A lot of signs informing me that just because a girl dresses like a bit of trollop doesn't give me the right to rape her.

This is an odd bit of provocation: They're announcing something that's obviously true, and which I agree with. But they're shouting it a me and behaving as if this is a live debate, and we (collectively) disagree with them.

Who disagrees with this? Well, rapists, yes, I suppose. But murderers also disagree with hypothetical signs that might say "My Insurance Policy and/or Blackmail Plot Against You Does Not Give You The Right To Murder Me." This doesn't really make it a "political" issue, though.

Was "Columbo" a political show? I never got that vibe.

So, here are the pictures, and as usual, it's... well, it's like closing time at the bar, when the lights come up. There's some material here to work with, if you're really determined.

I love all the dudes showing up at these. "Solidarity." Uh-huh.

I don't know. There's a level of emotional and physical exhibition going on here that seems part of the I'M A SUPERSTAR syndrome plaguing us.

It's a deflecting tactic. See also: Duke rape case. Various other false allegations of rape.

If they can make you defensive about the "she was asking for it" cases, it makes it that much harder for you to be vociferously against the false allegation cases (which IIRC, outnumber the others considerably).

Given that they view men as The Oppressor and want to "overthrow the patriarchy" this makes sense. To them, if we point out "you know, you're at least a little less likely to get raped if you don't do things like dressing like a hooker while getting smashed at a bar on the bad side of town," that blunts their ability to cry "Rape!" without consequence.

Which is really sad, since it comes at the cost of people who have really suffered rape. Ever false allegation of rape is time spent on a lie that should have been spent on catching a real rapist.

Here's the thing about that: sadly, there was a time when she was asking for it was an actual defense to rape. That time was nearly 100 years or more ago, unless you're talking about certain portions of the world where that time was milliseconds ago. But those women do not live in that world. What those attention whores are demanding is that they can dress and act however they want and don't you dare judge them or call them names or in any other way indicate anything less than full throated supported for whatever they want to do. I would say it's childish but 3 year olds have more dignity than that.

It's like they can't distinguish between practical advice that reflects unfortunate realities and statements of how things ought to be (good ol' positive vs. normative).
