Welcome To The Fleet, USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112)
— andy

Yesterday the Navy commissioned its newest warship, a guided-missile destroyer named after Navy Lt. Michael P. Murphy (SEAL). Murphy, who was the first Medal of Honor recipient from the Afghanistan War, lost his life in 2005 after he chose to expose his position to the enemy in order to call in assistance for his heavily-outnumbered team.

The story of Michael Murphy's life is retold in the book Seal of Honor, and the story of the battle in which he lost his life is recounted in Lone Survivor, which is currently being made into a film.

Murphy's Medal of Honor citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as the leader of a special reconnaissance element with Naval Special Warfare Task Unit Afghanistan on 27 and 28 June 2005. While leading a mission to locate a high-level anti-coalition militia leader, Lieutenant Murphy demonstrated extraordinary heroism in the face of grave danger in the vicinity of Asadabad, Konar Province, Afghanistan. On 28 June 2005, operating in an extremely rugged enemy-controlled area, Lieutenant Murphy's team was discovered by anti-coalition militia sympathizers, who revealed their position to Taliban fighters. As a result, between 30 and 40 enemy fighters besieged his four-member team. Demonstrating exceptional resolve, Lieutenant Murphy valiantly led his men in engaging the large enemy force. The ensuing fierce firefight resulted in numerous enemy casualties, as well as the wounding of all four members of the team. Ignoring his own wounds and demonstrating exceptional composure, Lieutenant Murphy continued to lead and encourage his men. When the primary communicator fell mortally wounded, Lieutenant Murphy repeatedly attempted to call for assistance for his beleaguered teammates. Realizing the impossibility of communicating in the extreme terrain, and in the face of almost certain death, he fought his way into open terrain to gain a better position to transmit a call. This deliberate, heroic act deprived him of cover, exposing him to direct enemy fire. Finally achieving contact with his Headquarters, Lieutenant Murphy maintained his exposed position while he provided his location and requested immediate support for his team. In his final act of bravery, he continued to engage the enemy until he was mortally wounded, gallantly giving his life for his country and for the cause of freedom. By his selfless leadership, courageous actions, and extraordinary devotion to duty, Lieutenant Murphy reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

May God watch over the USS Michael Murphy and all who sail on her.

Mandel is a tough wiry little hombre, and not just some "nice Jewish boy".

The adds against him from the Shithead Brown campaign are negative and pretty nasty.

I really fucking hate Brown.  He has been and always was a lying sack of shit. In the 80's when he was Secretary of State,  it was widely suspected that there was drug dealing out of his office, said a State Highway Patrol investigation. Yet they never concluded the investigation and handed off to a Grand Jury.

Brown's protege, Jennifer Brunner, was another crooked liar who went a long way (as Secretary of State) to letting the election of 2008 get totally screwed up in 2008 in favor of Obama

Uh, I carry no brief for Ray Mabus, who is one of the worst in a long string of crummy SECNAVs, but he named a ship after _Cesar_ Chavez, the Chicano farm labor activist. Not after Hugo Chavez the Venezuelan tyrant.

Cesar Chavez did serve in the USN,

Although he openly called those the worst years of his life -- hated the Navy -- which makes the honoring of him with a ship pretty fucking tin-eared. Just what you would expect from Barky's bunch.

I personally believe that all Naval vessels up to CVN class should without exception  be named after members of the Navy and USMC who have died in service. No shortage of brave souls worth commemorating.

I've been looking forward to the 'Lone Survivor' movie...from Marcus Luttrel's book.

With Peter Berg doing the directing, I have hopes of it being done right.

Berg's 'Battleship' movie was great, imho...but it was fiction.

Actor Taylor Kitsch...who starred in 'Battleship'...will play Michael Murphy.

It's cool that, in 'Battleship', Kitsch used a destroyer for most of the fighting against the aliens.

And now...he is cast as Murphy, for whom a destroyer has now been named, to honor this fallen hero.

Yesterday...10/05/12, someone snuck into the site in NM where they are filming.

The assholes damaged and looted the movie site...making off with items used for creating explosions.

Link in my name, for the story.

In faith we send her on her way;
In faith to thee we humbly pray:
O hear from heaven our sailor's cry
And watch and guard her from on high!

And when at length her course is run,
Her work for home and country done,

Let not one life in thee have failed;

83 I stopped for gas after firing my evil black rifle at the range last week. A kid was pumping gas in his truck and noticed a Chief's crow on my back window. He said 'I'm in the Navy, too!' (He is in DEP to ship in Apr 2013). He was very proud of himself. Our Navy turns 237 years old this week. I only served 22 of those years spread over the timespan 1968-1996. And we had beards until 1982 in the Seabees, but of course most of us were not certified badasses like the SEAL's. Thank you for your sacrifice, Murph. And you, kid? Enjoy your tour and come home safe again to Texas.
