— Ace Someone is slated for Thursday "TBD," possibly speaking during the network's coverage. (Although that seems impossible, given that Rubio and Romney will speak during that time too, and it's just an hour.)
I wonder if it's Governor Wilder. There was that whole business of him showing up at a Ryan fundraiser for Romney, and then the claim he just accidentally showed up at the wrong hotel. Bryan Preston's sources say that's bunk. But there wasn't much pushback on the "wrong hotel" claim -- maybe they were trying to keep it quiet?

Even if he were a Romney supporter, he wouldn't do it openly. Maybe I'm wrong, though. If it's Doug Wilder, the election is over and possibly the whole Democrat party. I'm not kidding.
Clint Eastwood would be worth the subterfuge, certainly.
It's got to be somebody big enough to justify the speculation. This is not going to be a Charlie Crist situation.

Posted by: Billy Bob, pseudo-intellectual at August 28, 2012 08:51 AM (3ZjAP)
But I don't think it will be. That's just not how Wilder rolls, unless he's decided this late in life to just say "eh, fuck it" and endorse Romney. He's far more of the wink-and-a-nod type.
Clint Eastwood, suggested above, would actually be a pretty great choice too. One of the very, very few Hollywood types that would make Americans sit up and take note.
Finally, I really really really hope it's NOT Sarah Palin. This is not the demographic Romney needs to play for in November. The voters he needs still hate her with a passion...and I know this infuriates a lot of conservatives around here. Moreover I don't really see what she brings in terms of 'juice.' Her skillz as a speaker are...tactfully, I'll say that I think they're overrated.

It would actually shake my confidence in the judgment of the Romney campaign. She's just so toxic to the nation at large (ESPECIALLY women), and doesn't even do much more to juice up base enthusiasm than Paul Ryan already has.
Actually, since I really do think Team Romney is not stupid, the real result would be to make me depressed, because the unspoken takeway would be that the poll numbers are looking grim underneath the hood and that a Hail Mary 'motivate the base' move is needed. If that's the case we're probably not going to win.

No, a GOP convention mystery speaker, if it's a celebrity has to be more than even an A-lister (Sinise is B-list, I think). Sinise, Voigt, Adam Baldwin are all cool guys, but not prime-time convention mystery speaker material.
It has to be a legend if it's a celebrity and somebody not easily identified as a Republican. Eastwood has been tied to Republicans and has been one, but he's done the whole Libertarian dance and the Super Bowl commercial.

This is just so wrong in so many ways I don't even know how to respond to it. Anyway, it's attitudes like this that get us buried in elections. Trust me, the sorts of people who have gut-level revulsion-reactions to politicians DO exist and they DO vote and they CAN get pushed by things as seemingly unimportant to you as this. Remember Pat Buchanan in 1992?
Rudy Giuliani wouldn't be quite as exciting as the other options named so far, but would be a decent enough fit. I have trouble seeing it, though, given the notorious bad blood between Romney and Rudy. Not impossible, however.

You understand that this isn't the demo that Wilder appeals to, right? In VA he speaks to centrists, moderate Democrats, and (most critically) the increasingly squishy Northern Virginia exurbs that have fled from their traditional GOP roots.
Nationally speaking, it's hard to get much better messaging than "first elected black governor since Reconstruction -- from a swing-state no less -- tells America that it's okay to vote for Romney because Obama's an incompetent, divisive turd."

I don't know, guys...
Honestly, how many people, moderates, low-information, independents, whatever you want to call them...how many of them would be SHOCKED!!! and SCANDALIZED!!! by the knowledge that Sarah Palin was a speaker at the convention? Most people, love her or hate her, are already pretty aware of her political alignment.
Yes, having her speak lends credence to the notion that she is still relevant to the party as a whole. And, to that, again I'd say, "durr!" She is.
Will she win voters? Probably not. Will she lose voters? Probably not.
I'm not saying I'd want it to be her. But let's not accept the Liberal Premise that Sarah Palin is a biohazard.
All that said, if he hasn't already been scheduled directly, I would love to see Alan West come out as the mystery speaker. And not pull any punches.

Palin would be great for countering some of the blowback Huckabee is causing in the pro-life social conservatives. But I do not think that is a problem, so I douby her.

Mike Bloomberg? Now that's hilarious. The pure operator in me kind of thinks it might be helpful in some ways, but the conservative in me simply spits the bit. I wouldn't mind his endorsement. But I think my essential conservative immune system would vomit out the idea of that little authoritarian speaking at a GOP convention.

Absolutely not. There's no place for any non-American to speak at a political convention. Not even at a political rally of any sort. Our elections are strictly American affairs. Barky should have been arrested and tossed out fo the 2008 race for that criminality of his campaigning in foreign nations, for foreigners. National sovereignty means something and it needs to be defended - more than anything else. Without the clear concept of sovereignty there is no "nation".

Agree for the most part, I feel the same way about Ron Paul. I was actually a HUGE Palin fan at first, but her stock cratered when she left in the middle of her first term as Governor and decided to be a celebrity.
But I really have had enough anecdotal data to know Palin speaking at the Convention would be like the Democrats having Al Sharpton be a featured speaker.
I can't tell you how many REPUBLICAN women I know that loathe her. We can psycho-analyze that all we want, and scream it's unfair all we want, but it is what it is.
I'm more interested in winning elections than I am trying to will the world to see things the way I do. Palinistas SHOULD be Palin fans because they want to defeat the Left and see conservatives succeed, not because of a cult of personality.

A large crate is rolled out onto stage. At the same time, ushers are passing out small unmarked boxes to all of the delegates and convention attendees.
Mitt Romney comes out on stage with a crowbar. "On the count of three, we are all going to open our boxes at the same time! Ready? One, Two, Three!"
Each of the small boxes that the attendees received contains a water balloon.
The crate Mitt opened on-stage contains a dazed, stumbling Alan Grayson, in his jammies, wrists bound in duct-tape, blindfolded, the blow-dart still sticking out of his neck.

Robert Downey Jr...yeah, probably not. That would be awesome though. I don't buy that he went back to the dark side just because he went to an Obama fundraiser (the guy has a picture of him and his wife with W and Laura on his fridge). $40,000 is a drop in the bucket for RDJ and Obama's campaign. I think either he wanted to meet the President (as sucky as he is, he's still the President), or keep up appearances. If it's the latter, he's probably not coming to the RNC this year. He did attend the RNC in 2008: http://preview.tinyurl.com/8eq5fs

A video montage of the "best of" Barack Obama with all of his broken and bullshit promises, showing how the economy has fared over his term, ending with "“if I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.”

Why on Earth would it be Palin, (or someone else like Herman Cain for that matter)? This part of the convention is going to be on all the networks, I would think you would want to use that spot to reach out to a lot of people who don't aggressively follow politics and are looking to be persuaded. These people are not going to flip it on and be like "Wow, Sarah Palin is speaking at the Republican National Convention?!?! Didn't see that one coming..." It might surprise folks like us because we follow this stuff closely, but the vast majority of people are not going to see that as a surprise of any kind, it would be sort of expected to them.
