— CAC A lot of bloviating from lefties lately about an Obama "landslide". Some, when polls were more favorable, from conservatives about a Republican one. But what would one look like, exactly? Are the "mega-landslide" elections of 1964, 1972, 1980, 1984, and 1988 even possible at this point?
The short answer is no. In the past, states like New York, Texas, and California played the role of "big prize" purple states. So if a President or a candidate played their cards right, scoring a 400-500 electoral vote tsunami was very possible. There is only one state these days with more than 20 electoral votes that plays the cheating girlfriend, and that is that dirty skank we call Florida. Smaller states hold more sway in national elections these days, and the big states have fallen on one side of the ideological divide or the other.
Don't believe me? Well let's look at the absolute minimum states President Obama and his Republican challenger will carry:

Map courtesy 270towin.com
Simple math shows the 400+ electoral vote bloodbaths are exceptionally hard to achieve. While scoring a bruising victory in the high 300s is easily doable (happening in 3 of the last 5 elections), the awe-inspiring bone-crushing victories of yesteryear just aren't possible anymore.
Lets be very realistic- even these maps are the absolute extreme. Nobody expects the Republican to lose Georgia or Arizona, nor for the President to lose Massachusetts. I had to really, really, really inhale a lot of ether to close in on, and still fall votes short of, 400. Try it yourself, keeping in mind the mindset of the voters in these hard-red and hard-blue states.
So when someone comments matter-of-factly with "oh so-and-so will be lucky to carry 5 states", remember what your pretend expert here at AoS is telling you. It is difficult to predict even semi-landslides months out even when there seems to be a serious rebound for an incumbant or momentum for a challenger. Take this Harris Poll released in January of 1980, which showed a 65%-31% landslide preference...for Jimmy Carter.
Unless of course election night comes and the Republican wins 48 states, in which case I will quietly edit this post and replace it with very questionable images.
After I win the Powerball and Mega Millions the week before and have to file a restraining order against Christina Hendricks for constantly throwing herself naked against my front door. That will be a very busy hypothetical.

You're being ridiculous, CAC, as is everyone who keeps trotting out that same poll over and over again.
Perhaps you remember an event that began in late 1979 that gave Carter a big (but temporary) "rally around the flag" bump in the polls? Anything ring a bell?

Funny you bring that up. Because the poll released by the same firm when that happened gave Reagan a 50-45 lead over Carter as a result of it.

Something that gives me a little bit of hope, is the fact that quite a few 'O-states' lost some of their electoral votes....as a result of the 2010 census.

25How about the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact? It would make me very happy indeed if the idiots in the states that passed that POS had to award their electoral votes to a repub.
I'll die of ecstasy if that happens, especially if their stupid decision is the difference that puts a Republican over the top. That Compact is proof positive that liberals are idiots.

That's probably the smartest thing you've ever said. Not necessarily true, but at least arguably true depending on taste. I happen to adore Scotch Ale, but California Ales (Thank you Sierra Nevada for inventing California Ale Yeast and discovering Cascade Hopps) particularly the California IPA rank highly.
You can make a California Ale anywhere. Just buy a bottle of Sierra Nevada, start a yeast culture, buy some Cascade Hopps, maybe some Kent Goldings, a little Crystal 10, some Two Row Pale, and whammo!* California Ale.
*Whammo is actually the complex process of mashing, sparging, fermenting, and bottling/kegging.

In a related, but completely anecdotal, corollary to this, last night my high school freshman son asked me if I thought the president would be reelected. I said no and wondered why he was asking. He said that everyone (at school) used to always talk about how cool Obama was but now half the people don't like him and the other half don't really care. Since my son and CAC are about the same age, I thought I would pass it along.

Just wait until people start calling you "sir." I hate to be called "ma'am" even though people use those terms out of respect.

Yup. A few(?) years ago when I thought I was making time with a cute little ginger, she called me "sir". I knew it was all over then.

About that "mood of the voters" thing....I predict the Bradley effect is back. The majority of voters are keeping quiet and and will quietly go to the polls and vote that stupid idiot out of office.

Afterwards, liberals will say, "How did ________ win? I don't know anyone who voted for him!"

Me too. I miss the days where political opponents could use clever humor to make a point. Everything has gotten so destructive.
And yes, CBD, I do miss the music. Went to some good concerts in the 70s. I am getting old though. Went to my first Jimmy Buffet concert in 1981, still love his music but don't like the concerts as much any more.

I actually travel...often. Sorry I drink beer from every edge of the US and I am not buying the BS. I am always happy to get back home where I don't need to struggle to find an ale on tap. California has over 200 breweries, the only states even close to that are Oregon, Washington,
More breweries than MN, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY combined for you lovers of the New England brew, for you southerners more than the whole southern eastern seaboard.

I'm in Texas! Dallasite here. The kids I'm around mainly call me "Aunt Mayday" which I don't mind.
Last night I came out of a store though, and a man and his daughter (who I first thought was his wife, until he mentioned his wife at home, but I digress) needed a jump. He called me "ma'am." I'm not even that old!

Step outside.
Just let me finish my beer.
Seriously, I think that CA has been passed in quality, but of course not quantity. It's the most populous state in the union; of course it's going to have the most breweries.

Ace mentions the January 1980 Harris poll showing Carter above 60%...
I will never forget a political cartoon I saw sometime in early 1992 showing a race track with a massive hopped-up & ready-to-roll dragster named "Bush" and a tiny little matchbox car of a dragster sitting haplessly in the next lane named "Dems", above a caption that said "1992 Presidential Race."
Anything is possible and everything should be expected this year. Heck Ive thought for over a year that we're probably headed for a Florida Part 2: the Wrath of ACORN if Obama loses, with results challenged and litigated in three or four states on accusations of voting rights discrimination. Dems will not accept a vote result that doesnt end in an Obama win especially if Republicans sweep Congress back.
I sure hope it doesnt happen that way for obvious reasons, but I see the political madness meter going to 11 this year. We're in for an historic series of events this year-domestic and foreign-for good or bad. Buckle up.
Accordingly, Dems are going to freak out defending Obama. The Repubs should employ campaigning techniques using the Dems urgent panicked energy against them.
The more they scream and yell at you at a rally this summer or while youre signature gathering, the more you stand firm & dont take the bait. They want to provoke you to take a swing at them. Dont do it. Defend yourself if assaulted but its the Dems and the lefties who will initiate the violence this year.
Most likely the actual violence I think will come at the GOP convention. Occutots vs Cops. And the media will be only too happy to cover the tales of woe if Sunshine or Tempest get pushed off a Tampa sidewalk by a storm-trooping cop or tea party extremist.
Still. Gotta stay calm. When they try to vote with dead people and cartoon characters, be there to challenge it with a polite resolute smile, but dont ever back down because you have rights same as anyone else.
If every time they come lunging at you-we-us with another media drill like the Sandra of Arc saga, a great mass of informed people should just step aside as the train passes, refute the idiocy in detail, then stand up when the backlash comes. Do this every time and eventually, they will tire out and go away.

I think it's time that someone again pointed out the glory that is the Electoral College. This wonderful system, thought up by the Founders, ensures that whoever "wins" the presidential election cannot be questioned. With the current "winner take all" formulas used by most states, even narrow victories in individual States almost always translate into Electoral College mandates.
Imagine a system with a national popular vote. Every vote in every prestinct in every State could be a "game changer". Candidates would concentrate on "running up the vote" in places where they ran strong. Even in 2000, the election was only contested in a few counties in one State. When it came time to count the Electoral College votes, there was a clear winner, not a standoff.
Absolutely wonderful & fantastic!
