Anyone else sick of the announcers and coaches and players using the replacement refs as their excuse for everything.  Frankly I have not noticed any significant difference except for the cattawalling by the announcers and some whiney players on the losing side.  The replacement refs are not making any more mistakes than the regular refs.  They are just highlighted more.

Tweak the language as necessary. It won't guarantee victory, but it will reframe the Left v. Right debate and end this nonsense in which stating the truth actually costs us support. And don't wait until the next f-cking election to do it.

Whenever he brings Jon onto his show, I can't help but think that he intentionally shoots for a tie.  Keep the tally close.  Keep people on both teams wanting one more...just one more debate, so they can finally see "their guy" take it home.

 

When he's got  Jon on his show, he wants to keep his ratings high.  Plus, if he only slightly-beats here, slightly-loses-to   there with Jon,  then maybe he might appeal to some of the pro-Jon viewers that tuned in.  He and Jon don't compete in the same time-slot, so he wins the viewer, who now watches both.  If he absolutely POUNDS Jon, and sends him  running off the set crying, then that viewer will never tune in again.

 

Maybe if this is on "neutral territory" with no reliance on one's show or the other's show, then Bill won't  do this, and actually feel like mopping the floor with his opponent.

Let's be honest, a lot of older people don't understand social networking. It's not a bad thing, but that's just the way it is. They haven't grown up with it, they don't understand the full power of what they say on these sights. Information travels so fast now. A lot of them are still trying to work their way through it, I see a lot more stupid stuff from 40+ age then I think I should see on sites like facebook and twitter.

Since she works at a public community college,    and is therefore a state employee,      it's a pretty cut and dry violation of Florida's election laws.   As Campus Reform quotes:

I liked that he was on top of the story with the press avail in LA last night.  Every story I've heard today has those comments last night about "please release the whole video" included.  If he had said something bad or had something to hide, why ask for the whole thing to be released, thinks the average listener.  That's a good thing.

One of two possibilities: Romney's people fed the story to MJ through duplicity counting on the libs to run it when the libs thought it necessary to change the topic from an inevitable Obama fuck-up.  Or, MJ legitimately undercovered Romney and released it to change the topic from Obama;s fuck-ups, but sooner than anticipated. 

In any case, it helps Romney where he needs help and the libs are too stupid to understand that.  Putting the Pali tape out today helps Romney even more as the ME burns and the Obama dead-ambassador story unravels.  Makes Romney look like the sensible one for making a "water is wet" statement about the Palis.

So, yes, they are biased --- for the refs. I doubt anyone believes the refs don't do things to prepare. We know (because their rep said so) they spend a couple of weeks coming up to speed and doing physical conditioning. That's why just before week 1 the refs said they would not be ready for the first week of games even if the lockout ended. But even without looking I know from years of watching football that these guys were mostly drawn from professional careers -- lawyers and such. This is a second gig for most of them. I think it is beyond tone deaf for the officials to be demanding guaranteed pensions for a part-time, second career job. They should be wiling to take the 401k offer.

It's a very messy thing these days because almost every college/university accepts federal funds, so they give the feds a toehold to muck around on these issues. I think there are a few places that have managed to keep that at bay and run their institutions as they see fit, but I'm not sure about that. Frankly, I'm kind of amazed BYU gets away with some of the things that they require in their code of conduct. Pretty sure that they accept federal research funds, but maybe they don't accept Pell grants etc because the students' tuition is subsidized by the church. Maybe that's enough of to keep them out of federal regulation.

I mean, who did he think he was, ruining my sparring match by freaking agreeing with me? But, aside from not really liking that Romney is a Mormon, he said that his decision was based on, of all things, economics and prospects for his business. Without revealing too much personal information about him, his business caters to low to middle class families in an area with a large (nearly 50%) Latino population. He just said matter of factly (to paraphrase) - "I'm a numbers guy - and my numbers have been better under Obama, just like they were under Clinton. If those guys keep my customers coming through the door, I'll pay the 35% tax and not blink." He added that a big part of it was that he can take (the equivalent of) food stamps for his business as well, so in a way the artificially-expanded middle class as a result of low-income entitlements is a big help to his bottom line. As long as a government is committed to maintaining a certain level of support for low income people, he will maintain the volume he needs to succeed as a business. In addition, he provides health care voluntarily anyway for all of his full-time employees ("It's just smart", he says, "because it allows me to find the right people, keep them healthy and happy, and keep them around."), so he's really not worried about Obamacare running him out of business - it will actually save him money to the extent that it makes health care cheaper. On the Latino population, he also worried about what the immigration crusade mentality will do to his customer and employee base. This includes losing business from undocumented, poorly documented, or even legally documented families depending on how far the anti-immigration people (which includes Romney and more prominently Ryan) take that. In an area with a 50% latino base, this could devastate him. He also related a story to me of one of his regular employees, a green card holder who is paying the $800 to get her citizenship process dealt with. She was really nervous about the test and figuring out where to get the cash to go through the process, but she was more nervous about what people who advise that community are saying will likely happen if Romney is elected. Though most people think Obama is going to win, she didn't want to take the chance of being too far back in the line for citizenship that would rapidly form if Romney is elected and the Republicans start trying to get rid of Mexicans. Life is Interesting. Vote for Obama.

Y-not, if    the allegations are true then yes, it was illegal.   See my comment   @132.   Were she employed by a private institution the legality question    is less clear-cut.   But as a public employee at a state college (community colleges are state-operated), it's illegal for an instructor to use their role to influence an election.

I suspect all    private    universities and/or colleges    have enforceable codes of conduct for their faculty and staff.   The teeth of that enforcement may be considerably stronger in one school as opposed to another, and the code of conduct itself may be looser    in one school than another.   I would imagine "Telling your students who to vote for and making them sign a pledge" would be    considered a serious violation, similar to sexual harassment.

The problem was created and sustained by expansive government. That's the source of the incentive to not get married etc. You aren't going to be able to talk people into marriage any better than you can talk them into being self-sufficient, responsible, hard working, drug free, healthy, etc., etc. You have to remove the incentive to not be any of those things.

 

You're not quite getting it. We're not talking to THEM. We appealing to the voters who married before they had kids, and the ones who plan to marry. They suspect that a growing percentage of the welfare state is going to people who are not in need through no fault of their own, but through a selfish decision to start a family without a spouse, but no party has tapped into that suspicion.

 

You tell me how the GOP survives when single parenthood is the majority (out of wedlock births are now 40%.) Tell me who votes Republican in that America, when the majority are, statistically, more likely to need government aid.

 

I'd really like to know.

It really depends on the school's administration.   If you have a school    with an administration that views the students as customers and the faculty and staff as employees meant to cater to that student, then the chances of a student's complaint causing problems for an instructor are    fairly high.   This is good in cases like this one, where the instructor clearly did something wrong.   But college kids are just as likely to go to the Dean or the University President to complain because "Professor    Smith gave me an F because she said I plagiarized my thesis!   It's not fair!"  as they are to go    to upper administration with a genuine complaint.  

 

If,   on the other hand,   the school's administration views the student/school relationship as "an   opportunity, not a right," then    instructors are less likely to be reprimanded on the word of a student .    But you're also more likely to have students who feel their voices are unheard and their money is   being taken in exchange for a     demeaning educational experience.  

 

It all lies with the administration.   You don't want a squishy administrator -- you want one who can tell the difference between shit and shinola.   Unfortunately,   a lot of college Deans and    Presidents and other administrators are too busy fussing over fundraising, faculty and staff salaries, and    fighting with    legislators to really give cases of faculty or student malfeasance the proper amount of scrutiny.

RPI and Hudson Valley CC had open cross registration.   When I was there, HVCC's engineering science program made it a point to use the same text books RPI used.  If an RPI course was full, RPI students overflowed into HVCC and vise versa.  A lot of HVCC students took electives at RPI at CC tuition rates.

RPI was cool with this arrangement.  The HVCC people transferring into RPI for years 3-4 tended to see a GPA increase after the transfer, while transfers from other CC's tended to see a GPA decline.  RPI knew if they sent a student over to HVCC for a year 1-2 course, they'd come back better off than if they'd taken it at RPI.

It depends on the colleges.      Here in NH     sometimes it feels like you have to sacrifice your firstborn to get    credits to transfer from one institution to another,     ESPECIALLY going from the community colleges to UNH     (which should be a no-brainer).      And the private unis are even worse.

 

It's not done to be deliberately obstructive,      though.   Depending on the instructor,  the curriculum, the syllabus,   the pre-requisites, and everything else that    one college uses,   that student's learning experience may not be sufficient to transfer to another college that has a different curriculum, syllabus, and pre-requisites.   There's a lot of work done behind the scenes between schools to make credit transfers less of a headache, but it's never going to be easy.

HVCC was a major feeder for RPI, so there was a lot of course coordination.  I think people did better at the CC than RPI because the CC profs were GOOD, and you could get access to them a lot easier than the RPI profs.

If the 4-year+ colleges viewed CC's as transfer feeders like the New York CC system and SUNY do, a lot of problems lessen.  Any decent 4 year college should have a significant washout rate among undergrads, and needs replacement bodies to fill those dropout slots.

UC San Diego's undergrad dropout rate was about 75%.  My incoming grad school class's dropout rate was 50% after the 1st semester.  Back in the 80's they weren't giving degrees away with a box of Cracker Jacks ;->
