A Case for Optimism?
— Ace

Well, I guess that's why he calls himself the Gay Patriot West.

I don't know... I'm linking this because I think optimism is a Good Thing and I'd sure like everyone to feel good (including myself) but....

...uhhh...

He will not longer be able to use that issue (i.e., “tax the rich) against Republicans as effectively as he did in the campaign.

Well sure, anytime you completely lose on an issue your opponent can't use it against you as much. (But note only "as much" -- he can still say "These Republicans, who argued for tax breaks for billionaires...")

DOCTOR: I've got some good news, and some bad news.

PATIENT: Let me have the bad news first.

DOCTOR: You're going to be dead in three days.

PATIENT: Dead in three days? What's the good news?

DOCTOR: I'm banging your wife.

PATIENT: You're having an affair with my wife?

DOCTOR: Banging. I wouldn't dignify it as "an affair."

PATIENT: Well then you're banging my wife! How is the hell is that remotely good news?!

DOCTOR: You've got bigger things to worry about. How I envy you your perspective.

PATIENT: ...

DOCTOR: Anal, too.

10 let's take a page from the left's playbook and start using the phrase "lame duck president" like they did in jan 2004. Also, let's use the phrase "The Most Vile, Undead, Fly Master, Lord of the Unclean" to describe SCOAMF from here on in. Isn't it a tad spooky that he's emitting and attracting flies in January? Some D&D monsters and demigods research should clear up if SCOAMF is Baal, or just some Big Eared Assfuck. mockery...

12 Of course they can and will use tax the rich. His followers don't care that  He also bribes the rich and uses the rich to further himself. All they care about is winning.

They know the score better than we do.
they don't actually have to really believe in the stuff, and if they did  it surely will be swallowed by the mind goblins.

Actually i have no freaken idea. I mean who does. We really have no idea how much influence the Muslim Brotherhood has with the Military and the Military is the key. If they Muzzies have promised the Military the Keys to the Kingdom, then they will probably prevail. And If I were the Military in Egypt I wold not be so fast to cross the Muslim Brotherhood. They are still the majority in Egypt and they are ruthless.

Of course, my expectation of privacy under 4th amendment is not tech related (for now) and instead based on, um, basic observational tools from back then. Which is awesome.

This is in preparation for her running for the White House in 2016. I am convinced they are going to try this. It's the easiest way to give Obama a 3rd term. *** She won't run. She doesn't even like D.C. from what I can tell. Besides, she'll be in very high demand at society functions and speaking engagements for the rest of her life. Increasingly, the party discarded ideology and became a functional means to power for Hitler and his clique.

213 reading things is fun: from the museum of communism website: Hitler's economic policies extensively increased the regulation of foreign trade and agriculture, imposed widespread price controls, initiated large public works programs, and copied the Soviets' predilection for N-year Plans. As David Schoenbaum pointedly remarks in his Hitler's Social Revolution, "A generation of Marxist and neo-Marxist mythology notwithstanding, probably never in peacetime has an ostensibly capitalist economy been directed as non- and even anti-capitalistically as the Germany economy between 1933 and 1939." Summing up the situation of business under the Nazis, Schoenbaum observes: "Wages, prices, working conditions, allocation of materials: none of these were left to managerial decision, let alone to the market... Investment was controlled, occupational freedom was dead, prices were fixed, every major sector of the economy was, at worst, a victim, at best, an accomplice of the regime. As a general rule, business, particularly big business, declined or flourished in direct proportion to its willingness to collaborate."

219 "i disagree that ideology was "discarded" though. it's just that socialism was never central to it." I find it fascinating how the Nazi party represented so many things to so many people in different parts of the country. I've increasingly come to believe that while Hitler and his inner circle never discarded ideology, they made a pragmatic decision to say or do whatever needed to gain power. I'm paraphrasing, but I believe it was Goebbels who said all they had to do was win one election and they would never, never, give up power until their dead bodies were carried out of the Reichstag. One of the things that makes the Third Reich so interesting is that the Nazi revolution was unique, in that the decision was made after the Beer Hall Putsch that it would be achieved by constitutional means.

Hey tiger the Nazis were socialists in a multitude of ways.....

Hitler acknowledged that the Nazi party was ``socialist'' and that its enemies were the ``bourgeoisie'' and the ``plutocrats'' (the rich). Like Lenin & Stalin, Hitler spiked trade unions, and put his own state-run labor organizations in place. Like the Soviets, Hitler hunted down and exterminated rival leftist factions (such as the Communists). Like Soviets, Hitler waged unrelenting war against small business.

The nazis regarded capitalism as an evil scheme of the Jews and said so often. Karl Marx believed likewise. In his essay, ``On the Jewish Question,'' Marx theorized that eliminating Judaism would strike a crippling blow to capitalist exploitation. Hitler put Marx's theory to work in the death camps.

Hey what the hell does Sven know?

You are just a hater!

"yeah"

Is Fascism a socialist offshoot more than a bastardization of free market economics?

Franklin D. Roosevelt (about Il Duce the original)
I am much interested and deeply impressed by what he has accomplished and by his evidenced honest purpose of restoring Italy and seeking to prevent general European trouble.

Adolf Hitler,
We are socialists, we are enemies of todayÂ’s capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are determined to destroy this system under all conditions.

Adolf Hitler,
Why nationalize industry when you can nationalize the people?

Joseph Paul Goebbels,
As socialists, we are opponents of the Jews, because we see, in the Hebrews, the incarnation of capitalism, of the misuse of the nationÂ’s goods

National Socialist Party of Germany (NAZI),
We ask that government undertake the obligation above all of providing citizens with adequate opportunity for employment and earning a living. The activities of the individual must not be allowed to clash with the interests of the community, but must take place within the confines and be for the good of all. Therefore, we demand: … an end to the power of financial interest. We demand profit sharing in big business. We demand a broad extension of care for the aged. We demand … the greatest possible consideration of small business in the purchases of the national, state, and municipal governments. In order to make possible to every capable and industrious [citizen] the attainment of higher education and thus the achievement of a post of leadership, the government must provide an all-around enlargement of our system of public education…. We demand the education at government expense of gifted children of poor parents…. The government must undertake the improvement of public health — by protecting mother and child, by prohibiting child labor — by the greatest possible support for all groups concerned with the physical education of youth. [W]e combat the … materialistic spirit within and without us, and are convinced that a permanent recovery of our people can only proceed from within on the foundation of The Common Good Before the Individual Good.

See also all the flower children in America right now getting SWAT teams rammed down their ass for selling raw milk. So, yeah, neither the USSR or Germany were leftists. They were totalitarians. More from the MoC: "There is strong evidence that Hitler planned a much more radical economic program after victory in World War II: forcible deportation of eastern Europe's peoples, re-colonization of the depopulated territory by Germans, establishment of a Stalin-style slave labor empire for public works, imposition of slavery for inferior races, and so on. Stanley Payne explains that Hitler's goals and situation required him to "invert the Leninist-Stalinist priority of internal revolution." That is, while Lenin and Stalin planned to first impose socialism on the Soviet Union, then turn to foreign conquest, Hitler planned to make his conquests first, then impose the more radical Nazi economic and political policies. "

230 Hey Jordan you know what Adam Smith had to say about some of your ideas?

Adam Smith,
The statesman who should attempt to direct private people in what manner they ought to employ their capitals, would Â… assume an authority which could safely be trusted, not only to no single person, but to no council or senate whatever, and which would nowhere be so dangerous as in the hands of a man who had folly and presumption enough to fancy himself fit to exercise it.

232 Anyway the Boy Scouts are interesting in that they followed the same pattern as the Jüdischer Wanderbund Blau-Weiss, and the Hitlerjugend. All these groups assume that boys on the brink of adolescence require directed activities, role models, physical exertion, and a break from the chaos of real life. And on this much they are right.

The Boy Scouts were really meant for Anglos at first, like the Wanderbund was meant for Jews and the Jugend for assholes. Baden-Powell assumed that non-Anglos wouldn't be interested. That's why there's this talk about "God" but not exactly what "God" means - even Catholics were invited. (*gasp*!)

Whether they still revere one God or not doesn't matter; they're not the government, they can revere Vishnu for all I care.

The Boy Scouts are not fascist and again, I'm sorry for misunderstanding the original comment; they're an inoculation against fascism.

But I also believe Jerry Springer and Maury are more of a reflection of 'real America' than Dr. Phil and Oprah. I think the country has fallen that far.

261 anti-homophobia is a great moral balm for the left. There's hardly any of them around but a vocal minority. You can be all self-righteous about your support of them because you watch Will and Grace. And since anti-sodomy and anti-gay bigotry are a basic part of western society (I know, but we aren't in Rome, Greece, or Afghanistan) since forever, you can use it to blast down the pillars of the society you hate so much. "Oh, yeah, I really liked George Washington, except he was a rampant homophobe. You can say what you will about Stalin, but at least he was open minded to gays."

Not JDP, maybe, I don't know. But I mean they were totalitarians, they were a new breed of socialists. The problem with socialism at the turn of the last century was that the petit borgouis didn't want to do it, so facsism was the latest variant to pop up in an attempt to be cool. patriotism is not right wing or left wing. you know? USSR and US and Iraq and Sweden all have parades and shit. Of course, there are certain lefties in the west who despise dominant western militaries, and they go peacenik. Just as there are conservative religious groups that are peacenik. So again, if your mind is broken and you think that republicans=patriot=right wing therefore nazi=patriot=right wing, what can I say?

The fact that Hitler used nationalism as a tool does not diminish his socialist cred.

So "right wing" is now merely an identifier for "patriotic"?

Oh no wait...that can't be it Baracka Doc was extolling his special brand of "economic patriotism" which hey you know who else invoked that a bunch?

Okay okay "militaristic"?

So those parades in Red Square and Beijing were "right wing affairs"?

Ah ok....

No Adolf Hitler attacked the ideas of Lockeian individual liberty such as it had existed in Germany, he attacked the free market, and self-interest.

He sought to "transform Germany into its lost promise from its 'misguided modern founding' that 'betrayed its best ideals' and needed "renewal."

Yeah yeah definitely sounds like someone trying to maintain the status quo, or better still The Weimar Republic the German Constitution of the time....?

Favorite reply is when I have it casually explained to me that, "well no Stalin was a right winger too."

I'm not bothering to check, but I'm pretty sure 'totalitarian' was coined by Hannah Arendt in the 60s. Like Shirer did later, Arendt was trying to understand the origins and appeal of Nazism and that's the word she chose to describe it.

John F. McManus,
Left has come to represent increasing government control. The extreme leftist typically seeks total government. Working their way toward total government power are the Communists, socialists, fascists, and modern liberals who advocate government solutions for every real or imagined problem.

*That* is fucking left versus right or as a 1926 Civics text described it.

Liberal vs Conservative

The Conservative values individual effort protected by strict rule of law and accepts that the individual is responsible for his lot in life.

The liberal feels that the community has a duty to ensure that the weak are not hurt by the inability of some to maximize their ability to make their own way and seeks to use government to protect the weak, feels law is best when loosely applied and used to correct individual cases of harm.

That's from memory and wobbly but stuck with me from a book I read in canada.

What struck me is that it was a lot easier to define "right" than left.

335 342 JDP,

Ah okay got it....

so murdering billions because they actually want gain is somehow less reprehensible than murdering millions because they are Jews or Indians or.....

hey wait a sec...you know Stalin...he sorta had a thing for Jews himself......

In a December 1, 1952 Politburo session, Stalin announced: "Every Jewish nationalist is the agent of the American intelligence service. Jewish nationalists think that their nation was saved by the USA. . . They think they are indebted to the Americans. Among doctors, there are many Jewish nationalists."

Now it is true most records say that Stalin only murdered about 29,000 Jews in the first great purge so I guess he was a left wing hero after all *maybe*?

"Night of the Murdered Poets" was august 12th 1952 in Lubyanka Prison Stalin had Beria's boys retire 25 Yiddish individuals who were members of the Jewish Anti-Fascist League.

Stalin had some serious thoughts on forced integration and obliteration of the Yiddish identity.

so is "ethnic cleansing" a left or right wing virtue?

What about extra-judicial murder?

336 "What about extra-judicial murder?" Well, judicial murder, in this country at least, is strongly associated with the right.

and yes I did make the decision stupid because that is the fucking flaw by concentrating "power' in "fewer hands" to "do more good" you magnify the capability for a catastrophic fuck up but by God JUSTICE demands YOU let ME fuck this up!

Me, I'd trust people to try to get their own poo out.

I'm an evil right winger who doesn't really give fifteen fucks about the defecatory  rituals of 300,000,000 people all at once....

I figure if I eat enough roughage and keep rodents out of my asshole nature will fucking take care of itself.

Anyway sorry to be crude.

338 356 Jordan,

Yes sir....

Hey Jordan.....

the "death penalty" is a valid punishment for catastrophic misdeeds....why by Golly I count on men to act with honor and be ruthlessly punished for misdeeds after rule of law.

Giggles uses "joystick summary judgement"

340 "That Obama is "left" to me denotes that he like most Keynesians LOVES him some Government...." Off topic, but I've recently concluded the major problem with Keynes is that his prescription is politically impossible to implement. Everyone loves increasing spending and lowering taxes in a recession, but now that the recession is over and Keynes's prescription calls for spending cuts and increasing taxes we lack the political willpower to follow through. We did the easy part, but we're unwilling to do the harder, but essential, second part.

341 I'm an atheist, and I admit I have to police my own thoughts for bigotry, especially regarding Islam. Posted by: Jordan at January 29, 2013 08:21 PM (Hz1zc) No such thing as an athiest. Self-worship, yes.

342 "the "death penalty" is a valid punishment for catastrophic misdeeds...." Death is a proper punishment for catastrophic misdeeds. The death penalty, however, is a government power that is unevenly applied, serves little purpose in free societies, and is apt to be abused by tyrants. I'm not particularly dogmatic about the issue, but I'm pleased some states are discarding it and those that retain are using it less frequently.

343 "No such thing as an athiest. Self-worship, yes." If you can't spell it, don't knock it.

345 326 Jordan,

and THERE is that charming circular logic that the 1926 book showed endemic to the left...

YES WE CANNOT TRUST GOVT TO BE FAIR BUT I CAN TRUST IT WITH EVER INCREASING POWER OVER MY LIFE!

Yeah..."libertarian" scooter by the way Barry using hellfires is no court at all.

349 360 Jordan,

Keynesianism is a religion.

Nothing more nothing less it is the only 'science' that demands that when results do not meet hypothesis the ONLY answer is to increase the active component of the formula.

I did a post on the difference between Keynes and Hayek on swimming pools one night here...wish I had kept it.

Posted by: sven10077 at January 29, 2013 05:13 PM (LRFds)

350 The difference between Keynes and Hayek is that nobody, and I mean nobody, can understand Keynes's book.

Posted by: Jordan at January 29, 2013 05:14 PM (Hz1zc)

351 the goal is to fill the pool.....

a command economist fills
the pool with concrete....mission done the pool is now a sidewalk but
who cares *I* like the answer comrade....

Kids look at pool in swimwear disguised as sidewalk and go star at a tree.

Hayek
looks at pool, makes an estimate of cost of filling pool versus flow
rate of hose solution, risks own time and money....buys a good water
hose buys water fills pool with water, sets price point for entry into
pool attempts to exert profit motive to the interaction between
capitalization investment to desired rate of return....sends kids to
advertise gives wage to kids, hires kid to sell tickets, hores
lifeguard....

Pool is in operation in 3 days.....profit begins year two.

Keynes.....heh....Keynes.....

Keynes
waits until the pool business above is in trouble, breaks out money
machine first attempts to create an entire water evaporation recovery
farm in area......the new physical plant succeeds but rate of water
recovery takes 30 times too long for optimal utility.....

Keynes
then breaks out money machine and pays kids from across the county to
come in and attempt to dig canal from ocean 300 miles inland to pool
area as a "industrial development zone. Canal works but water is salt
water clogs filtration system Keynes runs over budget hiring pump repair
guy. Loses six months but gains a wonderful multiplier for the unbuilt machine shop the next door neighbor dreams of one day building.

Keynes then hires fire department at triple pay to fill the pool at triple the cost Hayek filled pool in 5 minutes.

The Kids are now back in school.....

I
guess the point is that Keynes' folly is he has a better grasp of the
micro economic utility of a populations' needs than the analytical
ability of the indiidual actors....

this also leads to another "magnifier".....

the impact of bad judgement to impact multiplier....

353 I know leftists love to flatter themselves, and think they are the good guys, but all they have done is exchange one hatred for another. Racists justify their hate the same way leftist do. I'm sure the nazis thought what they were doing to the jews and the rest of the world was justified too. The one glaring lesson to be learned from the Nazis is that an all encompassing giant government aint the fucking answer. Slavery comes in many forms. I do not wish to be a slave to any system even if that system means well. That is the basis of my dissent. And it is on that hill I will live or die.

354 My thoughts on optimism: http://www.libertydude.com/?p=390

An excerpt: As a “gun nut” you can bet I’ll be watching this closely, but at the moment, it appears to me that additional gun control is a non-starter, and looking more deeply into it, I sense a burgeoning curiosity among those in “the middle” who are hearing the arguments of the pro-gun resistance and recognizing that it’s not full of lunacy, it’s full of reason, passion, and most of all a desire to do something that will actually make a difference.

355 374 JDP,

ehhhh

okay so Marxism in deciding that economics trumps all measured in the "ethics of class struggle" is the ultimate expression of left....

I see....

I don't agree but I see.

Whatever works for you I guess.

I know I am a deeply flawed human being who needs removed from any wealth and power.

Obama told me, imagine a world of need without white man's greed.

358 Keynesian?  When the MSM ends its war on reporting, maybe they'll ask what is obamanomics or what is the obama doctrine.  There is no justification for the obama economic policy.  That's the thing about the dark lord of vermin and empty platitudes, he's basically an ad hoc check the box corrupt cipher who, like the jason pollack character in Casino, thinks he's in the room because he's so smart.
