— Ace At least 25 Iraqi security personnel killed in insurgent attacks aimed at liberating the terrorists.
Another prison, called Taji, was also attacked.
The prisons in Abu Ghraib and Taji house thousands of prisoners, including convicted al-Qaida militants. Exactly one year ago, al-Qaida’s Iraq arm launched a campaign called ‘‘Breaking the Walls’’ that made freeing its imprisoned members a top priority.A surge of violence across Iraq has killed more than 3,000 people since the start of April, and the assaults on the prisons laid bare the degree to which security has eroded in the country in recent months. The spike in bloodshed is intensifying fears of a return to the widespread sectarian killing that pushed the country to the brink of civil war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
Several officials, including lawmakers on parliamentÂ’s security and defense committee, said more than 500 inmates managed to escape from Abu Ghraib. There were no immediate reports of escapes from Taji.
Given the number of security forces killed, and mentions of gunfights lasting an hour, it seems that this is a bona fide jailbreak from the outside -- although, this being Iraq, you can bet there were confederates on the inside as well.
I don't understand why, in this sort of situation, the wardens just don't start immediately killing Al Qaeda prisoners.
Oh I know-- "But you're not supposed to." Well, you're not supposed to plot to bomb and shoot prison guards, either. So "Supposed To" is right out the window.

Because if the prison break is unsuccessful, the wardens find themselves up on charges of murder because the prisoners have rights or something (as evidenced by the fact they weren't summarily executed in the first place*)
If the prison break is successful, then the raiding forces that overwhelmed your guards are now pissed at you and you're their prisoner.

You should have read the expose that the local fishwrap, which up until a couple weeks ago was solidly in Braun's corner, put up over the weekend. Braun was pissed that, a few hours after he apparently popped a testosterone lozenge or two (the fast way to boost and thus pass through testosterone), he was selected to be tested.

Why aren't these people simply executed to begin with? Are they still being interrogated, or what?
This is the type of situation where the death penalty is suited perfectly. Politically important captives who are guilty of murder and capable of more murder, in a politically volatile and unstable location like Iraq.

I'm not sure what that's all about either. IIWM, I'd clean out Gitmo tomorrow and send a big, ol' message to the rest of those bastards.
And I'd be well within the Geneva Conventions, which allows for the execution of enemy combatants (i.e, those without uniforms).

When the evil Bush was still President there was a report that they had been trying for a long time to get some other countries to take what was left there but were unsuccessful The reason for that was that the moderately bad ones had all been released already to home countries. All that was left was the worst of the worst and nobody wanted them.
If it had been left up to me I would have had all of them marched out into the prison yard and I would have had them shot in accordance with the laws of civilized warfare. They have already had a "hearing" and that is enough to justify military executions.

I place 80% of the blame on the Dem/Media complex, which deliberately demoralized our citizens by its cross-eyed agit-prop, and 18% on the compromised/politicized CIA, which "assured" Pres. Too late to (another) dead Iraq thread, twice today. Just "for the drawer", as Soviet samizdat writers called it, to sum up the first thread:
* no, for the thousandth fucking time no, the US did not "arm" Iraq in the 1980s. Iraq was a filthy rich oil state in a blocking position to protect (at that time, in a real sense) other, even fucking filthier rich oil states, from Iran. They paid mostly cash. They actually had a pretty impressive cadre of educated technical and engineering types and were quite well organized (for an Arab state). They armed themselves, with their own $$$, Saudi/Kuwaiti/Gulfie $$$, and (well-rated) debt. They bought mostly Soviet-bloc arms (in design, if not origin). They bought some high-end specialty stuff from South Africa, Sweden, Italy. The USSR, China, Egypt, France, and others "armed Iraq". NOT the US. Our aid was almost entirely intel, provided late in the war, to forestall defeat in the southern/marshes/Basra campaigns. And the Kuwaiti tanker-reflagging - and related smash-mouth abuse of Iranian naval forces in the summer of 1987 - was to prevent Iranian horizontal escalation of the war against Iraqi allies/financiers/Gulfies. As for being an "ally" of Iraq, I recall very clearly the deputy chief of mission at our Baghdad embassy telling me in early 1988 that he was in the most hostile environment he'd ever seen, to include Sofia Bulgaria, in that era the coldest of the Cold War diplomatic environments behind the Iron Curtain.
* The 64 helos built for the Shah and then sold to Iraq (one of which sits at the Flying Leatherneck museum in San Diego, a bootleg Gulf War I trophy) made NO DIFFERENCE in 1991, notwithstanding Schwarzkopf's bizarre fixation on Iraqi helicopters. Iraq did not have an offensive doctrine, training, or experience in using helicopters as most imagine, and in any case Basra, Najaf, Karballah, and other southern rebellion centers were "pacified" via very low-tech methods (artillery, rounding up military-age males and shooting them in ditches - check out the front page of the NYT in June 2006 for a graphic illustration of this, as it was the "cleanest" evidence site found in connection with the Iraqi tribunal case from the 1991 repression).
* Leon Trotsky on a popsicle stick, WTF with the "we provoked the Sunnis" and "de-Ba'athification was a mistake" mythology? (let's toss in "disbanding the Iraqi Army" as it usually accompanies these silly misconceptions) Executive summary: nothing we did/didn't do in 2003/2004 had any impact on the Sunni decision to resist, save perhaps that we were TOO indulgent of their concerns, too fanatically devoted to assuring them they had a future instead of making them wonder about that and have a stake in behaving. You don't have to have spent several years there to understand this. Those in the comments who referred to tribal division and warring being fundamental features of Iraq were mostly right.
However, our "mismanagement" had nothing to do with provoking the Sunnis - on the contrary, the failure to come down on them like a billion tons of ripe dates starting in 2004 was the key mistake. Along with (1) ending the occupation far too soon, and (2) failing to acknowledge the war Iran was waging on us - actually, the dramatic escalation of the war they've waged since 1979 - and retaliate decisively. TF Black and McChrystal's stuff was all well and good, but no substitute for a major campaign of punishment of the Pasdaran and the Tehran regime, for which many options were available. (BTW, the perception that the US was in fact kicking Iranian ass would have helped both with the Sunnis, who are paranoid about Shi'ite allegiance to Tehran, and many Shi'a, who are hostile to Iran, to that regime's velayet-i-faqih governance, and who fought in their millions - enthusiastically against their co-religionists in the Iran-Iraq war.
* more than anything, my take-away from Iraq, personally and strategically, was/is that the US is now a fundamentally unserious country, and as such, a treacherous menace to its allies, its most motivated citizens, its fantastic heritage and influence on human history, and the principles fundamental to its creation. From the pathetic whining and lazy ignorance (abundantly illustrated on this morning's comment thread) of the "conservatives" to the despicable idiocy of the GOP "leadership" such as McConnell, to (of course) the loathsome and incomprehensible moral inversion and outrageously irresponsible behavior of most of the "press" and libs and Dems - it's doubtful any country in history ever betrayed its best citizens more damnably.
