8 My nephew just finished his third tour in Afghanistan. He's a very fine Marine. Now he is doing desk duty in NC. He certainly has earned it. Best wishes to all the troops wherever they are.

23 Good friend of ours was in the sandbox for Thanksgiving and Christmas last year. Came home after some minor explosions, unhurt. So very thankful for the men in uniform. We did something nice for a struggling ex-soldier with PTSD and his family this week. Wish we could have done more.

Actually think it only qualifies as "political" in the usual fairly meaningless sense of that word these days, but comment #1 merits discussion in another thread if I can remember to do so. But to straddle the two themes, the nation really isn't worthy of these folks in the photo and their service (there, that's sneaky enough, I think).

31 My son and his buddies, in a firebase in southeastern Afghanistan along the Pakistani border, thought the Thanksgiving dinner, turkey with all of the fixings, was just plain awesome. He told me they were sick to death of MREs. I told him to be grateful C-rations were no longer around. When I was in the Army, there was a dessert in C-rations called a 'chocolate nut roll', made by an outfit called Aunt Beatrice's Kitchens. The chocolate tasted like chalk, and the dry, spongy 'nutroll' part would suck all of the moisture from your body. We swore one day we would hunt down and shoot Aunt Beatrice, whoever and wherever she was, the diabolical witch.

34 My daughters would call me and tell me how worried they were about their cousin being in Afghanistan. I told them that was okay, but remember he's a Marine, that means he's a badass, and he is over there with a whole bunch of other Marines. He'll be fine, the folks on the other side should be nervous, not you.

37 My boy spawn is in basic training to be a cavalry scout. He will be home for Christmas and then back to Benning for AIT portion of training. After that, who knows. I'm guessing he may wind up in Afghanistan eventually. I really hate that, but then I hate the fact that he is serving under the most America hating Marxist president this country has ever had the misfortune to suffer. And I hate that more than anything.

40 I find it sad how many are willing to show the veterans respect on a special holiday, but join with the demorats and Obama trashing them otherwise. Which is REAL RESPECT, everyday or set aside holidays ?
