I can attest to this.   I got in a bit of an argument on my local TV news station's website yesterday with an idiot libtard about this very topic.   The article was about how McDonald's held a one-day hiring spree in the   northeast yesterday during which they intended to hire 1800 people.  I and another commenter noted that 1800    jobs at McDonald's would have been laughed off under Reagan, but under Obama this is    GIGANTIC AMAZING news.   "Good on McDonald's for hiring in this atrocious economy," I said.  "But bad on the media for their incurable double standard."

 

Then along comes some douche,   I can't even remember his name so I'm just going to call him Douche, who responded, "Typical Republicans!!  Always got to be gloomy!   Any good news for Obama is bad news for you!!  Only Republicans would say new jobs is a BAD thing!!"      That's a paraphrase, but the gist and tone are the same, right down to the exclamation points.  There was no attempt by    Douche to respond to the argument I'd made that the media's double standard is pathetic and transparent.   It was all, "You don't    want new joooooobs!"   I responded by telling him that his ignorance shows just how sorry the state of our country is today.

 

Meanwhile another commenter had posted a comment asking why the news station hadn't posted a story about Bank of America's decision to speed up its shutdown of branches, to the tune of 16,000    layoffs by December.      Up pops Douche again.   "Stupid Republicans!   You just want all the negativity because you know any good economic news is baaaaad for Romney and good for Obama!  You don't want people to have jobs because that means Obama's going to be re-elected!   Go away and take your doom and gloom with you!"

 

To which I responded, "Douche,       answer me this.   Which is a bigger story?   McDonald's adding 1800 jobs, or Bank of America CUTTING 16,000?   Just in time for Christmas, by the way, so YAY for those families!      And     before you answer, I want you to consider what types     of jobs are being added and what types     of jobs are being lost.  Then you can speak."

 

I never went back to check    what his response was because I didn't care, but it was amazing to read.   They really are that clueless.

I can think of a few folks up here on the (supposed) R side who think it's a matter of principle to write in or vote Paul, etc, primarily because they'd rather see the R party become the Libertarian party (just as the dems have fallen prey to those who knew the CPUSA would never get enough winning votes to do much good), and also because a very few of them seem to be more comfortable railing as underdogs than winning and having to actually govern. We have one guy who is born again Tea Party Libertarian (very small group, consisting primarily of him, his wife and about three others, among the several "official" branded personal TPs in the region) actually WANTS Rs to lose even if it means more O, because that will teach the rest of us to do it his way and vote for his candidates (most of whom pull maybe 20% in primaries or even conventions). He is a definite turd in the punchbowl, who I can see going Goode if he doesn't go Paul or write in. he certainly won't do Romney, and if that means Obama oh well, we should have listened to him.

 

Kelley, what's your take on Goode? My personal opinion is that he won't have enough pull outside of a certain area and a certain committed protest vote to do much, but I'm up here in NoVA and an R who wins here isn't the same as an R some other places in the state. Thoughts?

There could be secret information that leads the pollsters to believe more democrats will turn out this election than in 2008.

 

Just because unemployment is over 8%, the debt is 16 trillion, gas is $4 a gallon and food prices are up doesn't mean people are ready for change. Obama could be the first president with these numbers to be reelected.

 

The 2010 midterms and the Walker recall elections could have been flukes. It's possible that the country is basically liberal and these republican wins were coincidences.

 

You have to remember, we aren't as smart as the media, we don't live in Manhatten, we don't attend the right cocktail parties or know the right people, so how could we possibly be right and they be wrong?

 

I think some of you should temper your criticism of the media by remembering who you are and who THEY are.

And that's what GOVERNMENT is for, to invest in these platforms above the 50% water in the glass, and Barack Obama knows this!

Isn't this just another data point that confirms what Romney said about the 47%?  If you're on the government tit, your financial situation hasn't changed since Obama was elected, and it may have even improved if you are now getting food stamps because the government threw out the work requirement.   If you live in a poor neighborhood where everyone is on the dole, nobody owns a house, etc. you don't see the "economy" as bad.  If you are a single 30-something living in a big city and you have a decent job, and all your single friends do too, you don't see the economy as bad either.  If you're a young couple with jobs who were able to buy that first house because prices dropped by 40% and you got a 3.5% mortgage, it's a GREAT economy for you. 

 

The media have helped tremendously by not covering the economic disaster.  More people would think the economy overall is bad even if their own situation isn't, if we had the usual nightly drumbeat about unemployment and sob stories on the news every night.  But the unemployed have been invisible in this recession, so people fall back on what they know in their own lives and neighborhoods.  A whole lot of people really don't know anyone who is unemployed or has an underwater mortgage, and thanks to our state-run media they don't know such people exist.
