Morning, all!
We had an earthquake up here in New England last night; 4.0 centered just outside Hollis Center, Maine. I felt it all the way down here in central NH. Technically it happened at 7:12PM, so well before the debate began, but I like to imagine it was the Earth postulating an earth-shaking win for Romney.
That or it was another precursor to SMOD.

Quick media roundup. Not bad:
LA TIMES: President Obama's performance in Tuesday's second presidential debate was dramatically better than his outing in the first one earlier this month. Unfortunately for Democrats, Obama's Republican rival, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, didn't crumble in the face of the newly energized and forceful president.
NYT: President Obama, who concluded that he was "too polite" in his first debate with Romney, made sure no one would say that after their second. He interrupted, he scolded, he filibustered, he shook his head.
HuffPost: If commentators weren't saying Obama won the debate, they were calling it a draw -- an improvement over Obama's clear loss at the debate in Denver.
POLITICO: NBC News's David Gregory added that Romney was "strong, too," particularly on "wrapping the economic troubles of the last four years around the president's neck." But as many reporters and pundits said, Romney "stumbled on this issue of Libya, saying that the president didn't call it an act of it terror immediately."
The Washington Post / Erik Wemple That falsehood prompted an intervention -- prohibited by official debate rules! -- by Crowley, the moderator: "It -- he did in fact, sir."
Time / The Page Romney's errors on tone and Libya make him the debate loser, but his economic arguments and physical challenge to the incumbent might play better in the country than in the media filing center.

Fact is the transcript didn't show that he called the Benghanzi attack, a terror act. He generalized all attacks as acts of terror. As someone said earlier, I guess it depends on the meaning of is is.

Hindsight being 20/30 , I wish Romney would have conceded that Obama used acts of terror in general and then proceded to ask Crowley if she had the transcripts when Obama refused to call it an act of terror two weeks later when he was on the View.
That would have required the most awesome of debate prep ever to have that info in the back of your brain.

Romney "was right in the main." Romney was right.
OBAMA: I don't care how offensive this video was, it was terribly offensive and we should shun it.
HILLARY: This video is disgusting and reprehensible. It appears to have a deeply cynical purpose, to denigrate a great religion and to provoke rage.
CARNEY: Let's be clear. These protests were in reaction to a video that had spread to the region.
OBAMA: You had a video that was released by somebody who lives here, sort of a shadowy character, an extremely offensive video.
CARNEY: The unrest we've seen has been in reaction to a video.
OBAMA: A crude and disgusting video sparked outrage throughout the Muslim world.
RICE: It was a spontaneous, not a premeditated response, a direct result of a heinous and offensive video.
OBAMA: I know there are some who ask, "Why don't we just ban such a video?" The answer is enshrined in our laws. Our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech.

He knew damn well that it was an AQ attack, on US soil, on the 9/11 anniversary. He decided to try to lie his way out of those "inconvenient truths" with some bullshit excuse about a video, but as a precaution he added that little throw-away line at the very end of his remarks as a CYA just in case somebody (like Mitt) called him on his lies.
He's a disgrace for that alone, hiding behind Crowley's (expansive) apron folds makes him even more craven and disgraceful.

It's the economy, stupid
- James Carville, 1992
Twitter and the blogs are alive with hand wringing last night and this morning about "Romney's missed opportunities". He "wiffed" on Libya. To hear all the pundits talk, you would think Romney is now personally responsible for the death of an ambassador, since his answer was so bad. With all due respect to the pundit class living in their Washington bubble, waiting for Libya to explode like Watergate ... bullshit.
Romney won the debate, hands down. It wasn't even close.
No one will be going into the voting booth and voting for or against Obama because of the Libya.
The number one issue in this election has always been the economy and the debt crisis. This has been the case since January, and has been confirmed in poll after poll. Even when Obama had been leading in the polls, the economy was always the voter's top concern.
During the first debate, Romney was able to accomplish two very important things. First, he was able to talk directly to the voters, without media spin and obfuscation, to explain his plans for the economy. He was able to do this in simple terms that people could understand and relate to. Second, he was able to eliminate the "Scrooge McDuck" image that Obama's advertizing had crafted in the minds of a small, but electorally significant segment of the voters. Voters decided that they like him and he is an acceptable alternative to Obama. They also decided that they like Romney plans for the economy, better than Obama's promises.
As the debate ended, a lot of undecideds and independents made preliminary decisions to vote for Romney.
The Obama campaign was now in deep trouble, but never understood the real danger. While they focused on lies and Big Bird, they missed their key failure in the debate, and in their campaign in general. They have never offered specific plans for the second term. Obama and his advertising are long on saying they have a plan, but they never actually describe it. Romney on the other hand has now gotten his 5 point plan into the minds of the voters. They probably can't name all 5 points, but like Herman Cain and the 999 plan, everyone knows he has one.
Obama let 2 weeks of campaigning pass without correcting this fatal flaw in his campaign. Meanwhile the polls and swing states moved away from him and toward Romney. During that two week period, Obama lost Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia.
During the second debate, Romney needed to reinforce the preliminary decisions of those voters. Romney was able to do that both by continuing to explain his economic plan, and, in a surprise twist of turning a "gotcha" moment into a strong response, explaining why he will be different from Bush. I believe his Bush answer was the strongest moment of the night, negating years of Obama's "blame Bush" rhetoric.
Last night, Obama needed to change the direction of the campaign. He needed to get soft voters that have shifted to Romney to move back to him. That is a tough thing to do, but it was possible. He had to lay out a 2nd term agenda that would counter the Romney 5 point plan and give voters confidence that Obama knows how to fix a struggling economy.
He failed.
Both the CBS and CNN polls showed that while viewers narrowly gave Obama a "win" in the debate, he lost on the crucial point of stewardship of the economy. The CBS poll gave Romney a 65-35 win, while the CNN poll gave Romney a 54-40 win. Obama spent a lot of time talking about this election being a "choice", but he never articulated what voters would be choosing if they voted for him. This left the default answer to be Romney's, 4 more years like the last 4 years.
The discussion about Libya, Crowley, and Romney's "wiff" is interesting to the pundit class, but mostly irrelevant. It matters to the voter only as a confirming example of Obama's incompetence. The average voter (and even sophisticated voters) can't keep track of what happened and when. The detailed timelines that GOP strategists are whining about are not important to the voter, beyond proving again that Obama can't keep a story straight. The fact that we are discussing Bengazi at all this morning is a major problem for Obama. Whether or not he wins on the details of the Libya coverup doesn't matter. They are taking time away from the most important thing he needs to be doing.
He is continuing to fail to explain how he will address the voter's number one concern. He didn't do it last night. And every day that passes, Romney continues to solidify his support.
It is probably too late now for Obama. He lost his only chance to speak directly to the voters, and the final debate focused on foreign policy will not revisit the most important topic of this election.

True. But will be very relevant in the last debate. And Crowley has already ackowledged that Romney "was right in the main."
Obama's Clintonesque backdoor reference to "acts of terror" won the moment last night, but it won't be sustainable for a whole debate.

A plan to provide official photo identification cards for illegal immigrants moved easily through a Los Angeles City Council committee Tuesday with an array of supporters lauding it as a practical way to incorporate into civic life the area's large undocumented population. The photo ID would include the user's name, address, date of birth and possibly other identifying information.
It could be used by any resident who lacks acceptable documentation to open a bank account or access city services, such as libraries or work-training programs, officials said. Holders would be able to load the card with money, pay bills, make reservations and make purchases via debit transaction at ATM locations, city staff said. It would be up to Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck to decide whether patrol officers would accept it as an acceptable form of ID.
Besides undocumented immigrants, seniors who no longer drive, the homeless and transgender people would also benefit, officials said, because they often lack official ID as well. City staff said the program won't cost taxpayers anything because the third-party vendor would charge from $10 to $20 per card, and would also charge a few dollars a month if an applicant chooses to activate a debit card feature.

Sure.
Mr. Obama still has no tangible plans. He hasn't delivered on any of the promises from four years ago. But he needs more time?
Obama had 2 years of a super majority until people voted them out for doing nothing the people wanted and everything they wanted to do. What did he do in that time? Built another unaffordable entitlement we can't afford and nobody wants and added $6 trillion to the deficit.
Even the lowest information voter on the list gets that. Bring back the DOOM thread in a political wrapper. This should be article number one.

I like this idea as it makes it easier for ICE to identify the illegals. Of course this would assume that the government was actually interested in enforcing the law.

It will instead be milquetoast and fleeting. Candy Crowley will be 100% fine. Hell, she might even do another presidential debate in a few years.
The GOP likes to think one day the press will like them. Mitt outperformed Soetero, but it wasn't another trouncing. Let's be honest - the biggest fuckup of last night was sending Mitt to assault a razor-wire fenced bunker. They never should have agreed to the moderator, location, or that list of questions. Consider this a lesson for future elections - NO FUCKING PRESS AS MODERATORS. Get a fucking NFL referee to do it.

Candy Ass and Obama together managed together to fuck Hillary's "gift".
Obama accepted responsibility for NUTHIN' since he revised the entire scenario again. Obama refused and failed to answer the official debate question posed to him first by a "regular person" Townhall audience member who asked for the name of the specific government official that issued the denial for Benghazi Ambassador/Embassy security reinforcement. Blaming the Republican House members didn't fly, either.
Indeed, Benghazi is all the more "in your face" media time now, and the "video blame" won't disappear.
"Is" is? Candy pleading for a WillyJeff gimme.

Fuel is outrageous. The Middle East is on fire. Food is pricier, goods are pricier, folks have no work, and there is a general feeling of resentment at the sycophantic, proselytizing nitwits of the country who decry and demonize any man or woman who voice a weak, nervous concern that perhaps Obama is not as good as imagined.
When it is just the ballot and them, that resentment will find its outlet. No amount of trolling from Greg or Joe or whomever the troll of the week is can prevent this from happening, and the terror of that realization is all too real.

Last night Romney took on an entire room all by himself - his actual opponent Barky, the lard-ass moderator (the aptly named) Candy, and all 82 "undecideds" in the audience.
Actually, make that 81 people in the room. It does seem like the black gentleman who asked the question about the economy was truly undecided and wanted some answers about why the last 4 years have sucked so badly.
Barky can only "win" when somebody else does the work for him. Romney is a grownup who does it himself.

Boots up on desk, staring at my gray jeans at the moment, pondering if I've somehow missed the train to adulthood. Perhaps I need to start wearing a tie, too. Always a great idea to start each day by strapping something around your neck that can be used to strangle you. Brilliant, really.

What the "wizards of smart" (love that!) on the left don't realize is that watching the rigged debates makes the right more determined to work the phones, ring doorbells, and get their voters to the polls.
And because the left is basically lazy, which is why they are lefties in the first place and they vote for politicians that give them free stuff from somebody else's stash, well, lefties get all smug about a win in a rigged debate, and they are less likely to actually get around to voting.
So let them think they "won", and go back to sleep.

However, Romney's Five Point Plan fails to consider the disproportionate expenses that more wars will incur.
Romney is wrong to assert for US Military bombing of Syrians where the entire nation is completely integrated, no isolated pockets of "foes" in Syria's integrated population. No humanitarian benefits will result through more harm than good according to NATO Deputy Secretary-General Alexander R. Vershbow (August address in Washington) warning against both "no fly zone" and "protective zone", unfeasible in Syria. Given the NATO Mandate "protect citizens" there is "no clear sort of division" between loyalist and opposition forces in Syria. Vershbow said, "This is predominantly an urban conflict. You could do more collateral damage than good" if NATO attempted to strike Syrian forces from the air in protection of civilians." (Air Force Magazine, Oct 2012)
Whatever "jobs" that the war industry increases stateside can never compensate for the massive increase in our national debt from wars, especially when our NATO members fail to pay their share in wars that THEY demand our US Military conduct without their share of participation and their share of financial funding. Stocks are supposed to be refilled, and are not being refilled by our NATO members; only by US taxpayers.
How can you balance (or nearly) the budget and cut Middle American taxes while starting more wars than have already spread our Military so thin?
Compound that economic problem of overspending with the Federal Reserve bailing out the Euro destroying the US Dollar value.
"I won't write any checks to Europe" fails to prevent the Federal Reserve from doing that and worse.
As if Congress or the next President will contain their own over spending, let alone the Federal Reserve's over printing. Hope is not a plan.
There is no virtue from trusting a revisionist messiah. Hitler, Mussolini and Obama are among those who have proven that truth.
Yes. I will vote for Romney, the candidate who earns good grades from what research he accomplishes. I would that his foreign policy advisers were not limited to neoconservatives. Nation building by any other name is a disaster for the American tax paying citizenry and an offensive constitutional abuse of our great Military.
