Welcome to National Talk Like A Pirate day which multiple morons reminded me about earlier in the week but of course I promptly forgot about. Which is about SOP for the USS AoSHQ of the Skull&Bones fleet. Arrggh.
Romney is Doomed-Doomed-DOOMED!
But apparently no one told the people being polled.
AP: Obama's up, 47 percent to 46 percent, among likely voters. Fascinatingly, when it's registered voters, Obama's up, 50 percent to 40 percent. Among adults, Obama's up, 52 percent to 37 percent.USA Today: Obama's up nationwide, 47 percent to 46 percent. In the 12 swing states, Obama's up 48 percent to 46 percent.
Kind of amazing how often Obama's hitting . . . 47 percent in polls lately.
According to the conventional wisdom, Mitt Romney's Libya comment, and the furious denunciation from the Gang of 500, was supposed to be hurting him in the polls conducted in recent days.
Leader of Attack on US Consulate in Libya was Released From Gitmo in 2007
But, but I was totally assured by the Democrats that most of the detainees at Gitmo were just innocent goat herders at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Ben Franklin's Thoughts on Signing the Constitution 225 Years Ago
A wise and worldly man that we were very lucky to have as a founder.
"I confess that there are several parts of this Constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure I shall never approve them: For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise. It is therefore that the older I grow, the more apt I am to doubt my own judgment, and to pay more respect to the judgment of others."
"I doubt too whether any other Convention we can obtain may be able to make a better Constitution. For when you assemble a number of men to have the advantage of their joint wisdom, you inevitably assemble with those men, all their prejudices, their passions, their errors of opinion, their local interests, and their selfish views. From such an Assembly can a perfect production be expected? It therefore astonishes me, Sir, to find this system approaching so near to perfection as it does; and I think it will astonish our enemies, who are waiting with confidence to hear that our councils are confounded like those of the Builders of Babel; and that our States are on the point of separation, only to meet hereafter for the purpose of cutting one another's throats. Thus I consent, Sir, to this Constitution because I expect no better, and because I am not sure, that it is not the best."
Well Rusty at The Jawa Report pretty well summarizes my feelings about Muslims, Islam, and anything to do with Islamic culture after years of hot and cold war.
Not caring about what happens in the Muslim world is a cathartic and liberating experience. You should try it.If a country can't protect our embassy, the answer is to close the embassy. If a country takes $1 billion of our dollars, and then returns the favor by indicting our citizens for religious "crimes", then stop giving them money.
If the Muslim world wishes to join the 21st century, I wish them all the luck in the world.
But if they don't? It's not my problem. I just don't care anymore.
I don't care about nation building in Afghanistan anymore. I don't care about the Muslim Brotherhood being in power in Egypt anymore. Let al Qaeda take over Tunisia. I. Just. Don't. Care.
Our foreign policy towards the Muslim world should simply be this: leave us the f*ck alone, if you don't we will utterly annihilate you. We will not invade. We will not depose. We will not nation build. We will destroy.
And if after being destroyed you choose to f*ck with us again, we will destroy you again. Until either you stop f*cking with us or you are all dead.
The nuclear option is on the table.
We will put no more American lives at risk to give you freedom. American freedom was won by American blood. Afghan freedom will be won by Afghan blood. Iraqi freedom will be won by Iraqi blood. Etc.
I've had it. I'm checking out. It's not my problem anymore. Call me when you've matured. I'm moving on.
So long Muslim world, and thanks for all the fish!
It's always been true that wars become more and more cruel the longer they go on. And a large part of this is just sheer fatigue and exhaustion from the endless killing and fighting. When the reserves of restraint and forbearance run low, you start thinking real hard about The Unthinkable.

Manimal The Movie is coming out after almost 30 years of development. I never saw any of the original series' very very short run but it did give David Letterman jokes all throughout the 80's.
Manimal followed Dr. Jonathan Chase, a wealthy doctor with a mysterious past, who morphed into animals in order to help the police fight crime.
Oh Noes -Lady GaGa Has Pissed off the Muslims
By wearing a burqa with a 'cunt' handbag.
"That (handbag) comes across as a clear insult to Muslims and Islam," said a Chicago-based representative of several Muslim groups, who asked not to be identified. I'm hearing that the uproar is leading to a big increase in Lady Gaga's security detail.
Well this is one fatwa I'm pretty indifferent about. Oh and has the word gotten out yet about Madonna and Kim Kardashian's new line of koranic toilet paper?
So When Did Bare Breasts Become Taboo?
Well about 3000 years ago judging by statues and drawings. But just a few hundred years ago the bare boobies made a mini-comeback:
The French aristocracy was the first to challenge the taboo. During the 1300s, necklines began to plunge and clothing became tighter, exposing the shape of the breast. Agnès Soler, the mistress to French King Charles VII, shocked the court by appearing in a painting with one breast fully exposed in the late 1400s. The most provocative ladies of Venice and England are said to have walked the streets bare-breasted in the following century. There are even hints that Queen Elizabeth I herself exposed all or nearly all of her breasts to guests, which, if true, might provide some comfort to the young Duchess of Cambridge. But the trend was temporary, and the general prohibition on bare breasts in European society was firmly entrenched again by the 1600s.

Anyhoo - those polls are whacked out on scooby snacks - Rachel Madcow just told me Obama winning by a landslide and even those pesky polls that show him with only a 1 point lead, well when you break it down by the issues Obama beats Romney by like 15 points on every issue.

Whoa...
Not surprising to me. It was always obvious that the eagerness that the WH threw the Secret Service under the bus was not because the SS was sneaking in $40 hookers, but because the higher ups were sneaking in $4000 hookers.

Start with Egypt
Close the embassy. Inform all Americans that they need to get out of said country.
Sever diplomatic relations.
Stop sending them any money.
Cancel all visas, including Permanent Residency visas (say, "Hey, too bad.")
Once you get all the Egyptian nationals out of the country, pick another country.
Repeat until there are no muslim foreign nationals in the country.

All had R+3-4 in 2004 didn't they?
Interestingly, I think Romney is still up with Independents in these polls, or tied at worst, so split the difference between 2004 and 2008 turnout and it's a tie. Pretty much consistent with what we all know.
Interesting that CO and NH seem to be shifting slowly into the R column too.....

The thing that interests me about Iowa is not that Obama won it by double digits last time, but that it only has 6 Electoral Votes.
Fighting tooth and nail for 6EV is not the behaviour of someone who thinks he's well ahead. It's the behaviour of someone who knows he has to scrounge every vote possible to win.

I agree but man, it's tough here in Mass. Baby steps but I'm getting there. Example - moonbat brotherinlaw proclaims he won't vote for Fauxahontas Warren but will vote for Scott Brown. I basically toldl him big deal Brown's a rino anyway and all he wanted was some street cred for voting against an absolute fraud. Now he can act all reasonable like by saying he voted for a "rethuglican"

We don't need to retake the oil fields... we just need the Dam US Government to get out of the way of us using our own existing resources.
Get rid of the law saying we can't reprocess nuclear waste.... and get some dam nuke plants built... drill for oil and gas... and give tax rebates to Gas Stations who put in Compressed Natural Gas Pumps (and to people who convert their cars)....
And suddenly? The MidEast looses ALL of their power over the US Economy.

MIAMI – Facing tough questions about his commitment to all Americans, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney declared Wednesday that his campaign supports "the 100 percent in America."
"I know that I'm not going to get 100 percent of the vote and my campaign will focus on those people we think we can bring in to support me, but this is a campaign about helping people who need help," Romney said.

The good news for Romney is that among voters who are “extremely” interested in this year’s election, the races are much tighter. Obama is up by just two points with this group in Virginia (49-47 percent), Florida is tied (48-48 percent), and Romney is up by one point in Ohio (48-47 percent).
Independents are nearly evenly divided in each of the states, as well.
Majorities of voters are unhappy with how things are going in the country, yet in all three states more say they trust Obama than Romney to improve the economy.

Virginia Senate: Kaine (D) 47%, Allen (R) 45%
New Hampshire: Romney 48%, Obama 45%

New Obama ‘98 Video: Jokes About People Calling Ideas He Supports ‘Soviet’, But Says That‘s a ’Good Sign’
On June 8th, 1998 the Brookings Institution invited then-State Senator Barack Obama to speak on a panel it was holding in Chicago. The panel covered the economic revitalization of the inner cities and was moderated by NPR host Ray Suerez.
At one point in the three hour long panel, Obama was chided by Suarez about the poor economic condition of his district. When talking about the downtrodden parts of Obama’s district Suarez snipes, ”There is not a single building on two-thirds of Oakwood Boulevard. It’s pretty amazing.” One of the other panelists chips in, “He’s gonna get depressed up here, Ray,” referring to Obama.

The annual Economic Freedom of the World report, released Tuesday, has Canada tied in fifth place with Australia — up one spot from last year. Hong Kong remains at the top, Singapore’s next, then New Zealand.
Meanwhile, the United States, once a “standard bearer” of economic liberty among industrial nations, spiralled 10 spots from the 2011 rankings to 18th place — its lowest position ever, and a huge drop from its second place spot in 2000.

Money quote: "The Florida Times Union has said 11,365 people registered as Democratic voters in the 13 months that ended at the end of August, compared with an average of 209,425 for the same periods before the 2004 and 2008 presidential elections.Meanwhile, 128,039 Republicans have registered in the state over the past 13 months, up from an average of 103,555 in the same period in 2004 and 2008, the newspaper said."
For whatever reasons, NEW voter registrations in Florida are HUGELY down for Dems.
There's a facebook chart link in the comments which shows these numbers:
2004/2008/2012
Reps 111586/95525/128039
Dems 158957/259894/11365 (yes, that's an insignificant 11,365)
Dem groups are scrambling to catch up (according to the article) but there's no way they can. Maybe this is due to voter ID laws or maybe just due to Dem voter apathy. Look at the increased Republican voter enthusiasm difference n registration numbers as well.
I think (and hope and pray) that it's going to be really hard (as in maybe impossible) for Obama to win Florida this year!!

On the other hand, the Dems NEED the GOP to blame their failures on, and for the MBM and Hollywood to fill in their bad guy roles.
Without the GOP, the Dems would suddenly discover that all their constituent groups really don't like each other and have only their hatred of Republicans and "The Man" in common. You'd have them fighting over the money like a pack of spoiled brats arguing over grandpa's estate
Then there's the possibility of primary opponents finding themselves trying to appeal to the bitter clingers.
At any rate, the Dems would move Heaven and earth to keep the GOP alive. They need them more than the voters do

Jacksonville is reliably Conservative although a Dem was seated as Mayor last year. The Rep candidate got too cocky and thought he had it sewn up and the Dem candidate worked the projects to get-out-the-vote. It worked then, but since then he has asked the sheriffs office, already the most efficient in the state, to slash it's budget by millions. Fewer officers on the streets will impact the very people who voted him in.
You can only pull that hope and change shit once.

Think about this: Obama went on Letterman and said two amazing things:
(1) That he expected the Middle East leaders to take care of our people.
(2) That he didn't know what the debt was.
Now here's the thing, we know he just didn't want to say "16 trillion" and Letterman, even if he wasn't in the tank, doesn't actually know anything. So we give Obama a pass by letting him get away with the lie when we battle the truth.
Sorry, I'm taking Obama at his word and that complete incompetent moron didn't even know that the debt was 16 trillion.

Obama is a manifest imbecile?
That seems a little.....imprecise.
Uniformed, incurious, lightweight and lazy over-credentialed numbskull, full of gratuitous Left wing homilies and bromides that were stale a generation ago. Basically got a pass all his life as a "clean, well spoken Negro", per Joe Biden, his human foot stool, and has failed upwards at nearly everything he has done. A more unqualified and incompetent man as a President you could not have found that could still be acclaimed as "popular" even at this late date.. His vacuousness and basic lack of knowledge, even now, regarding his job and responsibilities is exceeded only by the lazy, dimwitted and irresponsible member so of the so-called "Fourth Estate", who could not find their collective asses if you gave them a map. A more pathetic, yet learning disabled group of adults would be hard to find outside of a group therapy ward in a mental institution.
In short, a Confederacy of Dunces. They are all idiots and proud of it.

Sidebar: When Ann Margaret visited Bien Hoa and stayed in the 118th Assault Helicopter Co. Officer quarters, a young buck ripped off a pair of her black panties she hand-washed and hung to dry.
After she left, the panties were affixed to a wooden plaque with her name and mounted in the bar. A rite of passage was when a NFG (new fuckin' guy) broke his cherry (took a hit), he was ordered with great fanfare to kiss Ann's panty crotch for good luck and was cheered by the other pilot's. Good times for one and all.

Great post from Mike Shedlock at Global Economic Trends Analysis on California's budgetary madness. Linky thing no worky for me unfortunately.
In a nutshell, taxes in California have increased by 12% since 2011...but total revenues have fallen 6% over the same period. Furthermore sales taxes absolutely cratered, posting a 20% decline year over year.
And the decline in corporate tax revenues is a "Fall of Rome" like 70%!
Go and Google it, for it is a excellent rebuttal to anyone who believes that more taxes are the remedy to the federal government's budgetary madness.

Apparently Pannetta is over there to try and resolve this dispute except he won't take sides, and Hadley said Japan has had those islands since the 1880's and China has no legal claim. And he said the attack on the ambassador's car was from a state-approved mob (the only kind they have in Beijing), so the Chinese were sending us a message.
He was really, really angry. There was also a news correspondent on from one of the major papers (WSJ I think) and he backed him up.

The ones showing women dressed in masque costumes, well I guess you can say it's "theatrical" and not meant to be taken seriously, but there's a lot of a just a little gauze between your gaze and boobage. (For example, check out "Portrait of a Lady, dressed as Flora" by Isaac Oliver on Wikipedia Commons.)
(Funny, I keep initially typing "portratit"...)
Then there's stuff like the portrait of Frances, Countess of Somerset at the National Portrait Gallery in London, with daring decolletage made even more prominent in engravings made after the likeness.
The one that never ceases to astonish me is the portrait of Elizabeth, Countess of Kent, at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. Nothing could be primmer than the blackness of the fabric and the stiffness of the lace, but the neckline plunges clear beneath the breasts -- and just in case you fail to notice that, the string of her ruff falls precipitously just beside cleavage line to end at a big underboob bow for emphasis.
(Apologize for not linking, but my feeble skills quail at facing the dreaded Pixy. Besides, you've got enough clues to look for yourselves, and if you're too lazy to look for bazongas then you're not worthy of the name Moron.)

Barkeep: "What's with the paper towel"?

If CFA doesn't shitcan that guy with extreme prejudice, and I mean yesterday, then the gay lobby talking points win: CFA was happy to take your support and money, but they are now officially in the business of cheerleading for sodomy.

I have noticed that even though democrats completely dominate California, there are about 8 million republicans that will never get to vote for a winner in that state. The best way for these California conservatives to make a difference is to move to Washington, Oregon and Nevada. Not only would these instantly become red states, but they would also gain electoral votes.
In our most recent governors race (Oregon) the Republican lost by about 6,000 votes. California wouldn't even notice that many people leaving. There have been close races for the Senate and Congress in most western states except California.

The Soviets didn't get everything wrong like Obama does.
Their methods for dealing with terrorists/hijackers were quite effective, and they designed weapon systems that could be built by less than expert factory workers, employed in less than ideal conditions, and operated by less than expert troops.
I've got some inexpensive Soviet era model airplane engines, and they work quite well, as does my Soviet era Makarov pistol. Obama era shit catches fire or blows up in your face, and is obscenely expensive.
Obama delivers all the suck with none of the good, and does it for 4X what it should cost.

Well, we were exporting Californians there at a pretty good clip when our property values were suicidal (instead of just crazy like now). High efficiency my ass, I had one for a month, and I would watch that fucker spin and spin and spin, occasionally spritz a little water on the clothes, tie them up into little balls, and I would end up with little balls of socks and clothes that still had dry spots from where they never got wet in the first place. I returned it after a month and got a regular one. Piece of shit it was.

The origin of the word buccaneer.
If you've ever eaten at Chipotle, you probably already know that our word barbecue comes from barbacoa. The word barbacoa was coined by Spanish explorers to describe a method of cooking meat used commonly by the Latin American natives they encountered. I'm not sure of the exact etymology of the word; I just heard this story second-hand from a friend recently.
Anyway, the word used by the French for this cooking style was boucan (not sure of the spelling). This style of cooking later became so popular with pirates, it came to be associated with them. They loved making landfall on deserted islands to barbecue up some wild boar; it was a nice treat for the men, and it didn't require the risks of visiting a town.
So, yeah, buccaneer derives from that French word boucan (by way of boucaneur?), and basically means barbecuer.

The last few times I watched the election results and they showed California at the bottom, I was stunned to see the vote count for the republican candidate was triple the population of Oregon and they still lost by over 10 million votes. Later on volokh I had to argue with the same set of defectives, and a blogger, about how division or a ratio is never translated to "and" and that only the dimmest of bulbs (who could obviously never crack 420 on the math section of the SAT) could ever do that. They actually went searching for examples of "and" being used for division and ratios. LOL. THey came back with fudges of "between ... and" to which I laughed my ass off while explaing to them that Barky's "profit AND earnings ratio" was tantamount to describing highway speeds as "65 minutes and hours". After that I was pretty much done with volokh. It's pretty much of a joke of a site.

If you're tired of the cheaper toy tools, give it a look. The kit came with two of the larger size battery packs, and I bought two of the smaller size ones too after using the stuff for a while. The lighter weight of the smaller packs is an advantage sometimes...
The sawzall has awesome power. I was cutting 4" tree limbs with it no problem. The hammer drill is beefy and weighs a bit, so its probably got a metal gearbox rather than the nylon stuff in cheaper products.

Tippi Hedren is saying that Hitchcock ended her career because she didn't respond to passes he made toward her.
Well, for one thing, she didn't have an acting career before he plucked her from the diet drink commercials she was making. He handed it to her on a silver platter.
And for another, Hitchcock is dead. That makes it fairly difficult for him to defend himself against allegations of that sort.
I'll take it with a grain of salt and continue to enjoy his brilliance.

I guess I should point out that thousands of shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles were pillaged, along with a lot of of other military hardware, from Qaddaffi warehouses during the uprising.

"The climax of The Birds was filmed with five days' worth of live birds thrown at actress Tippi Hedren, instead of the mechanical birds she had been promised. The blood from the birds hitting her and the terror she expresses was genuine, and she was ordered a week's rest after breaking down crying onset, when she reported 'nightmares filled with flapping wings'. Yep, good stuff, doesn't violate any nuclear treaties either...
I've been pondering a much smaller scale orbital device that would allow for dispersal/elimination of mobs. Small steerable reentry vehicle about the size of a duffel bag full of dumb steel fleschettes. At about 1,000' AGL, the canister pops open and a small compressed air charge disperses the fleschettes in about a 100' diameter pattern for the rest of the descent.
Its not a guaranteed kill by any means, but if one of the perpetrators hits your head, you're a dead man.
I think just knowing that such a system was in orbit might calm a lot of people down, or at least slow them down by having to "protest" under 1/2" steel plate shields.
Probably 40 or 50 of these deployment pods could be crammed into the orbital platform. The GPS targeting should be physically hardwired to not deploy over CONUS or anything that you wouldn't want hit in case the system got hijacked..

I suspect there was a different reason for it, though. They had to carry water on board, because there was no way to purify seawater back then. It'd sit in barrels, and get all musty and stale and gross, not to mention having all sorts of interesting microscopic critters living in it. Adding rum to it killed those critters, and covered up the swampy taste it probably had. That's my theory.

Yep. I believe it was Clinton, back in the day, when the slobbering media was questioning him on the weighty issues of the day, like his choice of underwear, (boxers or briefs Mr. President????), that one of their number committed a serious breach by asking him about the state of the country. He responded that we had too many freedoms in this country, the freest country on earth, and we could do with a few.....restrictions.

it's a 50 year old classic. If you haven't seen it yet, that's on you, not them. This is akin to people bitching about other ruining the Lord Of The Rings ending of the movies
That being said, not one of my favorite Hitchcock films
