Who Is Thursday's "Mystery Speaker"?
— Ace

Someone is slated for Thursday "TBD," possibly speaking during the network's coverage. (Although that seems impossible, given that Rubio and Romney will speak during that time too, and it's just an hour.)

I wonder if it's Governor Wilder. There was that whole business of him showing up at a Ryan fundraiser for Romney, and then the claim he just accidentally showed up at the wrong hotel. Bryan Preston's sources say that's bunk. But there wasn't much pushback on the "wrong hotel" claim -- maybe they were trying to keep it quiet?

Even if he were a Romney supporter, he wouldn't do it openly.  Maybe I'm wrong, though.  If it's Doug Wilder, the election is over and possibly the whole Democrat party.  I'm not kidding.

Clint Eastwood would be worth the subterfuge, certainly.

It's got to be somebody big enough to justify the speculation.  This is not going to be a Charlie Crist situation.

Posted by: Billy Bob, pseudo-intellectual at August 28, 2012 08:51 AM (3ZjAP)

74 I would spontaneously orgasm if it was Doug Wilder who was the mystery guest.  It would be a MASSIVE 'get' for Romney -- first black Governor elected since Reconstruction, from a key swing state, major appeal to Richmond and NoVA.

But I don't think it will be.  That's just not how Wilder rolls, unless he's decided this late in life to just say "eh, fuck it" and endorse Romney.  He's far more of the wink-and-a-nod type.

Clint Eastwood, suggested above, would actually be a pretty great choice too.  One of the very, very few Hollywood types that would make Americans sit up and take note.

Finally, I really really really hope it's NOT Sarah Palin.  This is not the demographic Romney needs to play for in November.  The voters he needs still hate her with a passion...and I know this infuriates a lot of conservatives around here.  Moreover I don't really see what she brings in terms of 'juice.'  Her skillz as a speaker are...tactfully, I'll say that I think they're overrated.

It HAS to be someone with either big crossover credibility, someone with celebrity juice AND credibility (i.e. Eastwood-like), something like that.  Palin just doesn't fit that mold.

It would actually shake my confidence in the judgment of the Romney campaign.  She's just so toxic to the nation at large (ESPECIALLY women), and doesn't even do much more to juice up base enthusiasm than Paul Ryan already has.

Actually, since I really do think Team Romney is not stupid, the real result would be to make me depressed, because the unspoken takeway would be that the poll numbers are looking grim underneath the hood and that a Hail Mary 'motivate the base' move is needed.  If that's the case we're probably not going to win.

No, a GOP convention mystery speaker, if it's a celebrity has to be more than even an A-lister (Sinise is B-list, I think).  Sinise, Voigt, Adam Baldwin are all cool guys, but not prime-time convention mystery speaker material.

It has to be a legend if it's a celebrity and somebody not easily identified as a Republican.  Eastwood has been tied to Republicans and has been one, but he's done the whole Libertarian dance and the Super Bowl commercial.

Posted by: AmishDude at August 28, 2012 09:01 AM (T0NGe)

174 Douglas Wilder was my first thought as well and for the same reason plus he has been very critical of Joe Biden recently. He wouldn't be able to give a very long speech, because the RNC wouldn't want to worry about Romney's speech going past 11EST, which is when the networks will cut away, but it would be very symbolic. Popular African-American Democratic Governor of Virginia would be a coup.

176 106Let's remember some things: this "open mystery slot" is pretty much one of the most HIGH EXPOSURE TIME SLOTS in the entire convention. It's at 10:00PM, with full network coverage, and it comes right before the Rubio/Romney finale. You have to ask yourself: who are Team Romney (noted non-idiots well aware of what demos they need to play with to win in the fall) going to want to shine a bright light on to set the tone for the night, the convention, and the campaign going forward?

It HAS to be someone with either big crossover credibility, someone with celebrity juice AND credibility (i.e. Eastwood-like), something like that. Palin just doesn't fit that mold.

This is just so wrong in so many ways I don't even know how to respond to it.  Anyway, it's attitudes like this that get us buried in elections.  Trust me, the sorts of people who have gut-level revulsion-reactions to politicians DO exist and they DO vote and they CAN get pushed by things as seemingly unimportant to you as this.  Remember Pat Buchanan in 1992?

Rudy Giuliani wouldn't be quite as exciting as the other options named so far, but would be a decent enough fit.  I have trouble seeing it, though, given the notorious bad blood between Romney and Rudy.  Not impossible, however.

I remember Cary Grant introduced Nancy Reagan in 1980 so it's not unprecedented and would generate a ton of buzz. Would still rather have Cheney but Mitts too cautious.

Honestly, how many people,  moderates,  low-information,  independents,  whatever you want to call them...how many  of them would be  SHOCKED!!! and SCANDALIZED!!! by the knowledge that Sarah Palin was a speaker at the convention?  Most people, love her or hate her, are already pretty aware of her political  alignment.

Yes, having her speak lends credence to the notion that she is still relevant  to the party as a whole.  And, to that, again I'd say, "durr!"   She is.

Will she win voters?  Probably not.  Will she lose voters?  Probably not.

I'm not saying I'd want it to be her.  But let's not accept the Liberal Premise that Sarah Palin is a biohazard.

Absolutely not.  There's no place for any non-American to speak at a political convention.  Not even at a political rally of any sort.  Our elections are strictly American affairs.  Barky should have been arrested and tossed out fo the 2008 race for that criminality of his campaigning in foreign nations, for foreigners.  National sovereignty means something and it needs to be defended - more than anything else.  Without the clear concept of sovereignty there is no "nation".

Agree for the most part, I feel the same way about Ron Paul.  I was actually a HUGE Palin fan at first, but her stock cratered when she left in the middle of her first term as Governor and decided to be a celebrity.

But I really have had enough anecdotal data to know Palin speaking at the Convention would be like the Democrats having Al Sharpton be a featured speaker.

I can't tell you how many REPUBLICAN women I know that loathe her.  We can psycho-analyze that all we want, and scream it's unfair all we want, but it is what it is.

I'm more interested in winning elections than I am trying to will the world to see things the way I do.  Palinistas SHOULD be Palin fans because they want to defeat the Left and see conservatives succeed, not because of a cult of personality.

Half the voters in Virginia probably only remember his administration dimly if at all, and the national TV audience could care less.

333 >>>"TAMPA -- The last person many would expect to see at the Republican National Convention is the chairman of the Democrats' rival effort next week. But there was Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Sunday night, mixing and mingling with reporters and GOP strategists at a late-night dinner here.

Villaraigosa is one of the keynote speakers at Obama's convention in Charlotte.  And he's an ultra-liberal d-bag anyway.  So you can safely rule that one out.

A large crate is rolled out onto stage.  At the same time, ushers are passing out small unmarked  boxes to all of the delegates and convention attendees.

Mitt Romney comes out  on stage with a crowbar.  "On the count of three, we are all going to open our boxes at the same time!  Ready?  One, Two, Three!"

Each of  the small boxes that the attendees received contains a water balloon.

The crate  Mitt opened on-stage contains a dazed, stumbling  Alan Grayson,  in his  jammies,  wrists bound in duct-tape, blindfolded, the blow-dart still sticking out of his neck.

Robert Downey Jr...yeah, probably not. That would be awesome though. I don't buy that he went back to the dark side just because he went to an Obama fundraiser (the guy has a picture of him and his wife with W and Laura on his fridge). $40,000 is a drop in the bucket for RDJ and Obama's campaign. I think either he wanted to meet the President (as sucky as he is, he's still the President), or keep up appearances. If it's the latter, he's probably not coming to the RNC this year. He did attend the RNC in 2008: http://preview.tinyurl.com/8eq5fs

Taking the temperature of the convention on the ground, throwing a little flak into the media's airspace, nothing else.  Same stuff Joe Biden was supposed to be doing.

A video montage of the "best of" Barack Obama with all of his broken and bullshit promises, showing how the economy has fared over his term, ending with "“if I donÂ’t have this done in three years, then thereÂ’s going to be a one-term proposition.”

Then out comes Mitt Romney.

Rush has spent about 2 hours now talking about how the RNC is kicking conservatives to the curb.  I do not think it will be Rush, even though he is 3 hours away.

Why on Earth would it be Palin, (or someone else like Herman Cain for that matter)?  This part of the convention is going to be on all the networks, I would think you would want to use that spot to reach out to a lot of people who don't aggressively follow politics and are looking to be persuaded.  These people are not going to flip it on and be like "Wow, Sarah Palin is speaking at the Republican National Convention?!?!  Didn't see that one coming..."  It might surprise folks like us because we follow this stuff closely, but the vast majority of people are not going to see that as a surprise of any kind, it would be sort of expected to them.

353 Finally, I really really really hope it's NOT Sarah Palin.

356 I believe it's Wilder, and I believe the speech is going to awesome, and I believe the MSM is ready at a moments notice to try to marginalize him. He may be labeled senile, which will be rich considering it was that old crazy man Joe Biden that had him speak up in the first place.

360 Rush. And I hope it is. He can eloquently explain why the Conservative Platform is BEST for America at this crossroad. Those who love him will tune in. Those who hate will rebroadcast and mock him. Those who are fence-sitting this election will actually hear what the MSM does it's level-best to tamp down on a daily basis. Or Bill Whittle. Get him! or Dinesh. Either of these men. And if I hear the Prezzy say 'tah' for the word 'to' or 'the folks' one more time, my ears are going to bleed.

363 Wilder would be the biggest game changer, especially since Virginia looks tight.  If Romney can sew up VA, Obama is a guaranteed one-term failure.  But I wouldn't get my hopes up on Wilder, it seems very pie in the sky.

Clint Eastwood would probably be my 2nd choice, and I see that as a much more realistic bet.  The man is an icon, and has been cool with every generation.  It would also break through to a lot of voters that don't pay attention during Conventions.

365 @364 sweet. I was wondering if anyone was going to pounce. I figured I was too new here to do so. @372 that would be awesome! In truth, my real guess is that this spot is held for Nancy, but since they are not sure that she will be able they noted it as TBD so that if she cannot go, it does not make her look bad. I honestly don't think the RNC planned to get everyone excited about a mystery guest, it just turned out that way.
