There are few things as American as the sheer and utter knowledge that the Cubs will lose. Apple pie, flags, hot cheerleaders, the Cubs sucking. These are the things which make our country great.

In fact, the article doesn't even mention any women serving on the Illinois. The only women it mentions are 24 who are the first accepted into the submariner program.

Let's just say that in a game of pitch and catch with his friends, Walter is always the guy "catching".
I doubt that 5 guys out of the 1,000 in my infantry training battalion (Ft. Polk, summer 1969) were motivated (according to Walter's fevered little imagination) by a desire to go out and "Kill A Commie For Christ". A lot of us had been drafted, another bunch had volunteered. But we were all in the shit.
Ft. Polk was rolling 1,000 men each week through AIT for light weapons infantrymen just then. Since the AIT course took 8 weeks, they had 8 battalions--started a new one each week. They also had basic training down at the South Fort and trained some other MOS's as well--but I was up on the North Fort being trained to be a recoilless rifleman (a truly useless skill in civilian life).
There were maybe 20 National Guardsmen in the battalion--going home to mama once the training period was up--so that left 980. Of those 980 guys 1 soldier got orders to Germany. 975 got orders to go to Viet Nam after two week's leave. 4 got orders to go to Ft. Lewis, where it was understood, they'd soon get orders to Nam.
That's the way it was in August 1969--these guys had a job to do; a lot of them didn't like it--the popular latrine graffito at Ft. Polk was, "We are the unwilling, led by the incompetent, to do the unnecessary, for the ungrateful." But American soldiers always exercise their right to bitch, and most of them then go pick up their rifles and go do their job. And some don't come home.
And Walter--you and your friends can go kiss my backside.

Quentin Aanenson, the fighter pilot featured in a lot of that series, passed away a few years ago. I always liked him. He was very softspoken, looked like he wouldn't hurt a fly, but did some really brutal but necessary and dangerous things. Looks really are deceiving.
90% of the WWII generation is now gone. This morning, I was thinking about how that war is to today's kids as the Spanish-American war was to me. IOW, ancient history. Time marches on.

Remembering some friends:
From the LA Times, August 17, 1991: "Four Navy airmen from San Diego are missing and presumed dead after their helicopter crashed on August 14, 1991 while resupplying ships in the Pacific Ocean near Wake Island, the Navy announced Friday.
The crewmen of the ill-fated CH-46 Sea Knight were identified as Lt. Eric W. Allison, 26, of Coronado; Lt. (j.g.) Kenneth D. Pickens, 24, of Clairemont; Airman William A. Jackson, 20, of San Diego, and Petty Officer 1st Class Johnny L. Caulder Jr., 28, of Spring Valley."
My recollections: Lt. Allison had deployed on three consecutive 6-month cruises because of Desert Shield/Storm, and fortunately his wife he married just before this third, and last cruise, on my ship the USS Camden (AOE-2), had been able to meet him on Guam for a surprise weekend while we were all on liberty there several days before the crash.
Lt (jg) Pickens was on his first deployment, having recently received his wings, and was called "Slim" by most of the other officers, for obvious reasons.
Airman Jackson was relatively new to the ship, as I recall, though I may be mistaken.
PO1 Caulder had just returned to the Camden at Guam from stateside on Emergency Leave, which was necessary because of the discovery of a brain tumor in one of his children. It was a bit of a surprise that command sent him back to the ship with only ten days remaining on our deployment, given the gravity of the situation at home.
Cause of the crash was believed to be a rotor blade on the forward rotor assembly detaching in flight, which had been a problem with this type of helicopter on occasions. Once that occurred, nothing could be done. The CH-46 Sea Knight they were flying was variously nicknamed "Side-Flare 62" and "Tranny-Fire 62", and along with another similar helicopter, Side-Flare 63, had been a work-horse for the Nimitz Battle Group on this cruise. Very little was recovered after the crash, with the exception of one battered flight helmet and several torn aircraft parts.
Eric, Ken, William, and Johnny, your sacrifices for us and the contributions you made to your country during your short lives has not, and will never be forgotten.
Rest in Peace in the Kingdom of Neptunus Rex, Gentlemen, and may you always have Fair Winds and Following Seas . . .

I attended a ceremony today in San Diego. John McCain and Mitt Romney were there! So was the conservative City Councilman who's running for mayor. A little bit of campaigning happened, but people in the audience wanted it. Romney named all these foreign policy challenges that will require a strong American military. Have to say though, best speech of the day was by Nick Popaditch, USMC, Iraqi war veteran, who I later found out is running for Congress (CA-53) against Democrat incumbent idiot Susan Davis. I'm going to send the guy some Paypal love.
It's always good to assemble with fellow patriots who consider it worth a few hours of their time to come stand for our fallen heroes.

Had we invaded Japan instead of dropping the atom bomb, I never would have met my grandfather and Aunt (she was born in 46). Because of that my grandparents are celebrating there 73rd wedding anniversary in June, assuming they are still alive. My grandfather had a draft number but it never got called. The war ended. He worked tons of hours in the steel mills due too the shortage of manpower. When your 93 & 96 years old, life can be over at any second. They are both amazing. I only mention this because I see the 90% of there generation is gone. That is very true. They live in a senior community and call there neighbors "kids". Those "kids" are in there 70's & 80's.

Just a bit of relevant trivia.
At the outbreak of the Korean War, the USMC had been reduced to two half battalions on each coast of the US, plus stripped down ship detachment units and depot guard detachments.
The "Fire Brigade" that was sent to Korea was made up of those battalions combined together along with all that could be scraped loose from the various detachments, as well as any non felony brig bound Marines.
The rest of the division was made up of Marines that came back to the colors on their own transportation dime and "Summer Reserves".
The USMC wasn't allowed a regular reserve. So, they created a Summer Reserve. This was made up of young men who wanted to join the Corps and were waiting for an open slot. They received no pay and no training other than some units of the Summer Reserve would be allowed to tour armory depots and get some exposure to artillery and how it works.
The only organized training those men got when the summons went out to them was a day or two on the rifle range. The remainder of their training was whatever lectures or demonstrations could be provided while aboard ship in rout to Korea.
The percentage of Summer Reserve Marines in the regiments varied between 12%-25%.
It wasn't much better in the USMC air wing either.
Two good books to read that cover this period, the perfidy of the POTUS admins involved and the effects of same are:
First to Fight. An Insiders' View of the US Marines by Victor H. Krulak (Gen, USMC ret)
and
Last Stand of Fox Company by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin.
Last Stand is the true story of Fox Co. 2/7 stand at Toktong Pass which held open the MSR for the forward forces at the Chosin Resevior.
Fox Co held that pass open for 6 days while under assault from a regiment plus of PDRChina forces.
The book is a narrative built around and including first hand input from the surviving Marines and goes into some detail on the Summer Reserve Marines in that outfit.
Of course, the Marines being the Marines... after the war, those Summer Reservists still had to go through Boot Camp if they wanted to stay in the Corps.
