20 Years Ago Today, Ryan vs. Ventura
— Dave in Texas

Classic.

At the Ballpark in Arlington, there's a statue of Nolan Ryan at the outfield entrance. He's got his hat in his hand, and is standing there like he's appreciating the crowd cheering him after his 7th no hitter.

I always thought this would have been a better statue.

Nolan (440x399).jpg

Hold still sweetie, I'm makin history here

Kinda felt bad for Ventura after this, by most accounts he's a pretty decent guy. Still this was epic.

Also, anybody who took on Bo Jackson in this mess wasn't thinkin so good. What a horse he was.

20 years ago today. No cryin in baseball.

1 Ah, baseball. Anyone else hoping for a lifetime ban for A-Rod? I hate feeling that way, but good grief, he is such a PRICK.

2 I remember the Nolan Ryan episode too.  He wasn't defending himself, he jumped Ventura when Ventura went out to fuss at him for a bean ball.
Was the first time I realized what an asshole Ryan was.  Still is, as far as I know. I hear him endorsing stuff on the radio.  He'll endorse eating shit if you pay him for it, I suspect.

ventura was a batter, he belongs in the box or the base paths. not on the mound or even the infield grass. walk towards the mound and your just asking for an ass whuppin.

18 Baseball.  Zzzzzz.

I think my disinterest stems from not having a major league team here and  also from the excrutiating hours I spent sitting in the heat watching son and grandson play.  (They didn't like it either.  My favorite memory wa my son disappearing from right field.  He had snuck under the back hedge and was at the refreshment stand getting a coke.  He was 9.  LOL!  He got in trouble,  but that should tell you his level of interest.)

Ryan was / is competitive.  You don't become the best in the world by being a wuss.  I watched him pitch in Houston for many years, sitting up in the Gold Level seats in the AstroDome, back when they were first come, first seated.  I would sit directly behind home plate.  I have seen a lot of pitchers over the years, but I have never seen a ball "explode" like Ryan's did.  From people I have talked to that hit against him, you didn't see it, you heard it as it went by and hoped it wasn't in the direction of your head.  And yes, he bested Ventura twice that day.

Regarding Bo, perhaps the least remembered over all best athelete that the United States ever produced.  What he could have done if he hadn't been damaged goods all thouse years.

21 Ventura was a great player for the Sox and the Mets. He's a pretty decent manager with the Sox now. The way I see it the whupping wasn't that bad. Rodriguez pinned back Ventura's arms. I'm pretty sure Ryan is a fellow Hordesman.

25 Ventura charged the mound, he took his chances and lost.  The fight started a couple of feet from the pitcher's mound, I like Ventura but if he didn't want to risk getting his ass kicked he should have walked to 1B.

Posted by: Kaisersoze at August 04, 2013 12:24 PM (mUY87)

26 A little background to this fight

A few years earlier, Nolie was charged on the mound by Dave Winfield and got knocked down pretty good. Nolie said that he screwed up by backing away when Winfield charged and that would never happen again

Ryan could have made the excuse that Winfield was so big that he blotted out the sun, but he didn't

When Ventura charged the mound, Ryan was ready for him and definitely didn't back up

Posted by: kbdabear at August 04, 2013 12:25 PM (/9IC1)

27 At one point, the Mets had Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Tug McGraw and Jerry Koosman on the squad at the same time. They traded Ryan for some scrub I don't remember because he was "wild." That was one of the worst trades of all time for that club. And then when they traded Seaver in '77, I'll always remember the Rigby cartoon in the NY Post, aimed at M. Donald Grant, the Mets' GM; it pictured Shea Stadium as a haunted house with the caption "Grant's Tomb." Oh my Mets. Like my youth, my interest in them and baseball in general is long gone.

The 93 Sox should've won the WS...great pitching staff and some guys who could mash, starting with Frank Thomas.  I saw them clinch against the same Rangers.

Baseball needs to do something about the dominance of pitchers...I saw a graphic that we're on par for the most strikeouts in a season.  Maybe extend the pitching mound out a few inches.

55 I remember watching an Indians game where the pitcher went head hunting at Albert Belle.   Needless to say, he took a wee bit of umbrage at this and charged the mount.   I forget who was pitching but it was a pitcher v. Albert Belle.   I think it was Tom Hamilton who noted that there are easier ways to commit suicide.

Then there was the time Belle was running the bases and the second baseman came running out to tag him and Belle laid him out with a forearm.   Completely and totally legal, he was in the base path but it was kind of hilarious.   It was like watching someone run into a brick wall.

62 Good afternoon Horde. I remember watching this on tv when it happened. My younger brothers were big Nolan Ryan fans back then. They always thought he was awesome for an "old" man. LOL! By the way, when I was an undergrad at UCLA, I had the "pleasure" of having both of Brian Bosworth's nephews in one of my discussion sections. Anywho, we got to talking about football and they started talking about the sheer awesomeness of their uncle. So...me being me, I asked them if they had seen footage of their uncle get run over by Bo Jackson on Monday Night Football. They said they hadn't and that that isn't what happened. That night, I emailed everyone in our discussion section the clip. Yea...they stopped speaking to me after that.

80 I've read that the reason that catchers wear the equipment is just in case the batter attacks them with it. A lot of trash talk goes on at the plate. AJ Pierzynski is considered by far the most obnoxious

SF Giants outfielder Jeff "Penitentiary Face" Leonard cut of the chatter by writing "Fuck You" on the barrel of the bat and waving it in front of the catcher's face

Mike Piazza loved to drive Chipper Jones nuts by calling him by his actual first name of "Larry". Jones would snap "Chipper!" and Piazza would reply "I refuse to call a grown man 'Chipper."

About the only joy I got watching the Braves routinely maul my Muts during the Chipper days was hearing the fans serenade Chipper with chants of "Larrrrrry". Funny as hell. Of course it didn't seem to bother Chipper all that much. He loved hitting homers against the Mets so much he named his son Shea.

92 By the way, when I was an undergrad at UCLA, I had the "pleasure" of having both of Brian Bosworth's nephews in one of my discussion sections.

I think Bo actually hit a home run that same week.  One of his mammoth shots.  Or maybe I'm just making that up.  Superman will do that to you.

Tom Glavine gets special hate from me not so much for his Braves tenure, but for his time with the Mets. He pitched so badly in that last game of 2007 that I swear he sucked so he'd get pulled in the 1st inning to catch his flight home to Atlanta

101 Nolie used to hit the weight room and do a workout after he pitched. I saw his weight training program one time, and it made no sense to anyone who knew anything about weightlifting. Something like, ball weighs 8 ounces, and I'm going to throw it 100 times, so that's the same as 50 pounds 1 time, or 10 pounds 5 times, so I'll do 3 sets of 5 reps of 10 pounds on every exercise. That's not it, but the logic was something like that. But it sure worked for him, and kept him going for a lot of years. And if you look at him next to Ventura, no question who had the muscle mass.

Not sure this has anything to do with it officially, but Eid (end of Ramadan feast) is next Tuesday (assuming the new moon can be seen), so no work is going to get done anywhere in the Middle East next week anyway. It's kind of like Thanksgiving week is for us, or the week between Christmas and New Year's. I suspect everyone who can is taking the week off back in the States because they know they won't get anything done anyway. So this just kind of makes the vacation people are already taking a little more officially sanctioned, and gives the skeleton staff an excuse not to open up the embassies and consulates (and the local nationals the week off, which most government and private employers will give too)..

116 Greatest fight in NBA History? How about this one: Most basketball people will tell you that the single greatest basketball fight was "the night Willis Reed cleared out the whole Laker team." The Knicks have a film of the affray that has probably had more runs than King Kong. It was Oct. 18, 1966, the Knicks' home opener at the old Madison Square Garden. Reed, 6'8", 235, then in his third year, had been exchanging elbows all night with Rudy LaRusso. After a third-quarter free throw. Reed tripped LaRusso, who tagged Reed with a right while Darrall Imhoff held Willis from behind. That sent Reed into a frenzy. He slugged Imhoff and chased LaRusso to the bench. Then he hit John Block with an enormous left hook, spreading his nose all over his face, turned and again belted Imhoff, who fell and knocked five Lakers off the bench like dominoes. Reed planted two more shots on LaRusso and one more on Imhoff, who, bleeding from above the left eye, dived under the bench, to find Block already hiding there with a broken nose. Recently, Reed chuckled about the incident. "They said I should be banned. All I got was an ejection and a small fine, nothing like what they give out now. You know what would happen if someone did all that today?" Would a full $10,000 be a good guess?

When I was a college freshman I had a friend that looked remarkably like Bosworth, hair style, build, face.

TFG would go around at parties saying he was Bosworth's little brother. If the line at the keg was too long, he'd walk up to people and take their cups out of their hands and thank them for getting him a beer.

Drunk chicks all over him. He worked it to death actually. A few bars didn't card him because he had everyone believing he was The Boz's kid brother.

Then he got kicked out of school and joined the Army

So. Picture this....NYC, South Bronx. 14 year old is capped by the cops after he shot at a fleeing man, and then refused to drop his weapon when ordered to by the cops. So far, kind of a normal day in many big cities in this country. But this kid, this precious Trayvonesque angel, was arrested in May for attempted murder of a 15 year old. He also was scheduled to appear in court on the 23rd for charges of weapon possession.

136 Ryan was part of the Mets farm system in the late 60's - was taught to use his legs to generate momentum towards the plate (if you look at pics of him, Koosman, Seaver and Gentry look at the leg used to push them off the rubber and towards the plate - it usually had a area covered with dirt). I don't remember Ryan going on the DL for Arm problems (he had a problem with blisters early with the Mets, and was usually on the DL for Hammy problems). Use to go to 'The Big A" as a kid... when The Express was pitching you could hear him grunt up in the stands when he was on the mound. Remember the day when he left the Angels for the Astros, he took out an ad in the OC Register thanking the fans for their support... he really wanted to win a WS for Gene Autry while with the team. As far as interestin' pitchers go, Randy Johnson whacking that pigeon is still one of my favorites. the explosive poof of pigeon feathers was just too damned funny.

160 nreal: Government To Spend 2 Billion Buying Land And Giving It Back To Indian Tribes Meanwhile we are told we are having to gut military to its lowest levels since World War 2, and the Administration is touting the horrors of a sequestration that they themselves created. Are those concerned happy with this arrangement? No, they already see the huge boondoggle coming and are fighting over their piece of the pie. Not to mention those who will be forced off their land and made to sell. Weasel Zippers: Not sure we can last another 3 years with these commie yuts in power

161 What pisses me off is that ARod is an incredible talent. He would have been a lock for the Hall of Fame even without steroids (just like Bonds). Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at August 04, 2013 05:58 PM (gqgiP) Who knows, word is now A-Rod has been using since High School

163 Yeah, the Feds' with our money are going to buy and gift land to a bunch of indian tribes and then they'll promptly open some more freaking casinos on them.  Good grief.

Nope. He was armed. The race-baiters know better than to have their victim armed.

And now he's dead. Pity, and all that, his parents must be horribly grieved, (assuming they've even noticed he's missing yet). But...if the justice system worked, especially the juvenile system, this thugish little punk would have been kept locked up, and would still be alive. Thanks to PC 'OMGWTFBBQ we cant put innocent little babies in jail!' laws, he was punted right back into the same environment, the same neighborhood, and the same situation that he came from. Golf clap to the city of NY....brilliant f'ing thinking right there. At least the precocious toddler didn't die with a Big Gulp in his hands.

165 there is a mural of that photo in the Lonestar Oyster Bar across 157 from the stadium.... at least the last time i was in there, several years ago.

166 Did Nolan actually punch himself with that first upper-cut?

Posted by: Just Curious at August 04, 2013 02:24 PM (Y724e)

167 Pete is fucking liar, Ventura rushed Ryan and tried to tackle him, Ryan, bulldogged him and commenced to massaging his face with his fist.

Pathetic, nolan ryan the asshole, we all know how he took all those enhancement drugs, had 5 wives, snorted coke til his heart exploded, beat his wife and kids, murdered some guy at a bar badmouthing him, fought dogs for sport, and generally pissed on all elderly every chance he got....

Oh he didnt, it just some asshole named pete  spouting off on the interwebs again. classy.

Wonder which contributor to JEF bought up land close to a reservation and is now selling it for 10x return?

170 It does kind of suck for Ventura. He could save a bus load of crippled kids from falling off a cliff and he would still be known as the guy who got his ass kicked by Nolan Ryan.

171 Ventura in '03 0r '04 gave an interview with gary mayer and roe khan.

He said, "I didn't know it would be history, but as soon as I took that first stem I knew I made a mistke."

Venture knew he was meat as soon as he stepped to ryan.

172 Posted by: Nevergiveup at August 04, 2013 05:25 PM (jE38p) I still think that the best NBA fight was a non-fight: Showtime Lakers and some team I can't remember. Some no-names were going at it and a member of the other team ran up on Magic and pushed him in the chest. Magic wasn't willing to fight and put his hands up to indicate this, but before the other guy could push him again, Kareem ran up behind Magic, put Magic behind him as if the latter weighed 120 pounds and put his face down into the other players face. The other player then put his hands up and backed off. No one wanted to f with Kareem.

173 Nolan Ryan was born on Wild Bills birthday, and trained throwing midsized farm animals on his way to perochial school, only to laugh at the swats and abuse meeted out by the angryh latent lesbian nuns.

Summary, I would only punch Nolan if I were on my death bead, and in which case my doctor better be 100% correct.

Saw square-guitar Bo at a local dive 20 years ago.  A dozen people attended.  Max.  Bo was not amused.

Football / Baseball / Bobsled Bo just finished a Tour de Alabama cycling for the tornado victims in Tuscaloosa.  Pure class.

Bo knows Bo!

175 The most overrated "fight" ever. Ventura didn't have one mark on him afterwards. Ryan basically noogied him. Yeah, it was funny and it made a great picture.

176 That didn't happen at the Ballpark in Arlington. It wasn't built yet. Nolan never pitched at the new stadium. That happened at the old park. Just saying. Also, I'll love Ace Ventura till the day I die for his walkoff grandslam single

179 I love how the play-by-play guys say, "Let's take another look at it" and then go on to dissect it in all its glory.

Nowadays they won't show replays of even potentially controversial plays, not wanting to rile up the rubes and all, let alone fights.  Nowadays they'd just cut to commercial and if it wasn't resolved by then they'd put the camera on the play-by-play guys who will hand-wring until play resumes.

There may still be no cryin' in baseball, but it has taken some steps in that sissified direction.
