statement. Given a video image with feedback to guide a flyer, they can take your head off without any bombs being attached. I personally could without any video feed. I also know an R/C helicopter national champion that will flip his toy upside down and trim the buckhorn off your yard closer than you can mow. The whole sport is about control and getting a small grenade within danger distance isn't a problem.

1) I am willing to believe it's authentic but acknowledge the doubts. Some of those who doubt its authenticity only saw photographs, other scholars have seen the original and support it. However it should be known King is Luijendijk's Doktormutter. Not to impugn Luijendijk but that could be a factor.
2) In King's "defense" she is willing to accept evidence it's not authentic. Moreover she's been careful *not* to claim the fragment proves Jesus was married, only that some early Christians say he was.
3) Where King *does* have a bias is she opposes the "myth of origins", namely that good authentic Christian gospels were preserved and nasty heretical gospels were rightly cast aside. She seems to think this somewhat undermines early Christian teachings on marriage, sex, celibacy. She is a critic of nasty patriarchal orthodox Christianity.
4) Elsewhere King has suggested this 4th century Coptic fragment is based on a 2nd century Greek original. Granted that's not my area of expertise, but I don't think her evidence (similarities to words/phrases in Greek gospels) is sufficient.
5) See #3. Many critics of "orthodox" Christianity have a very distorted understanding of how the biblical canon developed. Many think it was sort of a conspiratorial decision made during Nicaea 325 and imposed by fiat on everyone, but that's a caricature. The canon was not much more than ratifying/confirming what Christians had already treated as Scripture since the early 100's. The criteria are remarkably consistent, and the gospel from which this fragment might have come simply wouldn't have measured up. There's a *reason* "Jesus had a wife" sort of writings were rejected.
