Will Condoleeza Be a Pleeza?
— Ace

I don't have much of an opinion, except that I'm marginally inclined against her, so I'll just link some blathering about it.

By the way, I think this is manufactured news -- when there's no news, you make some up. But whatevs.

Ramesh Ponuru calls the hypothetical choice "nuts." The balls on that guy.

Peggy Noonan is a big fan, if you care.

You know what's shocking? Noonan says Rice is 57 years old. Fifty seven? She looks 40.

No link for Politico, but Sarah Palin says Rice would be a "wonderful" Vice President and notes Rice has far more experience than the current President. She gives Rice a qualified pass on her "mild" support of abortion, stating that Rice wouldn't have responsibility over that issue anyway. (Unless, of course, she became President, which is something to consider.)

Bill Kristol is ambivalent, but digs her high 66-24 favorable ratings.

Rice wowed the crowd—and seemed to impress Mitt Romney, who was standing beside her—when she spoke in a featured role at a Romney campaign event two weeks ago in Park City, Utah. Rice is qualified, would be a poised (if novice) candidate, and would complement Romney in terms of area of expertise, gender (obviously!), and life experience. Rice offers an unusual combination of being at once a reassuring pick (she served at the highest levels of the federal government for eight years) and an exciting one.

I'd really like to hear this speech where she supposedly "wowed" the crowd. Buzzfeed has a very poor audio copy, which I can't listen to because it's so bad. (Surreptitious recording, I imagine.) I kind of like Rice, but while her bio is kind of wow-worthy, she's never wowed me with a statement or speech.

I think that's why I'm against her. While she seemed like a rock star, and I rooted for her like she was a rock star, and even sometimes dresses like a rock star, she actually never had a hit album, and ten years later we'll all still sort of waiting for her to demonstrate her rock star status.

Disagree.  She should NEVER be allowed that post again under any circumstances, because she did nothing to purge the libtards.  They ignored her and did what they felt like.

She'd be a tolerable VP, but not optimal.  The VP slot, lest we've all forgotten, is supposed to be the next Pres nominee.  We will never make her the nominee for Prez.  Can't happen.  If it does happen we lose, because America will not vote for a woman for Prez.

I like the angle - shove the "black female" thing down the libtards throats and let them gag on it.  But it can't work out in the long run.  It's sacrificing tomorrow for today.  PLUS - the media will just Palin-ize her.

Which brings up another point.  All women hate other women who are more attractive and/or successful than them.  Women only like other women who they can pity, are in a relatively harmless position, or are particularly useful to pissing off men.  Condi would drive away more women than she brought in, much like Palin did by simply being hotter/better than most frumpy American hausfraus.

86 Wow.  No one here seems to remember how awful Rice was.  She was behind Bush's disastrous move leftwards in his second term.  She was a failure as SecState.  She was a pali supporter who compared their "plight" to that of blacks during Jim Crow.  She made that laughable Road-Kill Map - which Israel only accepted with 14 reservations and the palis totally rejected and violated from the first day - which she pulled out every single time she said anything (usually stupid) about the mid-east.  She pushed Israel to allow Hamas in the Gaza elections.  She screwed up with Russia - allegedly her forte.  She practically endorsed Barky while she was SecState and almost surely voted for the America-hating Retard.

Rice is an idiot.  She was a total failure.  She would be horrible for Mitt to pick, or even to muse about picking.  Rice is a lefty who would be more at home running on the dem ticket.  I am amazed that people forget all of these things (and more).  She was an absolute disaster as SecState and is not conservative in any way, shape, or form.

Nothing wrong with Don Rumsfeld.

Just the pussies who couldn't take the heat from the Left.

Don Rumsfeld is like Bill Parcells. He's a great guy to turn around a moribund organization that is mired in old thinking and bureaucratic red tape.

But he's so aggressive that his act gets old after a while. Once you've got your own guys in place, it's hard to shake things up.

Parcells knew this and so did Rumsfeld. Bush should have accepted his resignation early on.

117 She sucked as Secretary of State. Some of this could be following orders  but I doubt it. She was against the surge which was Cheney and Bush's idea.  But she could provide no alternative other than a "diplomatic surge." She pushed for the Israelis to leave Gaza and forcibly destroy the Jewish community of Gush Katif. What did the Israelis get for their trouble? A Hamas-controlled government which has fired 10,000s of rockets into Israel' southern cities- dozens dead, hundreds wounded, millions of dollars of property damage. I do not want her anywhere near Israel when she has compared Jews building homes in their ancestral homeland to apartheid in South Africa.

She's "mildly" pro abortion. That's like being mildly pro-slavery. The Republican party must stand for life especially when polling increasingly shows we are winning on the issue. The media will find every policy difference with Romney and pound those non-stop to push the narrative of a Republican Party in civil war.

Do you trust her to break ties in the Senate? It is like electing a Senator and she would be bounced out of a Republican primary in most states. She doesn't have to vote the way Mitt tells her in the event of a tie breaker. Do you trust her to let's say vote for another Thomas, Alito or Scalia if she knows it will be the end of Roe v Wade. I don't.

As for the Palin stamp of approval: stating that Condi is more qualified than Obama is just stating the obvious. Virtually every office holder is more qualified than Obama. So what?

Oh, wait....

How clueless is Powell?  He could have been the First Black President in 1996.  Yes, he would have won the primaries. Nobody cared what he believed in. Even Rush (the only real skeptical one with a loud voice) would have fallen in line because Dole was not going to win.

And, let's face it, if he kept his head down and did nothing (he's good at it) then he would have been leagues better than Obama.

And he blew it. And he doesn't even know it.

I'd rather a greener person whose convictions are clear (Allen West). They can grow into the job (face it, Mitt's not a big risk to die in office - compared to McCain), but changing core beliefs is much harder. I appreciate that Rice was loyal to Bush whom I still credit with keeping us from further terror attacks, but I do not want to rehash the Iraq War and War on Terror. So basically if Condi somehow really was the pick (doubtful), I would not be ashamed of having her as VP - far from it - but it would not in any way calm my fears about Mitt's centrist tendencies.

That said, read her foreign policy outline for George W. Bush in 2000 that underpinned his initial campaign policy. She has written and worked extensively in academic circles while at Stanford, etc. Scowcroft, Schultz, HW, W were all taken aback by her.

There are two connection to Romney that has been overlooked:

(1) her background and initial work was on the Soviet state and Eastern Bloc, IIRC her thesis was on Czechlosovokia. Romney, if you've read him, has something of a hard-on for the Russians as a re-emerging power...

(2) as provost of Stanford, she balanced their "structural deficit" budget.

She really is rockstar: but she lends herself to Republican statesmen, not politician.

175 I'm with ya Ace re Condi.  She comes across to me, as a pandering pick.  She has credentials and it smart no doubt, but the way she pushed back at State many times against the 'Stache..  Too close to Bush /43 and too close to that internationalist mindset.

I think Romney should go bold and pick a scary-ass Tea Party Conservative... constitution FIRST to ally with the Tea Party pickups in the House and Senate.  Tie them together and that allows Romney to play to the middle , if only a bit, but not stand in the way of conservative reform.

I like Condi but, regardless of my desires, Mitt will select Pawlenty because he's seasoned, an ex-gov (of my state), and really boring.

In business, we say, "A's hire A's, and B's hire C's"  Evidence: Obama selected Biden to make himself look better.

Romney is an A and Condi, by his scale, may be an A- or B+ for the job of president.  If this is a hiring position, Condi might not get that spot.

I like Condoleeza Rice but I can't imagine Romney making a VP pick who might detract from his place as focus of the campaign. Look what happened to Brett O'Donnell, the debate coach who helped dramatically turn around Romney's anemic, eye-glazing debate performances during the primaries. Team Romney fired O'Donnell, who wasn't courting publicity, for getting publicity. Given that mindset, I imagine Romney would be likely to pick the least charismatic, least noticeable and most inoffensively whitebread VP candidate he can find--which of course immediately leaves Jindal, Ryan and Rubio out of the running. President Obama's choice for running mate in 2008 came down to Evan Bayh and Joe Biden. He chose Biden for pretty much the same reason. Nothing must outshine the glory that is The One.

It's a shame, really. Although John Adams rightfully complained about the irrelevance of the office, several times throughout our history the Vice Presidency has become very relevant very quickly. We need good people in that position whatever their party affiliation.

I like her, but I will admit that I like her most because she's a poke in the eye  to people who still push the caricature that the GOP is 99.5% white and male.  Admittedly one of the main reasons I liked Palin.

Not the ONLY reason, but I am self-aware enough to notice that it is one of them.

Condi is literally out of nowhere.  Honestly, what has she been doing the last four years?  Nothing that's made it onto the moronosphere.  So yes, I think she's a head-fake to float the name, take some fire, and then cry out, "Oh no!  You've absolutely ruined my bestest, first-choice!  Now I'm forced to go with my second choice of *actual first choice's name*!"

In retrospect, this is what Sarah Palin should have been for McCain.  But instead, McCain screwed it up and went with the head-fake as the acutal VP.  Then she took the flak, but he couldn't replace her.

Her inclusion wouldn't do a single thing to win over black voters, nor would it even slightly stem the cries of "RACISM!" from Obama's allies.

She's a bit of a RINO, has little in the way of executive experience, none on economic matters and has never held elected office.  She wouldn't be a compelling conservative successor to Mitt should he win.

She might bring some foreign policy chops, but foreign policy isn't going to be a deciding factor in this election.  Even then, her expertise was geared toward the Russians.

As provost of Stanford, she balanced the supposed "structural deficit" within 2 years and had a surplus in that last year IIRC.

What did Obama do that was comparable in terms of economic matters? And paying for blow or finagling a lifetime membership at the 'Man's Country Club of Chicago" doesn't count.

“It started when George W. Bush allowed Condaleeza Rice to take control of his foreign policy during Bush’s second term. It was Condi Rice who constantly favored ‘engagement’ with Syria while Basher Assad made Syria a transit point for arms and fighters headed into Iraq to kill Americans. It was Condi Rice who virtually jammed UNSCR 1701, UNFIL and the travesty of a ceasefire down Israel’s throat at a point when the war could actually have resulted in the defeat of Hezbollah..although to be fair, she had the help of Ehud Olmert and Tzipi Livni, the weakest leaders in Israel’s history. It was Condi Rice who insisted on inviting Syria to the the gang rape of Israel in Annapolis, which signaled clearly to the March 14th movement that they had better come to terms with Assad while they could, and who saw to it that millions in US aid were pumped into Lebanon even after Lebanon’s President Suleiman signed a defense pact with Iran.”

The election will not turn on Mitt's VP pick. However, I think she rounds Mitt out. Obviously, they compliment each other demographically: gender, race, religion, orientation, hometown etc, but their experience and expertise is also complimentary. He's a successful businessman and governor with a background in finance. She's a brilliant wonkish intellectual who happens to also have been a controversial tough-as-nails NSA and SecState. I don't think she really appeals to any specific voter bloc, but she's more than fit for the job. She won't be the kind of VP who spends time corralling rambunctious legislators, but she would be a good spokesperson for the administration and her diplomatic experience and insight into Russia would help Romney better represent our interests. I suppose I could get used to the idea, but I think of Condi more as the super-capable nerd that you sign on to take care of important things. She has no experience as a politician, or running a government, but I suppose you could say that her job did at least deal with political issues, and she was the head of various organizations, so she does have some sort of executive experience.

The irony is that Hillary has gone pretty far, seems to have successfully claimed to have executive experience by being in the White House. This, even though she (unlike Condi) had no official duties, and even the only small thing she ran (her office) had a scandal. Managing to have a scandal as the First Lady must take some doing, and the part about documents mysteriously disappearing and reappearing in one of the most secure places in the world still strikes me as especially outrageous. But I digress.

Count me as an admirer of Rice's service to the country who doesnt think she did a very good job in the Big Leagues and would imo be a rolling disaster as a VP pick.

The most obvious problem is that she knows next to nothing about the economic disaster unfolding in this country, and has no emotional connection whatsoever to the large part of the country's struggling middle class who will decide this election.

She doesnt speak Tea Party language, and imo she has ZERO ability or willingness to stop a liberal TV interview in its track when Pro-Bama bias rears its ugly and inevitably predictable head.

If the GOP VP nominee cannot connect with disaffected voters this year on the stump and on TV with openly hostile Pro-Obama reporters, then the ticket is in serious trouble.

Gov Jindal and Rep Ryan can do that in their sleep. To a lesser degree so can Trob Portlenty. Rice, not so much.

It doesnt mean shes a bad person or insufficiently useful to the country. But it does mean to me that she should never ever be seriously considered for VPOTUS.

Posted by: MikeD at July 13, 2012 12:52 PM (p8QOg)

236 I'm not necessarily going for the fake, but I'm glas there was at least a day of buzz about Condi. Seriously, Condi spoke at the 2000 RNC Convention and killed it. Probably the best speech of the convention, including W's. Got multiple standing ovations. She is a REALLY good public speaker. She is everything we want a woman in public office to be - smart, competent, funny but not comedic, classy, humble, and able to speak forcefully without being shrill and reminding you of your first wife. I think she would be a staggeringly brilliant choice as VP, ESPECIALLY because she voted for Obama. She is an expert on Russia, which is something the next President will need. She has served as both Secretary of State and National Security Advisor. I happen to think Romney needs some foreign policy cred, more than he needs to lock up this swing state or that demographic. He's going to have an entire debate on foreign policy, and he'll have a lot on his plate in that area once he is elected. As VP, Rice could handle all that stiff while Romney concentrates on the economy.

Posted by: rockmom at July 13, 2012 12:55 PM (vvEHK)

237 OK, I've reviewed enough commentary that I don't like the idea of Condi as VP at all now. And that was before I read the claim that she voted for Obama. The only possible reasons for THAT could be 1) racism 2) stupidity or gross incompetence or 3) a devotion to Marxism. That, alone, completely disqualifies her, in my book - you might want to think that through a little more, if you consider that a "plus".

Posted by: Optimizer at July 13, 2012 01:02 PM (As94z)

Certainly competent at what she has done but the number 1 reason to choose a GOP VP running mate?

Votes.

If chosen, there would be an initial interest but it would fade and her Bush associations would drag Romney down - not a lot, but no net positive.

Cheney seemed to always be butting heads with her.  It Cheney gives her the thumbs down, so be it.

This is whole thing is just noise and distraction right now.  Romney should not make an early announcement just to keep people guessing and to keep his options open until the convention.  Two can play the distraction game.

I'm giving Rubio 50/50 odds right now.

I think romney needs to get completely away from the bush presidency, in every way possible.  Forge new ground.  Pick a VP that's sort of fresh and new.  Not only and having the yoke of a much derided administration around her neck.

243 The anti condi comments are fucking bewildering. What the fuck happened to the commenters here. Y'all used to be beautiful.

Condi would be a good choice if she wasn't a member of the Bush administration for 8 years. If you think Obama is running hard against Bush now just imagine if there was an actual tie to Bush on the ticket.

It's the same reason I don't want Portman to be the VP.

Rice is an anti-Israel, pro-abortion RINO; and Palin thinks she'd be "wonderful"? I've always argued that Palin wasn't nearly as conservative as her worshippers claimed. This,  coupled with Palin's endorsement of Hatch,  is vindication.

Palin has ALWAYS played identity politics with her gender. She played the "good old BOYS club" in AK and she endorsed RINO Fiorina over  Conservative  Chuck Devore even tho they were tied in the polls  at the time... all because  Fiorina is female.

Rice is  not only anti-Israel but she was against the surge in Iraq.  Completely incompetant.

All that said, I'm not in the least worried Mitt will choose a Boooooshie.  Mitt's too smart  to hand O  a alking point  on a silver platter.

Yes, I dislike Rice  because  she's pretty and successful -- not at ALL because of her dismal policy! Of course not! It cannot possibly be because Rice is for murdering unborn babies or forcing Israel to give up land, or being against the surge, or being a Boooshie. Nope. It's all because I'm JEALOUS. I base everything on looks and not on policy merely because I'm female.  Thank you SO much for pointing this out to me, O sexist wise one!

249 I don't like the way that the MSM is trying to dictate Romney's VP pick.  I DON'T see Rice as a strong VP pick, I don't see her as a strong VP.  I COULD see her as Ambassador to some important country or something else statesmanship-like.

This pushing of Condi Rice seems to be a tactic to buffalo the Romney camp into a VP pick they might not want to take.  And if it works it doesn't give much hope for a Romney Presidency.  But, hopefully, I don't see it working.

250 THANK YOU ACE! Glad I'm not the only one who's totally underwhelmed by Condi Rice. She may be smart as a whip, but she's a DISMAL public speaker. And she has NEVER run for elected office, therefore has absolutely no experience campaigning. And if she's lackluster to begin with, how much MORE lackluster will she be given that she was so enamored of the idea of a black president back in 2008 that she couldn't even be bothered to publicly support the GOP ticket. Plus, she will immediately be painted by the Democrats as Bush III, queen of the hated "neocons," since she played THE key role in Bush's foreign policy. I have the opposite gripe against her -- I feel that she really sold Israel down the river during Bush's second term. That is almost as hard for me to forgive as her pro-legal-abortion views.

251 OK, I'll say it. Her looks are so hideous she HAS to be a democrat.

She's white now.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at July 13, 2012 03:21 PM (bxiXv) Obviously, you don't remember the incredibly racist editorial-page cartoons about Condi by Oliphant and others.

254 Y'all naifs don't seem to realize that the point (THE point) of choosing Rice is RACE- kinda hard to accuse the Republican Party of racism and sexism when they're running a BLACK WOMAN.  That's REALPOLITICK and we need to quit ignoring it, being ashamed of it, and getting our asses stomped by it-

Posted by: DAve at July 13, 2012 05:42 PM (BoI09)

255 Dave, I totally disagree. Racism is when you ONLY see someone's skin color. Tokenism is disgusting and embarrassing. Our opponents would very correctly call us cynical. Intelligence and decency in this matter consist of selecting the BEST person for the job, no matter their race or gender. This is so obvious to me, I'm amazed it's even up for discussion.

256 I'm neither for nor against the Condi Rice as Veep prospect. You could certainly do worse. I gotta disagree with those who say she's a poor public speaker. The first time I heard her, long before there was a Bush administration, she absolutely blew me away with a very stirring speech that really got my attention. Later I was not surprised in the least when she emerged in the Bush Admin. The lady can really wind up and uncork stunning speeches.

257 Check out Condi's speech at the 2000 Republican convention. Or her articles in Foreign Affairs Quarterly. She actually has the intellectual ability that Obama imagines he has. I think she'd be a great president, which should be the criteria for a VP pick.
