— JohnE. I mean this seriously. He has played over a hundred rounds of golf since his swearing in. That's a lot of golf. Yet, he doesn't appear to be a fan of golf at all. This is odd for someone that plays as often as he does.
Bill Clinton was famous for his love of watching and attending PGA events. Buzz Patterson's book Dereliction of Duty describes some of this, ahem, passion.
I approached President Clinton on three occasions at this golf tournament, Roger, to ask him for the go-ahead to launch this attack. We had Air Force fighters in the air, ready to drop bombs and to repel Saddam’s forces, and on three occasions, President Clinton could not be bothered to take the phone call from Sandy Berger. So, on three occasions I approached the President, he brushed me off—he wanted to watch the golf tournament. So I saw, really, for the first time, the dereliction of duty, as it were, by President Clinton not being able—not being willing to take the phone call while thousands and thousands of Kurds were being slaughtered by Saddam Hussein. Both Bushes were big golf fans as well. As I watch the Ryder Cup this weekend, I am reminded of this story:
Entering the final day, the Americans were four points down, a huge margin to make up. But they had been given a pep talk by the then Governor of Texas, George W Bush, who had read out the “no surrender” address from the Battle of the Alamo. It was so belligerent that David Duval stormed out of the locker room shouting, “Let’s go out and kill them.” The Americans duly staged an almighty comeback and it all came down to the 17th green. The US player Justin Leonard nailed a monster 45ft putt, which prompted his team-mates, their wives and caddies to rush on to the green and high-five each other, dressed in their ludicrous maroon uniforms that made them look like they worked at a cut-price pizza joint. They had forgotten that José Maria Olazábal, the Spaniard, had yet to finish his game. Olazábal, looking flustered, missed his putt and America won the Ryder Cup.Talk to any of your friends or family that golf frequently, and I can assure you they are watching or paying attention to the Ryder Cup.
This is hardly some game-changing issue. It's just... very odd.

Nope. No idea why.

I'd like to be able to afford a round occasionally, but it's the scorekeeping that's a real bitch for me. It's a rather complicated mathmatical formula that involves the total number of balls lost, pi, the number of beers ingested and the phase of the moon.

here in az you can golf for 10 bucks in the summer on some decent courses of course you might get heat stroke by the 5 hole and have to call your mother
When I lived in Bradenton, a bunch of guys from the engineering office found a place to play where we could walk nine for $5 afer 4pm in the summer. The course was right behind the Pirates southern spring encampment, but they were gone by the time those rates went into effect.
We got off work at 4:30, then it was a mad scramble to get beer and drive across town (about 15 minutes) for our game. Good, good times.

I bought a cheapo set of clubs from Play It Again Sports, a cheap bag and got taught by my aforementioned buds. Any day I managed to get a triple bogey on any hole was a great one.
When I upgraded to a new Tour Collection set of clubs (which I still have) they knocked about four strokes off nine holes and felt so much better than the first set. I've never had a real lesson, but it is fun to just screw around with the driver, the big net and wiffle balls in the back yard. And I still have an excuse to drink beer outside, like I need one...

Lol. I didn't vomit, which was a good thing because I was playing with my boss in the company annual outing, but the first and last time I went golfing was in Iowa in August in the middle of the day, and I was sick for three days afterwards (we got third place). And this was before I moved to WI and started drinking beer.

My guess is, he's not all that passionate about the game and he's not very good at it for as much as he plays. He doesn't have the time to devote to lessons and then practicing what he's just been taught, so when he plays, it's a good way to get outside, talk to whoever he's chosen to play with, and get some exercise. From the pictures and very few brief video clips of his swing, he's got a lot of moving parts flying elbows, very weak grip, and what looks like a very serious hack swing, so he probably just wants to keep his game on the private side but still likes to let people know he gets out to play because it's viewed as being a somewhat presidential pastime.

You can probably download a set of rules free or this one that I used to have which has the rules plus a lot of humorous stories about each rule from Tom Watson. My favorite one was about a ladies tournament when one player wound up in a trap next to a rattle snake that would not move. Normally you do not get to alter anything or touch anything in a trap. By the standard rules she would have had to play through the rattlesnake.

Billybob in SC, I took my pool down Thursday and Friday. I got tired of spending $$$ on algecide and chems and the hours to clean out the leaf litter that was making it a daily hour long chore. That and the stinking cover just trapped more crap that got into the pool anyway. Plus it gives me an opportunity to revisit the 'level' bottom and pump location as well as the landscaping around it.

LOL, I used my cover two years before I just stuck in the shed and never touched it again. It was more trouble than it was worth. As for the pool itself I got rid of it several years ago after two years in a row spending all the time, money, and effort to get it up in the Spring and shut it down in the fall and not using it at all.
The pump motor froze up and rather than spend another wad of money fixing it I just called in contractors to demolish it and bury it.
The grass has completely grown over it now.

@Rex the Wonderdog
Golf Digest put his handicap at 17, but a NY Times article said other people described that as "generous". Other accounts give a range of 18-24, whatever that means, but it most likely means to me probably higher than 24. I saw a video of him missing a ball badly at a practice range and most of his shots on the clip went way off to the right. So I think you're right, he doesn't play all that much in or take the time to practice enough in order to get good at it, he just goes out to play to do something different from shooting hoops (which is another game he was never very good at).

Keith Koffler at WhiteHouseDossier.com has been keeping pretty close track: Aug 4th - 104 rounds.
Remember, fundraising is a priority.

Sure he did, don't you remember that? Then the clueless fuck was bragging on the Tonight Show about getting his average up to 125 after practicing on the White House alley.

No, it's not odd at all. Why would the Solipsist-in-Chief want to watch *someone else* play golf? Especially someone who just possibly might be better at it than He is?
No: at all times and in every thing, all that matters to The One is Himself. If He is not doing it - and in particular, if He's not being admired for doing it - then it is of no concern to Him.

In general- "white collar" people who play a lot golf also watch a lot of golf, while "blue collar" people and rural folks who play a lot of golf do not typically watch much golf.
Yes, Clinton comes from a blue collar rural background, but Governor is certainly a white collar job.

Not entirely clear what is happening. From the NYT farticle:
"The Obama administration notified Congress on Friday that it would provide EgyptÂ’s new government an emergency cash infusion of $450 million, but the aid immediately encountered resistance from a prominent lawmaker wary of foreign aid and EgyptÂ’s new course under the leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood.
...
An influential Republican lawmaker, Representative Kay Granger of Texas, immediately announced that she would use her position as chairwoman of the House appropriations subcommittee overseeing foreign aid to block the distribution of the money. She said the American relationship with Egypt “has never been under more scrutiny” than it is in the wake of the election of President Mohamed Morsi, a former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood."
So, stalled in committee until Sen. McPain gives a 'my friends' speech and rolls the House members?
BTW, hated Throw Momma From the train. Just an awful piece of 80's drivel.

Obama doesn't much like people or work. Doesn't he have a reputation for coldness and avoiding socializing? Walking around the golf course gets him away from both.

In a search for the meaning of the word, "shart," a wiki answer turned up three interesting subjects under the question
1) Official Obama website
2) 5 Signs of Bi-Polar
3) Why men fall in love
Is this code, Morons?

Obama doesnt know or care about the Ryder Cup because a) its a team-effort format and b) its media/public attention not directed at or about him.
Not that hard to figure out.

Obozo's not there to play the game (seriously), he's there to be the star.
You don't hear that much about his partners, his score, or even the people (who might play with him) praise his skill, nor do I think he purposefully seeks out superior opponents (say what you will about Boehner... word is it that he kicked Obozo's ass when they played one game together... they've NEVER had a rematch).
Consider how you would play a game of golf with that legendary golfer, Kim Jong Il... you'd praise EVERY stroke and putt, and you wouldn't beat him either... or else... he WAS the star when he hit the links; everybody else there, was there to make him look good.
The other reason for being on the golf course... that's where the 'big boys' are, and private deals are made.
And, it gets him away from Chewbacca.

I think he plays golf, as a big 'Fuck You' to...us...all of us.
Even to the suckers who voted for him.
Remember the times he did that 'middle finger scratch' to the side of his face?
That right there, speaks volumes...about what a petty, spiteful asshole he is.
It costs us money, every time a president leaves the White House.
So there's that, too.
He loves being the 'most expensive president ever'.
I'm sure it feeds his ego, to see the whole golf course shut down, while he is playing.
That's another part of the....'Fuck You'.
And as others have mentioned...a golf course is a good place to have private meetings.
No official White House logs.
The media are kept back, behind the perimeter that the secret service sets up.
It's perfect.
I don't think he cares about golf, the game itself, at all.

Mainly because Obama sucks at golf. I grew up as a kid in Dallas playing 36 holes a day when I could and caddying at Tennison public for Trevino and his crew. A threesome that was ask to let Obama play with them would stay a threesome when they saw Barry's swing. Not even taking in account him being a lefty. His swing sucks. And as far as him being a good basketball player , I'm 61 and I'll play him one on one anyplace anytime for any amount. Maybe he can get sotomayer to ref. I'll still take him.
