Ye Olde Overnight Open Thread (9-19-2012)– Arggh Edition
— Maetenloch

Welcome to National Talk Like A Pirate day which multiple morons reminded me about earlier in the week but of course I promptly forgot about. Which is about SOP for the USS AoSHQ of the Skull&Bones fleet. Arrggh.

Romney is Doomed-Doomed-DOOMED!

But apparently no one told the people being polled.

AP: Obama's up, 47 percent to 46 percent, among likely voters. Fascinatingly, when it's registered voters, Obama's up, 50 percent to 40 percent. Among adults, Obama's up, 52 percent to 37 percent.

USA Today: Obama's up nationwide, 47 percent to 46 percent. In the 12 swing states, Obama's up 48 percent to 46 percent.

Kind of amazing how often Obama's hitting . . . 47 percent in polls lately.

According to the conventional wisdom, Mitt Romney's Libya comment, and the furious denunciation from the Gang of 500, was supposed to be hurting him in the polls conducted in recent days.

Leader of Attack on US Consulate in Libya was Released From Gitmo in 2007

But, but I was totally assured by the Democrats that most of the detainees at Gitmo were just innocent goat herders at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Ben Franklin's Thoughts on Signing the Constitution 225 Years Ago

A wise and worldly man that we were very lucky to have as a founder.

"I confess that there are several parts of this Constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure I shall never approve them: For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise. It is therefore that the older I grow, the more apt I am to doubt my own judgment, and to pay more respect to the judgment of others."
"I doubt too whether any other Convention we can obtain may be able to make a better Constitution. For when you assemble a number of men to have the advantage of their joint wisdom, you inevitably assemble with those men, all their prejudices, their passions, their errors of opinion, their local interests, and their selfish views. From such an Assembly can a perfect production be expected? It therefore astonishes me, Sir, to find this system approaching so near to perfection as it does; and I think it will astonish our enemies, who are waiting with confidence to hear that our councils are confounded like those of the Builders of Babel; and that our States are on the point of separation, only to meet hereafter for the purpose of cutting one another's throats. Thus I consent, Sir, to this Constitution because I expect no better, and because I am not sure, that it is not the best."

A Giant Case of Islam Fatigue

Well Rusty at The Jawa Report pretty well summarizes my feelings about Muslims, Islam, and anything to do with Islamic culture after years of hot and cold war.

Not caring about what happens in the Muslim world is a cathartic and liberating experience. You should try it.

If a country can't protect our embassy, the answer is to close the embassy. If a country takes $1 billion of our dollars, and then returns the favor by indicting our citizens for religious "crimes", then stop giving them money.

If the Muslim world wishes to join the 21st century, I wish them all the luck in the world.

But if they don't? It's not my problem. I just don't care anymore.

I don't care about nation building in Afghanistan anymore. I don't care about the Muslim Brotherhood being in power in Egypt anymore. Let al Qaeda take over Tunisia. I. Just. Don't. Care.

Our foreign policy towards the Muslim world should simply be this: leave us the f*ck alone, if you don't we will utterly annihilate you. We will not invade. We will not depose. We will not nation build. We will destroy.

And if after being destroyed you choose to f*ck with us again, we will destroy you again. Until either you stop f*cking with us or you are all dead.

The nuclear option is on the table.

We will put no more American lives at risk to give you freedom. American freedom was won by American blood. Afghan freedom will be won by Afghan blood. Iraqi freedom will be won by Iraqi blood. Etc.

I've had it. I'm checking out. It's not my problem anymore. Call me when you've matured. I'm moving on.

So long Muslim world, and thanks for all the fish!

It's always been true that wars become more and more cruel the longer they go on. And a large part of this is just sheer fatigue and exhaustion from the endless killing and fighting. When the reserves of restraint and forbearance run low, you start thinking real hard about The Unthinkable.

Well Finally!

Manimal The Movie is coming out after almost 30 years of development. I never saw any of the original series' very very short run but it did give David Letterman jokes all throughout the 80's.

Manimal followed Dr. Jonathan Chase, a wealthy doctor with a mysterious past, who morphed into animals in order to help the police fight crime.

Oh Noes -Lady GaGa Has Pissed off the Muslims

By wearing a burqa with a 'cunt' handbag.

"That (handbag) comes across as a clear insult to Muslims and Islam," said a Chicago-based representative of several Muslim groups, who asked not to be identified. I'm hearing that the uproar is leading to a big increase in Lady Gaga's security detail.

Well this is one fatwa I'm pretty indifferent about. Oh and has the word gotten out yet about Madonna and Kim Kardashian's new line of koranic toilet paper?

So When Did Bare Breasts Become Taboo?

Well about 3000 years ago judging by statues and drawings. But just a few hundred years ago the bare boobies made a mini-comeback:

The French aristocracy was the first to challenge the taboo. During the 1300s, necklines began to plunge and clothing became tighter, exposing the shape of the breast. Agnès Soler, the mistress to French King Charles VII, shocked the court by appearing in a painting with one breast fully exposed in the late 1400s. The most provocative ladies of Venice and England are said to have walked the streets bare-breasted in the following century. There are even hints that Queen Elizabeth I herself exposed all or nearly all of her breasts to guests, which, if true, might provide some comfort to the young Duchess of Cambridge. But the trend was temporary, and the general prohibition on bare breasts in European society was firmly entrenched again by the 1600s.

They also owe America but like that's going to happen. Hell CNN reporters probably have more protection and security then what the Obama Administration left Chris Stevens with--on the anniversary of 9/11 no less.

While much of the attention in the case has focused on the actions of Secret Service personnel, multiple law enforcement and congressional sources tell FoxNews.com that investigators also discovered two White House advance team members checked in prostitutes as overnight guests at a Cartagena hotel in the days before President Obama's April 13 visit." Anyone who knows anything about arabs knows that you NEVER give back things won in war without getting very much in return - and that dos not include promises of anything since arab promises aren't worth dick. The only thing that scares arabs is losing land and losing stuff. Once they fight with anyone and lose some land and stuff, it MUST BE KEPT. But, the West will never learn.

77 This is what we should do.
Start with Egypt
Close the embassy.  Inform all Americans that they need to get out of said country.
Sever diplomatic relations.
Stop sending them any money.

@76

All had R+3-4 in 2004 didn't they?

Interestingly, I think Romney is still up with Independents in these polls, or tied at worst, so split the difference between 2004 and 2008 turnout and it's a tie. Pretty much consistent with what we all know.

Interesting that CO and NH seem to be shifting slowly into the R column too.....

And she is essentially doing what the cartoon publishers did, which is to say we have the right to blaspheme against all gods and that includes yours too Ali. Now, I think offense for the sake of offense is a cheap trick, but if you are going to do it and say it is brave to do so while offering a hecklers veto to savages, it's even cheaper. If you are going to offend people who promise to kill you for doing so and have a history of keeping that promise, okay I am going to say that is brave. So let's see if the President of Egypt dares to issue a warrant for her arrest. Or is his bravery a ballless pose, too?

108 Here's why nobody is seeing many Romney ads... Breaking in the NYT... "Despite what appears to be a plump bank account and an in-house production studio that cranks out multiple commercials a day, Mr. RomneyÂ’s campaign has been tightfisted with its advertising budget, leaving him at a disadvantage in several crucial states as President Obama blankets them with ads. One major reason appears to be that Mr. RomneyÂ’s campaign finances have been significantly less robust than recent headlines would suggest. Much of the more than $300 million the campaign reported raising this summer is earmarked for the Republican National Committee, state Republican organizations and Congressional races, limiting the money Mr. RomneyÂ’s own campaign has to spend." http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/20/us/politics /romney-campaign-cautious-with-ad-budget- even-in-key-states.html?_r=0

170 One of my favorite Duke stories isn't really a story. On the set of The Cowboys, several of the actors/filmmakers hated him for being such a vocal conservative. Roscoe Lee Browne was totally opposed to him politically, and RLB's friends tried to move heaven and earth to get him to pass on the film. But Browne was a consummate professional like the Duke, and quickly came to an agreement with Wayne to leave their politics behind while working together. Browne was surprised to find that Wayne was extremely literate, with a great love for poetry, and they had a grand old time reciting poetry together between takes. As a side note, The Cowboys has one of my favorite bits of movie badass dialog when the bad guys are about to lynch RLB near the end of the film. "I regret trifling with married women. I'm thoroughly ashamed at cheating at cards. I deplore my occasional departures from the truth. Forgive me for taking your name in vain, my Saturday drunkenness, my Sunday sloth. Above all, forgive me for the men I've killed in anger........and those I am about to"

The good news for Romney is that among voters who are “extremely” interested in this year’s election, the races are much tighter. Obama is up by just two points with this group in Virginia (49-47 percent), Florida is tied (48-48 percent), and Romney is up by one point in Ohio (48-47 percent).

Independents are nearly evenly divided in each of the states, as well.

Majorities of voters are unhappy with how things are going in the country, yet in all three states more say they trust Obama than Romney to improve the economy.

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/

Virginia Senate: Kaine (D) 47%, Allen (R) 45%

New Hampshire: Romney 48%, Obama 45%

Colorado: Romney 47%, Obama 45%

Florida: Obama 48%, Romney 46%

218 Well,Chic Fil A has caved.Guess all that support they got still couldn't stiffen their spine. As a result of the negotiations, Mr. Moreno received a letter signed by John E. Featherston Jr., a senior director of real estate for Chick-fil-A, stating, “The WinShape Foundations is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas.” Mr. Moreno said in an interview Wednesday that he believes the company will stop “using money to fund groups that have antigay causes. They have committed in writing they will not do that.” He said company executives showed him records of its charitable giving for the year that does not include groups such as Focus on the Family, Exodus International or other groups that oppose marriage equality or have fought against the expansion of gay rights… Chick-fil-A, which has more than $4 billion in annual sales, issued a statement on Wednesday that echoed one it produced in July, saying that “going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.”

New Obama ‘98 Video: Jokes About People Calling Ideas He Supports ‘Soviet’, But Says That‘s a ’Good Sign’

On June 8th, 1998 the Brookings Institution invited then-State Senator Barack Obama to speak on a panel it was holding in Chicago.  The panel covered the economic revitalization of the inner cities and was moderated by NPR host Ray Suerez.

At one point in the three hour long panel, Obama was chided by Suarez about the poor economic condition of his district.  When talking about the downtrodden parts of ObamaÂ’s district Suarez snipes, Â”There is not a single building on two-thirds of Oakwood Boulevard.  ItÂ’s pretty amazing.”  One of the other panelists chips in, “HeÂ’s gonna get depressed up here, Ray,” referring to Obama.

231 "Majorities of voters are unhappy with how things are going in the country, yet in all three states more say they trust Obama than Romney to improve the economy. http://www.rasmussenreports.com/ " Sven, If Obama is favored to handle the economy over Romney and voters feel he'll do a better job, what is Mitt's rationale for running? His whole campaign is based on the economy, and the voters don't think he's even capable of doing the crappy job that Obama did. But this can all be explained by the blanketing of ads from the President in the swing states, imo. Tonight in WI during Survivor, there were numerous Obama ads and no ROmney ads. During the Brewers game, tons of Obama and Baldwin ads, and zero Romney or Thompson ads. The GOP always fights with one hand tied behind their back. And it's ridiculous on it's face since all we heard for the last few months was how much money Romney and the GOP was raising and how much of a cash-on-hand advantage they had.

291 Link to a Sept 16 article in the lefty Chicago Tribune called: "Groups race against time to get Florida voters registered":

http://tinyurl.com/bl6b9jo

Money quote: "The Florida Times Union has said 11,365 people registered as Democratic voters in the 13 months that ended at the end of August, compared with an average of 209,425 for the same periods before the 2004 and 2008 presidential elections.Meanwhile, 128,039 Republicans have registered in the state over the past 13 months, up from an average of 103,555 in the same period in 2004 and 2008, the newspaper said."

For whatever reasons, NEW voter registrations in Florida are HUGELY down for Dems.
There's a facebook chart link in the comments which shows these numbers:

2004/2008/2012
Reps 111586/95525/128039
Dems 158957/259894/11365  (yes, that's an insignificant 11,365)

Dem groups are scrambling to catch up (according to the article) but there's no way they can. Maybe this is due to voter ID laws or maybe just due to Dem voter apathy. Look at the increased Republican voter enthusiasm difference n registration numbers as well.

I think (and hope and pray) that it's going to be really hard (as in maybe impossible) for Obama to win Florida this year!!

309 If Romney doesn't win, perhaps the GOP should fold its tent and go Chapter 7.

On the other hand, the Dems NEED the GOP to blame their failures on, and for the MBM and Hollywood to fill in their bad guy roles.

Without the GOP, the Dems would suddenly discover that all their constituent groups really don't like each other and have only their hatred of Republicans and "The Man" in common. You'd have them fighting over the money like a pack of spoiled brats arguing over grandpa's estate

Then there's the possibility of primary opponents finding themselves trying to appeal to the bitter clingers.

At any rate, the Dems would move Heaven and earth to keep the GOP alive. They need them more than the voters do

Jacksonville is reliably Conservative although a Dem was seated as Mayor last year. The Rep candidate got too cocky and thought he had it sewn up and the Dem candidate worked the projects to get-out-the-vote. It worked then, but since then he has asked the sheriffs office, already the most efficient in the state, to slash it's budget by millions. Fewer officers on the streets will impact the very people who voted him in.

It did not look like that to me. I have never seen anything like that in my life. I lived in Turkey for 2 years, and saw car accidents there, and I never saw shouting and celebration like that. And after they pull the body through the door the video stops and is still shots. The videographer obviously edited the film. He is a 22 year old "student" no one knows much about. Somebody needs to scour Al Jezeera web site for complete footage. It looked really bad to me. It did NOT look like they were helping. It looked and sounded like they were celebrating, with his dead body. I am sure the rest of the video will show up on a jihadi website. Hopefully the folks at the Jawa Report are on it. God knows our government is not.

330 Obama had a gaffe but I'll bet you didn't know it.

Think about this: Obama went on Letterman and said two amazing things:
(1) That he expected the Middle East leaders to take care of our people.
(2) That he didn't know what the debt was.

Now here's the thing, we know he just didn't want to say "16 trillion" and Letterman, even if he wasn't in the tank, doesn't actually know anything.  So we give Obama a pass by letting him get away with the lie when we battle the truth.

Sorry, I'm taking Obama at his word and that complete incompetent moron didn't even know that the debt was 16 trillion.

They all called Bush an idiot, but our genius president doesn't know a simple important statistic that every informed person knows easily.

Obama is a manifest imbecile.

341 The Ben Franklin quotes reminds me -- the chair Washington sat in during the federal convention had a half-sun carved on it. Obama is a manifest imbecile?

That seems a little.....imprecise.

Uniformed, incurious, lightweight and lazy over-credentialed numbskull, full of gratuitous Left wing homilies and bromides that were stale a generation ago.  Basically got a pass all his life as a "clean, well spoken Negro", per Joe Biden, his human foot stool, and has failed upwards at nearly everything he has done. A more unqualified and incompetent man as a President you could not have found that could still be acclaimed as "popular" even at this late date..  His vacuousness and basic lack of knowledge, even now, regarding his job and responsibilities is exceeded only by the lazy, dimwitted and irresponsible member so of the so-called "Fourth Estate", who could not find their collective asses if you gave them a map.  A more pathetic, yet learning disabled group of adults would be hard to find outside of a group therapy ward in a mental institution.

In short, a Confederacy of Dunces.  They are all idiots and proud of it.

354 All Property, indeed, except the Savage's temporary Cabin, his Bow, his Matchcoat, and other little Acquisitions, absolutely necessary for his Subsistence, seems to me to be the Creature of public Convention. Hence the Public has the Right of Regulating Descents, and all other Conveyances of Property, and even of limiting the Quantity and the Uses of it. All the Property that is necessary to a Man, for the Conservation of the Individual and the Propagation of the Species, is his natural Right, which none can justly deprive him of: But all Property superfluous to such purposes is the Property of the Publick, who, by their Laws, have created it, and who may therefore by other Laws dispose of it, whenever the Welfare of the Publick shall demand such Disposition. He that does not like civil Society on these Terms, let him retire and live among Savages. He can have no right to the benefits of Society, who will not pay his Club towards the Support of it.

Great post from Mike Shedlock at Global Economic Trends Analysis on California's budgetary madness. Linky thing no worky for me unfortunately.

In a nutshell, taxes in California have increased by 12% since 2011...but total revenues have fallen 6% over the same period. Furthermore sales taxes absolutely cratered, posting a 20% decline year over year.

And the decline in corporate tax revenues is a "Fall of Rome" like 70%!

Go and Google it, for it is a excellent rebuttal to anyone who believes that more taxes are the remedy to the federal government's budgetary madness.

ValleyCentral.com, September 17: Court records show that a derogatory comment made against Islam was the motive in a weekend bomb threat at the University of Texas at Brownsville. UTB police arrested 25-year-old Henry Dewitt McFarland III on a terroristic threat charge on Sunday afternoon. The Harlingen man is accused of phoning in a bomb threat to the UTB campus early Sunday morning. Court records released on Monday show that McFarland made the threat to the National Veteran's Crisis Hotline. McFarland allegedly told the operator is a Marine Corps veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and in the process of converting to Islam. According to the records, McFarland was planning to detonate a bomb in retaliation to a classmate making a derogatory remark against the Muslim faith.

446 Guys,  Stephen Hadley was on the radio talking about the China =Japan dispute and the ambassador's car being attacked by a mob.   I never heard anyone from the Bush administration sound so angry since they left office,  aI mean really angry.

Apparently Pannetta is over there to try and resolve this dispute except he won't take sides,  and Hadley said Japan has had those islands since the 1880's and China has no legal claim.   And he said the attack on the ambassador's car was from a state-approved mob (the only kind they have in Beijing), so the Chinese were sending us a message.

He was really,  really angry.  There was also a news correspondent on from one of the major papers (WSJ I think) and he backed him up.

453 Maybe bare-breastedness was wiped out by 1600s, but mammary flaunting certainly wasn't. There's a fair number of portraits from Jacobean times that make you do a double take.

The ones showing women dressed in masque costumes, well I guess you can say it's "theatrical" and not meant to be taken seriously, but there's a lot of a just a little gauze between your gaze and boobage. (For example, check out "Portrait of a Lady, dressed as Flora" by Isaac Oliver on Wikipedia Commons.)

(Funny, I keep initially typing "portratit"...)

Then there's stuff like the portrait of Frances, Countess of Somerset at the National Portrait Gallery in London, with daring decolletage made even more prominent in engravings made after the likeness.

The one that never ceases to astonish me is the portrait of Elizabeth, Countess of Kent, at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. Nothing could be primmer than the blackness of the fabric and the stiffness of the lace, but the neckline plunges clear beneath the breasts -- and just in case you fail to notice that, the string of her ruff falls precipitously just beside cleavage line to end at a big underboob bow for emphasis.

(Apologize for not linking, but my feeble skills quail at facing the dreaded Pixy. Besides, you've got enough clues to look for yourselves, and if you're too lazy to look for bazongas then you're not worthy of the name Moron.)

485 Florida requires a birth certificate/naturalization papers/pass port, social security number, and a utility bill showing your current address to get a driver's license or Fla ID card.  I'd image this puts a crimp in the effort to register illegals and dead people in Florida.  They've also just finished purging the voter rolls.  It's possible that Florida goes red this election.

They made some nebulous pledge to look closer at  where their non-profit donations go. Hardly "cheerleading for sodomy".

I have noticed that even though democrats completely dominate California, there are about 8 million republicans that will never get to vote for a winner in that state.  The best way for these California conservatives to make a difference is to move to Washington, Oregon and Nevada.  Not only would these instantly become red states, but they would also gain electoral votes.

In our most recent governors race (Oregon) the Republican lost by about 6,000 votes.  California wouldn't even notice that many people leaving.  There have been close races for the Senate and Congress in most western states except California.

498 New Obama ‘98 Video: Jokes About People Calling Ideas He Supports ‘Soviet’, But Says That‘s a ’Good Sign’

The Soviets didn't get everything wrong like Obama does.

Their methods for dealing with terrorists/hijackers were quite effective, and they designed weapon systems that could be built by less than expert factory workers, employed in less than ideal conditions, and operated by less than expert troops.

I've got some inexpensive Soviet era model airplane engines, and they work quite well, as does my Soviet era Makarov pistol.  Obama era shit catches fire or blows up in your face, and is obscenely expensive.

Obama delivers all the suck with none of the good, and does it for 4X what it should cost.

High efficiency my ass, I had one for a month, and I would watch that fucker spin and spin and spin, occasionally spritz a little water on the clothes, tie them up into little balls, and I would end up with little balls of socks and clothes that still had dry spots from where they never got wet in the first place.  I returned it after a month and got a regular one. 522 Fun fact for Talk-Like-A-Pirate Day...

The origin of the word buccaneer.

If you've ever eaten at Chipotle, you probably already know that our word barbecue comes from barbacoa. The word barbacoa was coined by Spanish explorers to describe a method of cooking meat used commonly by the Latin American natives they encountered. I'm not sure of the exact etymology of the word; I just heard this story second-hand from a friend recently.

Anyway, the word used by the French for this cooking style was boucan (not sure of the spelling). This style of cooking later became so popular with pirates, it came to be associated with them. They loved making landfall on deserted islands to barbecue up some wild boar; it was a nice treat for the men, and it didn't require the risks of visiting a town.

So, yeah, buccaneer derives from that French word boucan (by way of boucaneur?), and basically means barbecuer.

Clearly, Barky doesn't bother reading crap and he's even less interested in intel summaries. Aside from that, if he had actually had to work an iPad every day then he wouldn't have been such a total retard with an iPhone, blaming the owner and then explaining that he only has a Blackbarry. The Malevolent Retard never bothered reading any intel summaries, which is fine by me since the less input he has on anything the safer we all are. But I love this new excuse and now doubling back on it. Typical for the Indonesian and his junta. Why anyone in America still accepts this crap (excluding America-haters, of course, who are going to support Barky precisely because they think he's the Avenging Angel of the Third World, too .. little do they know that Barky holds them in as much contempt as he dos civilized people), I'll never know. And I will never forgive any of them for it, either. That time for even possible forgiveness passed many, many years ago.

605 FWIW, I picked up one of these Milwaukee cordless combo kits the other day and am pretty impressed with it so far.  The Li-ion batteries are supposed to hold a charge much longer than the previous generation's NiCad's and they can be topped up with causing any "memory" effects.

http://tinyurl.com/dxv37on

If you're tired of the cheaper toy tools, give it a look.  The kit came with two of the larger size battery packs, and I bought two of the smaller size ones too after using the stuff for a while.  The lighter weight of the smaller packs is an advantage sometimes...

The sawzall has awesome power.  I was cutting 4" tree limbs with it no problem.  The hammer drill is beefy and weighs a bit, so its probably got a metal gearbox rather than the nylon stuff in cheaper products.

Tippi Hedren is saying that Hitchcock ended her career because she didn't respond to passes he made toward her.

Well, for one thing, she didn't have an acting career before he plucked her from the diet drink commercials she was making.  He handed it to her on a silver platter.

And for another, Hitchcock is dead.  That makes it fairly difficult for him to defend himself against allegations of that sort.

I'll take it with a grain of salt and continue to enjoy his brilliance.

637 Apparently Pannetta is over there to try and resolve this dispute except he won't take sides, and Hadley said Japan has had those islands since the 1880's and China has no legal claim. And he said the attack on the ambassador's car was from a state-approved mob (the only kind they have in Beijing), so the Chinese were sending us a message. He was really, really angry. There was also a news correspondent on from one of the major papers (WSJ I think) and he backed him up. Bad things going on in Asia. Posted by: Miss Marple at September 19, 2012 11:36 PM (GoIUi) The U.S. controlled and adminsitered the islands along with the Ryukyus from '45 to '72. It was ours and we gave it to Japan. China has no claim. Frankly, I think we ought to have keep the Rhykus, the trust territories, the canal zone, &c.

640 #638: Here's one thing Hitchcock did to Hedren that was legitimately shitty...

"The climax of The Birds was filmed with five days' worth of live birds thrown at actress Tippi Hedren, instead of the mechanical birds she had been promised. The blood from the birds hitting her and the terror she expresses was genuine, and she was ordered a week's rest after breaking down crying onset, when she reported 'nightmares filled with flapping wings'. I had to look that up.  Most of the members of the various incarnations are still alive, actually.  Jon Lord died a couple of months ago and Tommy Bolin died in '76...well, Richie Blackmore might have let his career die but he's still making music with his wife.  wait, Joe Satriani was in the band at one point?  Wow, no shit.

Yep, good stuff, doesn't violate any nuclear treaties either...

I've been pondering a much smaller scale orbital device that would allow for dispersal/elimination of mobs.  Small steerable reentry vehicle about the size of a duffel bag full of dumb steel fleschettes.  At about 1,000' AGL, the canister pops open and a small compressed air charge disperses the fleschettes in about a 100' diameter pattern for the rest of the descent.

Its not a guaranteed kill by any means, but if one of the perpetrators hits your head, you're a dead man.

I think just knowing that such a system was in orbit might calm a lot of people down, or at least slow them down by having to "protest" under 1/2" steel plate shields.

Probably 40 or 50 of these deployment pods could be crammed into the orbital platform.  The GPS targeting should be physically hardwired to not deploy over CONUS or anything that you wouldn't want hit in case the system got hijacked..

647 The only reason Dems own California, is because Repubs here are gutless... Want to win? Tell the calif voters you have a choice... Beaches for rich assholes? or drill offshore and balance the budget... Posted by: Romeo13 at September 20, 2012 12:24 AM (lZBBB) The problem with California started 20 years ago. the defense industry, which was very Republicans folded or left. Then illegal aliens swarmed the state which totally changed the demographics. Long Beach used to be quite Republican, as used to be West L.A., yet today they are hard core leftist now. The GOP held the Assembly in the mid '90's, but quickly started collapsing so that by the end of the decade the Dems were in near total control. That control continued to metathesize with more and more poor hipsanics who were used to nothing but leftism began voting, and the sane people started to leave.

660 Had fun dealing with the Ron Paul cultists tonight. They took over the Clark County Nevada GOP (Clark County is the home to Las Vegas and 60% of GOP voters in the state). The Ron Paul people took over in part by abusing parliamentary tactics, demanding re-votes and divisions of the house over every single parliamentary point they could make, no matter how meaningless. Tonight, the non-Ron Paul people used the same tactics, and the Ron Paul people responded with whining about how we can't get along and how we were interrupting their little meeting. Of course, this was in large part due to the call to meeting, announcement of special board elections, &c. NOT being sent out at least 10 days ahead of time, which resulted in Ron Paul people running unopposed in large part because they made it difficult for people to self-nominate... to the point of not even telling them how. *Sigh*... it is the Ron Paul people and the fact that no one else trusts them that has lead to the Dems increasing their voter registration lead massivly in the county. The fact that Norther Nevada is run by sane GOPers is the only reason why Heller isn't toast. The Clark County GOP chair, BTW, was caught on Facebook saying that she's vote for Obama after Ron Paul lost.

701 I read before (probably at Cracked) that grog was created because men on a ship were entitled to a daily ration of rum, but it became a popular practice for a sailor to save his rum rations all week, then drink them all at once. Officers didn't like this, so they started watering down the rum. Now, if you didn't drink it right away, it wouldn't keep, so it was wasted.

I suspect there was a different reason for it, though. They had to carry water on board, because there was no way to purify seawater back then. It'd sit in barrels, and get all musty and stale and gross, not to mention having all sorts of interesting microscopic critters living in it. Adding rum to it killed those critters, and covered up the swampy taste it probably had. That's my theory.

Political Hat @ 733:

I assume everyone has heard about how the U.S. has dropped to 18th most economically free country?

Yep. I believe it was Clinton, back in the day, when the slobbering media was questioning him on the weighty issues of the day, like his choice of underwear, (boxers or briefs Mr. President????), that one of their number committed a serious breach by asking him about the state of the country. He responded that we had too many freedoms in this country, the freest country on earth, and we could do with a few.....restrictions.

I'm assuming he's happier than a pig in shit with the direction Obama is steering the U.S.

721 I had a great Talk Like a Pirate Day with me mates at the clinic. First time for some of them and they loved it.

I have worked in bar bands with some huge egos who spend every rehearsal telling the rest of the guys they are hacks and losers  and how he should be in L. A. making the big bucks yada, yada. When they finally quit, you don't miss them even if it kills the band. I'll bet Michael Anthony can smile today because he doesn't have to listen to some idiot's shit or want to kill someone very day and night at work.

Good mornin', 'rons!

723 Good morning, rons & ettes!

I showed my husband that photo of John Wayne and he couldn't figure it out.  I scrolled up so he could only see the body, not the face, and he immediately did his best Duke impression:  "Well, howdy, partner."  Thought that was funny.  We give more away by kinetics than we realize.

New caption for picture of Jim Messina: Lotion. Basket.

These twitter fads are hilarious. The more the Dumbs think they are being clever and hip, the more they expose themselves as being foolish and inconsequential.

I think they are desperate for some kind of empty chair day.

I told my repairman when he had to replace the computer  board in my new so-called dishwasher that I wish I had kept the old one and had it fixed. "You wouldn't believe how many people say that."

I'm keeping my precious old washer and dryer until I die and then leaving it to the kids!

Popular Mechanics needs to do an article called "How the Government Ruined our Major Appliances."

<b>Q:</b>  Why aren't there any Muslim characters on <i>Star Trek</i>?

<b>A:</b>  Because it's set in the future.

729 I remember Manimal. I liked Manimal. I was angry it was canceled. Several new shows of that season I liked got cancelled along with Manimal, though not as soon - Automan, Lottery, Finders of Lost Loves. Other people have no taste.
RIP Simon MacCorkindale.

Dead thread I know...

it's a 50 year old classic. If you haven't seen it yet, that's on you, not them. This is akin to people bitching about other ruining the Lord Of The Rings ending of the movies
That being said, not one of my favorite Hitchcock films

I think it's common for some people not to have seen every 50 year old classic ever made.  So it ain't on me.
