I'd like to think that the State has realized that  they will lose this trial and have started to work to establish Z's innocence, so as to avoid riots upon acquittal.

But I doubt it.

I'm waiting for the Mandela funeral and the inevitable "It's all about me!" speech by Obama. * Egypt Protestors Want Morsi To Step Down --- Good luck with that, unless the army is willing to go along with you. * 19 Firefighters Die In Arizona Wildfire --- I need to read up on this later to find out what happened and why. If this happened because of greenie "no proper wilderness management" bullshit, I'm going to be pissed. * The Left Rushes To Blames The Firefighters' Deaths On Global Warming --- Eat the fattest part of my ass you fucking hacks. * Police Terrorize College Girl Because They Thought She Bought Alcohol --- Heard about this a couple of days ago. I think this article should be renamed "The Virginia Alcohol / Beverage Control agency obviously has too much time on its hands." * Charges Dropped Against West Virginia Middle School Student Who Wore NRA T-Shirt --- What took so long? And how much will this kid win in civil suits against the school and cops over it? * Gay Marriage Fight Now Becomes A Religious Liberty Fight --- No shit. Someone go find the bridge Gabe is under to let him know. * Everyone Fails Upwards In DC --- The Peter Principle at work... I guess the question is "What will Obama be next since he's an incompetent failure at being president?"

13 My USDA rabbit license requirement has taken another ridiculous twist. I just received an 8 page letter from the USDA, telling me that by July 29 I need to have in place a written disaster plan, detailing all the steps I would take to help get my rabbit through a disaster, such as a tornado, fire, flood, etc. They not only want to know how I will protect my rabbit during a disaster, but also what I will do after the disaster, to make sure my rabbit gets cared for properly. I am not kidding–before the end of July I need to have this written rabbit disaster plan in place, or I am breaking the law.

In his email message, Hahne also explained the timeline via which he must comply: 1) the new regulation became effective Jan. 30, 2012; 2) the written plan must be completed by July 29, 2013; 3) Hahne and his wife, Brenda, must be trained to implement the plan as written; and 4) the written plan must be available for review by USDA inspectors by Sept. 28, 2013.

25 How badly injured do you have to be before you can fight back?
Well, it's the Christian thing to do, turn the other check and all that, tolerance and forgiveness you see? But Christians are evil people who want to deny non believers their rights and stuff, which is different than what the followers of the Prophet Mohammed want to do because . . uh well it's different

So, ya, Christians are supposed to be forgiving. And liberals would be able to negotiate a solution agreeable to everyone except in those cases where the police have to intervene. Those cases it should be up to the courts to decide what is just, and fair and stuff.

So the best thing to do is just don't go to those places where you might get into a fight, unless you need to buy drugs, and then there is a protocol to follow.

Just in time for the Fourth of July, a new hike in the California gas tax is kicking in Monday.

Prices are going up 3.5 cents. California drivers were already paying 36 cents a gallon in state taxes, but the hike means drivers will pay 39.5 cents. Including the other local, state and federal taxes, California drivers will be paying 72 cents in taxes on each gallon alone.

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2010 signed a fuel tax swap law, which makes certain state gas tax revenues remain the same annually. Since gas consumption has been down over the last couple of years, according to lawmakers, the excise tax has to go up to offset the decrease.

59 Remember that Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian all have their roots in Latin. At some point, those were all different dialects based largely on geography and culture.
===========
(and Romanian--it's a Romance Language too.)

I would argue that such was only possible because there was general illiteracy. That is, they couldn't see or read the correct spelling and went with how it sounds.

I'm probably wrong. Though I do recall on of my Latin professors saying a lot of the difference between Portuguese and Spanish was the swapping of and pronunciation of vowels.

Another interesting note or two: The British of the 1700's would have sounded more like people from Boston, not like they do today.* Also, I recall there is a recording of King Edward (I think) where he is dropping his g's. Something like "Mornin' Going huntin' today?"

*Which, if you've seen it, the renditions of Shakespear in the accurate dialect of the time actually makes it more understandable and it rhymes a lot better.

73 Why I am still not quite for gay marriage, and why I consider Anthony Kennedy an enemy of popular sovereignty and constitutional republicanism: *If* the argument for "marriage equality" is so obvious, so able to eviscerate the arguments of opponents, then advocates should be able to point me to the "Second Treatises on Government", the "Federalist Papers", the "Common Sense" pamphlets on the issue. Where are they? I do not say they cannot be written. I do say I don't believe they have. And as to the extent that advocates have relied on brute force conquest (via courts) vice conquest via arguments made to a democratically-enabled people, the movement is illegitimate. Gay marriage is not about "equality", as if it was obvious that something someone had a right to was being denied. Nonsense. That would be the case if a woman and man were being denied the right to marry because, of say, race (slaves could not officially marry in the antebellum period). It is about expanding ways of thinking so as to expand the idea of what something could be. Of making marriage being about the idea of souls linked than man and women linked. (ignoring for the moment marriage is a linkage in part designed for purely utilitarian, non-romantic purposes). What advocates are doing is focusing on getting the results desired via the path of least political resistance, but are doing violence to many concepts along the way. Not the least of which is that processes happen in a republic by letting the people devide, and that things must be done by having "a decent respect for the opinions of mankind." Justice Kennedy may strongly believe as he does, but I don't think he could actually put together a pamphlet on the reasons why that didn't rely on emotional arguments ("humiliation"), or that was overly long. And the reason why that is bad is that if you are going to rule society as a philosopher-king, you need to be as much the first as the second.

84 These were the idiots who spread the meme that their kid was laying in the morgue unidentified for 3 days. Truth: One hour after the father reported him missing to the police, the police went to him with a photo and had the kid ID's. The autopsy was completed that day or the next and then the body was released to the family and the undertaker, who they claimed was a coroner/medical examiner, picked the body up and took it back to Miami.

95 Honestly, even if she had a case of Jack Daniel's, what's with the full-on "Tactical Strike Force, swarm, swarm, swarm!!," approach? Exactly. 1) They didn't know she had alcohol (they couldn't, since she didn't). 2) They didn't know she was under-age. So they assumed both of those things to be true. But I want to get back to the point: "how do you mistake bottled water for an alcoholic beverage?" And the answer is: you don't. I'm guessing the plain-clothes officers knew (or suspected) that college kids like to buy beer from that store. Possibly because the store didn't card like it was supposed to. So they hung out at the store on party night to see what would happen. When this girl and her friends came in, they heard the girls talking about "this is going to be a great party!" or something, and assumed what she'd be buying was beer. Because of that assumption, they paid no attention to what she actually bought, and only to whether or not she was carded. When she wasn't (because she wasn't buying beer), they assumed. Now, even that doesn't explain the "swarm, swarm, swarm!" thing. What *would* explain that is if this was a "trouble" store that did this frequently. One employee failing to card one student isn't enough to get the license yanked (probably), but if you terrorize the student into saying, "yeah, we all come here for our beer because they never card us!" well, then you've got more options to deal with the store itself.

109 Re: Where are the boys?
For those of you who are parents of young boys, or have young grandchildren, I would recommend seeking, buying, and gifting to the kids, books in the American tradition that were printed prior to 1960 or so. Otherwise, the boys are just not going to be exposed to traditional knowledge.

In particular, I would recommend any of the 'The Childhood of Famous Americans Series' published by Bobbs-Merrill. Those are suitable for any child who can read, up through age 10 or 12.
Here is a list of titles : http://www.gunjones.com/childhood.html

Where to find them is another matter. I generally buy used books off of Ebay, or via Bookfinder.com  Some are available in reprint.

Very high on my list of books for nephews and etc. are the TWO volumes of Popular Mechanics "The Boy Mechanic" . Those are chock-full of little projects that used to be the 'stuff' that boys did. I believe that those may be available in re-print pretty cheaply. I am NOT sure that they are 100% of the originals. Original hardbacks are a little pricey, but may be found via Bookfinder.com

Our gifting them billions in defense kit is not really a lack of influence so much as a self-defeating one.

The rule of "good/same/worse" says we have F-16s and other kit to people who may be more crazy the next try at a functioning National Government.

I'm starting to evolve past any belief in fostering anyone in "nation building" at this point.  I can't see why I am bothered by "Egypt" the nation next to Israel and near Libya being as rendered or breaking into smaller nations, or being an anarchial hellhole of city states.  What is bothering me is that we are arming sets of ever zanier thugs to be better armed thugs.

As for the "where are the boys" question, you can find a lot of them at my son's private school (grades 2-12). It specializes in non-traditional teaching methods for intelligent kids who just don't excel in public schools. The elementary school is over 90% boys.

The best part is that they let boys be boys. At a recent poetry reading for my son's 4th grade class, he and his fellow classmates read their poems about archery, building rockets, crime scene investigation, and more. And no one freaked out - imagine that!

Information such as if you are ever approached by someone who claims to be a cop but who is not wearing a uniform and who has some weird badge, you should refuse to stop for them, if you are in your car then you should leave, you should call 911 and you should drive to the police station. Best spot in Gettysburg to me is the view from Little Round Top near sunset.  In summer while the Visitor Center closes  at 6 pm, the park itself stays  open to 10 pm.

Be out before  10 pm though, gates to the park close elctronically at 10 and you'll be spending the night with the battlefield ghosts.

152 As far as "legitimate purpose" of a nation in trying to say both "marriage" and "no homosexual marriage"--there is a reason why it has been done over the eons: Numbers matter. The propagation forward matters. You having a Hallmark Channel romance does not. That is what affairs are for. Now, this is not probably an argument I would make in this day and age, for I think we can get by without it, but for the record, and Guardian Kennedy's amusement, "numbers matter" is the *exact* argument being made for amnesty. The exact argment. Therefore, there is a legitimate purpose if Congress so chooses, and always will be, even if we no longer wish to acknowledge it, or World Controller Kennedy tries to deny it. The very blnt fact is that If society ever has some great decimation (new sense of the term), then I assure you that which Mr. Kennedy thinks has no legitimate and can never have any legitimate purpose will very quickly be the requirement of all, whether they care to or not, whether legal obligation or social, for the exact reason as in times past. The survival of the community depends upon numbers.

156 Yeah,  I think the ABC agents failed the reasonable suspicion test,  which is a reasonable person standard.    A hunch that a beverage carton might be beer because the girl is young and in a grocery store near the campus,  but where there are many non-alcoholic beverages sold in cartons,  is not a justification to detain, question or search.   And obviously the observing officers could not have determined that she made an alcohol purchase,  because she did not.  (It was also a very reasonable possibility that she was 21, and the officers know that the Harris Teeter demands identification and proof of age for alcoholic purchases. )

They tried to stop her on a hunch and to ascertain what she had purchased.

Of course,  even if it had been beer,  they did not act appropriately.  The nolle prosequi motion  makes it very plain  officers were not only aware that they had panicked the girls,  but that the driver was on the line with 911 before she left the scene.  Her night in jail and the charges were to cover error and prevent a lawsuit.

The prosecutor has carefully framed the officers reasons to approach to  seem like reasonable suspicion,  "it appeared"  she had purchased beer.  However,  there was never anything but ambiguity.    If the girls were supposed to clearly see and identify the badges of the officers in the dark lot,  I trust the officers are held to the same standards of night vision when identifying purchases of alcohol,  when non-alcoholic drinks are sold in similar packaging.

In my day a Virginian 18 or older could purchase and consume beer.  As elsewhere the federal threat of  of withheld highway funds was the impetus for raising the drinking age for all alcoholic drinks to 21,  but it was sold to Virginians as a means of preventing 18 high school students for buying beer for their younger high-school friends.   That was what raising the drinking age was really about,  even with regard to highway funds.  There had been a tacit understanding that the inevitable "older buys for younger" would now be something happening among older college students and that enforcement of moderate consumption without attachment to other breaches of the peace (DUI,  public drunkeness,  loud nuisance parties) was no priority at all.  Memory is short and that tacit understanding is lost in attempts to justify budgets and manpower.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Eager to secure more visas for skilled foreign workers, tech companies have stepped up their lobbying this week in support of a comprehensive U.S. immigration reform bill.

Human resources executives from Adobe , Broadcom , Intel , Motorola Solutions and other corporations met with dozens of lawmakers and senior advisers on Wednesday from the congressional committees in charge of immigration laws.

They also spoke to a wide array of Democratic and Republican senators including some on-the-fence Republicans, such as Mark Kirk of Illinois and Rob Portman of Ohio

Gay couple may be 1st to win green-card petition

A Bulgarian graduate student and his American husband are the first gay couple in the nation to have their green card petition approved after the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriages, their lawyer says.

Finally -- smashing  gay stereotypes. On the other hand....

"...the couple wanted to stay in Fort Lauderdale, where they live with their two Yorkshire terriers."

The only thing that hasn't been dragged into this yet are aliens from another planet,  and I am not sure he isn't doing something about that as well.

I KNOW they sit around in the White House and laugh about how they are sticking it to us.  Looking at the juvenile tweets of Axelrod and Plouffe,  all you see are people who want to score points because they have nothing else in their lives.

And the fake kidnapping seems like a juvenile scheme that they thought would be really cool,  especially in October.   The Obama could pose as a statesman.

I hope a baboon bites him in Tanzania.

I do believe Sir Paul McCarthy put it best: "Somebody said to me, 'But the Beatles were anti-materialistic.' That's a huge myth. A Republican Case for Immigration Reform

by Jeb Bush

....Republicans have much in common with immigrants—beliefs in hard work, enterprise, family, education, patriotism and faith. But for their voice to penetrate the gateway, Republicans need to cease being the obstacle to immigration reform and instead point the way toward the solution.

239 I used Google image search to see if there were any similar beer packaging.
(I don't like beer and don't pay all that much attention to it, so I supposed a similar box might be possible)

This is as close as it gets, with these brands.  And they are not close.

241 Real reason she was let go and no
charges note two other wittnesses in car with her.

Ding ding ding. We have an analysis winner here.

If the girl had been alone when the ABC unit jumped her she would still be in jail charged with resisting arrest, assault of a peace officer with a deadly weapon (because her car brushed one) and 5 counts of attempted murder of a peace officer - since she missed the rest of them. Why? When the police screw up they escalate the charges to cover their asses; the extra arm flapping action and noise helps conceal the original screw up.

And oh yes, had she been alone, we would never have heard about any of this.

242 Why did this require some massive sting operation? A college kid buying beer? Who'd have thunk?

They couldn't have intercepted her before she got to the car, identified themselves calmly, and asked to see what she'd bought?

I was wondering about that myself.  Are there hidden incentives here?  For example, do the police have the option to confiscate and sell your car at auction if you're illegally transporting illegally acquired alcohol?

Another possibility is that the numbers look better if they're stopping people in vehicles rather than on foot.  Do those numbers get tallied in a sexier category?

There has to be a reason, even if it's just adrenaline.

243 Or, as someone said last week: "Don't Engage!!!!"

Yes, all confrontations could be avoided if good people simply did nothing. I recall something *else* that happens when good people do nothing, however.

That was my response to troyriser who was making that point implicitly.  I pointed out (in a rude way, I admit) that his argument was exactly the same as arguing non-engagement.  Zimmerman had no reasonable expectation that getting out of his truck to check the house number would result in a life-or-death situation.  Yet, so many people call him a "wanna-be cop" and overly-aggressive for getting out of his vehicle.

Some even seem to argue he shouldn't have noticed Martin walking across lawns out of the light on a rainy night at all.  Apparently doing so was racist in and of itself.

Posted by: bonhomme at July 01, 2013 08:56 AM (8ifMA)

244 There was no reasonable basis for suspicion to justify stopping her in the first place.   They should not be attempting to ascertain what a customer has purchased in the parking lot,  just in case - based on a hunch that young people near UVA prefer beer to any other beverage,  when young people emerge from a store that sells many different types of non-alcoholic beverage in 12 packs.

They should see actual beer at the very least,  not just something that "appears to be" (or rather, might be) beer.

There must be some sort of quota or bounty - a feeling they need to net themselves a scofflaw to justify their existence.    Trolling grocery stores for college- aged  people making moderate purchases of beer or hard cider seems a rather poor use of ABC agents,  as ABC's primary purpose in enforcement of vendors,  not customers.   They get guns to deal with moonshiners and violent drunkards,  not sorority sisters armed with cookies and giggles.

245 Aside from the attempt to stop without enough justification,   it really bothers me that at least two agents on the scene  were fully aware that the driver was attempting to communicate with a 911 dispatcher   ON THE SCENE,  a fact made very very clear in the nolle prosequi motion.
