When Did Obama Know About Petraeus' Affair?
— Ace

Did he know about it months ago, which seems likely?

Did he tell Petraeus to resign after the election?

If Petraeus had to resign because he was compromised, he was compromised months ago.

Did Obama leave a compromised head of the CIA in place to avoid some difficult politics?

Petraeus' testimony about this -- not the affair, but Obama's knowledge of it and offers to resign -- is now required.

14 Compromised? If Obama knew Petraeus was having an affair that would be a BONUS because it would give Obama a hold on the CIA director. If that's what happened, Petraeus screwed him by resigning when pressure was applied.

21 Still, the White House, with concurrence by the FBI and Justice Department, held off on asking for Petraeus’ resignation until after the election. His resignation occurred three days after the election, avoiding the possibility that Obama’s ill-fated appointment of Petraeus could become an issue in the election. FBI agents on the case were aware that such a decision had been made to hold off on forcing him out until after the election and were outraged. “The decision was made to delay the resignation apparently to avoid potential embarrassment to the president before the election,” an FBI source says. “To leave him in such a sensitive position where he was vulnerable to potential blackmail for months compromised our security and is inexcusable.” Michael Kortan, the FBI’s assistant director for public affairs, said he had no comment. from the Newsmax article

30 I think Petraeus purposely put in his letter the phrase "when I had been married 37 years, I had an affair" (paraphrasing), because he's now been married 38 yrs. I think that was his way of saying that the affair happened over a year ago, so that people could figure out that this didn't just happen and the FBI and president have known about this for awhile. They waited and used the information as leverage. If it compromised security, they should have fired him immediately.

31 I can't get over the suspicion that if Romney had released the lawyers instead of conceding this thing might have turned out differently. Even if not, FFS, it's becoming clear that there was so much fraud in play that it's almost an injustice not to take action on it at the most opportune time.

59 You know, if some enterprising young journalist dug deep and got to the bottom of all this—Benghazi, the voting errors, the post election moves by the white house—they could really make a name for themselves. Like, Woodward level name for themselves. But of course that implies they believe the current administration has Nixonian skeletons to uncover, AND would mean they would be putting their career ahead of the party line. Which none of them would do. Maybe once the economy tanks and they are kicked out of their bread box new york or dc apartments they will, but I still sincerely doubt it.

Obama doesn't take questions any more... even from the MSM that loves him so.... he is above that.... you see, the media might slip up once in a while and actually ask a tough question- like what was begining to happen to Obamas press secretary.

What a f*cking presser he had today.  A mob of cheering marxists loving them some class warfare.  What kind of "press" conference has a mob of cheering political hacks clapping at attacks on the successful in this country?  Wouldn't be supprised if all Obamas future "press" conferences were held at universities like all his campaign events were held.

I predict many many more of this type of "press" conference.  No questions allowed....followed by a standard statement from Jay Carney- "the President is much too busy right now trying to get to the bottom of Bengahzi... He wants more than anyone, to find out what happened and to punish those responsible".... and yet Obama will still go on Letterman and other entertainment shows to swing away on the softballs that the Hollywood folk send his way...

Unf*cking believable the way the media has rolled over under this marxist.

80 re: "I wonder who is gonna get blamed for Benghazi"

I've heard that Petraeus very insistently held that it was the guy who made that Muslim video that did it. And apparently he bought that propaganda line so deeply, he was spouting it at the same people who invented it.

Maybe he's come to his senses since then and has something to say. We'll never know.

If the not-quite-official story of how his affair became a matter of interest—that he was psycho-stalking a mannish ho who pump-and-dumped him—I think we'll never hear *anything* from him again.

The guy might be (or have become) full-spectrum crazy, and his *believing* the official spin on Benghazi might be what tipped the boys off to how crazy he is. So they hung him out with this ho biz before he could be insane at the congressional hearings and cause a problem.

I'm guessing. If I were making a movie out of the quasi-facts we have now, that's the movie.

102 I don't want to see a lot of bs about evangelicals sitting this out since in the sidebar I see that MORMONS didn't come out for their boy as much as GW BUSH.

Seems maybe they had some doubts about his "faith" along with his ideology too?

Coulter's trying to walk back her capitulation to "electability" and try to fit back into that "Conservative Spunky Gall" suit she's been living on for so long.

Good luck with that Ann. We saw and heard you're chubby chasing fecklessness and watched you cling with righteous indignance to an at best weak fiscal conservative who turned out to be a nice guy but maybe a little too nice and too fearful (again) of attacking a minority. (don't want to treat them as equals or something we might get a bad write up in the NYT and all our friends at the CC will look down their noses at us for being gauche)

Once again Obama gets a pass. Strangely enough he's never accomplished anything positive in his life with all the free passes he still is a loser. A "winning" loser but loser just the same. His claim to fame will always be that he was the first black elected President of the US(and if the economy goes the way it looks like it will, maybe the last).

John Boehner has to go. I just wrote my new republican Rep and told him this was the first order of business. Either that or try to get him in a high stakes poker game.

You have to give Harry "i'm not a toucher" Reid props for having the guts to stake out a hard position and stick to it. I guess some Mormon's can be tough.

In addition to when Barky knew about this, when did the FBI know? Prior to their three hour "investigation" in Benghazi three weeks after the murders of four Americans? You know, when they still left important papers behind, like they left four Americans.

Any bets on who is next to get thrown under bus? Think hard, morons. Hillary is in Outer Mongolia dancing with wolves or Huma. The CIA director is now deemed a bad decision maker due to testosterone. There is a shot at getting the Senate back, which would neuter Obama for his last two years. He'd basically vanish to the golf course.

216 I wonder what predicated the FBI investigation that surfaced the affair, what was the timeline of the investigation and what, if anything, was the final disposition of that investigation. It may have been a valid investigation that produced an embarrassing little nugget that Steadman filed away for a "rainy day" if and when it was needed against Petraeus- J. Edgar Hoover was infamous for stuff like that. J. Edgar Steadman? Or maybe the investigation was suborned for the express purpose of digging dirt on Petraeus, which sounds more like the Steadman we all know and love- in a prison jumpsuit. In any event that Steadman and the JEF were trying to blackmail Petraeus. They just didn't count on the fact that his first instinct would be to charge into the ambush. This should be fun to watch.

Normally I would agree with you but in light of recent events I am not so sure.

We can probably take the stupid Begich seat in AK.  The one that we never should have lost in the first place.  That one looks likely.

I would bet money that Johnson in SD (the guy who had the stroke) is going to retire.  So we have a good shot at that one too.

Landrieu in LA and Pryor in AR and Hagan in NC are up for re-election.  We may be able to take those.

As for the rest?  I don't know.  Warner in VA is up for re-election, but VA has shown itself to be a blue state now.  Don't know if that's possible.  Baucus in MT is up for re-election, but MT just voted to send back their other D senator.  The other states are all pretty solidly blue.  Sure Franken in MN is up for re-election, but who is going to challenge him?  Pawlenty?  Bachmann?

218 Okay, the first part of the NewsMax article some questions people are asking: Ronald Kessler reporting from Washington, D.C. — The resignation of David H. Petraeus as CIA director followed an FBI investigation of many months, raising the question of why he was not forced out until after the election. In his letter of resignation, Petraeus cited an extra-marital affair he had been having. “After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair,” Petraeus said in his letter to President Obama. “Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours.” Petraeus, who had a distinguished military career, revealed no additional details. However, an FBI source says the investigation began when American intelligence mistook an email Petraeus had sent to his girlfriend as a reference to corruption. Petraeus was commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan from July 4, 2010 until July 18, 2011. The investigation began last spring, but the FBI then pored over his emails when he was stationed in Afghanistan.

If you don't care, ask him to point out a single 'right-wing' news story on the broadcast news. And then proceed to tear it to shreds.

300 "considering the last Repub ticket to have a SoCon on it did better than Mr. Fucking electability, I'd say you're as full of shit as anyone else here."

Except _that_ socon didn't make horrible gaffe blunders about rape. Nor did any other socons on downticket races that year.

Whereas this time round, we had two separate gaffe disasters with socons, both of them essentially unforgivably stupid, and both on a hot-button swing-voter issue. "Mr. Fucking Electability" had to try to run while simultaneously trying to brush their stink off his clothes. He didn't need that distraction.

In the first incident, a socon candidate WHO WAS AHEAD IN THE POLLS and who didn't even need to be talking to the media went out to talk to the media anyway. Genius. Where he made one of the dumbest statements ever to come from the mouth of anyone in the party, ever. Displaying a frankly appalling lack of understanding of junior high school biology. And horribly insulting uncounted numbers of rape survivors. This made _instant national news_. It went everywhere in minutes, affected polls within hours, and it continued to do damage right through Election Day.

Then, in the second incident, AFTER IT WAS CLEAR THE FIRST ONE WAS A DISASTER, another socon candidate faced what anyone with half a brain would know by then was an inevitable abortion question. And he hadn't prepared for that, and bungled it just about as badly. Though without the comical failure to grasp basic biology. That second gaffe made the first one even worse, because while you can argue one idiot is an outlier, two idiots are a trend. It's confirmatory.

Yes, I know Mourdock didn't _mean_ to say that rape was God's will. Whereas Akin really did mean it with his magic rape sperm detection nonsense. But Mourdock's unpracticed, boneheaded syntax left that open as one interpretation. And if there's a single key rule in modern media politics, it is that you cannot leave any ambiguity at all in what you say, as it will be ruthlessly seized and exploited. At least if you're a conservative, it will be.

Say what? I suspect that you don't know how things work in the performing arts, particularly. You've got to survive the gauntlet from the get go at the beginning for long time  before you ever get anywhere near a "mogul", or even a label or studio. It's mostly a collaborative industry, even for solo musos and actors, etc. If your views are known, good luck getting anywhere. Being merely talented isn't enough to avoid being a pariah. You have to be SO talented that they can't afford to have you working with the competition. Even then, they'll shitbag you the moment they sense an opportunity. Also, there aren't any "moguls" any more, not in the sense you're thinking of. It's not the 1930's anymore.

346 @Soothsayer: See here's the point, my problem isn't that we might have been in a bubble here (I don't believe that by the way), it's that we can look at the election now and see that the reason we lost was that Republican voters didn't show up. That's what pisses me off the most about all this and that's why I went on my rant that it shouldn't have fucking mattered if Mitt was a die hard Conservative or not. The turn out should have been fucking huge, but for some fucked up reason we have Republicans out there that wanted the perfect candidate this time around. We didn't have that option with the core group that ran, so we choose the guy we thought could win and by all rights should have won. What I'm saying now is let's find that "perfect Conservative" that these fucking retards want and run him/her. Let's see if that person will win. I got a lot of that whenever I tried to point out that things weren't going to be skittles and rainbows either under Romney.

Personally, I hate that THEY WON and that TFG won. And that hate and ignorance won. And as much as I was concerned about exactly how conservatively Romney would govern, I still wanted him to win.
(if i was him I'd be having a very close and personal conversation with whoever built his website, whoever signed off on it and whoever gave the go ahead without a trial run. Just sayin' their true politics might be up for question. na' mean?)

All that said, although the next 4 years will be excruciating for some of us, it wouldn't have been all that much better. Boehner would still be Boner and McConnell would still be ol' pinch face.

Lots of opportunity for mistakes and outcries of pain. Media frothing at the mouth to bring him down. Lies and fables abounding. maybe even a riot or flash mob or two.

With him out of the picture, it now becomes the Democrats game. They've gotten their wish (and we all know the admonition about that don't we) and now they have to perform.

Perhaps it's best that Boehner just roll over completely and pass anything they want. That way they can't revert to their normal blame Republican standing in his way rant.

I think his negotiating only hurts that possibility.  A part of me believes that but a part of me wants Boehner to hold the line and make them cut stuff before they get new taxes. Trouble is, I don't think he will. (he didn't before) Then we'll have a double whammy, no cuts and being blamed for obstruction.

The republican party as a contender in the future elections for the white house and Presidency is finished, kaput, done and dead.
You stupid party folks ran your last election ever and lost.
From this point on republican's will be democrats with r after their title used to make fun of or as the focus of the two minute hate.
You republican's should have run like it meant the future of your party instead of some floggin' T ball game.
Disband the party and call it the second democratic party of the USA

386 #368: I don't know if I'd say they were mad at an imperfect candidate. I think it's more likely that they were just sick of the party establishment picking our candidate in election after election. That candidate is always more of a moderate type, and he's generally willing to burn bridges to win the primary but then tries to make nice with his opponent in the general. And he loses.

Romney was at least willing to criticize Obama, but still not as harshly as he criticized his primary opponents. He still talked about what a nice guy Obama is.

People eventually get sick of supporting a party whose establishment seems to like its opponents more than it does the party base.

I think that's the reason so few Republicans turned out this year. It's been a steady decline since '04.

Remember when Petraeus pissed off Coburn & even McCain during the "closed door briefing" by sticking to the video story? I'm betting Axelshaft was holding the FBI report of the affair over General Ps' head. The Gen. went along before the election because the Congresspussies didn't put him under oath. In the upcoming hearing there were going to be potential perjury charges if he lied under oath, so the Gen. outed himself to his wife and then resigned rather than betray the CIA and walk the plank himself.

It's simple really; to figure these guys out just imagine the sleaziest, most despicable thing you can think of, and then follow the taxpayer dough crumbs to Chez Chicago East (it's the big white house with the guards out front).

As an aside, why the General would associate himself with this sleazeball regime is beyond me ... his reputation is now forever diminished.

And ... someone finds several exchanges of private emails from a secure line that really oughtta notta be there and, um, investigates. That's not POTUS worthy, that's CIA Inspector General worthy. The POTUS angle here comes through the wife, cuz she worked for Elizabeth Warren the last time when Warren was working in the TARP commission and then when Warren was lobbying up Dodd-Frank and doing the nomination confirmation rounds, and now is RUNNING the military contact section of the CFPB. So, someone in the internal investigation says, Boss, this falls into the stuff that chief counsel needs to know, that top brass here needs to know, that the Inspector General MUST get told, and we're here to tell you right now, we've got no choice in this, but you got a little time to do whatever you think is right. Suggesting Obama was sitting on this for years is pure irresponsibility and also a pure violation of Occam's Razor ... look it up. Ace, you've gone beyond being a joke; you're now into self-parody. I guarantee you this: IN YOUR LIFETIME, what remains of it, exactly no Republicans will get elected into the White House so long as you Ace remain the way you've been in this election year since May, the way you've been in the last two days after ONE FRICKIN' DAY of post-election lucidity, and thereby reflecting the conservative, right, Republican world view. 432 Petraeus has been extorted for a couple of years now, since his subordinate McChrystal made light of Biden and got fired by Obama, then Obama demoted Petraeus to fill his former subordinates position (punishment?).

Odd enough that Petraeus sucked Obama and took the demotion even though he could have walked away into full retirement, even odder that Obama later leapfrogged him to Director CIA.

433 This mess explains, at least in part, why Petraeus backed the Administration Benghazi coverup story blaming the embassy attack and the deaths of the ambassador and three others by a 'spontaneous mob' enraged by a 14-minute YouTube video. Petraeus goes along, his mistress isn't prosecuted for attempting to access sensitive emails (and possibly other information). Which begs the question: why in the world would she do such a thing? One doesn't innocently access the files of a CIA Director. Who knows? Maybe the Russians have actually started fielding spies who aren't incredible fuckups. So profoundly disappointed in Petraeus. He forgot the first rule for any keeper of the secrets: keep it clean in your personal life and do not allow yourself to become compromised.

So what if Patreaus did whatever he did. According to the 50+% of Americans who voted for the reelection of the worst President in the US for 200 years - it really does not matter.

All that matters is that they have been now promised 4 more years of freeness. More welfare, more lack of personal responsibility, moer choice to kill unborn children after the choice to have more sex.

They could care less about whether or not a General has sex on his watch - after all isn't that what they are doing themselves?

Quite frankly I could not care less what this clown does - after all he chose to work with Obama - and people like him do exactly what he just did.

All we do know is that there will be more clowns like this coming out of the woodwork, there will be more unemployment and the National Debt will br $20 trillion in 2016 and the Republicans will still hand the Presidency to the Democrats on a platter.

Goodby America !

441 I'm late to the game on this, but what about the possibility that the Zero Machine set him up to remove any possibility of a political future.  Frankly, I've always suspected Petraeus is actually a semi-liberal (i.e. Colin Powell), but I'm guessing the Donks viewed him as a political threat regardless.  Especially since they don't have the time for old-school libs anymore, and much prefer the Saul Alinskyite Hidden Dragon over such archaic Crouching Tigers.

I hate to be so cynical...

442 Obama knew long ago..after all the Director of the CIA has to be vetted and have background checks every step of the way...they take polygraph tests as well and are asked about things such as a marital affair. Please...Obama held this card up his sleeve for a LONG time...he held it until he knew it could be useful to him. In order to stop Petraeus from testifying TRUTHFULLY before Congress, Obama played the card with him...AFTER the election but BEFORE the date of the Congressional investigation. The administration is covering up BIG TIME. Had it come out before the election, the outcome would have been different

443 of course. OBAMA knew. why do you think this came out after the election? let's start impeachment procedings.
